    12:00 my reasoning as to why death uses a impractical weapon; he’s quite literally death itself and as death, theres nothing in the universe that could even hope to fight him, he can kill whatever, whenever, so why would he need a weapon at all? Its not a weapon but a tool to harvest souls.

    • @spiritrunner76
      @spiritrunner76 Місяць тому +5

      Aaaaah but here is the rub; Death, traditionally, does not kill anyone. He is merely present at death to escort the soul. The technical term is that Death is a Psychopomp. A ferrier or guide of souls. And many cultures have deities that performed such a role.

    • @ChaoticYak1
      @ChaoticYak1 Місяць тому +3

      @@spiritrunner76 Agreed. Death is not the cause of people dying. He is there to usher the souls who have died to the next world. When Tyranth was talking about the metaphor, it is a metaphor. Not for cutting down unwanted weeds but for harvesting a valuable crop.
      ...and if you're a fan of Terry Pratchett, Death is an anthropomorphization of the process of death and he gets very irritated when people say that he kills them. :)

    my theory is they were made like that by design, to act as a self-defense weapon. Imagine, there's like 15-20 of you out in the field and a random wolf shows up. Or a couple of bandits. There's a big chance you'd have no weapons on you, and it would be uncommon to even own proper weapons as a peasant. So, the best chances you'd have is with the sharp metal thing you already working with.

    As someone who mains sickles in our local fighting group, I gotta say that it’s viable to fight swords and axes or even poleaxes.
    This is because the sickles I own are a bit rounder, so you can catch the blade of a sword and keep it our of your way.
    I’ve fought plenty of swords and I would say that it’s an about equal match with a slight advantage to the sword.
    Axes however are hilariously bad, because if you trap the stick of the axe with both sickles, the head can’t slip out so you got free reign.

      @Tylorean Місяць тому +5

      @@Gokkee no, they are sickles I made using gardening sickles as inspiration. The are a bit less than 3/4 of a circle.
      Id say they take quite a bit of training. They are a lot more complex than a sword or an axe because of the unusual shape, the fact that you need to wield two offensive weapons instead of using one defensive.
      Additionally, there are four different possibilities of holding them:
      Normal with the opening inwards
      Normal with the opening outwards
      Backhand with the opening inwards
      Backhand the opening outwards
      Each of these grips has it’s own ups and downs, making it a rather confusing weapon to fight with and against.
      But it’s very fun to learn, I definitely recommend it!

I was surprised at how well the handheld versions worked - true, maybe not against swords...but dam. I think if you offset them somehow you could compensate for the balance being weird, too. (So the sickle blades were centered at the ends of the pole)
    That could also be a practical reason to have them facing opposite directions. But we know the real reason...it looks f***in cool! 😎

    Death's sickles were more crescent shaped, which probably would lean them more towards functional weapons than a gardening sickle repurposed into one. From what I saw on Skallagrim's video testing a sparring set of these along with this video, I'd say that one of those would make a gnarly offhand weapon rather than doubling them up in both hands. Use something with some reach in the main hand and this thing would be not only great at getting control of the opponent's weapon, it would be a devastating finisher if your main-hand weapon opens up an opportunity to get in close enough to bring this thing into play. It would probably be one heck of a chainmail piercer too.

    In Japan, sickle's have been used as a weapon for some time. It was actually in Okinawa that they were first used as such. After the Japanese took over Okinawa they forbade the people from owning weapons so the people took regular farm tools and turned them into weapons. The farming sickle became a weapons known as a Kama, and then when a weighted rope or chain was attached it became the Kusari-gama. These were used quite effectively. Eventually the weapons was adopted into the Japanese arsenal of weapons arts collectively known as Kobudo.

    Well, I have few sickles laying around. They are old and rusty but I bet I could test them out myself. But, I do remember that back in the days when I was a kid, I used to visit my grandma and she used sickles all the time for, believe it or not, cutting grass for her rabbits that she had. And one time I decided to help her and since I back then was new to using sickles, I remember cutting myself just by touching them by the blades, instead of handle. Just because I wasn't paying attention and was talking to my grandma, thinking that I'm gonna take that sickle by the handle. Well, that was a lesson for me, because that cut wound hurt like hell back then. It was like burning. Good memory.
    By the way, my grandma died back in 2015. She was very old at that time. Like 80 years old. She was a good teacher for me and a good person.

    Very few farm tools can make the transition to a real useful weapon. Axes, hammers, etc...the sickle is "fine" if its all you have, but against heavily armored and armed foes it should probably stay in on farm. It's also going to get you deleted pretty quickly against a man at arms wielding a spear or halberd style weapon. I guess if you are sneaking up on someone from behind...maybe. Otherwise there are a million better edged weapon choices.

