I was so frustrated with the horrible lessons I've had that I started teaching dance in Madrid Spain. There is a demand here. I quickly filled up my classes. I have my students watch your videos. thejimpaul.com/dance/ There is a link to my syllabus at the bottom of the page. I have no real desire to teach dance. I'm just so so myself... Just to get more people dancing.
We love that you're out there helping others get started! And, thank you for using our videos to help them. Our goal is to possibly do a European tour next year. It'd be great to do some dancing while we're there :-)
This is helpful by simplifying the 5 parts. The fact that the five parts can be mixed in different ways is really interesting. I have wanted to learn to dance formally for over 20 years and finally made up my mind to pursue it. This helps. I also really appreciate the fact that the finished look of the dance has a lovely elegance. Dance is an amazing tradition that really inspires me. It seem for centuries, all generations had some way of organizing movement to music. What a great way to spend time and play together with a partner.
I live in Virginia and am learning East Coast Swing...I was told it is easier than West Coast...I keep getting overwhelmed by specifics. What you demonstrated seems simpler and more straight forward. It also looks to me as if it can be applied in East Coast Swing. Thanks for the demo!
As a dancer of other styles, I can note that in this video it is immediately clear that the follower has a frame, the hand does not hang, the dynamics are in order - a very positive difference from many other videos. An a big plus - here you can see human plastic and not as usual something from hustle from which the my eyes are bleeding(sorry if you like hustle dance or discofox) - here I can only say - guys, this is really good stuff, respect for what you are doing!
Wow, light bulbs were going on in my brain all through this video! It was super clear and totally simplified the overwhelming variety of WCS moves that I've seen
Thank you so much for saying that! Our favorite comment of the day. In all honesty, we’re just having fun doing video... I don’t think we’d do it if it ever became too serious.
I teach WCS and I find your explanations very simple to understand, and very helpful for beginners. Some students really struggle with WCS. I'll suggest they watch your video !
I like this video on West Coast swing.I have being taking lessons at Arthur Murray dancing for a couple of years .But you show me in 14 minutes the easy way to learn. Thanks for the simple approach in dancing .
as an experienced lead in other styles, this concise breakdown was very helpful, and gave me the confidence to go out for a night and try some things. thank you.
Thank you, that was simple enough. I came across this dance just scrolling through you tube and loved it! I'm determined to learn if my 54 yr. old body will let me. I really wish I could have more "hands on" to learn and the competitions look fun. Thank you again, I guess I'll use my kitchen chair for my partner. I'm gonna have fun doing this!

I am a Lindy Hop dancer (been at it for over 2 decades). In March of 2020 found myself in Saigon, Vietnam where I decided to chill while the rest of the world was being ravaged by COVID. Social dancing in Saigon is fantastic (my main reason for staying here, not the COVID nonsense), especially the Latin scene. To my surprise Saigon did not have a WCS scene. So... I started one. It's very new - not really a scene yet - for now just trying to teach a group of dancers who hopefully will become the core of the scene. I've done some WCS back in Chicago (where I'm from) but I am hardly an expert on it, let alone on teaching it. Your videos are tremendously helpful - in both understanding the dance itself and understanding how to teach it to others. Thank you so much. Cheers.

I saw a lot of this living down in Memphis, TN. Gonna give it another go, now that I am retired and my Mrs. and I need to have some stand out moves, ha.

