NARROWBOAT Living - CHASED along the towpath … Does he want US?! Ep90
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 кві 2024
- In this week’s vlog, we cruise our NARROWBOAT floating home from Crick Wharf at bridge 12, through to just before the Braunston Tunnel! The tunnel is so wet, my camera gets soaked! We see how a butty boat is taken through locks without an engine and we work the Watford Locks on our own, without the volunteer lockies!! We get diesel and a pumpout at a lovely marina, then try to carry on up to Norton Junction ….. however, watch, to find out why we end up going back the way we came! After a ‘noisy’ night, we wind the boat and cruise back past the marina and turn right at Norton Junction. Martin starts to prepare for his nemesis Braunston Tunnel and takes a quick look break. On his way back to the helm, Martin notices someone running …. is he after us? Keep watching to find out!
Hope you enjoy this video! 😃 xx

If you’re new to our channel, just a little introduction. We are Julie and Martin and in 2021 we sold our house and gave up our jobs, to live full time on a narrowboat. We bought our 2004 narrowboat Rhapsody in Blue in the September and have been living full time onboard ever since. We hadn’t intended on vlogging, but recorded videos for ourselves and family and it has escalated into the weekly vlogs you see today, so lovely to have you all onboard! ❤️
Please join us as we continuously cruise the inland waterways of the UK, sharing our cruises and adventures with you all, thank you! ❤️
We’ve made a couple of playlists for you too, one with all our favourite cruises and the other is all of our vlogs from the beginning, so you can binge watch to see where we’ve been so far! There’s also a walk through of our narrowboat home too, come inside and see how we live. ❤️

Please, stop using the word "literally", it's incredibly annoying and makes you sound like a 2010 teenager.
@@markjones1337Thanks for your feedback Mark, I didn’t realise I did that on our videos, or that it could be annoying. I used to get ribbed at work that I always said literally, it’s one of those words, I’ll try and be more aware of it. However, being compared to a 2010 teenager, I’ll take that as a compliment lol 😜 Thanks Mark xx

The SRN-4 hovercraft which operated on the Dover to Calais and Boulogne crossing an the Pegwell Bay to France had a design life of ten years but were kept going long beyond that thanks to the dedication of the engineering staff. Long after the marine Proteus engines became obsolete, the company was buying anything which used that engine for spare parts. The former hovercraft terminal at Pegwell Bay became a breaker’s yard after Hoverlloyd and Seaspeed merged to form Hoverspeed.
Oh wow, great info, thank you! xx

Wonderful vlog! The view looking through bridge 11 towards Crick tunnel and coming out of the tunnel looking at bridge 10 was so beautiful, they would make a nice painting. Have a good week. 😃
Hi Donna, this area is so beautiful, I love that approach to the tunnel and always love it when we exit tunnels, to see the new landscape the other side. Thank you so much! xx
Don't forget some people have to live on a marina because their health niggles force it . Sometimes they are on their own or new to the life . Once you get to a certain age the locks may prove too great a challenge. But it's a nice community on a lock and travelling days out may need to be by car . I love your videos xx
Hi Angie, yes of course, you’ll remember us saying in a previous video, that when the time comes that we are unable to work the locks and swing bridges, that we will look for a garden mooring, or a marina mooring, as we just love living on the water! We also really enjoyed our time in the marina and have many friends still there. For the time being though, we are enjoying roaming around the waterways and seeing new places, views and people! Thank you so much Angie! xx
Another packed informative vid. Thank you. The pump and and fuel charges mentioned in a previous video were disgraceful glad you found a realist 🎉
Hi Nick & Debbie, yes, we’re glad we passed the other one by and used the next marina, they were lovely. Thank you! xx

Hi Mishka! Crick tunnel is renowned for being very drippy, but as we’ve had so much rain recently, it was as you said ridiculously wet lol! And the water is freezing in there! It was so lovely of Mike to run and catch us up, so nice to meet him! Take care! xx

