I have restored many kits over the years and I have found that a really good way to restore old/rusty hoops is a combination of WD40 and ordinary kitchen tin foil, the foil is abrasive enough to remove the rust, but soft enough not to scratch the hoop, also to remove any badges that are glued to the wrap without damaging them, use dental floss to gently 'saw' away the glue.
Wow, i've wanted to re-wrap my drums for about 3 years but never knew how or found confidence in videos i've seen. This gave me all the info I needed! Thank you!
I re-wrapped my first Pearl pro kit many times over the years, until it was sold in 1985/6. I had to, as one of the toms supplied, was in a diff color. Tried many diff materials. Including metallic sheet an metallic brass. Finally I wrapped it in white plastic. The shells were phenolic so were in good condition. Only the kick were in wood fiberglass. All this was done in the UK, where wraps were not widely available, then. Thro my experience, I also wrapped kits for other people in a drum shop. I had a complete list of the sizes an lengths needed to complete. I used d/s tape to hold the wrap on the shell, then carefully mounted the brackets, holders an lugs, finishing of with a second strip of D/S tape, to seal it all As long as u started at right angles to the shell, u could be guarenteed to wrap them without gaps when closing up. I always did a good job, as it was important to produce a quality product. I loved it!
I want to do this I’m wanting to get the president deluxe series kit but I’m wanting a vintage color they don’t offer just to have a very quirky different design yet still be a node to that classic vibe
You’re supposed to glue both the shell and the wrap for a very permanent and stronger adhesion. This will also prevent wrap shrinkage and wrap splitting later. I’ve wrapped almost a dozen kits in the past 2 years. I’m not a professional but this how I was taught. The rest of your video is perfect!
thanks for the comment! Actually we put glue on the whole surface of the wrap as well as the whole surface of the shell, so if I don't misunderstand we use the same technique as you :)
thanks for the nice feedback! unfortunately I am not completely sure which one it is. I checked on vintagedrumguide.com and it looks like the thunder king in the 1969 catalogue, with white pearl (original color). The "free adjust" double tom arms look pretty much the same, and so does the rest of the hardware. Regarding the shells I'm not sure though.
Well done! Könnt ihr den Scotch Weld Kleber gegenüber dem Pattex (hinsichtlich Klebekraft, Ausdünstungen) empfehlen? Die Dämpfe vom Pattex sind echt unerträglich ... Danke!
we sell wraps in our shop stdrums.com which are made especially for drums. The most famous manufacturer of high quality wraps is delmar in the USA - they make high quality stuff, but we also got drumwraps for a lower budget.
Yes, it's possible, however, we always roughen the lacquer finish with sand paper before putting the glue on there. The glue will stick better to a rough surface compared to a flat lacquered one - so the lacquer can not be easily restored when you remove the wrap. However, we are currently working on a project with thinner wraps that can be put on top of lacquer and can be removed without damaging the lacquer - we will upload a video on that probably soon
A very lengthy and involved process. I much rather order my wraps precut and with the hi-bong adhesive ends. Wrap seams should meet at a pair of lugs, so they help hold the wraps tightness. Thanks for posting.
basically you can use any small pointy thing to poke a little hole in the wrap from the inside out (we used a very small screwdriver in the video), and then use a tapered reamer from the outside to poke into those holes and really open them.
I think you may have glossed over the trickiest part of a project like this for a person who doesn’t really know what they’re doing, removing the factory installed grommets without destroying the drum. Other than that a very informative video.
im probbabbly gonna do this i wantted an yellow drum set becoue i think it looks cool but there was a really good deal for 40% off a really good drum set but it isn't yellow so yea even when its new im still gonna do this
I just scored a vintage Ludwig that the entire rap was taken off of the four drums I'm eventually going to do this but I have to look for an American company to get the wraps from
Delmar Wrap is made in USA. You can order it easily in US. All wrap from ST drums is Delmar. In fact most manufacturers the world over use Delmar wraps. It’s the industry standard.
Actually, we did sand it inside and outside - even though you can't see it in the video (you can see a bit of outside sanding at 1:48 though). We tried to make the video as a tutorial for rewrapping in general, and you don't need to sand every drum on the inside if you want to rewrap it.