Super helpful. Yall made it look easy. Learn the 5 steps. Yes my instructor is just teaching the sugar push right now. I'm gonna surprise her with thesex5vmoves next time. Thank you
Right at 3:45 where you do the Left Side Pass with Man's Turn, you look so smooth with that Man's Turn. It's a 1 1/2 turn! It's a little hard for me to turn that much fast enough! Any hints. I start turning a little on Count 2 which maybe makes it a 1 1/4 turn. And maybe I finish a little late which I guess is OK too. It looks more like you do it with you feet turning more than a momentum thing. You totally finish your turn by Count 5. Otherwise we can do that whole series of turns after that.
You’re right. It’s a 1/4 turn on count 2 which makes it a little less of a turn. If you watch the turn in slow motion, you’ll notice that the turn finishes between counts 4 and 5. Tip: the closer your feet are together, the faster your turns will be.
@@countrydancex i am one of them. Not any more. I love your approach of teaching fundamentals and explaining that the rest is just add ons, not new steps. I have the same approach to salsa and hustle.
That's awesome! We've found that all of the social dances (Two Step, Salsa, WCS, ECS, etc) have underlying assumed structures. Those are the only things that give them the ability to become truly leadable rather than "pattern recognition" based dances.
@@countrydancex agree. We call them slot dances since the lady moves up and down the line and the man's job is to either change her direction or her timing. I find most guys misunderstand what leading means and are way too physical.
I agree that we make this harder than it is. We do several ballroom dances at intermediate social level. We need to improve on this one. Think we will go back to basics and get them better. Excellent video. We just don't have the look in styling that others do.
The right approach with the basics is everything. Not just for this dance, but all of them. Think about it this way ... everything you learn after the basics is simply an expansion of your understanding of the basics. Get the wrong idea there, everything else will be tough.
Love you videos and the manner in which you teach. I've been taking lindy hop lessons here in England for 9 months now, and watching your videos have really helped me with that style of dancing. Keep up the great work..!
You guys make this so simple and easy to follow. I have an instructor that is over complicating us and throwing too many moves at us. There are several different styles and versions.
I appreciate that the simple framework that you describe allows beginners, like me, to see through the haze of all the other instruction videos out there. I always come back to Country Dance X. I know that it's not considered "Country" (which I love!), but would you ever consider a Hustle video? I lived that era but didn't really know what I was doing.
We're so glad to have you here! Thank you for contributing :-) Hustle is a fun one. You'll see it sometimes done by country dancers. It seems that "country swing" has become popular (which is kind of just a water downed version of hustle)
I'm gonna learn from 3:40 to 4:05. That's a cool set of little combos. My wife has vertigo (and yes we still dance!). That way I'm doing most of the turning. She can turn some. A 1 1/2 turn can sometimes put her out for the night! If she's expecting it in a routine she can do a full turn. But this combo is perfect. We do normal 8 count whips ok most of the time (regarding vertigo).
Regarding her vertigo, inside turns are better for her. Outside ones are bad. She's had every test available. No fixing it. Sorry for too much info. We LOVE dancing.

Just found your videos and subscribed. I teach dance and your philosophy is the same as mine, “keep it simple and show the similarities of different styles of dance rather than the differences”. I went to a group WCS class many, many months ago, and even having competitively danced Jive, Swing, Salsa, Bachata and Zouk in my younger, fitter days, I still struggled with WCS footwork. This video just sent off lightbulbs and 'ah ha!' Moments all the way through. I think I'm ready to try again! My only hesitation is, in my other dances I know how to do a basic step with no moves, is there a similar stationary/basic/break or 'thinking about next combo' step for WCS?

@@countrydancex it’s Dallas Fort Worth swing out. What you call pass we call a transition. Only difference I see is we side step on 3&4 then back on 5&6. Great dancing.
You are a damn good teacher bro. I've been wanting to learn west coast swing for a while. Your are definitely the clearest and best at teaching it. Just don't know about that shirt. 🤣
Anthony and Rose...You guys do a tremendous job! I've been country dancing since 1997 and am a former competitor in the UCWDC. The video quality of your lessons is fantastic and you do a great job of explaining all of your movements. My wife and I really enjoy all of your videos. On another note, Anthony...you've got some really cool shirts. Where do you get them? :)
Thank you so much for saying that. We really do appreciate it :-) Anthony has also competed on and off in the UCWDC... we're considering giving it another go. Anthony only shops at one place (and is on a first name basis with the people who work there). He may not have a single piece of clothing that didn't come from Buckle.
@@countrydancex I can only assume it is Rose that has replied to me...lol. First off...would love to see Anthony, and you, Rose, on the UCWDC floors. To be honest with you, it was more the video you made that showed you guys at home with your family than it was anything else that really drew me close to you guys. My wife and I are now grandparents with four wonderful grandkids so seeing you guys as a family was very meaningful. I wish we were closer to you guys (we are in Florida) because we would absolutely love coming to your classes on a weekly basis. I told my wife today that I thought Anthony's shirts were from Buckle...(yes, I'm going to have to rub it into her that I was right!!) I'll be checking out the local Buckle store! Thank you for responding to me so quickly. It's nice to know that you guys are as real in "real life" as you are in your videos.
Thank you so much for such a sweet comment. For us, our relationship and family is first. We love dancing, but it’s something that we have within our marriage (not having a marriage within our dancing). If doing competition ends up being something that we feel like will enhance our relationship, we may do it... we’re just so busy between owning multiple companies and having small children at home that we literally have to schedule time to spend with each other hahaha. Thank you so much for joining us here! Your comments means a lot to us :-)
I am 90% there . i know the 5 basics here . Looking at the pros in action they overlay basics with body styling and musicality but the fundamentals are there for all to see . Many thanks i will press on .
Hi, I am watching this from NZ. Is it possible for the lady to wear her trousers higher or tighter at the ankle to enable me to see her footwork. Many thanks. I enjoy watching your videos.
Hi there from Texas. Honestly, we film in whatever we happen to be wearing that day. We operate 2 real dance studios. We love making these videos for you guys, but what we’re wearing is an afterthought since we make them in between other things whenever we have time
Hi, I’ve dipped in and out of WCS over the years but am back learning and have found this video very helpful. One question though, how do I know if my lead is leading me into a six count step across or an eight count?
I haven't looked though all of the comments, but do you have a specific video that helps with anticipating whether you're being led into a six-count or an eight-count?
I was looking for the full-on wrap whip where you turn as a unit (the girl leaning slightly forward half way thru with a one-arm "presentation" was real popular as an optical illusion) .....to show a male partner who just doesn't get it. I learned it in 1986 just from doing it with partners who knew how to lead it, but something gets lost in translation when I try to Show a Lead how to do it.
This video is fantastic. Most teachers are afraid to give away the "treasure". Anthony and Rose are introducing WCS for the masses.
Thank you so much for watching and your kind comment! We love our job :-)

