all it goes to show was how shitty the company was at making a robot. wich was the films point. greed leading to terrible bad solutions and shitty products.
01:30 ED-209 would probably applaud while shedding a tear watching this. The design is dorky as hell but damn sure impressive and probably expandable to 3 or more legs for added stability. Walk animation and looks reminded me of a Robot from one of the old Star Wars Movies.
Looks like the robots off of the old school ninja turtles cartoon that catches Bebop and Rocksteady from the zoo. A lot of the technology shredded used is popular today ie. technidrone and handheld Skype devices.
It should be noted that while this is proper bipedal locomotion it isn't a natural biological gait. Look at how the feet remain parallel to the ground as the leg lifts and swings forward. A natural gait has the foot flex from heel to toe at the end of the stride and lands on the heel at the beginning. This type of motion makes it very cumbersome to move quickly.
Human looking robots are usually built for telepresence purposes. It is also much easier for human looking robots to interact with pre-existing objects that are designed for humans. We also try to emulate mechanisms found in nature, as they are seen as extremely efficient and appropriate in various environments.
These look damn impressive. Great designs too, as opposed to the inefficient, top heavy humanoid designs people usually try to go for, for what ever reason that may be.
Not really, our biological design is incredibly inefficient when used in robotics. Unless we find better ways to store large quantities of energy, or make actuation of limbs use less energy, its not a practical choice.
SCHAFT? Is it a reference to Patlabor? "The robot is only a demonstrator. It is not for sale. The one that we sell is the team - the people behind the robot." - SCHAFT Director from Patlabor TV series.
2:15 - Lovely! Pleased that the engineers took robo-chan to the beach - with luck our masters will look back at this snippet of video and conclude that some of us are worth saving.
+James Garry "First they slid pipes under my feet, then made me walk on hot stones and finally forced me to walk right up to a sloshing mass of corrosive liquid. But the final straw was one UA-camr who expected me to be thankful!"
no.. they are separate companies that Google owns, with Boston Dynamics they want to sell them because Boston Dynamics has no plans of making a product to sell, there are some other companies that Google will be selling as well.
+KaiiKiller us goverment wil buy them and in 10 years release robot soldiers that will kill entire cities in minutes....and folks like isis will not stand a chance
James Lan at first I was feeling weird seeing a shirt like that , I was kind of getting a feeling maybe a football Jersey then they zoomed in along with I scrolled Down to your comment
Build them with wood/bamboo (or at least make it look like it's made of wood/bamboo), decorate them with traditional Shinto symbols and clothing, give them retractable arms, and you'll have the coolest Japanese shrine caretaker in the world. ⛩
exactly. why does it have to look / walk like a humanoid biped. as longs as it can keep its balance - perfect solution. finally, no bizarre joint necessary, simple hydraulics and we can have our robot overlords now! yay! :)
1:45 There ought to be an 8 hour youtube video of robots walking through nature with only ambient sounds, use a 4k camera on a tripod.
I like this idea. maybe do a time lapse cut with one standing in a clearing through seasonal changes.
The ancestor of T.A.R.S.
aerospike00 lmao
Ed-209 can make it down the steps now, have to remake Robocop again.
all it goes to show was how shitty the company was at making a robot.

SAHELANTHROPUS! THE WORLD'S FIRST BIPEDAL TANK!
Dark event: Google joined Advent, begins Sectopod development
hahaha noooooo
Just now that I'm beginning to use extruded aluminum I keep seeing even more applications with it, and these are amazing to say the least.
check out the Taig lathe.
Yeah, the little box walking is amazing, but the robot in the T-shirt on stage is incredible!
Designed in 1972 "Silent Running"
+benbennit,Undoubtedly!
+benbennit I thought of that & TARS.

YOU HAVE 15 SECONDS TO COMPLY!
Enforcement Droid ED-209 what did they do with your guns?
I see Dalek can now climb stairs. We're screwed.
+Nate Jagger Daleks don't climb, Daleks elevate
@1:23 Lay down your weapon, YOU HAVE 10 SECONDS TO COMPLY.
this guy watched too much interstellar
Reminds me of the bots in the movie Silent Running.
Cheers, lads.

This is how robots should look like - practical and to their faculties. None of that useless anthropomorphic crap.

I wonder if they could make a version with knees ?

10 more yrs.
Big as a car and loaded with guns.
lol 10? why? 3 at most my friend XD
it's probably already in development right now,
This is how the development for ED-209 started.
Thats a beautiful schaft
Now kick it and see if it can stay up right like Boston Dynamics robots.
Google now want to sell Boston Dynamics... Boston Dynamics have nothing to do with the robot in this video.
no.. they are separate companies that Google owns, with Boston Dynamics they want to sell them because Boston Dynamics has no plans of making a product to sell, there are some other companies that Google will be selling as well.

It is correctly done that bipedal robot with a circular platform for the upper part of body to rest on it while the hands can do work.
so this is how our future terminator would look like
1:15 a robot does not forget. one day you will pay for that
They will revenge by putting legos under our feet.
Looks like a mech when it walks up the stairs with its legs behind it, hopefully they can upscale it and make a rideable one
Robocop ED-260 legs? Or Gravity robot?
Sweeet,goor work Schaft.
Murph don't let me leave !
its like a 1970's starwars robot.
Looking better than StarWars droids.
Scary.
I'd like to see it dancing with Atlas
Very impressive !
Got nothin' on Boston Dynamics
so it begins.
Finally one that works with the lowest parts..
That's adorable!
This looks like something that belongs in star wars
Metal Gear?
MOO
Patlabor?
Little brother of ED-209
so far they've kicked the shit outa darpa
+AirplaneRandy More like Metal Bear! xD
give it treadmill wheels and a cylindrical body and you got yourself an R2D2
I like it. Kinda different. It has a very function vs. form kinda look going on though.
This is the start of something.
This is really impressive.
+Hans611. Lol. +Melinda Green, that didn't take long.

ummmm is that a smaller ED-209 fro RoboCop ?
Cool! In maby 10 jears there will be the first BattleMech ! ;)
Jo tinc aquesta samarreta. La del centenari!
it is amazing
Silly Google, everybody knows that only Terminators and Bender units walk out of the sea... Oh, Wait a minute...
0:52 , I picture a legless person intead of the barbell...
I came here expecting metal gear references.
I wonder if they got the name Schaft from the Patlabor anime series.
long retractable bendable legs with a lowered center of mass. interestring.
nice AT-AT
+Ofer Zak at-at's had 4 legs, try again.
Google cracked the code for walking on two legs. Looks great :-)
This will transfer the future, when everyone got one in their home.
And the robot has a restraining order out on that creepy pushing dude from Boston Dynamics!
0:54 Do you even LIFT BRO?!?!
Also, 2:46 = the future
wow theyre making a real life tars from interstellar
That is rad as fuck.
This robot is well endowed
Soon the humans will say! "Dey tok ourr jabz"!
Google conference > Apple's iPhone camera sound everywhere.

If it had a wheel in the center it would be able to roll in flat surfaces and be much faster
I'll be impressed/worried when this thing can go 20 mph
+vampcaff And hang drywall.
+vampcaff I'll be impressed when people are able to be impressed again.
Which football team does the presenter root for? Just wondering.
ED-209 predecessor.
Pretty Fucking impressive..
so...half a robot is walking around...where's the upper half?
this is the bot from interstellar i swear lol
A weapon to surpass metal gear!
This is scary stuff haha
Cool

Beautifull. Still, a pair of HANDS would come handy don't you think?!