Hi Malcolm, we do love this life, apart from the canals themselves, the views and the ever changing landscapes, we’ve met some wonderful people too and have so many friends on the water. Thanks Malcolm! xx
Ah Watford, coincidentially my Great Great Grandfather Charles Mayes CE emigrated from Watford to Australia in 1849, so it's nice to see some of the old country he came from. "CE" stands for Civi Engineer BTW. He worked for Stephenson's Railways before emegrating.
Oh wow Jen, I bet you have some wonderful stories from his time. As you know, the railways took over from the canals for delivering goods much faster, you’ll notice that the railways often run alongside, or near to the canals. So pleased you are enjoying our videos, lovely to have you along! Thank you Ken xx
The marina were fab last year when we had a problem with our rudder. Very sadly, it’s too shallow for our deep boat, as we loved it there.
Hi Dawn, yes they are a lovely marina, so helpful and welcoming, that’s a shame you couldn’t stay there. Thank you! xx

After I'd left school ( early 90's ) I worked on 2 narrow boats one had the motor the other which I was usually stirring was the butty ( not sure if that's the correct spelling ), which were both done up for about 10 guests and 4 crew
It was basically a floating sorta holiday hotel, people either came for just the weekend or a week or two, we started up in the NW and followed the canals down to Oxford and got onto to the Oxford river, I can't remember how far down south they got but they got so far and turn around, but I didn't make it that far as the owners of the narrow boats 2 of the crew, were not very nice people and were quite aggressive to my friend and myself ( the other 2 crew ) as I said I was only 17 and she was only 19 ( i think, about that )
I loved living on the narrow boats, I loved waking up at like 6 ish in the morning to see the mist hang low over the canal and that and all wildlife I used to see, you'd have knigfisher's following the barge's through their patch's to go after all the little fish the barges had stirred up, and I loved sitting in front of the wood burning stove on a chilly evening as I sat and crocheted or read my books, it really was a fantastic way to live and I would have stayed that full term and probably looked for other barge/narrow boat jobs, had the owners that were also crew not been so nasty and bad tempered
I must say I'm so jealous of the way you live and of your beautiful narrow barge ❤
Mind you it's hardly surprising I love that way of life, it's cause it's mainly traveling through and staying in the countryside and I grew up in a tiny village more or less in the middle of nowhere
Maybe if I still lived in the middle of nowhere I'd be able to leave my house/home, but I now live in a horrid smelly city were people just aren't nice to each other like they are in smaller towns and villages
Anyway it's a fantastic way to live and I'd give almost anything to be able to live that way again
Thank you for sharing your amazing lifestyle and beautiful home ❤❤
Hi Ginnie, lovely that you got to experience the canals, but such a shame it was only short lived. Perhaps one day you can try it again. Really glad you’re enjoying our videos. Thanks Ginnie xx
Love the toads!
Lol, they were funny and so loud! Typically every time we put the camera on, they went quiet 🤣 Thanks Beverley! xx
You would think by now someone would create a mini towns to shop and get repairs or other things you might have broken. What happens if you get engine problems,do you have a recovey tel number to call for help? Do you ever use a radio to listen to?
Hi Les, yes we have RCR (River & Canal Rescue) a bit like the AA or RAC for roads. But mostly, boaters help each other. Thanks! xx
I wonder if all those trees would affect the banks with their root systems. I know the willow trees damage the earth walled dams here in Australia so many are removed. They aren’t native anyway.
Hi Chris, yes you may be right, they were very close to the water’s edge, it’s such a shame to see trees taken down though. There has been so many trees lost naturally this year due to the high winds and so much rain too! Thank you Chris! xx
Idk anything about narrow boats here in the US but this looks like paradise to me
Oh Charles, we do love it, living on the water, being close to nature. Thank you! xx
Ok, I've asked about the Spitfire but, what is up with the black ant on top of the boat? lol.
Just a couple of side thoughts.... I love the inside of your boat. The beautiful wood, the colors... Very elegant. And the outside is just as nice, always clean and well kept. Also, love the way you guys laugh and smile with each other so much. I've learned that it really helps make life together so much more enjoyable and fun and keeps the relationship young and strong.
Thanks for another fun and enjoyable video. Take care!
Hi Roger! The ant was something between Martin and his cousin from when they were little. They used to watch Tom & Jerry together and there was a funny episode with ants, they always joke about it, even to this day, so when his cousin saw it, she bought it for Martin and he’s decided to put it on the boat lol 😂 So pleased you’re enjoying our videos, we do have a giggle, thanks Roger! xx