Thank you! I’m about to clean up my kit so this is awesome

I had the same set! My first drum set. Bought used in 1983 or so. My nephew now has it. Great sounding drums.

Thank you for this amazingly helpful video.
Great video! was recommended 0000 steel wool which doesn't scratch the hardware and it worked great :)
The drums really look nice good job these things you have to take your time you can't rush.?

Wow, the end result looks fantastic!
Hi! My kit was wrapped with a wood laminate in the 70’s and has bubbled a little bit over time. Is there a way to fix that?
Excelente o vídeo, bem explicativo. Inscrevi - me no canal. A Pearl Dum set ficou linda. Parabéns para vocês. Feliz Ano Novo.
Hi! thanks for a great tutorial. what's the name of the tool you use to enlargen the holes?
Nevermind, found the answer on earlier post 🤗
Hi! Thank you for the great content! I was wondering, do you know what's the model of the Pearl drum set of the video? Thank you!
thanks for the nice feedback! unfortunately I am not completely sure which one it is. Loved the video! I have some drums I don’t use wanted to re wrap them. Where can I find wrap options?
I would have liked to hear the sound at the end.
Amazing, thank you so much for this !
Did you actually got a Pearl President for 50 euros...!!!?!! Holyshit. Those are legendary enough to be re-issued! :O
Thank you so much for this video!
Well done!
Sehr cooles Video! Mehr davon!
What is the correct kind of wrap to use when rewrapping the kit?
we sell wraps in our shop stdrums.com which are made especially for drums. The most famous manufacturer of high quality wraps is delmar in the USA - they make high quality stuff, but we also got drumwraps for a lower budget.
Can I wrap over lacquered shells?
Yes, it's possible, however, we always roughen the lacquer finish with sand paper before putting the glue on there.

Wrap expands and contracts with varying temperatures, so glueing is best as it prevents the wrap going slack.
Totally agree about the wrap seams meeting an a pair of lugs. Looks much neater.
What are the hand tools used to reopen the holes?
basically you can use any small pointy thing to poke a little hole in the wrap from the inside out (we used a very small screwdriver in the video), and then use a tapered reamer from the outside to poke into those holes and really open them.

Thanks for the comment! we are actually working on another tutorial video on wrap and grommet removal, which will be released soon!
Lol, that's the reason I wanted to watch the video.😢
Gibt's bei euch auch noch diese Airvents, die aussehen wie ein kleines Drumset?
leider nicht! Das waren solche Kunststoff Logos, die man unter die AV2 klemmen konnte.
im probbabbly gonna do this i wantted an yellow drum set becoue i think it looks cool but there was a really good deal for 40% off a really good drum set but it isn't yellow so yea even when its new im still gonna do this
Put a glass coffee table up against a wall. Easy to roll it on straight.
Good luck doing it, just leave it to the pros!
I want Sweet Olivia to re wrap my kit.
Olivia is cute!!! Does she play drums??😍 Does she speak English?
thanks for the comment 🤣 yes she does play the drums and speaks english and yes, she is married already😊😂
I just scored a vintage Ludwig that the entire rap was taken off of the four drums I'm eventually going to do this but I have to look for an American company to get the wraps from

Great video 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Why does it need to be wrapped? The natural wood with stain and lacquer looks and sounds better without junk suppressing the sound.
totally agree, my drum teacher did this many years ago and they looked and sounded great.
Olivia doesn’t really do much 😂😂😂
Yeah, Olivia did it all by herself... ;)
And she is very pretty too.
Try removing the wrap on a vintage American drum set,it's glued all the way aroung, you'll lose that happy face
yes - we were lucky with that pearl wrap, but we know the pain you are talking about 😢
70s ludwig black cortex rap be really bad to pull off? i'm thinking of rewrapping. this kit is thrashed but sounds so good!
Use a heat gun
Glass glitter wraps are the worst of all to remove!
Those shells should have been properly sanded inside and out before wrapping! Hideous!
Actually, we did sand it inside and outside - even though you can't see it in the video (you can see a bit of outside sanding at 1:48 though). We tried to make the video as a tutorial for rewrapping in general, and you don't need to sand every drum on the inside if you want to rewrap it.
Those shells are hardly worth rewrapping. Japanese firewood.
