I've been a sailor for over 30 years and have never forgotten the words of my first instructor: "Never drive faster towards a structure than you're prepared to hit it." Words of wisdom that have saved my bacon several times but on a fast-flowing river, not always possible. We all learn from experience and remember, there are only two kinds of boaters: those that have run aground and those that lie about it.
You have our sympathies guys and congratulations for not panicking! We have ended up across the river twice this year due to the strong flow and both times kind people helped save the day! Don't beat yourself up Chris. This kind of thing can happen to anyone when the unexpected happens and I have been boating close to 60 years now. Ropes sticks and muscle can get you out of most sticky situations. No one hurt and so long as you learn from the accident, your skills will improve.
the support from people really blows our minds, they just love to help, I really felt in control until the last few seconds so it has thrown my confidence a tad, but im sure there will be many more, as you must know...these things are build very strong and tend to travel vey slow, were safe and thats the main thing, good luck on.your journey
Chris that wasn’t necessarily your fault there were a few contributing factors involved so don’t get disheartened and go beating yourself up, I’ve watched heaps of narrowboat vlogs and you’re not the first to do this. The bright side is you made new friends and reality is there isn’t as much damage as there could have been, you have also learnt that people on the canal really care about each other. Honestly my heart goes out to you both. Beccs you seemed to keep your cool through the whole incident but your heart must have been racing. I guess we’ll have to wait to see the exact outcome of the damage, just hope it’s superficial. Thinking of you guys. 💕
@@TheNomadicCrobot Downstream bridge navigation should be a major and early chapter in inland seamanship books so that people won't have to learn the had way, though this video should help. Videos that help others learn from your mistakes are among the best, so hopefully this one can end up paying for the damage. The same goes for towing, since the pilot of that cruiser could learn a few things about maintaining steerage during tows. As you can see twice over, slow speeds don't solve everything is strong currents or winds, though if they are really strong, one might achieve forward motion while maintaining steerage way in reverse. You can also see why bow thrusters are worthwhile for many. Getting pinned against a bridge can be even worse for sailboats.
@@alan6832 I agree, that cruiser driver needed some advice. should have also had lines attached to both sides of the boat, pulling from one side is difficult. I guess their first time at towing, I hate it, it's not easy.
Well done for showing us that this happened. I've watched endless narrowboat commentaries and you'd think it was all moonlight and roses. And how heartening to see that people were so empathetic and helpful. Life's a long lesson and we all have lessons still to learn. Thank goodness you didn't suffer any personal injury and have lived to tell the tale and chalk it all up to experience.
Thanks for enjoying, we like to try and show the life exactly how it is really, alot of time people think its all fun and games but it can be very hard, especially for two beginners that are learning. luckily were both fine...and we will learn from it to, have a lovely week
Hey Guys, don’t let crash put you off. This is how you learn, when going with the flow on a river, slowing down is the worst thing you can do, as you lose steering. If you had kept a bit more power on the back end probably wouldn’t have started to twist. At least no one was hurt, any thing else can be fixed. Keep up the good work with the channel, I always looked forward to your videos. Chin up guys 👍
yes someone else said that, now looking back it seams that part of the bridge was missing its bollard so made things extra tricky, were actually just having a week off but are eager to get going again, thanks for comment James
It was a real wake up call to see how dangerous boating can be. It was good of you both to show the reality of how difficult if can be. Glad you are both safe and chalk it up to experience guys. Live and learn and keep going xx
what a shock, and came from out of nowhere, it rally could have gotten quite dangerous but thankfully we made it out and back home thanks for your comment
When you slow down approaching the bridge you lose steering, you need to keep the power on to allow you to steer. Counter intuitive but you need water flowing over the rudder to be able to steer. Well recovered don’t worry next time go for it, approach slowly then gun it to keep the boat lined up. 😊
I run aground on a massive houseboat in Australia and found manoeuvring weight in the boat and using some human power jumping on the appropriate end … then lots of left right on the wheel and up and down on the power got us off after a few hours trying after an overnight stuck! The jubilation when you are freed 🙌🙏
oh woaw thats amazing, these things to tend to get stuck at the worst moments, normally its corrected quite quickly, all part of the adventure I suppose 😂😂
had to laugh when you blamed the current & the wind lol Its like a mill pond with no breeze whatsoever. The movement of the trees give that away. Yes thats right, what movement? I am sitting on my 45' boat at 2.45am watching this. Must admit I am enjoying it. Cant wait to see what will happen next. Its very entertaining but I am not laughing at the damage. That will cost time and money to sort
Many factors at play james, there was infact a very fast current ..well for a amateur narrowboater like my self anyway, Also my inexperience of getting a large 60foot boat through a small bridge enterence on a bend that was missing its bumper. 3 other boats that afternoon had hit it too...so I can only imagine how many boats collide with it daily over the years, mine was by far the worst but again that's my inexperience. We were told after most boaters in the area us the exit as an entrance as its an easier pass through. We live and learn I'm sure it won't be the last, hope your having a fun adventure on your narrowboat
Exactly my thoughts…. The river is perfectly flat, calm and looks steady. He’s probably embarrassed and that’s why he tried to say that it was the current etc. people who don’t live or own a canal boat will fall for his tale, but people who live on a boat will rumble his excuse straight away. I’ve lived on my 57X10 widebeam for the last 3 years and I love it, I’d rather die than live in a house again. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done. I’m 42 now so hopefully I’ve still got a few more years cruising yet!!
