Yes!!!! This is the yearly video that made me fall in love with you charts & you Dan! Absolutely love it! Next year could you get Grae Drake & Hal Rudnick on for a Screen Junkie's Show reunion?
I wouldn’t be surprised if Ufotable continues this trend with making another Demon Slayer movie. The manga had around 100 chapters so I assume there’s likely to be another one given to see how much of a success Mugen Train is.
next season is going to cover the 2 arcs after mugen train, so given they stick to manga material, they could only adapt the last arc for a second movie if they want to..
Here’s mine: 1. Black Widow 2. Shang Chi 3. F9 4. Hotel Transylvania 4 (always bet on animated franchises in the summer) 5. The Suicide Squad 6. A Quiet Place II 7. Jungle Cruise 8. Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard 9. Cruella 10. Conjuring 3 With so much uncertainty I’m betting on the closest thing to a guarantee that exists at the box office right now (Marvel). I agree that Free Guy looks interesting but the first Bodyguard movie did well and has gained a following on cable since, so I think that’s the RR movie that wins out this summer. The Rock is usually pretty bankable so unless Jungle Cruise is awful (certainly possible) I think it cracks the top 10
Yay I love Dan’s summer movie previews. Here’s my predictions: 1. Black Widow 2. F9 3. Shang-Chi 4. The Suicide Squad 5. In the Heights 6. Space Jam 2 7. A Quiet Place 2 8. Jungle Cruise 9. Hotel Transylvania 4 10. Cruella
Excited for those 3 as well but sadly live in a country where cinemas are still closed... I'm hopeful they will be open for Shang-Chi but definitely not for the other two :-/
And with all respects to Dan, I live in the sticks with those relatively cheaper ticket prices, and after factoring in transport costs, it is still almost thirty bucks even for just the two of us. Not counting refreshments. Or I could stay at home, have a beer, pause the movie when one of us need the restroom, not spend an hour in the car, not deal with other people's kids running riot and uncontrolled, etc... That D+ thirty bucks looks a lot more attractive, if I'm honest. I am so done with movie theaters until they start taking crowd control a lot more seriously.
Omg you bought the shirt I told you about!!!! 🥰 or at least I tagged you, even if it’s just a possibility that you read my tweet it’s nice to think that you did.
Personally, I think _The Suicide Squad_ will be lower since it's rated R. The perceived pattern that R rated films make way less does appear to be changing, but I don't think it will be able to compete that well. Secondly, I think Black Widow will be a lower performer since a lot of what hype there may have been has died in the wait through the pandemic; also, it's opening early in the season. I bet that later releases will do better as things continue to open up. For my money, number 1 will be Shang Chi. Then The Suicide Squad and Black Widow will be number 2 and 3, (but I'm not 100% sold on that order for the two). Just my thoughts though. Keep up the great work, Dan!
Speaking of your experience with Demon Slayer, I think I speak for the anime community that follows your channel when I say I really hope yo get back to your "promise" to review all of the Studio Ghibli films. You were on a roll for a minute and if you're looking to get more knowledge/experience in the world of anime, you really couldn't ask for a better education than that.
Hey Dan! I'd like to recommend a few anime series you might try that are of fairly different genres, most of which don't involve battling/hand-to-hand combat: Sakamichi no Apollon (Kids on the Slope) - music, drama/romance, coming of age Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu - historical, storytelling Barakamon - comedy, "slice of life" Giant Killing - sports Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket - military, character drama
Yay, Twister! I lived in the US in 1996 and seeing it on the big screen there was so fun. It's my favourite guilty pleasure movie. I've probably seen it 20+ times; I always leave it on if it comes up randomly on the telly. "Cow! ... Another cow!" "Actually, I think that was the same one." Awesome.
I don't see The Suicide Squad that high unless it is a really good film (although I wonder if it will change to only in theaters). I also think In the Heights will do really well and I am going to try and see that in theaters even though I have HBOMax.
So excited that you did this. The Slashfilmcast summer movie wager is always a favorite for me and it has been hard not having that for the last two years. This will be satisfy that desire. I am surprised you are including Shang-Chi. I always consider summer season ending on Labor Day so money earned afterwards is not included. Is that your case here? If so, that's a lot of money for the opening weekend.
I'm excited for you to jump into anime more with Demon Slayer. I haven't seen it but always wanted to get into anime after watching Full Metal Alchemist. Candy Man at #10? Didn't think it was going to make the list. Free Guy I'm thinking will be higher Shang-Chi, the unexpected success of little-known MCU stuff Black Widow - I almost forgot about this, might just watch at home Busy week! I'm so excited for everything!
Love the list, been watching you since 2016! As a 90s kid and with all of your video knowledge I am upset that’ Space Jam did not make the list, you will eat your words!
I hope we can also see some classic movies in theaters to go along with the newer movies this summer. Last summer I saw Ghostbusters, Twister, The Karate kid, and The Neverending Story in theaters and it was so much fun.
