Most useful of all the washing machine videos I've seen. That said, my washer likes to drain. I had to unplug it as soon as it started. So for those with the same problem, just fill and add oxi while it fills, leave it open, unplug when it's done filling. I ended up agitating by hand and manually spinning it while wearing gloves that gave me some friction. The results were pretty eye opening. So much crud. Filtered so much out. Drained, reset, and ran a light cycle with a tab cleaner for good measure. Thanks for the video!
Appliance tech here, that is a whirlpool built direct drive made for sears, hence the kenmore name on it. They no longer make that machine, but in my opinion, best damn washer ever built. Mine is about 30 and still bulletproof. The outer tub towards the top is where all the soap, dirt and fabric softener accumulate to leave that smell. By over filling it, not past the point of overflow with water, your solution will get rid of it. Good job
I used 2 gallons of white vinegar, filled the tub with hot water & let it sit for several hours. Follow with a hot wash cycle with detergent. Got rid of the moldy smell completely & hasn't returned yet. Update: The smell has returned... though not as bad as before. Will have to try oxyclean now. 2nd update: I substituted 2 gallons of chlorine bleach for the vinegar & that worked great. No more stinky, moldy smell.
I was wondering those who had a molding smell, do you leave your top doen when not in use? I leave mine open and never had a mold smell. My top laoder is 20 years old.
I always leave my top open ( or when I used the front loader left the door open). Never had any smell or mold. I’m doing this cleaning now, but so far in 45 mins the water is still clean. So I think my washer is fine. I also don’t use a lot of detergent ( 2 tbsp per load only) and pretreat AND soak my clothes, so i think that’s working for us.
Everybody in the comments is making this harder than it needs to be. We have a lot of animals, have washed many pee pads and doggy blankets, greasy clothes. I bought the small Oxyclean and used the whole thing (about 8 scoops), let it agitate a bit, shut it off and got my small cone bottle brush with a tiny mop end (you can find them on Amazon-bought two to clean the jets in the nasty spa tub my husband wanted). I swooshed water up and around the edges of the inside, the lid and the hinges and went to town with the small bottle brush. Got up in the edges of the drum, under the base, in the softener and bleach dispensers and then just took my hands or a rag and swooshed the water up carefully to rinse the residue out. The amount of funk and hair that I got out was oddly satisfying. While I was doing that, the water was just setting and looked like dark tea already. I let it agitate for a while longer and shut it off. I'll start it back up in a few hours, let the cycle go and then do another "full clean/rinse cycle" later. It's looking so clean that I don't want to throw dirty clothes in it again. For reference, we have a Speed Queen top load with touch buttons and lock top. It was expensive but we bought on of the efficiency smart fill ones and it wouldn't fill the water to cover the laundry at all and everything was still dry and dirty when the cycles were done so we returned it and paid the difference for the Speed Queen. I never in my life wanted to spend that much money on a washer but I love it so I'm going to maintain it the best I can and this cleaning is a good start. As far as him straining it....all you need to do is place a large kitchen strainer at the end of the drain hose as the washer is emptying before it goes down the sewer or where ever yours drains out to. You might have to manually hold the strainer until the initial draining is finished but that's how I would do mine. Sorry this comment was so long but I'm trying to assist anyone who had questions or concerns with the process.
If you want the machine to fill to the brim on its own hold the water level selector over the largest setting once it has began agitating and it’ll continue to fill to the highest safest level and it will auto shut off once it’s reached that point which will be close to the rim but safe enough to still agitate without any spilling over the top.
Thank you sooooo much for this. I do seem to need a whole deep clean suddenly (pro tip - do NOT use washing detergent "sheets" - they gum up the washer something fierce...which will now cost me $99 to have Sears come clean since the model manual is not available), but all the guides online said to use like 1/2c of soda or 4c. vinegar, which I did multiple times and which did nothing (my washer worked PERFECTLY before the detergent sheets). I tried a scoop of Oxy with it too and clearly I needed a LOT more of that, plus the long soak is something no article online teaches. Since no YT video shows how to take apart my particular model and they are not similar enough to "wing it" (tried), your video is my next try before the $99 service on Monday... THANK YOU!
