Just got a gopro 8 and been interested in trying out time-lapse so I took your settings from the first settings explained. I have it setup in my window now, hoping to catch the storm coming in.
That’s great. I hope it works out well for you.
Awesome!

You’re welcome.
Is it possible to time lapse a mushroom grow or will the GoPro overheat for a long time lapse? Can I time lapse for days?
What video is part 3 of this series? Trying to see what's the best way to batch edit these raw files.
Check out this video for part III: ua-cam.com/video/3JQL1DwkEno/v-deo.html
That was very cool. Thanks for the information.
Quick question, when doing option 3 (stills) what's the interval used for combining them all. (How long does each frame last) look forward to understanding the editing process for method 3.
Thanks again
Thank you and thank you for your question. Two common frame rates for time lapses are 24 FPS and 30 FPS. To get 1 second of a finished time lapse video you will need 24 individual images for the 24 FPS and 30 individual images for the 30 FPS. So if I want a 1 minute time lapse at 24 FPS I will need to take approximately 1,440 images. If I want a 1 minute time lapse at 30 FPS I’ll need to take approximately 1,800 images.
The “approximately” is because 24 FPS is technically 23.98 and 30 FPS is technically 29.97.
@@GreatDayForAHike awesome info and that makes sense. @ 1 every 5 sec... ? An hour of original recording?
@@GreatDayForAHike 1440 I'm getting 2hrs of shots? 12 per min. Battery last that long?
Sorry for all the questions.
Jim McGowan You are correct. Yes, I’m glad you asked about the battery. When I did a 1 minute time lapse this past week with the camera setup for 2 hours my battery was down to 47% at the end. I had started off with a fully charged battery. Based on this I would say it is quite possible to do a 3 hour shoot for a 1 minute 30 second time lapse on one battery.
@@GreatDayForAHike Nice!
What would be the EV comp setting if you have an ND filter on the GoPro?
I would recommend keeping EV Comp at 0 in that use case.
Thank you for the video. Please for the last technique what software to use to assembly the images and make a video? Thank you a lot again
I used Lightroom and Premiere Pro
@@GreatDayForAHike Thank you :)
You’re welcome!
@@GreatDayForAHike do you know any application on cell phone that does this kind of editing?😅
The GoPro app can be used for some mobile editing. Adobe Premiere Rush is another option that has a lot of options.
So if Im filming a time lapse in a dark place with some artifical lighting. Would the EV Comp and White Balance values be in the opposite end of the spectrum?
You would generally still want to keep those the same even if using artificial lighting. Example: In this video I used artificial lighting during the night lapse but still kept those values the same: ua-cam.com/video/rpxcHKsZIzg/v-deo.html
@@GreatDayForAHike Excellent. Thanks for the help!
Getting ready to build a horse barn and purchased the gopro8 black to use the time lapse feature. Any suggestions on how often to set the intervals for video?
That’s a great question. I take it you’ll want the camera to take pictures each day for several days and then make one huge time lapse?
The interval you choose will depend upon how much detail you want but if you’re going to have it setup all day each day to show progress I’d recommend a 30s to 60s interval. For a 8 hour day of work this would give you 960 photos a day at the 30s interval and 480 photos a day at the 60s interval.
Thank you soo much for your reply! I have no clue what I am doing, just took it out of the box and the land prep starts tomorrow so I truly appreciate your suggestions! Since it will be over about 10 days Do I have to select the picture option, or is there anyway to combine multiple days of the video footage into one larger time lapse? Open to and appreciate any suggestions/guidance!
If you select the video option this will automatically create your time lapse for you on a daily basis. You could then edit the video from each day together to make one big time lapse.
You could edit these together using the GoPro app or other editing software.
Your saving my life here! Thanks for the speedy reply, I might actually get some sleep tonight after all! Lol If I understand correctly the video option uses less of the memory card space, that was my only reason for thinking that might be a good option. Our horse barn has been a long time dream so I really don’t want to screw up the documentation lol
Is GoPro 8 able to shoot "Astrophotography" quality time-lapse, say of milky way? The essence being able to shoot at high ISO without much noise, in 20 or 30 seconds each, shutter time of exposure for each individual images thus 2 or 3 pictures per minute? Is so, where do you adjust an set the shutter speed for each photo? as I can see the ISO setup and there is no F stop with these I guess, all at wide open.
Great question. Yes, it is. I recently made a video that explains the best settings I use for night time photography/time lapses on the GoPro.
The video can be viewed here: ua-cam.com/video/I7imnVt02Ks/v-deo.html
@@GreatDayForAHike That is great. So please leave me a link here, once you uploaded as I have subscribed and checked you bell but don't want to miss that episode. Thanks again.
Dear sir, can you tell me how to transfer the video from the gopro 9 to the 4K TV, I used a memory card and there is no benefit, as well as a data cable, and the same thing. I hope you will give me your information.. Greetings
From what I understand most TVs do not have built in storage for transferring data. However, if you want to play video from your GoPro on your TV I recommend moving the video file(s) to a USB drive and plugging that into the TV (if your TV supports this function). This has worked best for me.
@@GreatDayForAHike Thank you sir I will try
Whenever I start my time lapse video it records for two seconds then just stops, is there any way to fix this did I mess with settings too much, or am I missing something. Please help, I feel like I overlooked something
Also I have a GoPro hero10
Does your MicroSD card have enough space and is it on the GoPro approved list of MicroSD cards? Also, did you confirm you didn’t have the duration set to limit the time lapse? I would check those first.
@@GreatDayForAHike
Yeah my SD card is one of the approved ones on the GoPro hero10 list, and my SD card is empty at the moment. And it's currently set to no limit, but it works fine if I set the limit to 1-3hrs though
That is an odd issue. I expect resetting the camera would likely fix this but so note that if you do this it will wipe out all of your custom settings and you’ll have to key those in again.

Yup, that intro was a bit long. I’ve made efforts to shorten my intros a bit since then 😃
These videos are always so frustrating because they skip steps. @2:20 HOW DO YOU GET TO TIME LAPSE MODE?! It doesn't help me to explain how to use the mode I don't even know how to start. Thumbs down.
My apologies on skipping a step. I’ve learned a lot since creating this video and make great efforts to not skips steps now. You need to press the mode button to toggle to the time lapse mode.