This is actually a very good video....All be it, a caution to other boaters. There is a saying "Horses for courses" and this demonstrates that Narrow Boats are designed for canals and not fast flowing rivers. You were very lucky to escape as you did. Persistence is the rule of the day, and quite honestly the language was very subdued considering the situation!! Everything in life is a learning curve, so please do not be discouraged, you have just learned something, with trauma or whatever else. Hope your adventures go a little smoother in future and good luck to you both. God bless your boat!! John
Thank you so much John for such a lovely message. You are absolutely right, as tricky as things were in the moment, there is always the opportunity to learn from these mistakes and ultimately it makes you a bit wiser for the next time! I'm glad you noticed our clean tongues during the stress!! 😂😂 Thanks so much and thanks for watching ☺️
Gutted for you both. Been watching you now for almost as long as your channel has been going. Remember that no one was hurt and it’s only stuff. It can all be fixed x
Well if nothing else Crobot channel is not boring! But the drama! I could cry for the pair of you. All the hard work you’ve put in😢. Thank goodness you’re both safe. ❤️❤️
“Welcome to the boat the James DIDNT build 😅 When I get back from the USA, there will be a coffee or three on their way. Love the content and humour. One observation, if the tiller is 90 Deg to the stern, you won’t steer anywhere, as the water is hitting the rudder straight on. Tie up, have a kiss and cuddle, and any damage is repairable. You are both safe at the end of the day. The Old Brdige can be repaired 😅
its funny someone else mentioned this, were still learning a lot clearly so thank you for the advice, it makes sense, you are too kind haha and that bloody bridge can do one, thanks for enjoying the video
Just remember for future the back end of the boat when steering moves first so having the tiller facing the bridge when you were side on is pushing the back end up against the bridge even more. Hope that helps. If you think that flow is pretty strong the Nene is a total different level most of the time. 👍🏼
yes someone else said this, I think were it swung round and got stuck I decided to try and bring the boat out right but it just made things worse, what a nightmare, but we learn, yes weve been on far worse really but not come across a bridge that tight I suppose
Canals are totally different, don’t let this put you off Chris you’ll be fine when you both get on the canals. I defy you not to be able to de-stress on a canal 😎👍🏼
Oh my goodness…thank goodness you are both safe and the boat. I wanted to reach into the screen and hug you Chris. You need to believe in yourself, no one could have managed through there safely. Please focus forward and don’t worry about things. You will solve whatever comes your way. ❤
Thank you Ann thats so sweet, its all learning, I think I may have got over confident at the wrong time, next time ill, be approaching with a tad more caution thanks for your lovely words
Current can be scary and unpredictable so don't beat yourself up too bad. It takes years to learn all the tips and tricks and you're just getting started. If nothing else, you learned a few things and wisdom is priceless. ❤
Mate, we had EXACTLY the same thing happen to us yesterday on the Thames and we missed the bridge by a whisker. We watched this and really felt for you. You are not alone, it happens to the best of us. Keep your chin up.
oh really, I have since been told a lot of problems happen at this bridge, I did make it through successfully last time...though I can still remember a small prang, well done making it through ene...its just one of those unlucky things, next time Bex is driving
Helmed narrowboats many times over the years and can confirm that it’s a really heartsinking moment when the wind takes your boat in a different direction to where you want to go. You handled it well and can put it down to experience.
Thanks Alex it's quite scary, I felt in control until about 5 seconds at the bridge, I'm sure with a bit more experience I would have maybe taken the bridge at an angle
Damage could have been worse. Pride and confidence may be tarnished but a valuable lesson learned and also maybe a few friends gained. As a bonus we now have another 10 videos of repairing the damage and touching up the paint.
I’m by no means a boater but we do hire canal boats 4 times a year, I would say, you did very well, so many people struggle and get stuck, just most of the time it’s in a nice relaxing location on a canal. You guys were just unlucky at the location, it’s also much more tricky on a river so you guys will be absolutely fine! You kept calm and that’s the main thing! The only thing I would say, and this is obviously just how it looked in the video and I could be completely wrong! Is to remember they turn from the middle but steer from the back, so when you had the tiller pointing at the bridge and also trying to push away from the back with your bargepole you were fighting each other. Anyway, keep going, you guys have got this! Such a fun Channel, don’t forget how much you make people smile, you effect and help a lot of people that you have never met and that is a very powerful thing.