You're missing one thing for Sang Chi: cultural significance in North America. This is the 1st time the AAPI get their own superhero in the lead. People will go see it. IDK if it'll be as big as Black Panther but it will have higher than average pando numbers. 1. Sang Chi 2. Black Widow 3. Suicide Squad
So excited for summer movies! Can't wait for Black Widow for the simple fact that Marvel has been pushed back their entire catalog for over a year for this movie. That leads me to believe something huge is going to go down in it. I could be wrong, but am hyped either way.
Speaking of movies in which videogame characters become self aware: You might like the Christoper Lambert movie 'Nirvana'. It was an Italian production from 1997 and looks like it could be set in the 'Blade Runner' universe, with ideas from 'The Matrix' sprinkled in. The original version was in Italian, with Christoper Lambert being the only one who's lines were dubbed. There is an English dubbed version, where he dubs himself and is, through that, the only actor to do his own lines. It's an odd but fun one.
I think "In the Heights" was a smart choice. People look to feel good and go with their families, so I think it'll have "legs" as you'd say. Also, I don't mind if your review isn't first because the quality and thoughtfulness will always be top notch.
Here's my prediction for just the top 4.... 4. F9 3. Space Jam 2 2. Shang-Chi 1. Black Widow I think most of the big movies this year will be in the last couple months of the year (Venom 2, Dune, Eternals, Ghostbusters Afterlife, Encanto, Spider-Man NWH).
If you want more anime to watch, here's some for a new anime fan. Attack on Titan (the most hyped up anime right now and the final season is coming in the winter and it's also a masterpiece), Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (tied with Attack on Titan for the highest rated anime), Jujutsu Kaisen (The movie is coming early next year and it's probably gonna break records), and Mob Psycho 100 (everything that's amazing about anime). Also if you want to know my favorite, it's One Piece (the highest selling comic series by a single author, highest selling manga of all time, about to beat Batman for the second highest selling comic series of all time, and it's so culturally impactful in Japan that it literally has tons of statues of the series all over Japan).
As always great show Dan! I look forward to it every week. I have missed these summer movie top ten prediction videos so I was very happy to see you bring it back. Looking forward to seeing how the summer plays out! Also is that the US vinyl from Waxworks Records? I couldn't help looking at it throughout the video lol.
People please like this so he will see it. been recommending this since dans lab on sj+. The absolute best anime series for a an american film fan to jump into is Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. Its also the only anime where the dub is actually considered on par or better than the sub. Please watch it dan, its 5 seasons but only 12 episodes each- not like One Piece or Naruto lol. It is a concise story with an ending in mind from the beginning like Breaking bad. Fun fact, its one of the few mega popular animes that was written by a woman, and for that reason I think it gives a really unique voice that bucks alot of shonen trends ( I know its not shonen). Fantastic characters, world, lore, and themes. Highly reccomend.
My Top 10 Summer Movies for this year. 1. F9 2. Black Widow 3. Cruella 4. Hotel Transylvania 4 5. In the Heights 6. The suicide Squad 7. Candyman 8. Free Guy 9. Peter Rabbit 2 10. Old
Hey Dan, I'm loving your top 10 summer 2021 predictions, I'm really looking forward to your 'All My Movies,' with Adam Collins, should be a real blast, cool Star Trek, Next Gen Enterprise, Defiant and Voyager T-shirt, where did you get it from?
I'm a bit late to this video but just thought I'd say I was ignorant of a lot of anime and after watching all the ~20 main films I started watching recommended anime shows. Lots were mediocre or had major issues. But I would HIGHLY recommend Death Note and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood and they're both extremely bingeable. For Dan and anyone else reading, tbh, unless you really hate any gore.
Dan, you should watch "Attack on Titan". It's the greatest anime series of all time. I'm not hyperbolising. Literally every episode is a cliffhanger, and it does something so rare, which is that every season is better than the one that came before it.
Yes, the Marvel movies will be in the top, but I think it is a horror summer. All of us horror fans love communal watching in the theaters and have been dying to get back at it. This summer gives us 4 huge movies we have been waiting for so long (Spiral, Candyman, Conjuring 3 and Quiet Place 2) and I think we will make them very successful.
Personally, I'm planning to see numbers 1-3 and maybe number 7 this summer (assuming they all actually reach cinemas here in the UK) which is probably a good sign for the accuracy of Dan's list
My mom asked me if my brother and I would like to see “The Truth About Cats and Dogs” when we were kids, and was surprised when I said “no”. She’d assumed it was essentially “The Secret Life of Pets”, decades before that movie existed.
Hey Dan, can I suggest that in the streaming charts you put the year movies were first released? There are a lot of similar titles and sometimes it's confusing (especially on Netflix) to figure out what's a new release or what's an old movie that got in recently on the service.
Gosh, as a Canadian watching this in lockdown it sucks we probably won’t be able to see a lot of these movies in theatres. I would love to see In The Heights in theatre, but that probably isn’t going to happen.
