Enjoyed both the speed and honesty of this review. Very well done. I have opened a bottle of the Tomtin Legacy NAS and I'd expect more from the twelve. The Legacy is a good start to a flight. nothing controversial and still fruity, without being too dramatic. I think the barley and spirit shine through. With a cereal note. This makes your twelve review something other.

When I was in the Inverness area, I had a chance to visit the distillery. It was closed to visitors during lockdown, but when I called the visitor center, they told me I could come in and have a look around the shop. I ended up having a great time over there. The man who worked there was very knowledgeable about their whiskey. I ended up buying a hand filled 14 year old distillery exclusive aged in oloroso, which I need to say is great, and very much up there with the Glendronach. I didn't try anything from their core range, but I can imagine it can be a little generic.

I'm sure they have some excellent expressions out there. I do like the 18, and the NAS cask strength is OK. That's literally the limit of my experience with the brand. That oloroso 14 sounds great!

This 12 is a pass but the 18 is a staple partly because it's still affordable and because it's a good complex partly sherried dram.
Loch Lomond 18 is cheaper but here I prefer the 12. Even though it need lots of time to open up and settle down. The 18 LL is very bland by comparison. IMHO.

@@flossenking my wallet is not a fan.
Money not being an issue I would drink 30 year old Tomatin and 25 year old Laphroaig all the time.
The trend that satisfies our craving for variety is young cask strength. Wether it be official distillery or independent bottlings that show up on the shelf in that sweet spot of $75-100US. That would be where most official 15 year olds live.
So, entry level 12 year olds, the 2 for $100 bottles...what can we say. We all have to start somewhere.
I think the journey has a fork in the road and it comes down to cask strength. I'd you're not into it you can go for age and explore expensive whisky or fancy finishes and secondary maturations. My wallet balks at $130, so I have a few 18s but I love the CS, so I have more NAS and sub12 year olds.
As a matter of fact, Tomatin CS NAS just showed up locally for $60. Very tasty dram, light on the sherry more influence from the refill bourbon. Might be a contender for best young CS on my bar.

@@carlmartinlinder so we agree that a decanter in the drawing room of 25 year old whisky is a Downton Abbey dream.
The reality is that what I want in the glass is superior yet unpretentious intergity 15-18year.
At this point in my journey of only 5 years in early 2022, I am still exploring while also planning for a future time when I'm fully stocked with whisky I like and won't bother succumbing to FOMO to chase the correct latest release. After all this talk, it's just whisky.

Very helpful video. Tomatin is another whisky that I haven't tried in quite a while that I've been considering revisiting. My tasting notes of the 12 from a few years ago suggests 'like not love'. But at least they're pricing their products appropriately. I do wonder if Tomatin is a distillery that could be improved greatly by simply rebranding and switching to 46% and NCF. What do you think?

The Legacy is called Dualchas in the US. It's a great example of Bourbon and Virgin Oak maturation creating caramel and vanilla notes.
It was cheap enough to be a pity buy. You know...not leaving a shop empty handed.
Except that the Deanston is a little bit better and 3% more ABV.
I passed on this 12 . C'mon man! You get what you pay for... 43% etc. There's nothing wrong with generic.
The 46% 18 I really enjoy because I can hunt around for the box to see the words (ncf and natural color). It's a good dram and in reality I could live with it quite nicely on a desert island without complaints. Not generic and not boring. It's also affordable.

The old one, though open for around 10y is much more refined with more european wood and sherry influence. I was quite disappointed with the new one which , I believe, relies too much on virgin oak. I have a travel retail 15 American oak..
I guess since was the only Tomatin I have seen in my area I have not finished it.
It is 46% and it is really good with an oak finish.
It has a nice fruity and honey flavor with the malt kicking in like a Highland malt should and the better American oak cask show that perhaps with better casks they can make a decent whisky.
It is on my finish these first shelf along with a few Islay bottles I opened in 2020.
I found it at the Chinese duty free monster store 5 minutes from house that used to have buses of Chinese tourists pull into their parking lot.
That is where I found my Signet for $150us no tax and my one and only Campbeltown Glen Scotia 16....
It is a shame that Tomatin cannot produce better whiskies.
This 15 is 46% and in decent American oak casks..It sounds as if they finished it in good casks as opposed of using them from the beginning..weird.
    I think I paid $58us for it in 2020.

For me this 12 yo is neither meat nor fish. It is not cheap enough to be considered super market mass consumers stuff but in the same time it is too unspectacular and relatively poorly presented to be in the league of Arran 10, Glenallachie 12, Deanston 12, Bunnahabhain 12 as entry level connoisseur's dram. So, I pass. For me Tomatin core range starts with the cask strength edition, skips the 12 yo and on to the 14 and 18 yo expressions.
Nevertheless i like Tomatin because for the most part of their range quality is there and presentation is what it should be albeit Tomatin looks nothing like the small "craft" distilleries.
    Cheers!

I had the 14 ages ago and remember very little about it. The 18 is good. I've been recommended several other offerings from them, and I'm sure some are really good. I'll get around to more from this brand at some point. Not gonna give up on them, although I don't expect to be blown away. Cheers. 🥃

Nothing special with this whisky. Not bad but nothing notable. the texture is weak, watery.