Thanks for your lovely comment Ryan, I think there were alot of factors at play looking back, weve never really had any problems using the rivers in the 2 years having the boat, and have been on far far rougher water, I think maybe being a bit over confidence on my behalf at a bridge on a bend along with a fast current were the main issues. quite a few people have come out and said how alot of people struggle with this bridge and that you should really use the exit instead of the entrance , so the bridge is renowned for being tricky, and it was also missing its number on that side too, so that explains why so many boaters end up hating the bridge, yes I think once we got stuck it was. a loosing battle thanks for your suggestions your absolutely right, on wards and upwards, we won't let it beat us, thanks again
Been following from “across the pond” in Newfoundland. Great to see you guy’s learning about all aspects of narrow boating. Looking forward to seeing more cruising videos after all your hard work getting it ready. Your experience in this video will certainly make you better boaters , glad there were no injuries or really serious damage . Certainly our favourite UA-cam channel Thanks for all the videos !
Hi from the UK, Thank you for your lovely comment, its a huge learning curve and new way of life so it will come with its moments of madness, hopefully we can show what narrowboat life can really be like for a newbie, have a great week
What a smelly little bridge!! Looked like a proper tricky one. You BOTH handled that so well, well done 👏🏻 that must’ve been really scary, but try not to let it knock your confidence. Get back out there as soon as you can for a lil cruise to build it back up ❤ Excited to see you out there!
What a horrible little bridge 😂 thanks Amy and Wes what a sticky situation, at least it didn't get to the point we had to pay for the ra to come, take care see you soon
Nice one Never a dull moment on the crobot now moved on to demolishing bridges. That’s mental getting stuck like that I reckon its the footing of the bridge that you got stuck on they need to make it wider Especially after someone got killed there brilliant vid have a top week 🙂🔧🎸✌️
Thanks Lee, turns out there no number at that part of the bridge too, I think if there was we would have just knocked it a tad. what a slimming nightmare...but no-one got hurt thats the main thing
Glad to see your both OK after your cruise. It is so difficult to steer with currents and wind. We felt so sorry for you. Keep bouncing back as I think it will be worth it! Roger & Jason x
I felt for you watching that having been in a few stressful boat scenarios myself. But you kept calm, got home and nobody got hurt, that's all that matters.
You both did extremely Well under the circumstances and I really sympathise, it is also great to see your helpers. Well done to both of you in not panicking and I hope the damage to the boat is not too bad
I think it's fair to say, everyone who follows you both, our hearts go out to you. The main thing is that neither of you were hurt, and the boat can be repaired. It would be easy to say these little problems don't come along, but that is not true. I have a boat on the Norfolk Broads, and it can be very tidal, with wind being another factor, and before you know it, it's out of control, it has happened to me, i am still learning, but i will not give up. Do not let this incident put you off, you are both such a lovely couple, keep smiling, and get that boat finished and get out there ! Buy me a coffee on the way to help.
thats exactly what Bex said, we got back safe, and these little mishaps will happen along the way, no we won't give up ether...its all part of the boaty adventure, at times very frustrating ...but part of the package, thank you so much Simon thats so kind of you, have. a great week and good luck with your own travels
Feel so bad for you both. Thankfully neither of you were hurt! The Wombat can be fixed. Try to destress and enjoy rest of your trip back to the marina. Best wishes, Deb
You have to remember that there is much more control when your boat is traveling faster through the water. To get the correct control on such a relatively fast flowing river, you must keep your speed high relative to the water. This might seem faster than you you might feel is comfortable if you look to the bank. It was disaster waiting to happen when you decided to go slowly, you were simply drifting with the river rather that cruising through it. Lesson learned I hope and no serious damage 🙏🙏🙏🙏
we have been told this, quite scary to think I should have sped up but it all comes with experience which I havent had a great deal off...iv taken alot from this disaster though Roger..sometimes it can be good because we come back stronger with more knowledge. thanks for your comment
Good grief, that bridge is a menace! Chris you did the best you could in a very scary situation. I’m glad you both are unharmed. I thought for sure there would be a for sale sign . I’m glad there isn’t. You made new friends, how great is that😊❤.
it really is, and quite a few people have come out and said its a regular thing for boats to go in to, what lovely locals to come and help, I feel there should have been a bit of a warning really as the bridge was missing its bumper
We really felt for you when watching this. What an awful time you had and a horrible situation. You both kept so calm. Think I would have been swearing and shouting. You both handled the situation so well. What a scary time and that story of the boat a few years ago and the head getting caught....you've put me off ever going under that bridge.😮
thanks for that, it was very stressful but we managed to overcome come, rivers can be very scary...and it didnt even look to bad until it happened, the thing with this bridge was that its actually missing its bumper....so no wonder we went into it, what a nightmare trip haha
@The Nomadic Crobot I just hope you have a bit of good luck coming your way after all your DIY, leaks and problems and now this. Hope you manage to get your canopy fixed
its a tricky one, maybe I was to blame to for part of it, maybe I wasn't prepared enough, at least next time ill be approaching with caution thanks you Sheila
Have just enjoyed your very lively and busy video..what a week you have had ! I am very envious of my sister who was the lady you personally delivered the bag and pens to and... they also met you at Crick on Saturday . I can't wait to see the rest of your weekend next Sunday. Good luck 🍀
Thanks for sharing a less glamorous side of boating, you handled this really well, think I’d have run off into the sunset screaming - but it’s made me aware there are dangers I haven’t yet encountered !!
