I’m concerned about the drop off because of Omicron. The NHL is implementing a 5 day pause starting Wednesday due to rising Covid positive tests, some of which are the Omicron variant.
Omnicron if anything might make people more willing to go out than any other strain, since it is truly looking like this variant is actually like the flu in terms of severity, while a lot more people are getting it, far fewer are getting severely Ill and even fewer dying. I'd much rather catch omnicron than delta. Which was previously the most likely variant you'd get in the US, the more people that get omni Ron, the fewer that will get delta and spread that.
Saw No Way Home four times this opening weekend alone. Once on opening Thursday night (crowd was WILD), again on Saturday in Dolby Cinema, and twice on Sunday back to back showings. @@travisbickle4360 He is at bigger risk of being pigeon-holed, yes. He probably can continue doing youthful roles as long as he still looks the part, but the nightmare of any serious actor is to be typecast. The kinds of roles he will choose to do post Spiderman will be instrumental in deciding whether he gets longevity in Hollywood, or must retire.
To me, that shows that today, without RDJ and Chriss Evans, the MCU needs Spider-man more than Spider-Man needs the MCU. Spidey is a character that can only be compare with Super Man and Batman in popularity and I think that he is the stronger of the 3. He can bring people to the MCU event movies. Yes, off course, sony benefits from being on the MCU too, from the mind of Kevin Feige that know this characters like no one else, but after endgame Marvel has to rebuild, it needs someone popular to handle the transition from the Tony Stark and Steve Rogers era to the Shang Chi, Sam Wilson and cia era. Spidey can be that bridge.
Its Spiderman that needs MCU not other way other. Solo Spiderman movies does the same box office as Marvel movies with C and D list Marvel characters You cant compare once in a life time crossover movie to average Marvel movie. Remember Amazing Spiderman 2 just made 460 million which forced Sony to run to Kevin Feige for a Reboot.
Not necessarily. The biggest reason NWH performed as well as it has was the promise of the multiverse, and bringing in beloved previous cinematic iterations of the character. The hype was insane. None of the other standalone Spiderman movies have done nearly as well as NWH has. Was almost as if all three Spideys banded together to give it their best final shot 🤪
@@travisbickle4360 I don't know if Marvel "needs" Spiderman. But there have been NINE Spidey movies. That's a load that no Marvel character has come close to carrying. Every seat was filled! You couldn’t get extra tickets all weekend. Out little town showed up. I know so many ppl who aren’t marvel fans, that rewatched all the Spider-Man movies just to go see this.
I think Spider-Man will get a Chinese release soon. China seems to be trying to kick the legs out from underneath Hollywood films that were counting on the Chinese market to be a big success. Spider-Man will be hugely successful with or without them, and you have to imagine that they will want to share in the success and the money that comes along with it.
Im gonna be honest, I dont trust the numbers that China reports on their movies (in foreign movies, we can trsut a little bit because so money goes to foreign studios). Every years they have a movie with a 900 mi domestic box office. When you think about cosuming a product GDP is more important than population. The US GDP é 40% bigger than China and the US has a huge cinema going culture, so, how can China can beat the US, how can they have a Star Wars FA every year? But since there is no free press in china, they can report whatever number they want and boost national pride by saying that they have the largest domestic box office. Btw, Im not from the US, Im Brazilian, so, is not about any national pride for me, is just that I dont think the numbers add up.
@@rsrocha1984 That's not it. They are forcing citizens to go watch it from schools and offices plus stopping competition by preventing big movie release especially Spiderman. Venom made like 300 million white Far from home made 200.

@@forwhy8723 As I said, when you talk about consuming a product, GDP counts not population. Brazil, for example, has a population 4 times bigger than englant, but since englant has a bigger GDP usually their BoxOffice total are bigger than Brazil. Matrix is even lucky to be getting some IMAX showings because of a contractual agreement. Most PLFs (including all Dolby Cinema locations) are still going to be playing NWH, as far as I can tell. I wouldn’t be shocked if Matrix is completely out of whatever IMAX screens its playing on after a week.