Hi Julie and Martin - another great vlog. When you were doing the locks, you said, 'red before white and you'll be alright,' What would happen if you did it the other way round? Hope it would not mean dead.
Hiya! The saying goes ‘red before white and you’ll be alright, white before red and you’ll wind up dead’ But realistically if you get them the wrong way round, it causes the locks to flood, which could be one quite dangerous! Thanks Alan xx
I should think that dripping tunnel needs maintenance? Love your big ant😊
Hi Donna, most of the tunnels are drippy, they have natural drainage from the earth above, but we have had so so much rain recently, that it felt like it was raining lol. 😂 Thanks Donna xx
It has now been discovered that narrow boating the UKs canal system is the major contributing cause of crows feet wrinkles. Sufferers are told to not smile so much.
Oh dear Mark, we’re doomed, it’s impossible not to!! 😃🤣 Thanks Mark ….. that made us ‘smile’ 🤪 xx
Hi there “ cruisers “ I’m from southern Victoria, Australia🇦🇺 and the closest thing we have got to your canals, is the mighty Murray River that is just over 2,500 kilometres long, which is the state border for Victoria and New South Wales and a very short distance for Victoria and South Australia near Macabe Corner. Just out of interest, on a typical day of cruising on the canals, about how much diesel would you use?? I very much enjoyed your video, thank you.
Hi David, that mighty river sounds lovely! Going at 2-4mph, we use on average one litre of diesel per hour. Thank you so much, it’s lovely having you along! xx
you have a lovely canal boat.

Hi Susan! Thank you so much, so lovely to have you onboard! With regards to the tunnel, we’ve had a lot of rain recently and there’s a lot of rocks, earth and vegetation above, so it is just natural drainage. Some tunnels are leakier than others, this one wasn’t too bad. Crick tunnel is very leaky, it feels like it’s raining inside, but it is literally the land above draining down through the crevices. lol re Martin’s soggy bottom 😂 and we were so chuffed to have Mike run up to say hi! What a nice channel you have. How nice to be able to boat on the canals, you get to see alot of countryside. Does your Boat just follow the current or do you also have a motor?
Hi Lora, thank you for your kind words! Our boat has a big Beta 43 diesel engine, there’s not generally a current on canals, it’s not like rivers where they have a flow. Thanks Lora! xx
Beautiful, beautiful. I live in Ottawa, Canada. You are living my dream, I would love to live aboard a boat and will now live vicariously through you! My step sister and husband have a sailboat and are planning to sail to Florida, leaving in the fall. I spent a few days with them sailing out of Kingston Ontario along Lake Ontario into the St. Lawrence. I cannot find the words to describe being on the water, day and night finding lovely marinas to dock in, then travel on, when you feel like it. Your countryside is beautiful as well as your boat. You both have that relaxed way about you and we can feel it through your video. I'm a new subscriber and I'm hooked. Sorry for the long-winded comment. How old are those tunnels?
Hello! So lovely to have you onboard! We really do love living on the water and you’re right, the English countryside is beautiful. Most of the tunnels are over 200 years old, it’s amazing to think they were all constructed with manual labour! Thank you so much! xx