I have so much respect for solo boaters...must be so trick especially when things like this happen. luckily we made it out alive....why dont I think this will be the last time cheers guys
Thank you for showing wart and all, as my dad would say" The man who never made a mistake didn't do anything". Don't put yourself down, put it down to experience and soldier on.
Yeah, a gnarly situation. when you did go through I noticed you were tillered into the bridge, if you want to avoid hitting something with the back end, push the tiller away from the thing you don't want to hit. if you had tillered away you'd have made it through without hitting anything. it does look like a tough obstacle tho, the sort of thing you'd figure out with time. keep going, you're learning every step of the way.
Thanks for this, Iv been looming back at the footage to try and work out we're I went wrong, such a touch bridge with a 60 foot boat , hopefully I can learn from it
@@TheNomadicCrobot when you turn the tiller, you're moving the back of the boat. so if you want to move the back of the boat to the right, it's rudder to the left (tiller to the right) and some power to get water flow over the rudder
Great learning curve, nobody hurt, live to fight another day. It may just have been the editing, but there was a point early on where it looked like you were steering as if driving a car, so tiller hard to port to keep the bow towards the arch, but that started the stern moving to port towards the bridge and bank, and once the current caught it you never had chance to recover with the flow pushing your stern into the bridge and a lack of steerage as you slowed down and were just carried with the current. Very narrow! And on a bend. Challenging. Thanks for sharing. Seeing these dramas unfold really helps other people think things through.
it really is all about learning, I had about 5 seconds to correct what was going wrong and with lack of experience probably made things even worse, a tight corner with a heavy river flow, and 5 other boats went into the bridge too while we were there...it seams to have a bit of a name for it. im sure with a bit more experience it would have worked out alot better for us, thanks for your comment
You both handled that with aplomb. Kudos to you both. No harm, No foul. Lessons learned. Never be disheartened by setbacks...They are just a learning tool.🔫. You've got this guys.
Thank you Sandra, its all learning and this one goes straight on the CV, looking back were just happy noone was injured, now to get her back and patched up
Welcome to the Barford bridge club! If/when you try to navigate this bridge again always go downstream through the upstream arch! We had a boat on the Great Ouse for 20+ years so know this navigation hazard well
thanks for this, another person has just said the same thing, im sure we clipped it last time but nothing like this ..what a nightmare, also the fact that that arch is missing its bumper at that area probably plays a big part
When you consider what your boat weighs, the downstream current pushing continuously, once you're on an obstruction it's very difficult to get off. We had similar on the Macclesfield canal at Bosley Locks. Just as we were lining up to enter lock 12 and go under bridge 56a, we managed to run aground on a shelf that is normally higher in the water. The heavy rains had increased the draught above the shelf allowing the boat to lay on about midway between the bow and stern. tried pushing but there was extra water and the current pushed back. In the end, lots of alternating between forward and reverse combined with tiller waggling, we got off.
sorry to hear that, it can be quite a scary situation, and goes to show how quickly things can go wrong...especially for someone inexperienced, most people will probably have there fair share of little problems when cruising ...this was out little disaster 😂😂 Thankfully you got off so well done
Sorry to see this guys. Amazing how fast things can go wrong on a boat. Take the positives, you didn't get hurt and learnt a lot about currents, narrow bridges etc. Safe cruising guys.
Oh dear! It at times like this that the cut community really shows from the bright side! Glad you made it, maybe a little bit shaky but still with your good temper!
Strong currents at the moment and you are not the only ones to get proper stuck . Holly The Cafe Boat was truly grounded and needed CRT to come and get them free, even they nearly tipped the boat over. EWater levels seem to be low, despite strong stream advisories an so much rain . It happens to the best.
oh woaw in our area the currents have been really strong, they only just opened the river up a few weeks ago, maybe we should have held out...saying that its looking worse than ever at the moment, a strong reminder to be careful , we were so close to having to call the CRT thankfully we had fay and Michael
the best captains are always on shore sitting on their sofas, thanks for sharing this rather painful (can feel for your boat) experience , that we can all learn from it
Your not wrong, until your in this sort of situation it's hard to know how you would handle it we just try to show everyone alp the parts of narrowboat life and that unfortunately also includes the downs, take care we live and learn
And I thought y’all cruising the waterways would be boring. I was wrong. It hurt me just watching it!!! 😢 I’m so sorry this happened to you but please don’t let it get you down.