Other pro tip, stop using favbric softener. It gums up tha machine and leaves a waxy coating on your clothes and towels that make them feel softer. Because your towels have a waxy coating on them now, they don't dry as well. Your clothes invite dirt to cling to the waxy coating as well. Waste of money and it destroys your machine.

Just unplug it. The pump that drains it won't run very well without power. If your machine is a fancy new one that only has buttons to operate it, I would not due this. But the older one with the big knob that clicks are fine because you can manually set it to drain. Honestly, even the new ones should be fine because they are designed to function if there is a power outage while being used.

I mentioned in my own comment how I did it with my automatic washing machine. (The Pause button is your friend): I set it for a large load, general clean with hot water. I made sure to set the Spin option to skip! I just added 5 scoops of oxygen bleach powder. I let it agitate for 10 minutes into the wash cycle, then just pressed the Pause button. That's how I let it soak. When i was ready to drain it all, I pressed the Next button multiple times to skip all the steps until the last option, so it would automatically drain. I found the forced draining was TOO FAST, and some bubbles were coming out of my bathroom floor drain, so I immediately hit Pause, and it continued to naturally drain, but much slower!
Is there any way to allow the washer to fill when you have a “sensing” Kenmore machine. I believe the “cleaning” cycle will fill it but it drains right out. I can’t stop gunk from coming out of the agitator and getting on my clothes. Help!:)

I was just typing a question which you answered at 3:00-so it will just have to be taken out if it’s really bad. Also do you drain the yellow water or did you dump it?

Have you made a video for the newer style washers? I thought that maybe I could figure out this method with our washer but it drained all the water just like you said.
@@WasherDryerMoney any updates on the newer style washers? We keep getting some kind of clumps on our clothes after each cycle. Im wondering if this might help.
i think my kenmore is from the 80s or 90s and still works. i think my clothes aren't getting clean though. id rather keep this thing that was built to last, and just clean it, rather than buy some new junk that's gonna fall apart in a few years.
1/2 gallon cheap white vinegar, 1/2 med box baking soda,1/4 cup liquid peroxide. Tub clean cycle or let it pump out a very tiny bit of solution to clean water pump in reverse.
Just use straight vinegar - it is acetic acid. If you put baking soda in, it neutralizes the vinegar, hence making the vinegar's cleaning properties zilch.
Hi! Thank you for the video. I bought a second hand washer and I’ve done 3 empty loads already and everytime, there are grey lumps or tiny rocks coming out of the inside of the washer. Is this gonna work?
It depends on what it is that is in the washer. OxiClean dissolves a lot of organic materials, but there are a few that it cannot dissolve. Sometimes the best solution is to see how difficult it is to remove the agitator and inner drum and just clean it. But the OxiClean solution may be a, good one to start with. There’s also some tablets they sell that use a different chemical to break down materials you may want to give those a try as well. You never know until you try with these kind of things. Most of the time it’s dried on left over fabric softener.
This approach didn't work for me. I have a top loader GE GTW460 model. I thought I followed your instructions to the tee. At the beginning of your video, I heard you say to pull out the "knob", however that is not an option on my machine. My machine doesn't have pull-out style knobs - they're all twist-style knobs. I kept my machine lid open while my machine filled with hot water. Once the water stopped, I poured in 10 scoops of Oxi clean and I poured one pot full of hot water in my machine. After I poured the pot of hot water in my machine, I let it run for about 5 minutes and then I opened the lid, so the machine would stop, so that the Oxi solution could soak for 6 hours. About an hour later, I looked in my machine and all the water had drained out! If I had closed the lid, my machine would've have continued to run. I paid over $15 for my tub of Oxi and was very disappointed that all the water had drained in under an hour. Any ideas on why this happened? I found the user guide to my machine online (I live in an apartment rental). My machine will "automatically cancel and drain when water is present and the lid is left open for 15 minutes or the unit is left in a paused state for 24 hours with the lid closed". Folks please read your user guide before following the instructions in this YT video to see how your machine functions.