You should help toads out of the canal as they will drown as the cannot get out of steep sided places
Hi Keith, there are lots of places along the canal with little tile platforms for that very purpose and the toads use the boats too too. Thanks Keith! xx
Thanks
Aww thank you so much! xx 😘
Towpath. I only know one but maybe other towns have them along the waterways.
Hi Gertrude, yes all canals have a towpath, as before boats had engines they were towed by horses along them. Thank you so much! xx
How fast are you cruising if he had to ruuuuuuun, maybe im too used to steering a butty towed by a very old motor with a very very old engine LOL! Nice of him to come and say Hi!
Hi Emma, we were only going approximately 3mph, but he saw us go past and had to finish a phone call before deciding to come after us, so we had about half a mile plus head start on him. It was so lovely of him to come and say hi, it ready really made our day! Wow, we’re always amazed at the skills of a boat towing a butty boat, we only have to steer the one boat lol 😂 Thanks Emma! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB You go like the clappers compared to the wooden boat pair I worked with. Lilith (the butty) was a 'joey' built in 1901, both ends are 'pointy' so instead of winding them you could just take the tiller and rudder off and pop it on the other end! 71ft and some change. To steer takes some muscle (huge wooden rudder) and you have to be watching what the person driving the motor does... and they are approx 75/80ft ahead of you! Liliths motor was usually Forget-Me-Knot, former horse drawn, 1927 built wooden boat, now motor, also 71ft! So you have to really be watching where the front of the motor is going.. then calculate for whats going to happen over 140ft away about 5 minutes later, it's a VERY different beast indeed. Both still 'live' outside the museum in Ashton-under-Lyne if you're ever that way!
@@emmajudson5945 oh wow! They sound wonderful! That must have been quite hard work and you will have needed your wits about you! We’ll definitely look out for them when we’re that way! Thanks Emma! xx
@JulieandMartinonRIB happy to boat-geek any time, particularly about happy memories. I'm a wheelchair user now so boat's are something I remember fondly, love seeing the canal through your videos!
Have you been there earlier ? How, are you doing the same piece of waterways all the time ? I thought you could get all around England
Yes, we have done this stretch before, but sometimes you have to go over familiar ground to get to another place, similar to roads. We are going to the Crick Boat Show at the end of this month, so we need to be around this area for a while, after that we will be going North. Thanks! xx
Have to ask. Is the background music you play Heidi's? Good choice for your cruising scenes. Nice match. As always be well.
Hi Peter, no it’s not Heidi’s music, but we’ll take that as a compliment, as we love her music! So glad you enjoyed it! Thank you! xx
Leave them alone you've got a bargepole they want a tadpole 😅
😂😂😂 that made us chuckle 🤭 Thanks Ben xx
Have you ever come across a boat called appolo I used to work on it years ago must be at least 50 odd years zinc I last seen it
Hi Gary, we haven’t as yet, but we’ll look out for it! Thanks Gary! xx
Can I ask a question about right of way, Before you entered the 1400m tunnel how do you know there's not a boat coming the other way, you can tell from the question I know nothing about Narrow Boating but it does look to be a nice life.
Hi John, with this particular tunnel, it is a two-way tunnel, s no need to wait. Boats can pass, it is quite snug, but you just slow down and pass each other slowly. When there is a tunnel that is one way, single file, then they usually have a timed passage, ie boss travelling south go on the hour and boats travelling north go on the half hour, or depending on the length of the tunnel some are manned with CRT volunteers. Hope that makes sense! Thanks John, lovely to have you with us! xx
Good dy Julie & Martin. I have just come across your UA-cam channel. Great content. I have watched Ep 90 & 91. At first my attention was drawn to the lovely camera work. It was up there with the best. What camera or cell phone do you use? I especially liked the map you showed & the details of where you are & where you are going. I am able to follow you by Googling the maps of the areas you travel, thank you. I have subscribed & will be following your trips. Travel safely. Granddad Dave Johannesburg South Africa.
Hi Dave, so lovely to have you onboard! Thank you for your lovely compliments, the nap is a relatively new feature that I taught myself, so glad you like it. I use my old iPhone 11 Pro Max to film with and edit using iMovie on my iPad, I know it’s not a special camera, but we’re happy with the quality for now. Thank you so much! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Thanks for that information. I am very impressed by the clarity of your Iphones clip. Have a great day.
