    Great video! I've enjoyed the Tomatin Contrast and a few others. It always seems to be an unassuming malt but often surprises. We may not have appreciated what we had with $80 Tomatin 18.

      Thanks! I was a bit rushed today, but hopefully I can frame the series a bit better next time. Also, totally agree, we did not know how good we had it, at least for prices! Thanks for dropping in, cheers!

    I generally like Tomatin, though I haven't had the 18. Too expensive now (when available). At nearly $10 per aged year at LCBO, I'll skip it.
    I've long loved their Port 14, yet that is creeping up to a hesitation price as well, sadly.
    The 12 is okay, but I think Legacy is actually a better deal all round.
    If I've ever had Dewar's 18, it's probably been in a cocktail at some stage. It's not one I can recall anything about. Enjoyed hearing your thoughts. It gives good points of reference, which is always appreciated. Looking forward to round two!
    Cheers to the weekend, Jon! 🥃🥃

    P.S. Don't suppose you could arrange to send us some rain? Six weeks into a drought. The farmers are plowing fields of dust. Yikes! 😬

      $180???!?! Ouch. I can still get that for $100 to $110. I can't believe I did not put a few away at this price a couple years ago. That said, I will share some thoughts against the 14. For the price, I would choose the 14 each time, and I am actually not a fan of the 12. Dewars is not bad, but not memorable. As for rain, we are just now getting some. Way too many firers buring still. Take care!

      @@WhiskyNeighbour Excited to see this series and thanks for this comment on the 14 vs 18. The 14 is one of my favourites and so I am happy to see that you would pick it over the 18 - saves me from experimenting with the Tomatin 18. I do have the same Dewars 18 sample bottle that you have and I am curious to try it along with you. I had the Dewars 21 and loved it and now have the 27. Those Dewars 1/2 size bottles are a great way to enjoy older scotch at an affordable price.

      @@terrys9478 I enjoy the 21 so much more than Dewars 18. The 18 is fine, but I would absolutely spend more for the 21!

    OK, I am way off with prices for today, June 2023. Just hitting ZYN.ca I see regular prices: Tomatin $170, Achentoshan $101, Bowmore $160. I will clear that up next video! Another check, BSW has the same for Tomatin, but Bomore is on for $120, so at least it is still possible for some 100-120 range. What happened to Tomatin?!

  • @Rohit_M
    @Rohit_M Рік тому

    $80 for 18 year olds...I wish those days were still with us. Only Dewer's 18's price seems have climbed the least amount. Both Bowmore 18 and Tomatin 18 have doubled or higher. I was a fan of Tomatin for a while but have since moved on. Great quick review of these Jon.

    Hello Jon! As always great video sir. My favorite 18yrs old scotch is The Glenlivet 18 (older version with 43% ABV). I will share that bottle with you later.

      Awesome! Thanks for everything. I will share thoughts on your 18 soon. Have you had Tomatin 18? What do you think of their Sherry, is it too heavy?

      @@WhiskyNeighbour I haven’t tried Tomatin 18, but it sounds interesting. I have only tried only one type of Tomatin which is the cask strength one, which you reviewed it about a year ago. Cheers Jon 🥃 Sláinte

    I think age makes a bigger difference in Speyside rather than Islay scotch. Price has definitely skyrocketed everywhere. I can’t find the Bowmore 18 for less than $184 USD. That is absolutely out of the question for what you get in the dram (my opinion of course). Of those you reviewed, the Tomatin 18 is the most affordable ($135 here). The good news is that I can still find a Lagavulin 16 for $100. To me, that’s still a good value.

    • @WhiskyNeighbour
      @WhiskyNeighbour  Рік тому

      Interesting insight on Speyside vs Islay. I certainly enjoy some young Islay malts. Pricing is crazy and I will try to re-align this series with better comments related to that. Thanks for sharing your experience, and I would agree, if you can get Lag 16 for that, a solid value!

    I like the Tomatin easy-going profile, sadky I haven't tried the 18 yet, though I probably do have a sample somewhere. I need to be more organised! Cheers Jon.

      I find it darker then their usual house style, but their core sweetness does care through. Hope you find a sample, cheers!

    I never had the dal more 18, but I wasn't particaulry impressed with either the bowmore 18, tomatin 18 or the auchentushan 18. If you want to sample some great 18 yr old scotches, I'd recommend the Arran 18, Bunnahabian 19, Tamdhu 18, just to name a few. Wish I had some with me, I'd send you samples.

      @WhiskyNeighbour  Рік тому

      Thanks for the guidance. I bet I would love Tamdhu 18! This series is not about the best 18s though, rather more about if it is worth getting an affordable 18 or not. I will try to frame the next one better. I had so little time today! Thanks for watching!

    • @jonathanbean7097
      @jonathanbean7097 Рік тому

      @@WhiskyNeighbour that sounds like a plan. I like this series nonetheless. I'll keep Tamdhu 18 in mind for you. Craft cellars seems to have some bottles in stock, but it's quite expensive at $255 a bottle. But they do have the occasional sale to get you 15-20% off... which could help make it a bit more affordable. Cheers!

    The prices of a good aged scotch is getting out of hand.

      I know. I feel bad opening these up now as the price I paid is so out of step with the price we have to pay now. Out here, this has at least stayed somewhat reasonable. Do you keep any 18 year olds on the shelf at all?

    My favourite 18 Year old- at an affordable price (for a married man, with childen 😉).
    However, at the beginning of 2023 I saw Tomatin 18 shoot up to either $130-140 🇨🇦
    Brother got us both a bottle at $90, from Superstore
