    Hi There, can you simply remove the laminate and then stain and finish the wood? Would this effect the tone?

      Yes, you can strip the drum, remove all glue residue and then finish/stain the drum. If you are playing acoustically you may be able to tell a difference between a wrapped shell and a non wrapped shell. The non wrapped shell hypothetically should be more open as the drum is free to vibrate more. This can be very subjective though.