Testament to Stan's genius. People really love this character and that's probably why this movie, Spider-Man 2, and Spider-Verse were so praised. This movie is a really good Spider-Man movie. The writers actually understand what makes someone Spider-Man here. As well as ITSV and Spider-Man 2 Spider Man doesn't fight because he want to, it's because he has to. And believe me Peter Parker fucking doesn't want to.
@@travisbickle4360 Lee and Ditko were thanked in the same line of the credits. I think a lot of people know that he was an important part of Marvel's history. It's just that Lee was the face of Marvel for so long (and a big hype-man for the characters) so he's referenced more often.

Cinemas were shut down today in Montreal and the rest of the province because omicron is out of control. We reported our highest case counts ever in the past 5 days. My only chance now is to see it in Toronto later this week.
The chinese movie “lake changjin” shouldn’t even make it to the movie charts. It should be listed on a separated propaganda chart. In my home city, it is sort of obligatory for some businesses and schools to bring their employees/students to the cinemas for “patriotic education” purposes.
On top of that who knows how many of those ticket sales where even for that movie? We only have the word of those people that those are the numbers and I don't really trust them.
Saw it in Monterey Park, California last month. A big sloppy mess. Not worth your time unless you want to laugh at the comically villainous portrayals of the Americans and that's a small fraction of the 3-hour runtime.
I haven't seen a movie more than once in theatres since Black Panther (which I saw 3 times). But I'm fairly certain I'm going to a second showing of Spidey this week (this time in IMAX).
Wow Dan!!! This is my first time watching your break down on the box office. You really do your home work. Wow!!! Great break down. I look forward to seeing your box office break down next week. Geez, that’s was very informative ☺️👍
Our cinemas here were forced to go to 50% capacity for this weekend and from Monday have to be closed by 8 and a lot of countries in Europe have gone into lockdowns or closed theatres. So I wonder what the numbers would have been if these new restrictions hadn't come in yet
Spiderman will break 1B by New Year because of that A+ CinemaScore and the holiday week. The only thing that could keep it is if markets start shutting down because of Omicron but that won't happen in the US. Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous surprised me with how much I like it.
Hey Dan! I've been working at a theater in my college town since August, and the theater has never been this busy. All the seat are full (even Monday night) and I just realized its going to be even busier becuase of the Matrix coming out on Wednesday. People said Tenet would bring people back to theaters, little did they know.
BIG QUESTION FOR DAN! How much can box office number be effected by theatre owners if they choose not to offer many screenings? Are theatres required to provide a certain number of showings per movie? When I went to buy my ticket for The Matrix: Ressureections, there were only 4 showtimes available at my local theatre. Meaning that the owners are choosing to only dedicate 1 theatre to the matrix, and almost ALL the rest are going to Spider-Man! I feel like the matrix’s box office will be effected by something like this. Not because more people choose Spider-Man week two over the matrix, but because there’s simply not capacity for that many people to go and see the matrix
I know that some studios like Disney have contractual obligations about which theaters play for films and for how long (sometimes even dictating which auditoriums will be booked based on size). I don't know what the terms are with WB but given that it's a hybrid release, I'm sure a lot of theater owners aren't too anxious to give it more theaters when they could fill up others with Spider-Man crowds. But yes - it could affect the film's box office take.
It's not "offficially" a Disney film, but didn't they negotiate a third of the funding and cut of all Tom Holland Spider-Man films in the compromise deal?
I agree with Dan that Fellowship is the best of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. This is partly because I think it sticks more faithfully to the book without some of the narrative shortcuts and deviations seen in the other two, but also I think Sean Bean as Boromir adds a lot.
I have been supporting the cinema I go to every week and trying to see a movie twice or three times, only the The Star wars movies where i saw more than 4 to 6 times. This Christmas is such a good time to see all my favorite movies.