You poor guys! You made me laugh , go eek, cry and my heart goes out to you both. Bex was so calm bless her. Don’t let it defeat you both. There will be brighter days ahead. Stay positive . Lots of love to both xxx
You did really well. I would have completely had a major stress out. You two work together well. You were brave sharing the video. Honestly, keep on going. The canals are wonderful. You have a great week too. xxx
thanks for that, I think we were both a bit shocked and didnt really know what to do, luckily help came and we were saved yayyyy next stop the canals...please
Trouble is when you give the engine loads you're drawing water from under the boat. to go too fast is always bad with boats cos you ain't got brakes and a boat steers from the rear.
@The Nomadic Crobot Without taking the piss, in all fairness, you came into this with no skills, knowledge, or experience. So, to get as far as you have is quite an achievement. Don't let that comment go to your head, cos you know what will happen.
Rivers are always more difficult than canals. Going downstream is always worse than going upstream as you will inevitably be moving faster over the ground. Looking at any bridge you will always see battle scars from many many previous boaters who got it wrong too. Did notice that you were trying to turn away from the bridge by pushing the tiller to your left when in fact it was the rear of the boat that you needed to clear, but that's an instinct you will get right with practice. Keep your chins up and hope that things get better going forward 😊
Well done for showing it warts and all. Dont worry, the experience will aid you massively. 1st time i ever tried taking our narrowboat out i managed to hit the rudder and pop it out so i had no control whilst been blown into my new neighbours boats by the wind. Another time our engine cut out on the canal and therefore we hsd no way of stopping 😮 its all part of the fun, put it down to experience and move on 😊
Thanks, were sure it won't be the last time something like this happened, all party of the boaty adventure,im not going to lie...im terrified of tackling another bridge...but ill be bk...ether that or get Bex to take over...oh woaw goes to show everyone runs into problems at times
@@TheNomadicCrobot I still literally poo myself everytime I take the boat out the marina but once on the cut then I relax again. Too much wind in the marina. We've never been.on a river, don't know if I would be brave enough lol. Anyway, don't ever change, either of you. We are loving watching and sharing your adventures
😢 Bless your hearts. Many thoughts coming your way. We travel a lot in our RV and can sympathize. We have had days when all we have felt like doing is cry
it came out of nowhere ...what a shock...but goes to show that anything can go wrong at any minute really, I feel we were unlucky and should have maybe waited a few more weeks for the river to calm down thanks Estelle
I really feel for you guys. Experiences make us better and stronger, you will both get over it and be the better for it. The only thing you can do is shrug your shoulders and say after me ‘all part of growing up and being British!’
That wasn't your fault at all Chris. You definitely had the flow pushing you round. Don't worry about it bud and don't let it knock your confidence. This is all a steep learning curve and you're doing awesome. Nobody got hurt and everything can be fixed. Definitely made for great footage mind 😉 even though it churned my stomach. You can always trust a Michael to save the day 😊😊😊
thanks buddy, it came out of nowhere maybe Bex should have stayed on the tiller. at least we got out in the end without having to call the river rescue and yes made for a different video thanks Michael
@The Nomadic Crobot Not having to call in River Rescue is a bonus. Seeing how many lovely people helped you get free, makes me happy that there's still some lovely decent people about. Stay safe you guys 😊
@@TheNomadicCrobot Nonsense, Chris you did awesome, in a situation you weren't sure of. Bex had the experience of seeing what happened the day before. Its all a learning. Definitely don't beat yourself up. The wombat is made of strong stuff, a few scratched won't hurt it! And now you can learn how to wire up new navigation lights! Loving the vlogs keep them up your journey is awesome!
I think this must be one of your best videos, had me in stitches, do you rehearse or dose it come naturally. Think you have see the funny side of it even though it looked dangerous.
Thank you much, no its just who we are so thanks again that means a lot, I did say to be Bex at least the viewer will get an interesting video this week, what a nightmare but we can laugh now
Well done. A no-blame partnership and positive attitude means so, so much in a reslationship, and in life. Add a sense of humour on both sides and you'll be the envy of the world!
