Impeccable heel toe work, and even a couple of double clutches when he knew the revs weren’t quite gonna line up with just the one blip. Gotta love that Dog Leg 5 speed too!
The most impressive aspect of this for me is Damon's speed while treating the car and engine quite gently. He gave other cars room, used remarkably smooth brake and steering inputs, changed gear slowly (not banging them in) and stayed well below the rev limit. He also used higher gears than he might have otherwise done, all giving the car a bit of sympathy. Going that fast while caring for the car like that shows skill, experience and a well-controlled ego.
Agreed, truly amazing. To completely understand where 99.9% is and then drive at 95%. Racing in F1 and Moto GP keeps getting faster and more boring. At least Moto 3 is still exciting. 10% slower and 90% more entertaining.
@@TaikaJamppa Well, the engine survived. The footage I have seen showed that the wrong downshift sent him into the gravel trap. He then hooked it back to 1st and tried to move out but the car is beached... In short, the engine didn't break, he retired because the car got stuck in the gravel trap.

Well, the Cobra actually qualified faster than Hill in the GTO, so it should have the pace to run away. Though both the Cobra and Hill's GTO were retirements in this race. Hill would send this car into the gravel trap after accidentally downshifting from 4th to 1st (yup, you got that right, 4th to 1st). The Cobra was handed over by owner Grahame Bryant to guest driver, Sir Jack Brabham (yup, that Jack Brabham). Sadly, the left rear wheel would come off as he's exiting the pit lane.
This is more exciting than F1! The responsibility of not damaging the car was the obvious reason why Damon Hill did not overtake sooner the light green GTO, which seems to be driven by a very reckless driver.
The green GTO is driven by Sir Stirling Moss himself. Damon, on the other hand, retired after beaching the car in the gravel trap when he accidentally downshifted from 4th to 1st gear...
Aha! So THAT's why Damon had such a difficult time getting around him, if he ever did. Moss must have been in his mid-80s when this was run. Obviously he was still competitive.

Also, Jochen Mass is on fire, he passed car after car to lead the race in a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray!

Watching that Cobra go by gave me a new appreciation for what Shelby accomplished back in the day.
In period, the 250's usually got the better of the Cobra's despite the large engine discrepancy - 3 litre vs 4.7 litre

3 litre engine vs a 4.7 litre. Not much can stay with the Cobras in a straight line.

@@Thou1 the lead of the race is contested between a lightweight E Type, a Shelby Cobra Daytona (driven by Phil Hill and his son Derek) a Ferrari 330 LMB (driven by Derek Bell and Peter Hardman), and there's Jochen Mass who is absolutely flying in a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray!
@@jcgabriel1569 Mostly big capacity stuff then :) Aside from the E-type, but we all know how well the XK engine can be tuned ;) Ferrari 330 of similar capacity but making up for it by virtue of a shorter stroke and more revs.

Really happy for Damon. You can’t go back in time, so getting the opportunity to flog a priceless race car later in life probably means more per-minute than anything driven prior. Maybe.

Well, the Cobra actually qualified faster than Hill in the GTO, so it should have the pace to run away.
Though both the Cobra and Hill's GTO were retirements in this race. Hill would send this car into the gravel trap after accidentally downshifting from 4th to 1st (yup, you got that right, 4th to 1st). The Cobra was handed over by owner Grahame Bryant to guest driver, Sir Jack Brabham (yup, that Jack Brabham). Sadly, the left rear wheel would come off as he's exiting the pit lane.
This is more exciting than F1! The responsibility of not damaging the car was the obvious reason why Damon Hill did not overtake sooner the light green GTO, which seems to be driven by a very reckless driver.
the green GTO seemed to have a bit of Alonso in him.
The green GTO is driven by Sir Stirling Moss himself. Damon, on the other hand, retired after beaching the car in the gravel trap when he accidentally downshifted from 4th to 1st gear...

Stirling Moss ahead in the green 250 GTO (3505GT), and Hill in Nick Mason's 250 GTO (3757GT).
Aha! So THAT's why Damon had such a difficult time getting around him, if he ever did. Moss must have been in his mid-80s when this was run. Obviously he was still competitive.

Also present in this particular race is Phil Hill with his son Derek driving a Daytona Cobra, Jochen Neerpasch is also driving another Cobra (he had a very adventurous stint). Also, Jochen Mass is on fire, he passed car after car to lead the race in a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray!

I think he would of been more forceful with the green GTO if the cars weren't worth £20m plus
