Euphoria was shot with an extremely low ISO in highly overlit sets. The actors felt like they were shooting a sitcom, but all of that was compensating for the lack of light that the camera would ultimately capture.
That’s interesting because this season felt like the characters were getting a good look at themselves and their lives, actions, and messes. Like watching a sitcom with the laugh track off. And then they were like “oh… this isn’t funny…” That’s hella dope!
I think they also shot with kdv3 500t, shooting all ektachrome 100 would be costly.

The same was true for The Lighthouse, I think even more so due to it being shot on black & white film

The problem is that you're forgetting the texture. Softening the image is not all about the overall contrast or adding bloom / mist and so on. It's about removing the digital clarity that certainly gives away that someone is . Blurring out the hight frequencies. Dialing back something like midtone detail. And also... Gaussian blur, gang, 0.12-0.15 or something else depending on your shot. Replicate option. Then add a touch of sharpening back. You could also add more grain, you went way too mild, the blacks and the highlights should roll off more accurately, film emulation has a lot of nuances.

Yeah, the vibe of vibing from the vibe of the vibing vibe is how they're vibing.
Great video! With Ektachrome 100, its technically one of the most accurately white balanced films you can buy and doesn't add vibrant punchy colors to anything really but is contrasty and will really emphasize directional lighting. The biggest contribution to the crazy color was that while Ecktachrome is a transparency film (color positive) they actually processed the film as color negative film instead which adds a lot of coloring and a green/yellow tint which is apparent in most of the scenes. When I read that, having also shot ektachrome and cross processing it myself, I realized how familiar the coloring was. Pretty cool stuff. There's a great read on Indiewire.
The scene recreations look awesome. Nice work. It seems that Ektachrome 100 really does a good job of creating a kind of golden skin tone. Even pale complexion on a overcast day can have a golden / bronze type hue that digital and certainly other film stocks have trouble replicating. You can really see it at 6:33.
This is one of my fav videos of yours lately. You got some really great looking shots! Between Euphoria and stuff like Licorice Pizza I feel like this high contrast stuff looks way more interesting than the typical flat marvel-y look most things have these days

They killed it using ektachrome 16mm scanned film. such a iconic film type for this look that we all see now in music videos and commercials. Dexter navy definitely pioneered this film to be used in todays world.

Awesome video, as always, Spenser! Only thing i'd do different while coloring this would be taking some of the red out of the image. It's so close to the actual look of euphoria, but I feel like there was still a lot of red in the skintones specially. Anyway, great content!

in shot one i think they're using two flags - one to the left to get some real shadown on the near lower side of the dudes face and the second to the right of the key light to again, draw some shadow onto the wall behind him - such a beautiful set up
film has a forgiveness in the highlights that digital doesnt, i would have softened the light even more, i mean you are pretty dead on with your sets ups.. love it.

When I studied photography in the later 89's I rarely used Ektrachrome. It was rather cold and blue in tint. Fujifilm had better contrast and very very deep greens. The skin tones were better than Ektrachrome for olive coloured skin tones. My go to colour film was Kodachrome, as Simon and Garfunkel sang, "Gives us lifes bright colours" Iford had the best black and white.
Dope breakdown. Since you’re watching horror, having seen “Them” (tv series) on Prime? I’m drawn to their anamorphic looks, and their camera compositions. Your video breakdown has inspired me to practice shots I enjoy from “Them”.
Ha, guess we really just want everything to look like Deakins even if it doesn't! To be fair though, dingy bathroom, high contrast, warm vibes, that all just screams No Country For Old Men to me.
For the first setup you did I wouldve probably just bounced a spotlight to the ceiling with molton taped on it. This gives you a fairly soft top light which is pretty much what you were searching for I think.
Great job. Personally I prefer a kino-flow over the nova just because I can flag the direction of the light. So it doesnt spill all over.

Being a hungarian myself, it always feel proud when great cinematopgrahers like you praise Rév Marcell, the dp of Euphoria :D Really close image. I would add some film grain in post, to have that filmic look, you know maybe with Filmconvert, but the lightning itself nails it! Btw what kind of fog machine do you use?

you should try shooting it on film. Kodak Ektachrome is a color reversal film. It has a very limited latitude for exposure, compared to 10 stops ish you get from a negative stock.
Its available on 16mm and super8. You might even be able to find 100' rolls of 35mm. Send it to a lab, get a flat scan at 2k or 4k and you are in business!

What kind of iso did you shoot that bathroom scene? How’d you get such clean shadows in the darkness?
I'm in love with your content. could you do more test with panasonic S5 et meike T2.1? i'm like should i go with gh6 with all my good 0.95 lenses and 18-35 sigma or pick s5 used and 2 meike t2.1 lenses
I think the shadow side can be brigthen up a bit to get more detail.
Makes sense to ditch the FD lens, as Zeiss vintage is the cleanest most neutral, most ‘modern’ of vintage lenses.
Great video! The only ingredient missing is Dehancer. The plug in is worth the $399 and is the closest thing to film. Especially when you factor that 4 minutes (400 ft) of 35mm film stock alone without processing and transfer is $364.
I don't know man, resolve 17 now has all the features ready at hand (halation, luts, grain, gate weave,...). there's no need for an extra plugin.
@@BoyXx76 I just started to play with the built in Davinci Resolve features and you are correct. Using color space transform to Cineon and then applying the built in film emulation LUT, and some tweaking, and I was able to achieve a great result. I guess I'll save the $399 to buy Dehancer. Haha. If you are bored, try proding at the themes that are explored in the movies. I started doing that and boy oh boy now I'm never ever bored while watching anything. Even if the movie is garbage there's so much shit to uncover and dissect.
Start with colonialism, it's very common in movies since most of them are made in the West. But you'll have to do some serious research before you understand the extent of what colonialism is and how still affects people and how movies and TV affect our perception of Colonialism.
Yt channel: Folding Ideas. It is a good starting point to understand what kind of themes can be explored in movies. Dan does are very good job of explaining how different themes are explored in movies (both intentionally and unintentionally)