Omg how stressful, I hired a narrowboat on the Llangollen canal , it was like bumper cars , really stressful but I still the love the idea of living on a narrowboat even though my experience was negative , rivers though look extra stressful and dangerous
the rivers have been great really, very peaceful, but it does surprise me how you dont need any lessons to buy and drive one, it can be a great wonderful life but comes with its chaos cheers chris
Well done guys for how you handled that. Problems occur with anything, it's how you deal with it that counts. Put it down to experience, learn from it and move on. 👌🏼
Phew! I think the best tactic is to approach dead slow then apply plenty of throttle just before turning to enter the arch. It’s water flow over the rudder you need for steering, not raw speed. But what do I know; if I ever owned a boat, I’d avoid any waterway with the word “river” in it for a good few years.
thanks Timothy, yes a few others have said that, weve done it before no problem...but then the flow of the river wasn't as strong, this is the first real problem we've encountered on the river..its normally such a nice peaceful place
So sorry about your accident but at least Rebecca can keep you both smiling. The trouble with a current on a river you need to be going faster than the current to keep steering so it looks like you are going to fast. So glad that you are both 👍
Yes a few people have said that now, it really cought us out, and a few others have come out and said that bridge is a nightmare, we have learnt alot this trio and are coming back stronger 😉
CHRIS ! I think if Becca would of been doing it the same would of happened to her. The boat still floats and you alive that’s all that matters ! Big hugs to you lovely peeps xxxx
Thanks Mandy, there just wasn't much to do once the tide took the boat, luckily noone got hurt,I do feel there should be a warning put up really, a week off...and then back to the choas haha take care x
Chris, my heart broke for you ,with the expressions on your face. Sweetie things happen, it was just a accident not your fault. You and Becs have it, no matter. Lots of love and support from Zip, Hagersville Ontario Canada
Thank you for the support we really do appreciate it, it came as such a shake as I had never had the boat tail out I such a way, its a funny old bridge ill be taking extra precautions next time ie...let Becca drive
I did similar on the Nene 25 years ago. Often, when stuck, rocking the boat while powering (away) from the bridge will work. The boat rocking digs a trench with the sides and the "high spot" then breaks down into the tranches made. You're better off at a low speed when trying to get unstuck as more power moves more water from under your boat hull, so some careful rocking and some gentle revs will do you and the environment less damage. Stay strong guys, you've worked very hard to get where you are. Don't let these little things put you off (unless you want to give me the boat 😂) 😉
thats interesting thanks Gary, I cant help think this is the first of many, we never want these things to happen but sometimes there just out of your control when your on water. thanks for your tips will be using the the next time....and there will be a next time im sure , you can have her haha
@@TheNomadicCrobot excellent, when can I take delivery? 😆 Wouldn't it be great to have that noisy engine replaced with electric? 😂 It's soo easy to get stuck in places. Learn that the boat turns in a middle point, learn that point on the boat (just like you do with the width of you car turning circle). It doesn't take loads to drive a boat. It takes loads to learn to do it safely, carefully and not (too) detrimental to the environment (or listed bridges lol)

the support from people really blows our minds, they just love to help, I really felt in control until the last few seconds so it has thrown my confidence a tad, but im sure there will be many more, as you must know...these things are build very strong and tend to travel vey slow, were safe and thats the main thing, good luck on.your journey
yes a few others have pointed that out, thanks for your tip we will be sure to try them next time
You Guys Rock! this is a proper narrowboat channel ..... nobody died so all's good 🙂
thank you James glad it comes across that way that means a lot
Brings back memories of river life .. never ever will we leave the canals again
please let us join you ...weve actually never had any River problems before...but this shows they can easily happen
@@TheNomadicCrobot get yourself down here guys you won’t regret it
I run aground on a massive houseboat in Australia and found manoeuvring weight in the boat and using some human power jumping on the appropriate end … then lots of left right on the wheel and up and down on the power got us off after a few hours trying after an overnight stuck! The jubilation when you are freed 🙌🙏
oh woaw thats amazing, these things to tend to get stuck at the worst moments, normally its corrected quite quickly, all part of the adventure I suppose 😂😂
had to laugh when you blamed the current & the wind lol
Its like a mill pond with no breeze whatsoever.
I really felt so sorry for you both this episode! Bless your hearts! ❤ You’re both ok and that’s the main thing! 🤗🌻xx
We're safe that's the main thing, a very frustrating trip but Bex got us through the bridge in the end, thanks for all your support and kind words x
This is one of the reasons I watch your channel, you show absolutely everything, the good, the bad and the ugly.
thanks for enjoying and leaving a lovely comment , im glad you feel this way we really want to show the reality off it all, take care
It can all be fixed x
thanks Dean for the support it means a lot
Well if nothing else Crobot channel is not boring! But the drama! I could cry for the pair of you. All the hard work you’ve put in😢. Thank goodness you’re both safe. ❤️❤️
thank you, we made it out alive so thats the main thing, I did say to bex at least we won't have a boring video this week take care
“Welcome to the boat the James DIDNT build 😅
When I get back from the USA, there will be a coffee or three on their way.
Ooooooh, a Charlie impression, now that brings back memories lol😊
its funny someone else mentioned this, were still learning a lot clearly so thank you for the advice, it makes sense, you are too kind haha and that bloody bridge can do one, thanks for enjoying the video
all well that ends well, glad you all are ok
thank you
Just remember for future the back end of the boat when steering moves first so having the tiller facing the bridge when you were side on is pushing the back end up against the bridge even more.
