    Walking over certain ledges doesn't work in 60 fps since the engine originally is meant to run the game in 30. Momentarily turning off 60 fps make you able to walk past those spots, for anyone wondering :)

    I hate that place in the Great Hollow so much, I actually get the Lordvessel first just so I can warp out of that place.

      Recently I re-played the game and went there before getting the LordVessel (for some stupid reason idk) and then I thought I got softlocked there. After some minutes, jumping solved the issue.

      I honestly believe great hollow and ash lake are two of the worst areas ever i hate them with a passion, ah yes lets just add seven hours of platforming with inconsistent collisions and shitty controls and just fill the entire area with invisible barriers and platforms that just slide you off to your death, after you're done with that let's duplicate one the worst side bosses in an area that looks like it's been made in map editor, i love DS but goddamn these two areas and demon ruins are nothing short of hot garbage

      all 3 games are really easy once you play alot, its mostly because you know where the real hitboxes are after a while of trial and error. all 3 are shit made games, 1 and 3 has only gradually better hitboxes than dark souls 2 for bosses, although when it comes to terrain hitboxes dark souls 1 has the worst.

      Correct. These hitboxes ain't good but compared to some of the shit that happens in DS2, they're incredibly mellow. Getting hit by an attack that didn't even touch you is extremely commonplace in DS2.

      That is what I hate as well. I see no problem in criticising the game, (I also have my issues with it, even tho it's my Favorite game) but it gets really tiring to see people being absolute hypocrites about ds2 just because the brainless sheep who probably didn't even play the game find it amusing. They sometimes just straight up pull stuff out of their asses to complain about, and if you call them out, you're a fanboy.

      @Solur Elden Ring is the most egregious one by far. There are too many enemies like that. Good luck using a shield against those stamina-draining monstrosities. And, if you want to even have a *chance* at tanking a hit with a shield, you’ll need to level up your endurance to insane degrees. Not that it helps much, since most starting characters will have 90 and the maximum is 154.

      The hitboxes shown in this video are only bad because DSFix was used to unlock the framerate. Dark Souls simply wasn't programmed to run above 30FPS, as much of the game's logic and physics are tied to the framerate, which is quite archaic though certainly not uncommon in Japanese games at the time. A few of the many issues caused by a higher framerate include the enemy AI making decisions twice as fast, wonky collision detection (e.g. getting stuck on nothing), falling through the ground when sliding down certain ladders, animations in cutscenes being jittery, shorter jumps and rolls (making certain areas inaccessible), and of course, inaccurate hitboxes. And that's just when the game is running at 60FPS; Dark Souls is virtually unplayable at any framerate above that.
      However, to be fair, that one part of the Great Hollow has very odd collision even when the game is running at the intended 30FPS.

