As a carpenter of 70 I can still hang a half hour fire door in less then one hour , I let in the hinge on the door only and just screw the hinge on the frame so if it expands then just chop in hinge on frame : and no router, just a good old hammer and chisel, also a
Mortise lock , 30 min , if the frame is M D F then I just go to the pub , great commentary ,

Well done Terry! And to follow it up with a trip down the pub is always a must! If you are around Essex I’m always up for a pint 😂

By far the best tutorial on cutting a hinge with a router
Super close up video footage , detailed explanation ,
The way a tutorial should be
Loved the tip drilling pilot hole slightly Back and also loved the top putting the hinge upside down with knuckle facing down to correctly position hinge
Most I’ve watched , people had camera 20 foot away and couldn’t see a absolute thing on what they were doing
    Liked and subscribed 👍

Keen DIYer and I’ve done quite a few hinges - usually quite badly. Watched your video and really liked the depth using the hinge trip. Applied what I’d learnt on new oak doors and the result was (with being big headed) absolutely perfect so thank you. I lived the off centre pilot holes trick too. Thank you

Thanks! That's some helpful tips. I'm always struggling with hinges for some reason, but you make it look easy. Think I will have to give chisels (and planers!) on soft wood another go 👍🏼

I'm a novice but I'd like to try and make it work before I call a contractor. My interior doors (6 of them) are 49.5 pounds each and I hate to take them off the hinges to router out a section for the door handle's latch and the receiving section on the frame, but I guess its the thing to do. I've started on one and I've got an ugly wound with my dull chisels! I'm hoping that some wood putty and paint will cover my work...Very glad to get some perspective from someone who knows what in the hell their doing! lol!

great video, thx! I dont quit get why you drilled the wood hole towards the back of the hinge hole instead of centering it. Can you explain why you wouldn't just position the hinge exactly where you want it from the start, and center the drill holes?

    • @matthewsenior9751
      @matthewsenior9751 29 днів тому +2

Having the pilot holes off centre and away from the edge, means that the hinge is pulled into the section you have routered out. Makes a tighter fit, it's optional.

      Maybes easier ??
      Maybes quicker ??
But defo not at neat and tidy
But guess that doesn’t often matter as most trademen I’ve seen in the past are not neat or tidy but quick
But the results also show quick
Nice to see a guy taking pride in his work and sharing tips
