  • The holiday season is bringing high-tech offerings for U.S. war veterans this year in the form of sophisticated bionic arms developed under the direction of DARPA's Revolutionizing Prosthetics program. In a ceremony December 22 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, Md., Justin Sanchez, Director of DARPA’s Biological Technologies Office, delivered the first two advanced “LUKE” arms from a new production line-shiny evidence that the fast-track DARPA research effort has completed its transition into a commercial enterprise. As part of that transition process, DARPA is collaborating with WRNMMC to make the advanced prostheses available to Service members and veterans who are rehabilitating after suffering upper-limb loss.
    The LUKE Arm ("Life Under Kinetic Evolution") is the first commercially available FDA-approved robotic prosthetic arm. It is manufactured by Mobius Bionics LLC of Manchester, N.H.

    Big salute to everyone involved at DARPA and Walter Reed for this incredibly commendable effort and accomplishment. I hope it also sees speedy availability through technology transfer to sick and injured civilians everywhere.

    DARPA should open source the design on the web. Imagine how quickly the design can improve if millions of engineers take a look. It won't cost a penny, open sourcing is free (wikipedia and Linux are good examples of successful open sourced projects). unless profit is the motivation and not helping soldiers.

      Some aspects of our prosthetics work are open source. The HAPTIX program uses open-source Gazebo simulation software to test designs for restoring a sense of touch to amputees. www.osrfoundation.org/haptix-simulation-of-prosthetic-devices/We also provide some of the research papers from the Revolutionizing Prosthetics program in DARPA's Open Catalog: opencatalog.darpa.mil/RP.html. And in addition to the LUKE Arm shown in this video, we've also developed the Modular Prosthetic Limb. Details available at: www.jhuapl.edu/prosthetics/scientists/mpl.asp.

      seth ducati agree with complete open sourcing as there is no doubt his technology, etal, is needed & simply wonderful, however, while there is money to be made from war, people will make money from prosthetics, calling into question sincerity. Our current global socioeconomic systems viability i.e. 'labor for income' is being increasingly eroded by automation and so is no longer relevant in our current modern technological context, as are none of the "ism's" of the past! We need to redesign our global socioeconomic system, I repeat NONE of the "ism's" of the past are relevant.

    The Drastic improvement of "Simple" Medical procedures, Can mean SO much to a Person. Its Great to see Programs with the Resources, advance the ScienceTech in Prosthetics needed to make such things possible. Especially for those who Sacrifice for Good Causes, or even Victims of needless combat.. my hopes for them are the same.

    Hey guys I do have question. Would it be possible to us such a limb like the Luke arm or other dynamic shoulder/arm/hand prosthetics with upper body exoskeletons such as the Myomo MyoPro? I know that exoskeleton is for rehabilitation but I guess the idea I had in mind was for reducing fatigue on the residual limb or agumenting the loss of strenght after? Thank again guys.

    Bionic hand from DARPA, huh? Does it help from phantom pain?

    • @DARPAtv
      @DARPAtv  7 років тому

      This arm does not on its own reduce the feeling of phantom limb pain, but we do have another research effort underway that is tackling that problem. The HAPTIX program is working to restore a sense of touch to users of prosthetic limbs. Doing so would reduce phantom limb pain and provide a sense of embodiment and proprioception (i.e., knowing where the limb is in space relative to the body). www.darpa.mil/program/hand-proprioception-and-touch-interfaces

    So how close is this to the John Hopkins MPL in ways of dexterity, strength and fluidity of movment and response?

    • @DARPAtv
      @DARPAtv  7 років тому +6

      The Modular Prosthetic Limb is more dexterous, but it is, at this point, primarily a research tool that was designed to test the limits of what is possible using direct neural control of the limb--that level of complexity is required to take full advantage of the MPL's many degrees of freedom. Thus, it is being tested by volunteers with paralysis who have had brain surgery to implant recording and stimulating electrodes. (The MPL can also be tele-operated for applications such as bomb disposal, but those applications use a glove to control movements.) The LUKE Arm represents the cutting edge of technology for what it is--an advanced robotic prosthetic hand and arm that delivers improved quality of life and greater independence to amputees. There is no invasive surgery required to use the arm, meaning it is available to a far wider number of people, and it can be controlled in a number of ways, including with inertial measurement sensors worn elsewhere on the body. Not only is it FDA-approved and commercially available, it is also modular so that it can be used by people who have lost an entire arm, partial arm, or a hand. You can learn more about the two systems at: www.mobiusbionics.com/the-luke-arm.html and www.jhuapl.edu/prosthetics/scientists/default.asp.