As an MCU movie I loved No Way Home. IMO if were talking about it as a film, its not really a film. I just got done watching early 2000's Xmen (1&2) and Spiderman(1&2), and compared to those, I don't get the same feeling like I'm watching an actual film with any of the mcu movies. I think Super hero movies (atleast Spiderman) should have a sense of realism and feel like a film if its a movie. Most if not all of the MCU movies have this superficial manufactured feel. I still enjoy them quite a bit but wish they felt more organic. Ironically seeing the 3 Spidey's interact was the most organic thing I feel like the MCU has given us.
Dan, do you think the fact that "The Matrix" being half pulled out of imax has anything to do with it streaming on HBO Max. Like a way for the theaters to stick WB the middle finger a little?
I thought Spider-Man was fun. But I'm beside myself seeing the return of movie going en masse, which some predicted would never recover. It's a bit of a Christmas miracle. Something to be cheerful about.
I have been so annoyed at the discourse on Twitter this weekend with people saying people going to see spider man instead of other movies is the death of cinema. Perhaps in a way it is but it is no ones fault and declaring “the masses” dumb doesn’t help anyone. Going to the cinema as an activity you do without it being for a special movie is dead it is too expensive, why would people flock out to see the new West Side Story when most of them haven’t even seen the old one.

My theater is weirdly cheaper. I still have my tickets for infinity war and endgame and I noticed they were a dollar more expensive.
@@colindavidch I’ve had A-List since 2019. It’s like $25/month for me and the Thursday Spider-Man Dolby ticket was like $22-practically paid for itself. I’ve been to the movies 5 times this month and expect to go at least two more.
Dan's charting episode of the year!
My monday is complete my life has meaning thank you Dan!!
Before the pandemic we would go see at least one movie a month and Spider-Man was the movie that brought us back to theaters
I was very eager to see Spider-Man, but because of rising case numbers in my area I figured I'd avoid the weekend and weeknights, and see a showing with less of a crowd.
That's ok since I'm on vacation.
My brother, who I planned on seeing it with, also happened to have monday and tuesday off.
"So monday afternoon then?"
"Well I still have some xmas shopping to do, can we do tuesday instead?"
I said sure, I can wait an extra day.
Come monday afternoon and the government just shut down theaters, effective starting tonight until further notice.
Guess I'll have to actively avoid spoilers for a while yet.
Me getting the cnn alerts for spidey’s box office but also me ignoring it to wait for Dan to break everything down
Saw No Way Home four times this opening weekend alone. Once on opening Thursday night (crowd was WILD), again on Saturday in Dolby Cinema, and twice on Sunday back to back showings. Thinking about going again and it really says a lot considering I rarely rewatch most movies. I think it’s safe to say that I loved this movie.
I am so happy to have come across your channel! I’m a former theater manager and Blockbuster video manager and I am really sad that box office mojo format has totally changed since being bought out by IMDb. Thank you so much for sharing the numbers with me! I’m looking forward to next week’s numbers! I’m excited to have an entertaining source to get the data that I crave 😍
was really excited for this episode of charts!!!!!!!
I've been anxiously awaiting this video from you, Dan.
Who knew 'No Way Home' was gonna *SWING* it's way to box office records!
Buh dum *tish*
Imagine being Tom Holland. You’re in three of the most successful movies of all time, one of them is your own movie, and you’re only 25.
And most impressive of all, he is dating Zendaya.
To be fair, Tom has a eternal teenage look. I dont think his career is gonna be big after he hits 30.
Well not to knock his success down but the movies do well cause of the character, not the actor. He does play the character well
@@travisbickle4360 He is at bigger risk of being pigeon-holed, yes. He probably can continue doing youthful roles as long as he still looks the part, but the nightmare of any serious actor is to be typecast. The kinds of roles he will choose to do post Spiderman will be instrumental in deciding whether he gets longevity in Hollywood, or must retire.
@@runninginsept He will have to follow Elijah woods , Daniel Radcliff, and go to indies
Great show this week, Dan!
I love this program! You really put together interesting information! Thank you!
Been waiting whole day. What a weekend for No Way Home 😃
Solo Spiderman movies does the same box office as Marvel movies with C and D list Marvel characters
You cant compare once in a life time crossover movie to average Marvel movie. Remember Amazing Spiderman 2 just made 460 million which forced Sony to run to Kevin Feige for a Reboot.