I ran it through a strainer to see what the results would be. Honestly, it’s probably a good idea to run it through a strainer just to avoid getting the gunk in your washer drain line. I took a 5 gallon bucket, as the bucket filled, I’d turn the washer off, dump the bucket and then repeat until the washer was empty.
I ran this cycle once and I still have black gunk in my washing machine. How many more times do I need to do this to get rid of all the black gunk? Is there a more economical way of doing this?
You may watch a video on how to remove the inner drum. Depending on the type of wash you have, it could be easy or difficult. If it’s easy that is by far the best way to clean a washer, because the black dunk sticks just behind the inner drum and on the plastic of the outer drum. It falls right off when you scrub it or even easier pressure wash it.
This is tricky, because I had a washer lock up and have to put into reset to get it working again after attempting to fill it all the way to the top with water and unplug it so it does not drain. If you are comfortable with doing a recalibration you could try that if you’re not, it may not be a good idea.
I have heard that using vinegar could potentially break down and rubber gaskets or seals. Not sure how much truth there is to that, but something to take into account. That's the very reason I've never used vinegar in my washibg machine.
@@terrapinflyer273 I most likely doubt that. You can do most cleaning with baking soda and vinegar and I doubt big corporations want you to know that. Many people use white vinegar as fabric softner.
I’ve had nothing but trouble trying to figure out what the strength of OxiClean is. I’ve seen test where it says it’s 2% and I have seen where people are claiming it’s over 30%. Short answer is, I’m not sure. I think it’s probably higher than the percentage you can buy at Walmart in the pharmacy area. But I’m not sure.
Bottom Line - On top loader machines, always leave the LID OPEN in between washings. Period. The moisture cannot dry fast when the lid is closed. That moisture will turn to mold and/or mildew. When you wash your clothes you will be washing them with that mold and/or mildew. The lid most remain open in between use. For that reason, I would never buy a front-loader.
True some machines have moisture problems, especially front loader washers. They’ve made some improvements to a few that will run a fan to dry them out, but most still recommend you have to leave the door open which is rarely done by the consumer. The bigger problem is fabric softener. It’s designed to not wash out and it sticks to the drums, turning black smelly. An extreme situation that even starts flaking off onto clothes.
@@WasherDryerMoney Thank you. We don't use the liquid fabric softener (and now, you have affirmed why we we don't) but we do use the unscented dryer sheets to stop static electricity in the dryer.
You don’t have to use a strainer. I did it in the video to show how much came out of this dirty washer. It’s probably not a bad idea just so it doesn’t clog up a drain if it’s a whole lot of buildup. But for normal cleaning it’s probably not a problem.
I don't have that much oxiclean right now... However, I have 2 large bottles of peroxide. I have 1½ gal of vinegar and I have a few boxes of baking soda. If anyone sees this and has a good option, please reply. Thank you!!
Sorry I haven’t made it yet. I probably will in the next few months. Wife got pregnant and life got crazy. The problem is newer washers, like to drain them self automatically as a child safety feature. And sometimes if you unplug them while they’re full of water, it confuses the computer board in the washer. I’m going to do a few experiments to see if I can figure out an easy way to do this. But one thing you could do is follow the instructions from this video until you get to the point of turning the washer off to let it sit and unplug it instead. If it gets confused and starts sending an error code, all you have to do is put the washer in re-calibrate mode and I have a video on that it’s pretty easy.
Yeah, I mentioned that in the beginning of the video some of the newer washers like to drain them self automatically after a few minutes. One workaround is to unplug the machine after it agitates. The issue with that is sometimes, not very often but sometimes it will make the washer lock up like a cell phone not wanting to do anything. It’s basically because it’s confusing the control board by unplugging it in the middle of a wash cycle. There’s an easy fix if it happens you just re-calibrate the machine. I have a video on that.
Hello my new content creator friend. I'm considering buying and re-selling a Craigslist - Samsung Washer. Here is what the seller is saying: "Samsung washer good shape 5 years old runs good , NEEDS SHOCKS, but runs good $ 75.00" What do you recommend? Thanks, Tom
I’m not a big Samsung fan, but if it actually is true, and it’s just the shocks, you might be able to make some money on it. I would recommend starting with the regular simple top load washers and filter out the top dryers.
