My last one had a magnetic switch instead of a pin (small handheld magnet defeated that pretty easily) and the new one we got last year actually has a locking mechanism that won't let you open the lid when the wash and spin cycles are running. It does however stay unlocked during the water fill cycle is going so you can add that forgotten shirt that dropped out of the basket on the way to the laundry room.😁

I did this with my old 40+ year old kenmore series 80. Let me TELL YOU. Grossness! I started out with doing laundry stripping in it. Instead of doing it in the bath tub like everyone else had been doing. And immediately after doing it I realized my washer didn’t have that wet smell anymore. You know, not quite moldy, not quite mildew, just smelled very faintly of stagnant water. Well, that was gone. So I did it without clothes in it, and WOW. what came out was disgusting! So glad I did it because my washer ran so much better, filled faster, DRAINED faster, and over all washed faster, better, and fresher than ever before! It was even QUIETER and more balanced! Such an incredible improvement

WR ZL1 fabric softener and hard water leave residue like that-hard water is descaled by things like washing soda in the video and is often what causes the dirty looking water from the minerals. Detergent is made to rinse clean. I have soft water that reads at zero on a test strip and use powder detergent in appropriate amounts. I’ve had my washing machine for YEARS and running a cycle like this produces zero results for me. No slime, no dirty water, nothing. It’s mostly clear water with a few agitation bubbles.

I would recommend dishwasher soap or pods. It removes the waxy and oily buildups by design, and it designed to be soft on plastics and stainless steel without sudding up during agitation. Takes less time to remove the buildups. You still have to use really hot water though.

Oh please tell me how you did it for a front loader!! I don’t see how it could work, how do you net the scum, how do you find where you can clean where all the lint gets stuck and gummed up?! Please help anyone!

@@fireflysparks1105 Been a minute since you asked this question...but...I wouldn't worry about netting the scum. there is a drain filter on the front of front load machines. I would clean this out after running oxy through a super hot cycle. You may wish to clean it before you run that cycle as well. Look up Videos on how to clean drain filter.

Having just now disassembled a twenty year old front loader I
noticed a measurable amount of film/grime build up within
the baffle elements. Some baffles are easy to remove and others
aren't. The worst was on the spider arm behind the basket.
A tough film covering about 1/3 of the inner basket there was.

I'm thoroughly DISGUSTED! 🤮 I'm stuck using the pay washers on site as my apartment does not have hook ups. I would have to imagine what kind of scum one might find if they were to attempt to clean the washers as you did yours! Well done! I just hope all that muck wasn't the "glue" holding the thing together and it's still working fine. 😊 Many blessings to you. 🙏🏼

Apartment size portable washers & dryers!
Man, I sure do wish I knew they existed during my past 10 or so years living in apartments!
Do a quick UA-cam search. That should be a life changer. You can pay as little or as much as you want for them.
      No need for washer/dryer hook-ups.
Even some of the cheapie 2 in 1 washer's w/ the little attached spin "dryer" (not an actual dryer- just a very efficient spin cycle) But even some of those guys have some pretty great reviews on UA-cam.
I feel your pain. I've had my clothes stolen numerous times, have had whole loads ruined because some asshole dried their clothes with some chewing gum and didn't bother to clean it out 😑
sigh. I can go on, and on, but I'm sure you are well aware. That struggle is REAL.
I normally don't leave comments this long haha, but I really wish someone could of told me these portable apartment-size machines existed, let alone, were an option.
      Best of luck Lisa!

I have a front end loader. When I first bout it 18 years ago the sales guy said whatever you do, age the door open when not in use, and run a sanitary wash with a cup of bleach once per month. I’ve done that religiously and no issues. I even remove the drawer from where the soap, softener go and air dry that and rinse out the chamber where it goes in. It was disgusting the first time after 5 years of owning. Machine smells and runs like new always.
