    So if it hadn't already been said, Dan Murrell is a LEGIT film journalist after this interview with Angel Studios as well as his generally even keeled reporting on Barbenheimer. He's great at really digging in to this stuff and values clarity and honesty over sensational headlines in his reporting. Well done, Dan.

    I just rewatched The Exorcist last week in preparation for Believer. He was such a talented filmmaker and, despite a long life lived, it's incredibly saddening to hear of his passing. If anyone wants to see a powder keg film that's criminally underappreciated, please watch his last movie from 2011, Killer Joe. It's possibly a masterpiece.

      I'm obviously not Dan, but based on the 3 movies you listed, the answer would be no. On that list, only Barbie is a toy movie; MBros and Sonic would qualify as Video Game movies for the most part.
      Aside from that, if another 2 or 3 toy movies come and do great, that still might not make it official that we're in that phase. They'll need to be consistently coming out and being critical and financial hits to declare that phase a go (I'd say 4 or 5 in a row, doing well). It would be a go, even if comic movies pick back up though.
      Maybe if G.I. Joe, Transformers, and Lego can pick back up; or others like Play-doh, Nerf, or Hot Wheels can join the fray, that golden age would start.

    • @thevikingbear2343
      @thevikingbear2343 Рік тому +8

      Lego tried to start the toy movie trend. Lego Batman was a hit so it looked like it, but then Lego Ninjago and Lego 2 were disappointments at the box office, which made studios try to do videogame adaptations as well. With how well the original season of the Witcher, Arcane, and the Last Of Us was received, on top of Sonic 1 & 2, Tomb Raider and Mario movie making great box office, I believe we are already years into the Video Game adaptation era. Also remember Gran Turismo is coming with good reviews. Barbie being the cultural phenomenon that it is, is just an anomaly. Dungeons and Dragons, another (arguably) toy movie did bad at the box office even though it had estellar reviews. Transformers is technically a toy movie but nobody cares and also flopped.

    • @thevikingbear2343
      @thevikingbear2343 Рік тому

      I had forgotten about Snake Eyes, another toy movie flop.

    • @bajansamurai
      @bajansamurai Рік тому

      @@thevikingbear2343 And I think the key thing has always been that it is often a piece of luck deciding if a new genre will be a thing. Comic book movies didn't take off because they figured out how to make them good, they made a number of good ones and that inspired them to continue to take them seriously enough to keep the quality high.
      If they follow up Transformers: RotB with Bumblee II or some other version that does well, maybe they'll bring that franchise back up to snuff. They need some groundbreaking director to resurrect G.I. Joe though.

    12:00 I think also having a variety of films to choose from is helping. There is something for basically everyone so groups that normally don't go to the movies are showing up along with the regular movie goers. Want a comedy? Barbie. Drama? Oppenheimer. Based on real events? Sound of Freedom. Action? MI: Dead Reckoning. Action/camp? Meg 2. Family movie? TMNT.

    I hope Hollywood will learn the right lesson this time. Make unique movies that appeal to different demographics and have them play at the same time. This will drive a lot of cross promotion. If you only have comic book movies in the theatres, a lot of people will soon learn going out to see a movie "is not for them".
