    The Flight is pure art; aerospace engineering, flight business and operations exalt human potentialities and Nature's Beauty.
    Sometimes flying people don't appreciate this magnificence and this is a pity because I think they don't deserve flying...
    On the contrary there are people like you who feel this art and are filled with it so much to have the need and the power of transmitting their experience to those who had not the possibility and the luck of feeling it on their own...
    Thank You.

    In 2002 I was lucky enough to fly AF001 & AF002 between Paris and New York. An unforgettable experience which realised a life long dream or mine. It annoys me when I see people post silly comments about Concorde, its dated design etc. Even today it remains the only supersonic aircraft (not just airliner) that could maintain supersonic flight AND acceleration without the use of afterburners. Its a shame a couple were not kept for air shows - just like the Lancastewr, Spitfire & Avro Vulcan.

    The take-off acceleration was incredible, approx. 250 mph in 30 seconds. And the noise? Bellow Mach 1.00 the same as in any other subsonic aircraft, above the sound barrier esp. above Mach 1.5 the pitch shifted to "shaprper" and higher position. I wish I could experience it again.

    Lovely video! Concorde's retirement had nothing to do with Airbus at all. It was due to a number of factors, mostly due to cost. Concorde was getting old, and increasingly expensive to maintain. It was also running at a loss because of the high ticket prices, and the cost of fuel was ever increasing. Therefore from the airline's point of view it was no longer economically viable to run. BA and AF withdrew their Concorde's from service at around the same time.

  • @BA002

    In the last months of Concorde flight (maybe also earlier) it was possible to get into the cockpit as soon as the plane had arrived to its stand. Everyone could be photographed with the flight crew. I was the last so I had a bit more time than the other passengers. :-)

    With Concorde, the Ara of economic transatlantic flights, died also.
    It was not only faster, it used only a third of fuel as a B747 or an A380, for the flight.
    Cool, even the pilots took photos and videos, knowing that it'll be one of Concorde's last flights.

    "Even today it remains the only supersonic aircraft (not just airliner) that could maintain supersonic flight AND acceleration without the use of afterburners."
    Incorrect. TU-144D and TU-144L editions were able to supercruise and cross the transonic barrier without reheat as well.
    Also, several current fighters can supercruise (and theoretically accelerate to M1.0) without afterburn as well.

    The respective governments then hadmassive debt from investing in this project and needed them to fly...this is why BA was offered them for 1pound each..which is what Branson offered for them and got laughed at. By the time they were given the OK to fly into the US the damage was already done. The US subsequently dropped all plans for their own as the costs were too high.

  • @ahowlettuk
    @ahowlettuk 15 років тому

    I did not know that. Mind you, one still cannot compare the success of Concorde with the TU 144.
    The soviets almost had it but the aircraft just had too many flaws to be a success - hence it was only in service until the end of the 70s.

    ***I still don't understand why these beauties were decomissioned.***
    ...while the fact that they'd been in service for 27yrs should pretty much speak for itself: after the crash+grounding+9/11 combo, when they finally returned to service, the market had shifted such that it was very difficult for AF. After the Canadian incident, they wanted out. Airbus withdrew support, as they didn't feel that one carrier could carry the costs. With that, BA had no choice but to withdraw their service too.

    "and horrible fuel efficiancy."
    Well, first, the word's "efficiency"... and second, it depends on how you measure it.
    If measured solely by fuel burn, particularly per seat, then yes, highly inefficient.
    If measured by fuel usage as a percentage of thrust, then Concorde's engine + ramping system is actually among the most efficient ever built, even today.

  • @EinkOLED
    @EinkOLED 15 років тому

    It was the boeing 747 that killed the success of concorde early on in it's life. That's why both countries that developed concorde UK and France, were the only countries to fly it.
    Cheap airtravel for the sake of an extra few hours favoured speed and time.
    I doubt very much that we will develop such an aircraft in the future, I mean how would we power it?