@@TheNomadicCrobot bit of an angle to be fair. That bridge.
it was very unpredictable, it really caught us off guard, weve learnt from it and everyones safe so thats the main thing thanks for your comment Annie
I recon your the most famous narrowboat vloger to date after that episode you're making
History 😎😎😎😭😭😭
haha im not going to be very popular
Damage could have been worse. Pride and confidence may be tarnished but a valuable lesson learned and also maybe a few friends gained. As a bonus we now have another 10 videos of repairing the damage and touching up the paint.
your right, it probably felt worse than it was, these things are like a tank so it would take a lot more, exactly are you ready for my colour match??
@@TheNomadicCrobot well, we will be doing woodland Camo for our boat so we can hide the prangs and rusty bits more easily
What about the damage to the bridge? Idiots
WOW!!!! Becs to the rescue. What a woman! Seriously though I wouldn't have known what to do. Things can only get better from now on. Good luck guys
you'd think so wouldn't you, im putting Bex in charge of everything from now on
Been following from “across the pond” in Newfoundland.
Get back out there as soon as you can for a lil cruise to build it back up ❤
Excited to see you out there!

Thanks for watching, yes it was quite stressful, more practice and im sure I will get there
You both did extremely Well under the circumstances and I really sympathise, it is also great to see your helpers. Well done to both of you in not panicking and I hope the damage to the boat is not too bad

What a nightmare, well at least we got out safely in the end ,thanks Natalie
Bet he's been sleeping on the couch. If not, he should be.
Best wishes, Deb
thats it noone was hurt so what's the main thing, and we got unstuck...thank god we didnt have to get a rescue service out
I feel bad for laughing but that was a classic, glad you made it and hope your rudder is Ok 👍🏻🤞🏻
it was a good old knock...at least no-one was hurt and we got out thank you
You have to remember that there is much more control when your boat is traveling faster through the water.
To get the correct control on such a relatively fast flowing river, you must keep your speed high relative to the water. This might seem faster than you you might feel is comfortable if you look to the bank.
It was disaster waiting to happen when you decided to go slowly, you were simply drifting with the river rather that cruising through it.
Lesson learned I hope and no serious damage
🙏🙏🙏🙏
we have been told this, quite scary to think I should have sped up but it all comes with experience which I havent had a great deal off...iv taken alot from this disaster though Roger..sometimes it can be good because we come back stronger with more knowledge. thanks for your comment
Aw bless you both. The river rules, so no matter what you do sometimes the tide wins. At kat you finally broke free. ❤
its a tricky one, maybe I was to blame to for part of it, maybe I wasn't prepared enough, at least next time ill be approaching with caution thanks you Sheila
No blame, remember you can't control the weather. ❤

Thanks for sharing a less glamorous side of boating, you handled this really well, think I’d have run off into the sunset screaming - but it’s made me aware there are dangers I haven’t yet encountered !!
Thanks it was quite a scary moment, I think I would ha e run off to if we weren't stuck in the middle if rhe river haha
Wow that must’ve been blooming scarey. Can’t imagine it for a solo boater. Well done for persevering.
Thanks David, we are out alive
That bridge needs some big bouncy bollards(triple b's 😘)to guide the boats through!
it really does....especially for me
Great learning curve, nobody hurt, live to fight another day.
Thank you Sandra, its all learning and this one goes straight on the CV, looking back were just happy noone was injured, now to get her back and patched up
We’ve all done it and we’ll do it again don’t beat yourself up too much
Its good you show it how it really is👍
thanks Andy im sure it won't be the last time, lucky these things a re built like a tank
That was god bless all who helped tc now the oldies 👍🤗🤗
we were very touched, so many lovely people
When you consider what your boat weighs, the downstream current pushing continuously, once you're on an obstruction it's very difficult to get off.
Don’t be disheartened Chris! You both were so calm! I would have been screaming!
Thanks for the encouragement, hopefully it's taught us a good lesson. What a nightmare though haha
Sorry to see this guys. Amazing how fast things can go wrong on a boat. Take the positives, you didn't get hurt and learnt a lot about currents, narrow bridges etc. Safe cruising guys.
it really goes to show how quickly things can go wrong, hopefully we can come back stronger thank you Mark
Oh dear! It at times like this that the cut community really shows from the bright side! Glad you made it, maybe a little bit shaky but still with your good temper!
such a wonderful community, one day our time will come to try and help someone out, what a disastrous cruise but we have learnt from it cheers Rolf
Strong currents at the moment and you are not the only ones to get proper stuck . Holly The Cafe Boat was truly grounded and needed CRT to come and get them free, even they nearly tipped the boat over. EWater levels seem to be low, despite strong stream advisories an so much rain . It happens to the best.
oh woaw in our area the currents have been really strong, they only just opened the river up a few weeks ago, maybe we should have held out...saying that its looking worse than ever at the moment, a strong reminder to be careful , we were so close to having to call the CRT thankfully we had fay and Michael

thanks for that, I think we were both a bit shocked and didnt really know what to do, luckily help came and we were saved yayyyy next stop the canals...please
amazed how calm you guys were, brilliant.