My mom has had nothing but trouble with her Samsung washer. Rust on the inside, nothing gets clean even on heavy duty, wash cycle runs forever! It drove me crazy last time I did laundry for her. My old washer takes like 15 mins, has an old style agitator. Actually gets things clean... Hers ran for literally over an hour and a half! Took things out if the dryer and they smelled just horrible. The leveling feet are stripped on it too. Made out of plastic. My advice? Send it back to Samsung and make them deal with it.
I’m actually trying to figure this out and I’m not 100% sure how much hundred peroxide is in one scoop of Oxsee clean per gallon of water. There’s lots of answers but they’re all over the board.
After you fill it with hot water, add OxiClean, which turns into Hydrin peroxide. Then agitate and turn the machine off, and let it sit for at least six hours. For most newer washers, this will not work well because they like to automatically drain after about 30 minutes as a child safety feature. But most older washers that are smelly and dirty this will work on.
It’s best of you to take the machine apart and clean it, but most people don’t have the tools or abilities to do that. The buildup that comes off is mainly Fabric softener buildup and lint.
He uses hot water to "clean" with...... If you'll use hot water for towels and bedding at minimum once per week and keep the lid open - all the mold smell goes away. And i live in hard water mountain water country!
I think that is the "new" washer that I have.... it is deceptively large. Mine take a long time to fill though, but the wife loves all the crap she can cram in there.
Careful putting too much in these type of washers. It will wear out the clutch. The good news is the clutch is a pretty cheap part and about an hour worth of labor to fix.
Ok seriously?? I mean you didn’t even show the final results. It was a waste of time to do all of the demonstrating only to never show what a NOT SCRUBBING process gets you. That would be what we came and clicked for. To see if it’s possible and how well does that possibility turn out. You literally closed the lid and showed the gunk you pulled out which we didn’t really need, and didn’t even include at least a picture of the BEFORE and the AFTER result. What’s the point??? Most could’ve figured oxy clean might work but SEEING it work is what we came in to see. What a waste of time 🙄

Do you have a video for new machines? Please post. Thnx!
Help! I can't find your 2nd video about cleaning a newer washing machine.
Have you made a video for the newer style washers? I thought that maybe I could figure out this method with our washer but it drained all the water just like you said.
I will soon.
Please do!
@@WasherDryerMoney any updates on the newer style washers? We keep getting some kind of clumps on our clothes after each cycle. Im wondering if this might help.
Is there a video of cleaning inside/out, with tools and taking it apart? Thanks
Great to see you back!!!
Thanks
i think my kenmore is from the 80s or 90s and still works. i think my clothes aren't getting clean though. id rather keep this thing that was built to last, and just clean it, rather than buy some new junk that's gonna fall apart in a few years.
Can you make one that shows how to deep clean a front load washer? Thanks.
Definitely.
I can't seem to find your video for the newer style machines.
What is the model #.i have the same washer but no model # (bought it used ). Cant order parts.Thanks.
Did you ever make that new video??? I need it ASAP!! Emergency!!
My machine will "automatically cancel and drain when water is present and the lid is left
open for 15 minutes or the unit is left in a paused state for 24 hours with the lid closed". Folks please read your user guide before following the instructions in this YT video to see how your machine functions.
Because you opened the lid. Do not do that. Hit the button to pause the cycle.
Same thing happened to me but I now know the trick.
What do you mean at the end by “ran it through a strainer”? How do you strain the stuff out?
I ran it through a strainer to see what the results would be. Honestly, it’s probably a good idea to run it through a strainer just to avoid getting the gunk in your washer drain line.
I took a 5 gallon bucket, as the bucket filled, I’d turn the washer off, dump the bucket and then repeat until the washer was empty.
Oh boy that’s a lot of work! The gpm flowing out the drain hose is insane!
Could you share how you do that? I hear what you're sayingbut there are a lot of steps missing to know how to do that. Thanks! @@WasherDryerMoney
How do I clean one that drains ifself?
This is tricky, because I had a washer lock up and have to put into reset to get it working again after attempting to fill it all the way to the top with water and unplug it so it does not drain. If you are comfortable with doing a recalibration you could try that if you’re not, it may not be a good idea.