    its funny how i never hear the "lol shockwave" and "lol bad visual but he did hit you" arguments about literally any other game series that does this shit. Invisible, impossible to predict shonen anime shockwaves in an otherwise painfully realistic melee combat system and pathetically synched animations that totally fail to communicate what the hell is actually hitting what are only a problem if you aren't dark souls, i guess. I recall some dark souls speedrunner who went into the actual game files and broke down just how fucking broken stray demon and smough's hitboxes are for certain attacks, how both have hitboxes that linger WAYYYY too long after the attack has finished, how many enemies have AOEs with 0 visual communication of it, and yet you have "pros" not 1/10th as good at the game as him mindlessly rattling off "lol git gud" in response to those same issues.
    Dark Souls has many great design elements that make it stand out from cookie-cutter trash most mainstream games are these days, but it has just as many pathetically outdated and bone-headed design elements that betray its experimental budget game status that "fans" will completely warp their entire perception of video game quality in order to excuse. There's some great level and encounter design, enemies tend to have well-designed attacks for all kinds of scenarios... but the second one of those elements fails in even a small way, the whole encounter completely falls apart due to the metric ton of jank and inexcusably retarded AI.
    The tagline for dark souls shouldn't be "prepare to die", but "prepare to cheese", cause that's what you'll be doing 90% of the time. Either get annihilated by an enemy a few times or dance around for about 30 seconds and you'll spot that enemy's cheese, the one attack or spot on the terrain that completely breaks their pathetic AI and makes them a total non-threat; rinse repeat 500 times until the game is over. I don't think I've ever seen anyone get past the anor londo archers without cheesing them, either with poison arrows or having them throw themselves off the ledge, intentionally or otherwise. I've been playing jedi outcast II recently, a game released in 2002, and the AI is leagues ahead of dark souls, even the enemies who routinely jump 20ft in the air around floating platforms over a void of death don't kill themselves with nearly the frequency as the average hollow, black knight, painting guardian, etc. Ceaseless Discharge has such broken attacks (fire breath that clips through 100ft of rock, slam attack with no visual shockwave and hitbox a good 10ft beyond where it actually hits) that the devs had to program in an "intended cheese" to beat him if his brilliant AI decides to do a "total BS" string of attacks rather than a "total joke" string of easily avoidable slams that allow you to mindlessly smack him down in 45 seconds.
    Another platitude people love to mindlessly repeat is that dark souls is "hard but fair". If "fair" means enemy attacks all clip through walls while your own overly dramatic sweeping strikes bounce off, enemy arrows not only have perfect accuracy but FUCKING CURVE MID-AIR to home in on you, enemies spin like a top doing full 180s to track you with their hits, enemies have invisible, nonsensical AOEs it's impossible to know about until you get hit by it.... but its okay cause the AI is retarded and encounters are designed to allow you to exploit it, then I don't think the word "fair" has any real meaning. MOST GAMES fit this definition of fair, the only thing that makes dark souls stand out is that the overall difficulty sits in between piss-easy mainstream garbage and sadomasochistic "kingdom hearts 2 optional boss"-tier BS. Dark Souls occupies a virtually empty niche that was once full of difficult, but not overly so games, and people make up all kinds of nonsense and plain incorrect platitudes to suck its dick in appreciation. Given how embarrassingly easy it is to please dark souls fans, is it any wonder at all that ds2 was such hot garbage? Without Miyazaki's personal ambition driving innovation, what possible motive does From have to improve on anything, ever? As far as they're aware from "fans", dark souls 1 was already basically perfect, so even just lazily repeating that with a new coat of paint will result in AT LEAST a very good game, right? Why wouldn't they think that with the kind of slavishly devoted "fans" they have giving them feedback?
    This series brings back a lot of the good from the old days of gaming, but brings back even more of the bad, and adds its own new BS to the mix on top of it. If you want shit like DS2, micolash, brain suckers, etc. to stop, then stop fucking incentivizing it and have some damn standards FFS. I think Miyazaki can easily make an actual masterpiece one day, but not with the kind of feedback he's been getting so far.

      @@Paddy656 they dont if they have good visual cues, For example "the rotten"'s big machete chop tells you there is a shockwave in the form of a thick dust cloud around the machete, and his belly. The abyss watchers landing do this too, only in form of a flame explosion. and the dancer putting her hand through the ground has an aura with circling particles that warn the player of the actual reach of the attack, even though the visual effect is bigger and faster. The problem with DS1 is it gives no cue whatsoever to the shockwaves, so it ends up on an invisible hitbox, wich is obviously shit

      @@bradenmerriman5206 but its not as well defined. some particles fly, but the limits are harder to see. My friend got a shot about a reasonable attack, with a shockwave, but you can see it actually has no visual cues to delimit its range, even though its kind of logical to have an AOE.

      note that the attack doesnt have a visual cue for the actual reach, and the particles that fly are actually launched from the ground and not the attack, so its kind of awkward and inconsistent

      @@Tomeroche pvp hitboxes cant be counted since that has a lot to do with lag. And in the base game in ds1 some of the hitboxes are understandable since they are shockwaves, while in ds2 its usually sword thrusts the attacks with the worst hitboxes. Also in ds2 the hitbox problem is even bigger because of adp. Wich is the dumbest mechanic ever. And also ds1 is older so there is no excuse for ds2 since it should have improve them not make them worse

      I've played both a ton, and I could still say that DS2 hitboxes are worse than DS1 even when being released in a much later date than DS1.