Trouble is when you give the engine loads you're drawing water from under the boat. to go too fast is always bad with boats cos you ain't got brakes and a boat steers from the rear.
it was a learning experience thanks Jess

I really feel for you guys. Experiences make us better and stronger, you will both get over it and be the better for it. The only thing you can do is shrug your shoulders and say after me ‘all part of growing up and being British!’
thanks Paul, we got out in the end and no-one got hurt, river flow can be a hard bugger
Omword!! What a nightmare of a bridge!! 😱 so glad you managed free! You did so well!! 🤗🤗🤗
we were so relived to get out, what a blimming nightmare
Thank you Martin I appreciate that 🙏
My heart goes out to you, have a cry and scream 😢
thank you David
I think this must be one of your best videos, had me in stitches, do you rehearse or dose it come naturally. Think you have see the funny side of it even though it looked dangerous.
Thank you much, no its just who we are so thanks again that means a lot, I did say to be Bex at least the viewer will get an interesting video this week, what a nightmare but we can laugh now
Hell. that looked stressful!! Well done you two, you really did a great job! Thanks for the video.....
Thanks Ian, not what i expected Sunday morning 😂
I have sold my tv and just watch crobot 24 7 excellent 👍👍👍
Haha thanks for the support Glyn it mean alot, let's hope we don't sink
Well done. A no-blame partnership and positive attitude means so, so much in a reslationship, and in life. Add a sense of humour on both sides and you'll be the envy of the world!
Thanks, these situations can be very stressful especially when your very new to cruising, we live and learn
Glad you got it free and made it through the bridge
thank you, what a relief
Well done guys for how you handled that. Problems occur with anything, it's how you deal with it that counts. Put it down to experience, learn from it and move on. 👌🏼
thats it Paul, thanks for your support we live and learn
I feel really sorry for you, but please don't let it stop you, fight on and good luck ❤
Thank you David what a nightmare, lucky Bex got us through in the end take care
Like the way you start with I’m sick of DIY. Now you have more. Tell you one thing if I ever get a boat I’m not heading there. Be safe guys.
I know so much for trying to move away from the DIY jobs, thanks Andy
@@TheNomadicCrobot yes it needs a warning and I think something to rectify this kind of thing happening again ! Chins up guys ! Xxx
Oh guys, you gotcaught interested strong stream
Chris, my heart broke for you ,with the expressions on your face. Sweetie things happen, it was just a accident not your fault. You and Becs have it, no matter. Lots of love and support from Zip, Hagersville Ontario Canada
Thank you for the support we really do appreciate it, it came as such a shake as I had never had the boat tail out I such a way, its a funny old bridge ill be taking extra precautions next time ie...let Becca drive
Plus you rock a beached boat cumon
Aw guys really do feel for you both so glad you got free. Hope everything idol and not to damaged take care 🥰
Thank you Caroline , fingers crossed there's not to much to sort out, so much for cruising haha
Don't beat yourselfs upto much were all not perfect and your home hasn't sunk so happy days scratches and bumps and be filled and painted 😊
Thanks Chris, yes rhe damage thankfully wasn't too bad, we live and learn to fight another day
Oh, always best to hit it with full speed if you are unsure. things happen much faster with more acceleration. Great job.
the idea was to try and bring the back of the boat around, but it was 20 seconds to late
Wouldn't it be great to have that noisy engine replaced with electric? 😂
It's soo easy to get stuck in places. Learn that the boat turns in a middle point, learn that point on the boat (just like you do with the width of you car turning circle).
It doesn't take loads to drive a boat. It takes loads to learn to do it safely, carefully and not (too) detrimental to the environment (or listed bridges lol)
I’m living on a boat now and was a trucker for many years and had many prangs and things going wrong but it’s the only way to learn good luck guys
it really is, we only really learn from our mistakes, back to the drawing board for this one but will be back to tackle many bridges in the future
You handled that so well! I would have been having a panic attack and crying. Probably smashing things up and making everything worse 😢
Thanks for appreciating the tricky situation, hopefully with a bit more practice we can make it through in one piece
Aww bless ya both, what a nightmare. U kept your cool better than I would. Well done becks good woman! Lisa xxx❤
Thanks Lisa, what a terrible situation, but we got out in the end...heres to river cruising x
Wow what an experience glad your ok Guy's
thank you, thats the main thing
Whew nail biting stuff. So glad you are both safe and through the bridge too. Looking forward to a more peaceful next episode Jawn in Cape Town.🤩
Thank you Dawn, what a hectic episode...I cant wait to get back and have a more relaxing episode take care