I'm really excited for Black Widow but the major cinema chain in Japan is not showing it…quite frustrating. Other chains haven't revealed if they will or not yet. I found some smaller cinemas doing Cruella so they will probably do Black widow too even though they didn't do Raya.
Looking forward to your Demon Slayer review! There’s a lot of great anime to check out, but I think the most relevant for upcoming anime theatrical releases that could be big in the US would be My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Dragon Ball Z/Super. Of those I think MHA would be especially up your alley as a fan of superheroes and the MCU!
Who else just wants Dan to watch Avatar the last airbender whenever he mentiones the Amine thing? I resisted until last year and it blew my mind. And knowing Dan and Mara, they would absolutely have a great time watching it
I cannot suggest highly enough that if you do any other anime series, find some way to watch Monster. It or Cowboy Bebop if you can't find a way to watch Monster. I'm not a massive anime fan (I like a few) but Monster isn't just one of my favorite anime shows, but maybe my single favorite psychological thriller in any medium.
Maybe not to that extreme and I still doubt it is going to be the highest grossing film of the summer but I could see Space Jam being a Transformers like situation where there's a big gap between how bad critic reviews are and how much the general public likes it.
My top 10 favorite summer films (not by box office) 10. Ratatouille (June 27, 2007) 9. Jurassic Park (June 11, 1993) 8. The Lion King (June 15, 1994) 7. The Wizard of Oz (August 25, 1939) 6. The Dark Knight (July 18, 2008) 5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (May 5, 2017) 4. Spaceballs (June 24, 1987) 3. Inside Out (June 19, 2015) 2. The Empire Strikes Back (May 21, 1980) 1. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (May 24, 1989) May: 3 June: 5 July: 1 August: 1
I love the original Space Jam. I was a kid in the 90's. I hated the trailer for Space Jam 2. Space Jam 2 = Wreck It Ralph + Ready Player One - Space Jam
If you are going to give Shadow in the Cloud a watch, can I just suggest going for it without watching the trailer. I really enjoyed it, but I think part of that was just because I saw it through TIFF before it was released or any trailer had been cut and I went into it completely blind and let myself be completely mystified by where the movie went.
Dan: I don't know if the kids are still into Paw Patrol. I...I don't want to know. Cracker Factory Executive: Frankly, we don't want to know. It's a market we could do without.

It will be interesting to see how Shang Chi & the Legend of the Ten Rings fares when it comes exclusively to theaters during the 45 day window.
Alan!
M Night always delivers so I'll see with Old
Cinemark will not be the only major theatre chain playing it. I am a manager at Marcus Theatres/Movie Tavern and we will be playing the film as well.
My mom asked me if my brother and I would like to see “The Truth About Cats and Dogs” when we were kids, and was surprised when I said “no”. She’d assumed it was essentially “The Secret Life of Pets”, decades before that movie existed.
The theater I work for is NOT a Cinemark and a few locations in our company are showing Army of the Dead too. Grand Rapids and Lansing, MI
Black Widow will definitely be at number 1. First MCU in two years
Hey Dan, can I suggest that in the streaming charts you put the year movies were first released? There are a lot of similar titles and sometimes it's confusing (especially on Netflix) to figure out what's a new release or what's an old movie that got in recently on the service.
Great to see you carrying on the tradition... feels normal 🤣
Gosh, as a Canadian watching this in lockdown it sucks we probably won’t be able to see a lot of these movies in theatres. I would love to see In The Heights in theatre, but that probably isn’t going to happen.
Very excited for Twister ( all my movies )
Shit im hyped for Dan’s review of demon slayer.
is that a cricket bat signed by Simon Pegg from Shaun of the Dead behind you? Would love to hear the story of how you got that!
Definitely expecting Jungle Cruise, I think people miss seeing The Rock.
Finally Movie-Theaters open back up over here (Austria, Europe) and I finally can start contributing to the Box Office again :-)
Big hype for summer.
I'm really excited for Black Widow but the major cinema chain in Japan is not showing it…quite frustrating. Other chains haven't revealed if they will or not yet. I found some smaller cinemas doing Cruella so they will probably do Black widow too even though they didn't do Raya.
Dan, you should check out The Mitchells vs The Machines. It's such a fun movie, would love to see your thoughts on it.
Shame British cinemas are giving Demon Slayer limited screenings (Like they always do to Anime Movies). The UK is severely going to miss out!
Prediction - no movie will make over $200 million domestically at the summer box office this year
If I had to guess on what will be the highest grossing film this summer, probably F9 and Black Widow...
Tuesday Night Lives. Then we can keep the TNL logo.
Your 365 chart should have the moment of release (week/month)
Watch out for the green knight
I think Cruella can beat Candyman and the Conjuring, and probably Hotel Transylvania, too. I also think Space Jam can challenge the last 3 spots, too.