Cannot believe its Thursday again it goes so quickly I think there only one day a week Thursday and Thursday great vlog again although Martin was a bad boy he did not blow his horn going into crick tunnel but let him off as he did it later on glad you got pump out and diesel right got a question I had to watch video twice to member my question red before white you be all right white before red you be dead and so would everyone in five miles my question is there not a single vlog off anyone doing the full thing to show when you do red one how soon do you do white one could you do a vlog on this thanks I love the ant on front off your boat looked fab you must feel like film stars when you get chased down tow path to chat last off did not think you are that old Julie to be strapped up to do locks lol have great week stay safe and watch out for humping frogs what a way to go if boat crushed them xx
Hi Nicholas! We did a vlog about the red and white paddles at Foxton and I did an animated diagram explaining how they work, here’s the link ua-cam.com/video/8VvnfCSyjiI/v-deo.htmlsi=iFLOMG9JHSGqLkTv
We love it when people say hi, it was so nice of him to run after us. Lol re the toads! 😂 Thanks Nicholas! xx
March 19th Happy Birthday To Me LOL!
Aww Gappy Birthday! 😃 xx
How do you know that it is safe to pass through a tunnel like that? Is there way to be sure that there isn't another boat coming through in the other direction at the same time?
Hiya! Thank you for your comment. If the tunnel is a two-way tunnel like this one, then you know you can pass another boat. In previous videos you will see us passing other boats, we will be going back through this tunnel soon, so if we pass a boat, or boats, then I’ll make sure I film it so you can see. It is quite close, just inches either side, but so long as you go slowly, then it is fine. Sometimes you can see through the tunnel and if there’s a boat coming, you can choose to wait until they are out, but as soon as you’re in the tunnel, another boat can come in at any time. On single tunnels, one-way, then they usually have timed passage, so that you know there won’t be a boat coming. Hope this makes sense! Thanks! xx
seem to be speeding more than other narrowboats around the 22 min mark.
Thank you, it may be camera angle, or an optical illusion, as you can see there’s no wake behind the boat and we never go more than 2-4mph. Thanks! xx
Your both so lovely
Aww thank you so much Ginnie xx
What happens if you don't have a wrench with you to turn the lock nobs?
Hi there, if you are going to go through locks you will need a windlass, there is no other way of operating them without one. You can get them at all chandlery outlets. Hope that helps! Thank you! xx
So, I hope I misheard, but I think I heard Julie say "So I've got to get my windlass, and get my strap on"... Hope you're OK Martin 🤪
Lol 😂 You heard correct! But don’t worry, Martin was perfectly safe, it’s my windlass-strap! 😜😂🤣 Thank you! xx
I notice the hats but what happens if you get a gust of wind and no chin straps being used.
Hi Les, we have to keep our wits about us if it’s windy! There was one time when Martin’s hat did blow off into the canal, but luckily he managed to retrieve it! Thanks Les! xx
not sure if helpful on market now super power torches and lamps with attachments to fit on vehicles boats etc .... not expensive even rechargable ------- best check reviews some long tunnels can be tricky ... also good deterrent at night ... safety security etc ..if suspicious etc ... //// similar in sailing boats at night on a rocky beach .... // nice video sweet ..... used to live nr rickmansworth canal junction not canal boats dinghies on coast --- and trained artist so often used to sit and watch the canal boats .go past .....
Ooh thank you Tony, we’ll look out for them, thank you! xx
Bit of a personal comment. But may I ask how big your black water tank is and how often you have to pump it out?
I wanted to get an idea of monthly costs.
Hi Derek, that’s not too personal, wondered what you were going to ask then! Lol 😂 Our black water tank is 347 litres and lasts us approx 3 - 4 weeks, so roughly one a month, if you budget for 15 in a year, that should do it 👍Thanks Derek! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Thank you both.
I've being doing some costings and would rather have pump out than emptying cassettes.
You've been very helpful.
Loving your vlogs.
@@dereksmith6126 aww thank you, yes, we prefer the pumpout 👍 xx
Is that Crick proximal to the Crick Inst.? the genetics research center.
Hi Tim, no, this Crick is in Northampton, whereas the Francis Crick Institute is in London near Kings Cross. Thank you! xx
Is there a river above Crick tunnel?
Hi Greg, lol, there may as well be 😂😂 It’s just natural drainage through the earth. We had had similar much rain, we knew it would be wet in there! Thanks Greg! xx
Like your hat very nice what kind or make is you hat please as I love hats😊
Hi Donna, thank you, I bought the hat at the Crick boat show a couple of years ago. Not sure what kind it is, but the make is Eureka Stockade, hope that helps. Thanks Donna! xx
