Very touching story. Coming from a family of educators, at every level. I can say she's one of the good ones. That's what a dedicated, devoted, and inspirational teacher looks like. Not just in it for the paycheck. Well, to both Mrs. Porter, and JT.
Teachers are tremendously underrated and under appreciated! They are the biggest influence on young people’s lives outside of their home. They make us better human beings!
I'm crying. I love these stories of teachers that stick to the hearts of their students. It's what I wanted to be when I worked with preschoolers, it's what my mom wants to be. Someone that inspires the next generation to be the best they can be and pursue their own passions. I work a desk job now. But in my heart of hearts, I still want to be a teacher someday. Maybe one day I'll come back to it.
"I refused to be a victim", a simple thought that could change a person's life forever. What an inspirational story! I have always been a victim of circumstances. I'm going to tell myself and change how my life will be from now on. How touching this story is! A simple philosophy of life, but a lot of depth.
This story is incredible and I tell you what, if this ever gets made into a movie, which it totally deserves to, I will watch with a box of tissues knowing that this tragedy had a happy ending. Kudos to you, Mrs. Porter and all the Mrs. Porter's out there. Love won.

My dad passed away last year at the age of 87. He was a music teacher. So many of his former students attended his memorial. They all said he touched their lives. Many went on to be teachers themselves. I’m so proud of his legacy. I’m watching this video at 5 am and I have tears rolling down my face. God bless Mrs Potter and the gentleman who “didn’t play the victim”!

Many people don’t realize that teachers become our second parents once we set foot out of our homes at that early morning of the day, they are the second example after our parents at home they teach us that the value of learning and respect is just as important as the value of life, God bless all teachers for all they do😘

Watching this video was the best 5 minutes of my week. The courage it must take to tell one's personal story of resilience is moving. This story, among so many others like JT, and Steve Pemberton, and Michael Oher, and so many thousands of others, is why every single solitary school in America needs loving, caring, compassionate teachers......and a full time school counselor.
Thats why i want to become a teacher. Thats why i work right now in school daycare with kids, trying to influent them, trying to be someone for them and trying to get em on the ,,right,, path. God bless Women like her!
Teachers play a very pivotal role in a person's life. They have access to children at impressionable ages and they can either inspire them to be good and make the best of their abilities or they can, simply by their indifference; discourage students, make them lose their self-confidence and prevent them for achieving things in life.
My son had a very bad experience with some teachers from 14 years old till 16. There were his most difficult and confusing years and he felt useless. That pushed him to make a U turn in his life. Now he's a confident young happy man that knows what he wants in life, he refused to be a victim 😇
Very touching story brave man. Bravo! Yes, teachers can make a difference in the lives of others. I'm a teacher assistant, not so young but I'm trying to get my teacher certification. Blessings to you, and Mrs. Porter
My greatest teacher was my High School principal who somehow always found time to talk to me in the hallways. In a little small Air Force Town in Rantoul Ill home of Chanute AFB. Thank you Mr Carlos Traficano ..... I am the man I am today because of you.
Teachers are so important. There are two who made a huge impact in my life. One that taught me. And the other one is my husband who BECAME a teacher at the age of 48. He became ill with GBS and could no longer do the construction work he was trained to do. Went back to school as an adult and was HIRED to be an instructor at the very school he went back to study at. Always believe in yourself. Never give up!
if you have a Teacher like Mrs. Porter with the heart and the passion and determination to help a child succeed then the skys the limit and to the guy in the video he is a perfect role model to the next generation showing what you can do if you have the drive and determination to reach for your dreams and to never give up

salute to teachers, especially the ones that go into the profession knowing the odds that are against them (low money, government, uncaring parents etc) but they stay committed to the children.
This is amazing. Teachers are indeed a special breed. I have a similar story to share. One of my high school teacher who taught us biology was and is the only reason I became a doctor. I was always slacking in class and she would always scold me for it and then sit with me after class to make me understand the concepts. She was relentless in helping students as much as she could and as years passed, would always try to check up on her students. She passed away recently due to cancer and over 400 of her students attended her funeral. Grown men and women, every one of us from different walks of life crying our hearts out since we were all touched by her in so e way or another. We met her sons and told them what she did for us, what she meant to us. RIP Mrs Norman, thank you for everything you did for us and sorry for disrupting your classes every time with a joke.
Just shows how fine the values of this man is 🙌🏻🙌🏻 he actually remembers ppl that influenced and motivated him years back and the best thing is he is thankful to them . Great humble guy .

