I grew up in Frederick, MD and am so familiar with all the roads in this video. It was really a great place to grow up. I live in VA now and have a '79 R65. Great video!
Hi there, Meatpipeify. I am totally new to riding and my first (and only) bike is a '79 R65, which I picked up 3 hours outside of London while working overseas. Can I take it on the highway once my skills are ready? Writing from DC, though I prefer the Virginia side!
@@pw2068 I ride mine on the highway all the time and it does fine. It's not very pleasant though, super windy and generally unenjoyable. So yes, you can take it on the highway, but you probably won't want to very often haha
Another lovely video. Love that you included a lot of the airhead's engine sounds. Will be watching this again in the dead of Winter when riding days are scarce.
Ian, another nice video. I appreciated you making the sound of the boxer more prevalent when mixed with the music. It always sounds great. I'm a little curious to know if you research the history of these places before you go or do you read up on them while you're there? Thanks again for taking us along for the ride. Form is emptiness, emptiness is form.
Generally I look up a few details when I'm jotting down a script, after the fact. For Brunswick though, I go out there every once in a while since it's only an hour from me, so I already knew a couple fun facts about the place. :)
Thanks for the video. I lived in that area until 2012 and my ride to work was Frederick MD to Rosslyn VA. I rode my GS along MD28 every day. Great to see it all again. You should check out the road from Thurmont to Smithsburg, then up to High Rock Overlook, then back around through Sabillasville. High Rock gives a great view of the valley to the west and was a popular jumping off point for hang gliding before 9/11 (it's close to Camp David). Also great to see the old airhead getting road time. I'm rebuilding an 85 R80 now, but also have a 91 R100.
My grandfather (currently 96 years old) worked for the B&O for a short time and would regularly ride to Brunswick and stay in the YMCA there overnight before riding back through the Patapsco valley. I have a lot of family history through them hills! If you come to the eastern shore and ever have bike troubles Ive got a lift table and tools! Ive also got coffee reccomendations!
Cool seeing familiar roads in a video, I've ridden MD28 numerous times (only been to Beans in the Belfry once so far though). Haven't climbed up that hill at Point of Rocks either. Kind of surprised you didn't have a shot of that beautiful old train depot building there, more impressive than Brunswick's (and quite a bit larger than Dickerson's). Too bad you can't go inside the place, would love to see the interior.
That train building there is really cool yeah. Sad that it’s gone to waste. But you should definitely trek up the hill if you’re in point of rocks again, it’s a super short hike for a nice view!
@@stevenbuoni3071 that’s great! There’s two more coming shortly. :) And yeah, do it! Richmond actually has a really great vintage bike scene, they do community rides every month!
I like these videos a lot - been watching them since the Pennsylvania / Upstate NY one. Inspired me to make a similar style video of a recent motocamping journey on my own BMW here in California that I just uploaded. Cheers from a fellow DC native
Nice, one fella. Also that last shot brapping on by was excellent. Pulling the jugs off mine for a reseal next week-- let's see some more R65 maintenance, man!
That's great! I actually just did a reseal on mine with some buddies up in Maryland a few weeks back, my pushrod seals were leaking all over the place. Rolled it up on the stand around 6pm on a Friday and rode home on Sunday morning after cleaning the carbon off the pistons and heads, replacing the pushrod seals, and doing a little work on the points in the can. Doesn't piss oil on the garage floor anymore! Huge improvement haha
Haha, awesome man. You inspired me. Started yesterday morning, just got the second side buttoned up tonight. Didn't quite finish, the headers are sitting waiting for the baby to actually be awake before I go banging them back into place. Wasn't a bad job overall. Just wished I had a better space to work at the house here, ended up having to leave a decent bit of carbon as I was tight on time and just don't have a great cleaning solution-- basement shop so oders/ fumes funnel upstairs. Ah well. You headed to supertech? @@ihutch92
@@ihutch92 I sure hope so. It was a great spot and such a blast to cross on that ferry with a bike. The ferry was attached to a cable across the river and has been knocked out by storms several times over the years.
Nice video….enjoy your travels. I just purchased a 1976 R90/6 in excellent condition that I am now riding. Fun experiencing old school boxers!

Our bikes probably look pretty similar then, wasn’t the 1979 colorwaze also like a faded white/grey? Ride safe. :)

Thanks for sharing Ian, you've inspired me to get out and do more exploring on my bike, not just commuting!
Love to hear it! :) ride safe
Always an excellent watch. Your videos made me pick up a 1987 R65 to tinker with over the winter months here in Cornwall UK.
That’s great! Keep ‘em breathing. :)
You and Nick Adams tie for best moto youtube channel.
Beautiful day for a ride. Thanks for sharing. ...BTW @ the 1:14 mark that deer on the right shoulder spooked me (-
It spooked me too! I think I scared it more than it scared me though in fairness haha

I'll have to check that out! Look like lots of squiggly roads on the maps. :) Hope the R80 rebuild's going well.

8:25 beautiful vintage Volvo P1800!? That airhead and those stops looks like a rather perfect day. Jeez, that coffee shop!
Couldn't tell you! I guarantee I'm the last person you want ID'ing vintage cars, I haven't a clue. :)
Dope. I'm in Leesburg now and riding an old Bonne, always looking for a good coffee shop run. Brunswick added to the list!
Yeah Beans in the Belfry is a good destination coffee shop. Any time I go there’s usually groups of cyclists or motorcyclists. :)
Hey Ian - love the videos. Giving me inspiration for some road trips. I live up in NE and have a '78 r100. Let's go for a ride!
Like NE DC? We should definitely meet up then! aren’t too many airheads in town!
I’ve been enjoying your videos! I need to sign up for the motorcycle training course. Maybe I’ll see you on the road! I’m down in Richmond.

Nice video. I keep thinking I should put a tag on my r65 in the shed and start riding. Perhaps in the spring time
My old stomping grounds! I used to ride out there a lot when I lived in DC.

@@ihutch92 Oh yeah! Is White's Ferry still operating? I used it to cross to Virginia whenever possible.
Unfortunately not. :( I saw an article in April that there was hope it’d be reopened, but I haven’t heard any more yet.

Ian your retro motorcycle jacket is just right. Do you remember what brand and model it is? Thank you
It’s an Oxford Route 73! I’ve gotten a good four years or so out of it and it’s as good as new honestly. Great jacket. :)
@@ihutch92 Great looking jacket, even better you're happy with it. DC is humid in the summer do you have a mesh jacket preference. Thanks!