    I'm using this as a weapon type in a book I'm writing, but it's science fantasy, so the drawbacks that you're seeing in the basic physical weapon are able to be counteracted by different technologies that shift the shape of the blade, or length of the staff. Also, the fighting maneuvers in use with the characters in my book are well outside those a normal human are capable of (such as jumping through the air in a buzz saw type move with anti-grav tech assistance.)

    A thought... For the one-handed construction extend the handles by another six inches. And offset the actual scythe to be more open by a handful of degrees. Nothing too major, just instead of putting them together at a full 90 degrees make it something like 80. The slightly more open cutting face on the inside of the curve would be more exposed and easier to utilize.
    Oh, and if you want to - really - scare yourself, see how well it reaches around the brim of a shield. Particularly into the head, shoulder, or upper arm of your opponent.

The one example I know was my grandfather who had the scythe over his shoulder his father said something to him from his right, behind him, he turned and impaled his brothers shoulder with he scythe while turning.

    It is always a mental deep dive to see how things made to kill, and things made to just work the farm lands, are often not quite so far apart that they lack effective usage.
    I'd have to say, the biggest downside to them, is something offset by their level of sharpness. Sickles made for things like bamboo or harder harvesting are going to be sharper but the aim is the same. And so is the surprise of being hit by one.
    It is just musing, but seeing how scared he was swinging that monster weapon around is all you'd need to know about how dangerous it was. And, I agree. The look over function thing of fantasy double weapons is always something annoying to see.
    But, to note on that point, it is based more on a video game where you can spin a sword, or double weapon, and have it hit multiple times. Can that happen IRL? No, once the first hit lands, if it cut through enough for the next blade to land another hit... you've no reason to keep attacking. But in a game with HP, armor classes, and the like. More hits are more enjoyable. XD

    My only point of slight contention is that (atleast in the film) Death uses the Staff configuration with the curved blade facing his opponent rather than the point, and in so doing the bottom blade would have its point facing away from you - granted there’s still a blade there so it’s not like you’re eliminating the danger but it may or may not be an intentional choice with the design. Also means you’d get a nasty pommel strike with the point of the bottom scythe facing the opponent.

    can you create the collapsable bo staff used by white canary from legends of tomorrow, its pretty much 2 batons attached to each other which is something some websites have made however in the show there's a quick release mechanism which is something i haven't seen before and I'm curious how you would go about engineering one that is highly durable

      I don’t know what its name is, but I just saw an add within the last couple of days with something like that. It was a cylinder about the length of a fist with a pin at one end. Pull the pin and it springs out to short staff length.

    That was awesome. I was expecting them to be somewhat effective but I was not expecting them to actually be that dangerous. That is really cool. I do have to point out though that Dreamworks totally ripped off Blizzard. Malthiel the Angel of Death uses the exact same weapons in Diablo 3.

    Something to always consider, when examining these sorts of movie weapons, is the strength of the character. Not as in power level, but in raw physical power. Death is a supernatural being and so a lot of the conventional limits that 'mortals' face don't apply. Same with Thanos, he's categorically beyond normal human strength and is more than capable of going toe to toe with godlike beings. Yes, Physics will get him in the end, but he can push how far that is a lot further than you or I could.

    Hey Tyranth.... maybe you should try attacking with the outside edge curves, if it wants to align that way?
    If it is a double edged weapon, you have those options too.

    Sickles are subtlety dangerous, as you can get so close to a foe that the swing of their normal weapons are useless. Yes, it is quite dangerous to close that distance in the first place, but battlefields have never been safe, and "who dares, wins."

    I mean there were manuscripts for sickle fights so they "are" weapons in a sense. Like you said medieval farming tools like the bill were made into weapons so the sickle is somewhat comparable to that in a way

    interestingly, Puss in Boots isn't even the first instance I can think of death being represented with sickles. Diablo 3's expansion DLC, The Angel of Death is also represented as using sickles for his main weapon.

      Ever experimented with a canoe paddle? Those things are - versatile - . You can use it as a walking stick, dig a fish trap in sand, use it to prop up or brace a lean-to, paddle a boat, club yourself some food (or knock it off of trees), and if it has at least one steel edge (trench-shovel style) you can cut instead of club for all of the above.

    hello first comment here on your channel, love everything you and Shadeversity do! I think I know a game searies you guys will like that also has great weapons, Darksiders. its not a spoiler but in the second game Death's main weapons are better versions of the ones in Puss in Boots the last witch because it solves the problem of one blade pointing at you at all times while you swing. I hope you will enjoy those games if you decide to cover them with your group Nate.