Less than I year ago I did. In my highscool in the Late 90’s We had a substitute teacher who taught psychology, philosophy and religion. She got her Phd in theology and religions studies while teaching us. She was amazing, brilliant and perfect teacher. The previos teacher was horrible, she called us names, screamed and yelled and she gave me F on one of my tests just because I didn’t have proper paper. I forgot. The devilteacher was with us just a few months. Then came the angel. We all had lost our intress in these subjects and she kind of had to start all over. And boy she did. Her teachingmethods was so down to earth. She taught us by showing how the mind works, using us as example. Not just a theorylevel not by the book, but showing. All the quys were so in to everything she said because she made it so easy to understand. We had so many wonderful discussions about theology ( not just godly stuff but morals, right or wrong etc). I found her on Facebook and wrote a long message saying Thanks and teaching us the way she did. She understood the minds of 17-19y old, how We work and how We learn. Now she is a professor in a uni. Lucky students. ❤️ she got the message and was greatful and honored. Now We are friends on Facebook.

Damn, we are so lucky to have that one teacher that really made a difference in our lives, they stay in your hearts forever.
She was a beautiful Teacher .
a great story . And He is one fine man. Bless you both
Refused to a Victim!!!! Powerful Words
When a teacher reaches across and tells you they believe in you, you never forgot.
Just the fact that 35 years later, at the drop of a hat, she showed up for him as she did when he was a child is enough to bring tears to my eyes
Am from Asia tearing up here I wish I can read the books so I will be reach my goal not always be a victim 😭😭
@@JeVon_McCormick 🤩😍🤩😍😍😍
@@JeVon_McCormick you sir, are a great human being. Thank you and good bless you.
NEVER BE A VICTIM AND YOU WILL SUCEED..
*_What a teacher writes on the Blackboard of life, can never be erased!!!_*
Love won.
*@Kendall Rhodes* from the teacher's view of things being the lead. Teachers so often get overlooked or cast as small roles in the overcomers journey, although I have to say JT's is so touching and inspirational. Who at thirteen years old has the sense, strength and determination to pull through from the life they were dealt?
I can totally relate. I’m 17 (from Dayton), I’ve been in foster care since I was a baby and I’ve been going through the same things my entire life. There’s so much I want to do in life, and I know I can be....I just need that one person to believe in me and be there for me.
Be strong. .don't give up. You can do this
@@JeVon_McCormick I guess I never thought about it like that. It seems often times I’m the one holding my own self back. Thank you for your words of encouragement- Ky’Tiana
I hope the very best comes in your way. and that, you become successful one day! Be strong and stay safe!
Be encouraged, young lady. There are many others who have backgrounds similar to yours or worse who have accomplished many worthwhile pursuits. Always remember it's no how you start but how you finish that's important.
Ky'Tiana, YOU got everything You need...YOU👑💯
Wow! How tremendously grateful I am to have found this channel! Your story stirs up memories of my mother, who was an educator for 33 years. I remember her bringing students home on the weekend to spend with us. At the time I didn’t realize that they needed to be in a different environment than what they went home to every day after school. When I think of my mother and the lives she touched I can’t help but be extremely grateful to God to have witnessed the love she had for each of them 🙏🏽. Thank you for sharing!
Mrs. Porter is a hero! Thank you to every teacher for their hard work and dedication to supporting children.
i had a teacher that i thought hated me only to find out that she pushed me hard because she saw something that i did not at the time. thanks, mrs. copus.
I’m a teacher and I can safely say I have been fortunate enough to reach people myself and they have thanked me too. I’m proud to be a teacher and I know what I do is very important.
Many people don’t realize that teachers become our second parents once we set foot out of our homes at that early morning of the day, they are the second example after our parents at home they teach us that the value of learning and respect is just as important as the value of life, God bless all teachers for all they do😘
Yepp that's right 👍
You’re absolutely right. Being a teacher is a huge responsibility.
I wish every teacher was worthy of that blessing.
All children should be lucky enough to have a Shirly Porter for a teacher.
The one thing that stays with every child throughout Thier whole life , , is , , an exceptional teacher . . . To all people in the world that tutor children and adults in later life . . Don't just be a good teacher . . Be a specially exceptional one . . You have the future in your capable hands . Teach the future children well . .
Very well said
"I loved her, she threw a shoe at me" :D
From poverty to prosperity. If it wasn't for the caring teacher who knows where he would if ended up. Teachers do matter.
My goodness, teachers truly make a difference. My 6, 7 and 8th grade teacher, Mr. Russell Gamina, made such an impact on my life. If you’re reading this “Thank you.”
The sum of some of my teachers and some of my friends parents is that, to have been seen by adults when you were a child, were for me the difference between becoming a good adult and not becoming an adult at all. Having said that, Mrs Porter would have been welcome to throw shoes at me as well!
