Such a realistic conflict. He's not a bad father and he means well. He's just wrong

I love him saying "Not my world". I relate to it so much.

there is something incredibly tragic about the reveal that his relationship with todd was forced to be distant because of the mom's pride. like he had his own problems, but i can also see how he was nervous to unintentionally turn todd against his mother by letting her be the 'bad guy'.

Todd got kicked out at 18 over a video game and didn’t get contacted again until he was 28 because his mom needed a kidney. I’m not entirely sure that’s good parent material

This character arc admittedly ended on a very anticlimactic note with them randomly making the entire lesson about race

I agree a little but that's how his dad, an immigrant who struggled with everything since coming to this country, would see it when his son constantly does all this weird shit and yet doesn't really receive any punishment. I think if you see it from the fathers perspective it becomes sort of clear why they went that direction. I don't know i just love Todd as a character. His small ignorance to other peoples doubts and insults is so astonishing. Even in this scene where his father tells him he failed to raise him right he seems unbothered and sort of confused by the statement. like it had never crossed his mind that he was doing bad in life. I love his response. "you didn't fail because I'm not a failure"(i think this is my favorite line in the entire show). He is so sure of himself even though he shouldn't be. I love how he doesn't even try to argue it and instead shuts it down. I love how it never crossed his mind to brag about the app he developed and sold for millions, or the marketing position at whattimeisit.com, or how he built a theme park. Instead his retort is about him being happy because to him that's the only thing that matters. Its beautiful. I keep coming back to this scene with genuine astonishment

Its actually sort of true in America. Its really hard to explain it to someone who doesn't understand it though, but there are a lot of instances were if I was to do the same thing as a white person, it wouldn't end up the same way.

@aaronp2542 Well, don't worry about having to explain it to me, since I'm mixed. Which brings up a pretty important nuance to this oversimplified race conversation: when is a person considered White or not (percentage-wise), and how much does that influence that kind of privilege, if any, they receive from American society?

@@matthewlee4834 I agree that the show is massively oversimplifying it. Its funny but if we were to truly analyze it, it would take more time and nuance.
I do think outer appearances do matter on a broad scale. The more you can blend in as white the easier it is. That being said i do feel there is still some tier list even between whites especially when it comes to income in America. It just is considered secondary if you don't look white at all.
I hate this division thing honestly. We are all human in the end and should celebrate our differences. Its how we can all improve

@aaronp2542 Very fair points you bring up, and I do agree that outward appearance (e.g. how "white or black" you look) generally seems to have a more important factor in how you're treated. Thanks for sharing your thoughts
