  • Balance exercises are usually wasting your time when it comes to helping a knee arthritis problem.
    Even if you have balance problems, there are other things to focus your exercise on rather than just working on balance exercises.
    Standing for time on a wobbly board, a foam pad, or a bosu ball are all common balance exercises that people do to help improve their balance.
    These balance exercises don't help to correct the root problem of knee arthritis, leaving you feeling continued knee pain for the long term.
    In this video, Dr. David shares 3 reasons why balance exercises are a waste of time for treatment of knee osteoarthritis.

      Thank you! Your videos have helped this old lady tremendously. I cannot tolerate anesthesia so surgery is out of the question. I can’t even take pain meds. My PT had me doing everything that you show to be the worst exercises for knee arthritis. Sometimes, they were making the pain worse. 😳😵‍💫 I stopped therapy and now I exercise daily with you.
      I am improving considerably! Thank you again!!!!

    Listen to the doctor. Balance exercises, especially for older adults, are a waste of time. I have had knee arthritis for 40 years, and I'm still able to walk five miles if necessary. How is this possible? I stopped doing what was causing my knee pain.

    I had meniscus surgery 6wks ago, I do PT twice a week and go back to wrk next month. I do a combination of balance and strength work and PT, I walk 10 min, ride bike 10 min,and elliptical 10 min at gym everyday, plus strength training 3xs a week ...it'll be tough once I go back to work,but I'll maintain strength training. Goal is to get back to running and playing softball by end of June

    I’m learning so much from each and every video! I have challenged physician recommendations in the past. Certainly seems to me that their egos cause them to tumble then they back away from the doctor patient relationship that was allegedly there.

    Do you think wearing stretchy knee supports will keep the knee from getting stronger ?

    • @epmanualphysicaltherapy
      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  23 дні тому +2

      Hi Marilyn, Stretchy knee supports provide stability and can help with pain relief, but they won't necessarily keep your knee from getting stronger. They can offer support during activities, which might prevent further injury, but it's important to combine their use with a proper strengthening and rehabilitation program to ensure your knee continues to gain strength and function.

    Hey there may i ask you I'm working currently on glute isolation which you recommend a lot in your videos.. and I'm avoiding quads activation.. do quads naturally work when walking and doing normal activates or can they be weak too?

    • @epmanualphysicaltherapy
      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  22 дні тому

      Hi @kaysalshaar ! This is a great question! :) Yes, your quads work naturally when walking, exercising, and while doing normal activities. Often, we find our patients have quads that are too strong or dominant, feeding into a muscle imbalance that causes inappropriate forces to be placed on a joint (hip or knee). Your quads will still work when doing some of our exercises like squats and lunges, but your glutes should be working MORE. :)

    What is the best approach to overcoming patellofemoral pain syndrome faster? I am doing PT twice a week, focusing on stretching gultes, hip, and abs. I am going through a Visco injection treatment. My dream is to get back into hiking 5 miles again and re-start weightlifting again.

    • @drkaeppel
      @drkaeppel 23 дні тому +1

      Strengthening exercises for your quads should be included in your program along with global strengthening for your glutes and other thigh muscles. Stretching can be good for mobility and pain relief, but current research seems to indicate that quad strength is paramount for patellofemoral/anterior knee pain. This should be balanced with rest and the right activity modifications to minimize your pain with activity.

    My difficulty lies in an IT band which really fires up after glute exercises. Any ideas?

    • @epmanualphysicaltherapy
      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  22 дні тому

      Hi Mkalikapisa, we are sorry to hear that your IT band flares up after glute exercises. there are various reasons why such as glute muscles have atrophied, poor technique, and muscle imbalances between the glute muscles. and surround muscle groups, tightness, or too much intensity when performing the exercises. We have an IT Band help playlist you might find helpful.