Oh my goodness! This brings me to tears! My 5th grade teacher is still alive and I keep in touch with her she moved to another state and we talk often and. Its been almost 50 years since I was in her class! And she made such an impact on my life and she has the perfect last name..."LOVE"!!!💜
Such an inspirational story, thank you for sharing.
Miss Liberty 2nd grade...To this day I still remember you...41 years ago...Thank You
Wow....a few hours ago, I started crying for my dark past and hopeless life. Then I opened my browser and this vid came up....seriously speaking.....I really needed this. Thank you JT sir. When you said, "I refuse to be a victim", I was speechless....
This Pandemic has truly taught me to appreciate teachers a whole lot more. Definitely overworked and underpaid
Somehow teachers always remember their students
Tears keeps flowing down.......definitely an inspiration to a better person
Teachers are so important. There are two who made a huge impact in my life. One that taught me. And the other one is my husband who BECAME a teacher at the age of 48. He became ill with GBS and could no longer do the construction work he was trained to do. Went back to school as an adult and was HIRED to be an instructor at the very school he went back to study at. Always believe in yourself. Never give up!
So inspiring, your the perfect example of “never giving up”
if you have a Teacher like Mrs. Porter with the heart and the passion and determination to help a child succeed
then the skys the limit and to the guy in the video he is a perfect role model to the next generation showing what you can
do if you have the drive and determination to reach for your dreams and to never give up
As a teacher who recently retired due to Covid, I needed to hear this. I miss the interaction with students and had not planned on retiring for another five years. Thanks so much for your inspiration and uploading this! You just made my day 💟
salute to teachers, especially the ones that go into the profession knowing the odds that are against them (low money, government, uncaring parents etc) but they stay committed to the children.
Mrs. Porter's eyes and smile are truly those of an angel. She is not a human. God bless her
This is amazing.
Yes so many people need to hear this STOP being the victim
Yes, and so many people need to stop blaming victims for being victims. To change sytems that victimize people for profit, for power for hate.
People like him are rare. Stop acting like everyone can simply turn their situation around like this. Where's your success story?
@@melissa90ify heres my success story my father also mentally, verbally, and physically abused me as a kid, I experienced racism and poverty as well. left home at 16 going to youth challenge, graduated with my GED at 16, joined the navy at 17, saved peopled lives while being shot at in Afghanistan before i was 21 pronounced my best friend dead as i could not save his life bc he was shot 3 times and no exit wound, I left the navy completely destroyed by PTSD, guess what I did, i got help and went to college and graduated with a degree in computer science. now Im doing the best I can as a programmer for a large marketing company. Id say thats not bad lol. im no CEO yet but i will be there one day!!! hopefully both of you commenters can see i to had the CHOICE to be a victim i'm choosing otherwise.
Surely, teachers make a difference. God bless this gentleman and his teacher.
Ok.. this made me cry. This was so moving. I'm so sorry for all the pain that you went through when you were younger. No child should EVER have to go through that. I'm so happy that you made it and that you were able to thank the teacher that made such a difference in your life. Many hugs and much love from New York!❤️❤️❤️
Baby A
Teachers always make a difference ❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Wish I could like all these beautiful comments 1000 times each and the story too 😭🙏🤗💕
All I can say is "wow, wow, nice!"
Thank you.
This brought me to tears! I can't imagine what you've suffered, you have a Lions Heart. As a child you literally had to pull yourself up. Despite of your horrific circumstances, you refused to be a victim. You gave me some well needed inspiration Today. I am grateful. Thank you for sharing and remembering Mrs. Porter.
Overjoyed for your Happy Ending. Blessings from your new subscriber
This man has overcome obstacle after obstacle. THIS is pure man. Some of the things you can't by is heart, that human instinct and determination. This man has all three!
"I refused to be a victim." Amen.
Please teachers never get discouraged. Most of us know how you change the world on a daily basis. Thank you so much !! You have a very high calling !!
Some teacher are way underpaid for how they change people's lives.
Shirley Porter who gets practically no notice of the event and turns up looking fantastic! Well done JeVon! What a success story!
We need more Mrs Shirley Porters !!! Bravo !! She fulfilled her job 110 % !
Damn that was so beautiful
Who ever you are, it's come from the person called teacher.... thanks you to all teachers on the earth.....

This almost brought me to tears, and unfortunately that's not something that happens often.
Ow so loving
Teachers can change your life.
And i realized this when i am 33 year of age....
I can never forget my teachers...
We need more Mrs Porter's and JT, to help the children of today and tomorrow
Teachers, PLEASE ALWAYS REMEMBER, you touch so many
lives and you may just be the one who made such a difference and turned a child's life around.
DON'T EVER GIVE UP ON A CHILD.
EVERY CHILD HAS A STORY TO TELL SO NEVER BE TOO BUSY TO TAKE TIME TO LISTEN.
MRS. PORTER DID! GOD BLESS YOU!
GOD BLESS THE TEACHERS WHO SEE THE VALUE OF A
CHILD. AND MAKE SURE THEY KNOW.