I hope Sony won’t think the same and sink MCU ship.
That movie wouldn’t be so successful on its own.
I'm sure it helps that he is supposed to be a young kid, whereas the Marvel characters came to be identified with specific actors with specific ages.
I’m 30, female & I’ve been going to the theaters almost every week watching movies with my daughter. We saw Spider-Man on Thursday night & that’s the most crowded I’ve seen the theater all year.
@@rsrocha1984 China has a huge population. Its the same way America's domestic box office is often nearly the same as the worldwide box office for a film. Population size
@@forwhy8723 As I said, when you talk about consuming a product, GDP counts not population. Brazil, for example, has a population 4 times bigger than englant, but since englant has a bigger GDP usually their BoxOffice total are bigger than Brazil. Movies are a product, what counts is people who have the money to consume the product (therefore, the country GDP) not the total amount of people.
LET’S GO! “Charts, Charts, Charts!”
How much you wanna bet that all these studio number crunchers just wait for Dan's weekly slides and "borrow" them for their own reports.
Haha I can imagine that😂..."So you're telling me that, according to Dan, we beat all the Star Wars movies??? Duuuuude!"
I look forward to your box office breakdowns the most in general. And was especially excited to see your analysis of the Spidey box office.
Waiting for this! Lets go!
This week’s show made me so happy. 🙂
Is Sony is smart they will never end that Marvel relationship lol
I think you mean Disney. Sony forced Marvel into this movie and the spider verse.
@@huntsman528 yes the mouse house..Marvel Studios made the movie...Sony just distributed it and marketed it.
@@schouse umm, no. That isn't how Sony marvel movies work. Sony holds all of the power in this relationship and forced venom into the MCU.
@@huntsman528 clearly with the post cr edit scene feige and company said "not today" lol. Does Sony own the rights to live action or animated Spidey movies yes..what I was saying was Sony better not try to end the MCU/Disney relationship like they tried to years ago BC its providing them a whole lot of cash and do you really trust Sony without the MCU involvement? I don't thats why the made the deal in the first place. BC they rebooted Spidey after Raimi and got no where near the acclaim that Watts Spidey films are getting bc if what the ties to the MCU/Disney.
@@schouse Sony told Disney they wanted Venom in the MCU and Disney told them no way. Disney then told Sony they wanted half of the revenue from the Sony movies and Sony said F you. Sony won big on this movie because Spiderman is now the biggest character in the world and Sony is 1000% setup for the Spiderverse and it's connected to the MCU. Sony gets to have their cake and eat it too. Disney is very much at Sony's mercy and the MCU needs Spiderman.
He's taken over the box office! Such a menace!
I don't think I have ever seen a UA-camr be so elated at being proven wrong!
The movie was such a great experience!
Thanks Dan and Mara for another great show!
I'm living in a bubble of anxiety since the covid started, here in italy we got hit pretty hard at the begginin of It so i Guess i still have anxiety from the red zone lockdown. That said is the first time i went to cinema since the pandemic... totally worth It even thou everytime i heard someone coughing made me kinda have anxiety xD damn this pandemic is f up my mental health. I can't go out without beign scared to catch a virus.
Did not expect it to do that well 👏
Obviously Omicron is out there so that is hanging over things, but assuming that doesn't cause huge closures of theaters, isn't it great to be talking about holiday box office numbers again?
I've been dying for this episode ever since I got word of NWH's figures. I love this show and I've never been more happy at you being wrong
Steve Deiko too. People forget Marvel had other artist too and it was collaboration. Not just Stan Lee
@@travisbickle4360 Lee and Ditko were thanked in the same line of the credits. I think a lot of people know that he was an important part of Marvel's history. It's just that Lee was the face of Marvel for so long (and a big hype-man for the characters) so he's referenced more often.
I am in complete agreement about the Fellowship being the best of the LotR films (and the best book, I think). My enjoyment of your shows and film criticism feels so validated.
