Going to an Airheads tech day in Maryland

  • We got some bizarrely warm weather recently, and it just happened to be the same weekend as a tech day up in Maryland. So I hopped on the bike and rode up to hang out with some other airheads and to change the oil and seals in my front forks!
    If you have an airhead and want to join days like these, you can join the ABC at airheads.org. It's really how I've found others keeping these old machines on the road!

    That event is such a cool idea. Although wrenching is something best done alone (for me personally) I very much appreciate this kind of event with like minded people.

      Yeah, most of my maintenance I just do on my own, but when there's larger projects or something I'm unfamiliar with, it's really nice to have more experienced heads around for sure!

    Thanks for yet another excellent video, makes me wanna go out for a ride today on my 95 R100RT today. Unfortunately, I am swamped with other projects in the garage, but your video kindles the spirit to ride. Agree on the joys and benefits of joining the Airheads BMW Club. Thanks again

    Hi, nice to see how much quality time you have with the R65. I just brought my R80 through the contrôle technique (you are obliged to pass that one here in Luxembourg every 2 years for véhicules historiques). Hope, you will continue to have fun with your beemer this year.

    Good videos and nice editing! It’s a lot of work to film oneself.
    Sorry if you’ve covered this or been asked before but I was wondering who made your seat? Is it a Texavena by any chance? Trying to decide what to do with my LS’ upholstery/saddle. Cheers be safe!

      It’s a good question, because I don’t know! And I’d like to because it has a big crack in the leather right in center of the seat haha. I have also searched high and low for what it might be, and the previous owner doesn’t know either. So if you find out, let me know! :)

    The world does indeed seem atomized! Well said & nice video. The airhead community is great. I live up in westminster, and there are some beautiful empty roads up here. Ride safely!

    Excellent job, Ian! i owne the same bike (even the color), and your videos are truly inpirationals to me to ride again, after many years. I would like to ask what's the brand and model of your helmet (the grey one), it is very cool too. Keep on riding, filming, and posting here. Ciao dall' Italia

      That’s great, glad you like it. :) And the helmet is an AGV K6, I love it. Light, quiet, comfortable, it’s a great lid.

    Always love your videos, Ian. Also, which gloves are you wearing here? They look comfortable and simple

      @@1974HondaCB350F depends on what part of the video you mean! The olive ones are Rev’it Mosca Urban gloves, they’re summer gloves. Also got a little chilly on the way home and put my cold gloves on though, they’re Rev’it Craters I believe? Ostensibly waterproof but not really haha. Still fairly warm though

      @@ihutch92 You're right! I didn't notice that you had switched gloves in the video. I was primarily interested in those summer gloves. Thank you for the quick reply! (Also, I'm hoping to sell my '74 Honda CB350F soon and replace it with a more capable airhead. Looking at R80RT's or R100RT's in particular. Love your videos for the airhead drooling!)

    That was a fun trip. I'm curious, what weight fluid did you put into the forks? Do you have OEM or aftermarket shocks on the rear. Also, I enjoy your rides on the naked bike. I have an RS and sometimes I'd like to try the naked ride.

    • @ihutch92
      @ihutch92  7 місяців тому +1

      So I put 5 weight in the front, which is lighter than the (I think) customary 7.5. Since my bike is a little lighter and I wanted more responsive feel, I went for the 5. And I do have aftermarket shocks on the back, but only because my original ones were leaking and due replacement. I kept the stock springs and I think replaced them with shocks from progressive!

    Thanks for these airhead videos! Gear question - what boots and heated vest are you using?

    • @ihutch92
      @ihutch92  6 місяців тому

      The boots are TCX Heros in brown (love them, though they aren’t totally waterproof and they can get pretty sweaty in the summer) and the vest is a Hotwired 12V heated inner vest (has served me well, works great, no complaints)! :)

    Hi Ian. Nice video - thanks. What is the make and model of the tank bag you have? It looks a pretty good fit on the tank. I am looking for one that will fit my 1981 R65 although yours may not be available here across the pond in England. James

    • @ihutch92
      @ihutch92  7 місяців тому +1

      It’s a Cortech magnetic tank bag, I think the 10L variation. It has an unzippable expander, so you can make it larger if needed, I’ve found it to be a great size! :)

    Thanks for sharing. Wish I could make it to a tech day myself as I also have an R65 that could use attention. I received my bike from previous owner with minor headlight damage and, as usual, looking at BMW parts prices is eyebrow raising. I noticed that you have a non stock, possibly Japanese, headlight on your bike that fits nicely. What headlight is that on your bike?

    • @ihutch92
      @ihutch92  5 місяців тому

      I actually have no clue what kind of headlight some previous owner slapped on mine, but it isnt the right kind haha. I actually ordered some replacement parts for it from EME, but the bracket seemed about an inch too large for the R65 headlight parts. You might check with EME, the lens/reflector I got from them was quite affordable!

      The MOA forums are good, but the MOA is a bit expensive tbh. You can do that, but in my view the real action is actually in local email listservs. Incredibly old school, but kinda where the discussion happens. Where are you located?

      After digging around my manual, I suppose you are right! Thankfully I haven’t ever experienced pinging, even on long rides on hot days, but still, I’ll start throwing 89 in it now! We live and learn.