      I have hundreds of hours in both DS1 and DS2 and have encountered awful and fantastic hitboxes, and I can safely say that DS1's hitboxes are decent with some terrible spots, while DS2's are inconsistent as all hell. Sometimes they work just as well as DS3's, but sometimes they work even worse than The Great Hollow one shown in this video

      @@alreadyd1d I haven't had any bad hitboxes at all regarding NPC's, so I'm just lucky I guess. And Ceaseless may have a shockwave but I'm not sure. If Fume Knight can kill you by slowly backhanding you, I guess anything is possible. Ceaseless does however have terrible hitboxes in my experience even with the possibility of a shockwave. He can even shoot through the walls, though that can happen in DS2 as well. Haven't encountered it in DS3 as I haven't beaten it yet but I'm sure there's some bad ones in there too.

    Taurus Demon steps on you. It’s not for a ton of damage, you just had RTSR set up.
    For Ceaseless, that’s clearly a shockwave mechanic, but I’ll admit the shockwaves aren’t implemented uniformly (like your clip of Gaping Dragon).
    Also, that Iron Golem grab is probably the least egregious grab teleport I’ve seen, and in the grabd scheme it’s not too much of a stretch to assume he can adjust the grab to reach further back between his legs, the animation just doesn’t quite match. There are worse examples for sure.
    Was cathartic to see the struggle with the root in the Great Hollow. Always hated that shit, especially the roots in Lost Izalith.

      dark souls has this problem everywhere, crystal cave and great hollow being the most notorious but blighttown, ash lake and tomb of giants do as well, lots of places that look like you should be able to walk but you slip-n-slide instead, or places that don't look stable yet are perfectly fine (e.g. the buttress walkway in anor londo).

    The hit boxes in Ds1 have always been more terrible than Ds2 despite the memes imo. Not defending Ds2 hitboxes, they suck for sure, but I have more trouble with Ds1 hitboxes.

      Bruh no. The majority of hitbox issues are due to running it at 60 fps.
      Never once did I run into these issues on console.

      Viewtiful Void that isn’t really better though. You can either have a game that runs well but hitboxes are terrible or a game that runs like shit half the time but at least you can avoid more of the attacks. I love DS1 but it’s very flawed lol

      @@LelllowI like Dark Souls 2 but it's PvE is possibly the worst in the entire Souls Series. In Dark Souls there are 2 or 3 enemies/bosses with hitbox issues but in DaS2 damn near every enemy has a jank hitbox.
      Now these issues could be more noticeable because the hurtbox lingers too long during a roll or the limited i-frames at the start of a roll.
      Also the enemy movement is fucking bonkers. Move a too far away and they become juiced up crack heads with fast forward animations.
      And don't get me started on how the fall damage being too damn aggressive in this game.
      There's too many repeating problems in DaS2 for me to ignore them on repeat playthroughs.
      That doesn't mean Dark Souls has no issues; literally the 3rd Act of the game is unfinished and a slog to get through.
      But overall it's the better game. And only got one dlc area to flesh it out whereas DaS2 got 3 to help with it's issues.

    FYI big enemies can literally trample you to death just by moving into you. Other cases I believe you can SORT OF attribute to being hurt by the "shockwave" of the hit. A more technical explanation is, your player is partially desynced from the server, just like crazy head shots take place in Counter Strike. None of this is justifiable though.

      Anybody reasonable : the fact that DS2 has much more poorly done and/or telegraphed hitboxes doesn’t mean that DS1 has no bad or poorly telegraphed hitboxes, it just means it has significantly less of them.

      @@Huarizo Do you have any source for DS2 not having less (or proportionally less) bad hitboxes using debug ? It’s literally the first time I hear that and it sounds interesting.
      As for ADP being the problem... When I’m still being hit by things that I should visibly not be hit by despite having as much I-frames as in DS1, wether this is because there is a poor hitbox in the sense of it being buggy, or there is a poor hitbox in the sense of it being terribly telegraphed, that’s a bad hitbox. And I’ll agree I saw DS1 having the latter, although honestly not as much as DS2 (but that might be bias, hence why I’d be thankful if you had some sort of objective tool)

    This game should have been destroyed in reviews. If your core mechanic is the players getting better through learning and deciding the difficulty based on how good they are then all these issues that turn the game into luck based should be weighted heavily.