Charts with Dan is getting exciting again. Big records being broken!
I went to see it alone a 3pm on thursday even though i had tickets from friday with friends cause i couldnt wait. And now movie theaters are closed in Quebec and I'm sad I wont go again :(
Cinemas were shut down today in Montreal and the rest of the province because omicron is out of control. We reported our highest case counts ever in the past 5 days. My only chance now is to see it in Toronto later this week.
Good luck and stay safe.
@@aprilperrault9438 Thanks!
Have you seen the movie yourself?
Saw it in Monterey Park, California last month. A big sloppy mess. Not worth your time unless you want to laugh at the comically villainous portrayals of the Americans and that's a small fraction of the 3-hour runtime.
I am so happy the BITS index is back!
I haven't seen a movie more than once in theatres since Black Panther (which I saw 3 times). But I'm fairly certain I'm going to a second showing of Spidey this week (this time in IMAX).
The BITS are back!!
Of course spiders have wings. Nickelback sang about it. In a Spider-man movie!
What a throwback 😂
As always, thank you so very much for the video.
And best wishes of the season to you and associates.
Wow Dan!!! This is my first time watching your break down on the box office. You really do your home work. Wow!!! Great break down. I look forward to seeing your box office break down next week. Geez, that’s was very informative ☺️👍
I know! Long time watcher, but his keen eye for data analysis never ceases to amaze
@@emmag938 lol ☺️👍
Our cinemas here were forced to go to 50% capacity for this weekend and from Monday have to be closed by 8 and a lot of countries in Europe have gone into lockdowns or closed theatres. So I wonder what the numbers would have been if these new restrictions hadn't come in yet
Well deserved hopefully this stays a trend for marvel and other Hollywood movies, produce quality movies and people will show up.
Spiderman will break 1B by New Year because of that A+ CinemaScore and the holiday week. The only thing that could keep it is if markets start shutting down because of Omicron but that won't happen in the US. Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous surprised me with how much I like it.
yes but the world is shutting down again and no china will hurt it
@@johansvensson833 Not opening in China will not stop it from making 1B. It just would have crossed that mark faster but it is hitting 1B soon.
I am surprised Spider-Man 3 is on the Box Office list. I did not realize it did so well compared to the other Tobey McGuire Spider-Man films.,
Thanks Dan, those numbers were crazy.
Hey Dan! I've been working at a theater in my college town since August, and the theater has never been this busy. All the seat are full (even Monday night) and I just realized its going to be even busier becuase of the Matrix coming out on Wednesday. People said Tenet would bring people back to theaters, little did they know.
Thanks, Dan! Love the deep dive into the numbers. Headline: Masked-Moneymaker Spider-Man Saves Theaters!
Yeah 25% cut
I agree with Dan that Fellowship is the best of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. This is partly because I think it sticks more faithfully to the book without some of the narrative shortcuts and deviations seen in the other two, but also I think Sean Bean as Boromir adds a lot.
Thought 'Power of the Dog' was good, glad to know your thoughts on it. I'm not that into podcasts but I'll listen in to learn your take of that film.
I saw it twice this weekend, and broughtsomeone each time.
I was waiting for this episode since you tried predicting what Spider-man would do. I was way off the mark myself haha
Biggest box office upset
cocomelon: the movie
with a domestic opening of 400 billion dollars
😆 🤣 😂 I hope you meant to say 400 million dollars
I have been supporting the cinema I go to every week and trying to see a movie twice or three times, only the The Star wars movies where i saw more than 4 to 6 times. This Christmas is such a good time to see all my favorite movies.
I saw Spiderman 4 times over the weekend seeing Nightmare Alley tonight. I did feel bad not giving the latter any money to make weekend look better
I have been waiting for this.
Always enjoy watching as a Dan fan… as I am!
great to see people returning to the cinema in big numbers
Literally crying happy tears
Saw Spidey 5 times over the weekend
After the spoiler review, this is the video I've been waiting for most all.
This goes to show, if you make a good movie the fans know they will enjoy, they will come.
