@@kaiserrat70 oh, well i think what they're trying to say is about bojack's mindset. like he believed that surrounding his life with projects and surface-level happiness would solve all his problems. he thought of his life and everything that happened to end like a sitcom, where everything would automatically get resolved, but of course it doesn't work that way. so essentially, happiness and positivity, while good for us, is definitely not the optimum medicine
It seems what I said resonated with a lot of people, but I'm struggling to put a more thorough explanation together even for myself. Bojacks story is about trying all the wrong ways to get better. To me I guess "laughter is the best medicine" is one of those folksy expressions that tries to capture a very complicated concept (pain is usually temporary and you can see the bright side of things if you try) but oversimplifies it so much that the idea is essentially just wrong in most situations. Something you need medicine for is not just the pain it causes, but an actual problem which can be actually addressed. For Bojack this is his childhood trauma (the medicine is not literal pills), and all the ways that catches up with him throughout his life stacked on top of each other (addiction, abuse, etc.). The idea that common sense wisdom is so flawed and so unable to help is the core of the show, because Bojack tries to "fix it on his own" using the advice of culture at large ("become successful, embrace celebrity") and the values of his abusive parents ("suffering for art is good, family is not a source of happiness"). And it gets him nowhere. Things happen in his career and his personal life, but emotionally he's in a mousewheel. I agree with what the other commenter said about external things like trying to make people laugh to distract from his pain rather than actually investigating where it comes from. Well, I did say it only kinda fit
The scene with Beatrice where she talks about she hopes bojack dies before her is even sadder and darker when you know, that she knows how it is to loose her mother at a young age
wow, what a funny show! I sure hope it's not actually dark and depressing! would be a shame if this incredibly funny show had some really dark themes, right?
But also it's not purely symbolic like in Night In The Woods. It's irrelevant 90% on the time then suddenly someone's escaping from a factory farm or visiting an underwater city. It's great. Love the huge variety of species too, so many shows would just have a bunch of cats and dogs and leave it at that.
because it's funnier if you're not focused on the depressing story It's hard to laugh at something when my favorite character is currently in a depressive episode 😂
Zach braff too, named character, has a real life counter part and it was significant enough for Bojack for him to appear in his almost death allucination

Bojack is one of my favorite shows, because even out of context it’s super funny and depressing at the same time

The scene with Beatrice where she talks about she hopes bojack dies before her is even sadder and darker when you know, that she knows how it is to loose her mother at a young age