  • @binaway
    @binaway 13 років тому

    @WarthogMist08 British airways made a fortune from Concorde. Tickets were so expensive they only had to sell half the tickets to recoup their costs and Concorde averaged of 99% seats sold. At one point Concorde made over 60% of BA profits. Airbus that supplied spares was unable to make a profit, particularly after Air France withdrew it's Concorde services and withdrew support to British Airways.

  • @BA002
    @BA002  16 років тому

    So do I... my unedited recording takes about 35 minutes. I filmed and photographed as much as I could, that day and the flight were really fast and short. I dind´t know what to do first. :-)

  • @ImmortalSynn
    @ImmortalSynn 15 років тому

    Um... you do realize that Airbus was the de factor inheritor of Concorde, do you not?
    Also, it was Airbus' decision to withdraw support services (after AF had decided that they had enough) which ~forced~ BA to withdraw as well. Granted, the airlines came to the decision jointly, but BA had no real choice nor alternative.

  • @Ansett76
    @Ansett76 14 років тому

    I think you will find that qwertdr is spot on...wasn't viable for Airbus to keep up the inventory, parts manufacture wtc...high cost/low volume = no profit. Pretty simple really...so after this was announced, this was the nail in the coffin....what Airline has the financial backing to take that on?? Look at the state of BA now...(in fact look at most airlines now).
    Its not having a dig at Airbus..it's just laying down facts.

  • @Theaterfreak
    @Theaterfreak 14 років тому

    I didn't say that qwertdr wasn't, I was just contradicting that it was completely Airbus's fault, because it wasn't. No environmentalist, or any person living around or under the flight paths of any major airport that Concorde would serve, would be able to stand the sound and smell of the turbo jet engines it requires to reach Mach 2 and to break the sound barrier. Think about a fighter jet, and the noise that it makes, and think of that as a commercial aircraft taking off every hour or so.

    I am hoping that Boeing will continue to work on that hypersonic airliner that is supposed to carry more passengers than the Concorde, especially since I never got a chance to fly in a Concorde. The problem with this aircraft is that it was just so expen$ive to operate; burns way too much fuel (one of the expen$ive parts of it).

    @Ansett76 14 років тому

    To run an unprofitable part of your business when you have huge subsidies as it is from Governments (same goes for Boeing), questions start getting asked as to why. SO of course they will offload any support for this aircraft......sure its expensive to run, that was offset by the high ticket costs (even then profit wan't huge) but some would say that the publicity revenue it generated for BA/AF was worth it...exclusive product that you will never have any competetion on is a rare thing.

  • @ImmortalSynn
    @ImmortalSynn 12 років тому

    @WarthogMist08
    Sorry, but you have no clue as to what you're talking about. BA's Concorde was profitable post 1985. After AF pulled out in 2003, Airbus canceled mtx support because they couldn't justify the COST of doing so for one carrier, which would've raised BA's COST of operation above anything revenue could recoup. So yes, Airbus did have a significant role in retirement, because BA couldn't soldier past 5months without their support.

  • @Ansett76
    @Ansett76 14 років тому

    I dont think it was the 747's fault...buerocracy was what killed this plane. The order books were full (even Qantas had 7 on oreder at one stage) but when the US banned it from all airports as an environmental concern (which some say stemmed from the fact they were still developing theirs and needed orders...concord beat them to the post) then suddenly its viabilty went out the window, as to make money US routes were imperitive for Concorde. Thats when orders were cancelled quickly...

  • @Theaterfreak
    @Theaterfreak 14 років тому

    Pulled the trigger? Airbus? No. Concorde was a beautiful aircraft but was not economically sound, and was far noisier than even jets like the Viscount (my father made several trips on these aircraft so I think he knows what he's talking about), and this one of the reasons why concorde was removed from service. And as for rubbish about 'corrupting people's knowledge'
    Yes, the demand for greener and quieter aircraft had something to with it, but it was not Airbus' fault.

  • @jpmckeeee