      Cause a lot of these clips show him walking and not rolling to avoid slams which is the only way you can guarantee not being hit and the amount of I frames you had was based off the role animation you had based on the weight of the equipped gear

      A masterpiece isn’t the same as a flawless piece.
      Few are those (proportionally) who’d say that DS1 is a flawless game, even amongst those that’d call it a masterpiece.
      Hell, a big meme is how horrible the character creator is, which doesn’t speak much about the overall quality of the game, but does show that pretty much nobody thinks this game is *literally* flawless XD
      As for calling it a masterpiece...
      It’s a very ambitious game that expanded and refined on what were at the time pretty novel or fringe concepts and put them (back) on the front of the scene, it has more depths in a lot of ways than most games of its times and spawned a whole genre.
      Calling it a masterpiece doesn’t see far fetched to me even if it has a metric ton of issues.
      If it was a bad game, then I’d agree that being genre defining and very ambitious wouldn’t have been sufficient to make it a masterpiece, but it’s a pretty good if not very good game, and it’s not like it merely did what DeS did but slightly better either.

    Half of these are ground slams that deal AOE damage lol not bad hitboxes, just bad visual feedback.
    The golem grab touched you with its fingertips, the shift into the grab location looks a bit weird but any DS2 grab looks 100 times jankier, like Alonne hitting you with his grab when you're literally behind him.
    Finally, the great hollow one is collision, not hitbox.

      ​@@camharkness The difference is that phantom shockwaves deal very little damage and only a couple enemies have them while the bad hitboxes in DS2 are all over the game and they cause you to lose huge chunks of health.
      Both suck, one sucks way more than the other.

    You can show what you want on the DS1, it doesn't change the fact that the DS2 is the Souls that has the most flaws in the franchise, just for the bad hitbox of most enemy attacks and doing "teleport" animation on the grapple attacks is already the enough to make this game the most inferior, thank goodness that in Elden Ring Miyazaki is in charge 🙏🙏

    I'm shocked to see so many people saying that DS1's hitboxes are worse than DS2's based on this video. I genuinely believe a lot of them haven't seen the worst of what DS2's hitboxes have to offer.
    There is a reason why DS2 gets criticised for it far more often than any other game and it isn't just "blind hate" like what a lot of DS2 fans seem to believe. Yes, these DS1 hitboxes are bad but when you see some of the stuff that can happen in DS2, it makes DS1 hitboxes look tame by comparison.
    Pretty much every grab attack DS2 has the same issue as the Iron Golem's. So many enemies in DS2 with large swords have similar disjoint issues to that Ceaseless Discharge slam attack.
    This is purely anecdotal but as someone who has far more hours in DS1 than DS2, I can say for absolute certainty that I've had so many more hitbox issues in my time playing DS2.
    Getting hit by an attack that clearly missed you is *extremely* commonplace in DS2 and to say that DS1's hitboxes are worse is just pure ignorance, honestly.

      Of course you're right though, I did make the hitboxes look far worse than they actually are for comedic purposes. Most of it is only chip damage, but that stuff becomes pretty annoying when you're doing challenge runs. However, most of the geometry is still royaly fucked on DSR. My only serious hitbox complaint is about Kalameet, which I didn't even get to properly show here. If you've ever fought Kalameet in a challenge run, you'll notice how jank his animations/hitboxes are. And the Iron Golem grab is actually jank too.

    Jank Souls, Jank Elex, and how they're all called. Fuck these games. 99% of the game you do what? You fight.
    What does not work in these games correctly? The fighting and movement mechanics! Clunky as fuchs!
    The tiny pebble on the ground shouts, YOU SHALL NOT PASS! And you the player can not pass, without walking around it, or high jumping above it. If crap like that, would happen only once, no biggie. But its everywhere, across these shitty games!!
