  • DARPA’s SideArm research effort seeks to create a self-contained, portable apparatus able to horizontally launch and retrieve unmanned aerial systems (UASs) of up to 900 pounds.
In December 2016, Aurora Flight Sciences successfully tested a full-scale technology demonstration system that repeatedly captured a 400-pound Lockheed Martin Fury UAS accelerated to representative flight speeds via an external catapult. The system is capable of recovering aircraft up to 1,100 pounds-exceeding DARPA’s design objectives-and furthers the project’s goal of supporting larger UASs up to 1,320 pounds.
SideArm is part of DARPA’s individual investment in Phase 1 research for Tern, a joint program between DARPA and the U.S. Navy’s Office of Naval Research (ONR). Now that demonstration of the capture system is complete, DARPA is working to identify potential transition partners and exploring using SideArm with other UAS platforms.

Almost thought for a moment they wanted to catch enemy planes xD

Really cool video. I can see this tech having a lot of uses in the future.

The obvious next step here is automate it. Have these bad boys chugging out Tern's as fast as possible.

Better to use google "Project Wing" concept
    vertical takeoff and landing
    no need for landing gear

I can see it being used in a ship configuration. Not so much in ground mobile system.

Why not just a net? Barely any moving parts and no extra modifications for the drones?

That big needs a road as a runway, wait, theres roads everywhere! And the truck needs roads too. Net is cheaper. Or better software to make it land where it took off.

Reminds me of the net system used to catch the Aquila drones, which was MUCH cheaper to pull off.

Like that project, the biggest issue is not how you catch the bird, but rather being able to fly it directly into the center of the catch mech..

Seems like a great way to cause damage to expensive devices. Create a drone that can take off like a helicopter then rotate the engines to fly normally. No strain on the device at the pole or by slamming the nose into a net at high speed.

We're working on such a concept with our VTOL X-Plane program. www.darpa.mil/news-events/2016-03-03 However, the Sidearm system offers increased portability and flexibility and can be used in smaller spaces.

Interesting. I feel what the world, and especially our troops in future engagements, will need is drone-hunting drones. The evidence in the Ukraine is that small, nearly un-hunted, drones are identifying targets in low-light conditions, and then relaying the video back for accurate artillery or motor fire. To send our troops in against a technologically-capable opponent would be criminal without either autonomous or controlled drones to scoop-up, net or knock-down the enemy drones already in the skies at night. I know it's a stretch to make a radar or radio-freq-guided unit small enough to put on the front of a drone-hunting drone, but I don't see us getting easily past that.

Rather than building a $10 million capture system, why not just make the drone capable of landing?

Good luck r&d'ing a landable aircraft on a landing runway as short as this system for less than 10 mil smart ass.