Glad you enjoyed it! Try this video for a follow up: ua-cam.com/video/6zupkXzZp04/v-deo.html
This was so helpful! Thank you so much for simplfying.
We love to hear that! Thanks for joining us :-)

You’re so very welcome. Thank you for joining us!
Great video! Super helpful!
Thank you! We’re so glad you liked it.
Kick-ass! Thank you for this ☺️🥰🤗
You're so welcome!
you guys are great........ just started dancing west coast 3 weeks ago...
Thank you! Welcome to wcs. You’ll start thinking of life as “before and after” learning hahaha
This is very similar to DFW swing out 8 count or 6 count. I bet we could do them together and no one would ever know.
We’re not familiar with that, but all swing dances originated as Lindy hop and have many similarities
@@countrydancex it’s Dallas Fort Worth swing out. What you call pass we call a transition. Only difference I see is we side step on 3&4 then back on 5&6. Great dancing.

thank you so much for this video! 😃
Glad it was helpful!
Just watched and was hoping to see you end your instructions by incorporating all 5 moves to music. Would love to see that!
This was a great video!! Can't wait to give it a try. Me and my fiance only have left feet though.
Thank you for joining us here! Let us know if we can help :-)
You are a damn good teacher bro.
I've been wanting to learn west coast swing for a while.
Your are definitely the clearest and best at teaching it.
Just don't know about that shirt. 🤣
Oooh… you started out so well 🤣
That is easy way to understand
So glad you think so! Thank you for joining us :-)
superb and helpfull
Thank you❤
Anthony and Rose...You guys do a tremendous job!
Your comments means a lot to us :-)
This is great!!!
You were great in The Wire
Great. made it simple for me
I am 90% there . i know the 5 basics here . Looking at the pros in action they overlay basics with body styling and musicality but the fundamentals are there for all to see . Many thanks i will press on .
Yep. That’s the difference between What and How :-)
Like your style!
Thank you!
Will you do a video on the foot work like the "Pros" do?
We do plan on doing a footwork/syncopations video soon :-)
@@countrydancex looking forward to that.
We love making these videos for you guys, but what we’re wearing is an afterthought since we make them in between other things whenever we have time
I would like to see videos of him practicing alone and her practicing alone so I we can have ideas for drills at home.
That's a good idea! Thanks for the suggestion :-)
Yes! Im a newbie and i think that would be extremely helpful!
very well explained
This is amazing thank you
Hi, I’ve dipped in and out of WCS over the years but am back learning and have found this video very helpful. One question though, how do I know if my lead is leading me into a six count step across or an eight count?
It's like Salsa Casino ;) nice.
Maybe I can learn😲
For sure!
Great! Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Grate lesson
This is my 1st time watching a lesson for west coast swing. Can I learn it without a partner? 😅
I really enjoyed watching. Great instruction. Thanks!
Thank you for joining us:-) Let us know if there’s anything we can help with!
I haven't looked though all of the comments, but do you have a specific video that helps with anticipating whether you're being led into a six-count or an eight-count?
This should be exactly what you need:

thank you
I was looking for the full-on wrap whip where you turn as a unit (the girl leaning slightly forward half way thru with a one-arm "presentation" was real popular as an optical illusion) .....to show a male partner who just doesn't get it. I learned it in 1986 just from doing it with partners who knew how to lead it, but something gets lost in translation when I try to Show a Lead how to do it.
Hmmm... it’s hard to visualize from just words. We’d love to help, but would need a little more to go on.
Is the follow's tempo supposed to start quick and then slow down, as she's doing here?