My washing machine is newer. Can’t fill it to the top. This won’t work for me.
For best results take it apart
True
I use oxiclean plus citric acid and vinegar all together...maybe a bit of overkill ??
Maybe lol
Run them individually because the oxiclean is basic citric acid as well as vinegar are acidic.
Yeah, probably a good idea to run all that separately. It’s never good idea to mix things.
If you want to use liquid hydrogen peroxide, how much do you add.
@@WasherDryerMoney Using the typical 3% hydrogen peroxide, how much, as in the amount (1 cup, 2 cups) should be used?
You are my SHERO!!
Glad to help
Whats the strainer process. I never heard of this before
You don’t have to use a strainer. I did it in the video to show how much came out of this dirty washer. It’s probably not a bad idea just so it doesn’t clog up a drain if it’s a whole lot of buildup. But for normal cleaning it’s probably not a problem.
I’d like to know as well. He responded to a different comment about a 5 gal bucket but I still don’t follow the straining process
I don't have that much oxiclean right now...
However, I have 2 large bottles of peroxide.
I have 1½ gal of vinegar and I have a few boxes of baking soda.
If anyone sees this and has a good option, please reply. Thank you!!
Question I have taken a risk and bought for $275.09 an out of box GE dryer and no warranty! It doesn't work at all😱😱😱 what might be the problem?
Check the door switch first.
Some GE dryers have a automatic cut off switch if the belt is broken.
Thank you
Glad to help
It may works for older models like yours but for new models I don't see how.
Trying this today 😊
Where is the video for the newer washers
Thank you.
Glad to help!
I just bought a old washer machine from theft store now im worried being dirty
K I filled mine up put all the stuff in and my water disappeared 😮 😂🤦♀️what am I doing wrong!! Don’t laugh … lol we are learning right.. plz help
Is there a filter if so where👍
Hello my new content creator friend.
I'm considering buying and re-selling a Craigslist - Samsung Washer.
Here is what the seller is saying:
"Samsung washer good shape 5 years old runs good , NEEDS SHOCKS, but runs good $ 75.00"
What do you recommend?
When you sell washer and dryers out of your shop, do you charge a sales tax?
This might be a better question for the Facebook group.
how much hydrogen peroxide?
I’m actually trying to figure this out and I’m not 100% sure how much hundred peroxide is in one scoop of Oxsee clean per gallon of water. There’s lots of answers but they’re all over the board.
It would be cheaper to buy the tablets
Haha this is for when the tabs aren’t enough.
What city do you live in?
I have no home
Set that agitation speed to fast… you need as much cleaning power as possible…
Nice
@@WasherDryerMoney should have set it to high at the beginning instead of low then high
When do you add the hydrogen peroxide?
After you fill it with hot water, add OxiClean, which turns into Hydrin peroxide.
Then agitate and turn the machine off, and let it sit for at least six hours.
For most newer washers, this will not work well because they like to automatically drain after about 30 minutes as a child safety feature. But most older washers that are smelly and dirty this will work on.
I just bought the oxiclean🤣
That's really not good it probably push all that for the pump I have seen pumps stopped up with that stuff before
It’s best of you to take the machine apart and clean it, but most people don’t have the tools or abilities to do that.
The buildup that comes off is mainly Fabric softener buildup and lint.
He uses hot water to "clean" with......
If you'll use hot water for towels and bedding at minimum once per week and keep the lid open - all the mold smell goes away.
And i live in hard water mountain water country!
Interesting
I think that is the "new" washer that I have.... it is deceptively large. Mine take a long time to fill though, but the wife loves all the crap she can cram in there.
Careful putting too much in these type of washers. It will wear out the clutch. The good news is the clutch is a pretty cheap part and about an hour worth of labor to fix.
Off topic, but this can’t be his real hairstyle 😂😂😂😂
Lol extreme needed a haircut.
Baking soda is better
You look just like Bill Clinton
Ok seriously?? I mean you didn’t even show the final results. It was a waste of time to do all of the demonstrating only to never show what a NOT SCRUBBING process gets you. That would be what we came and clicked for. To see if it’s possible and how well does that possibility turn out. You literally closed the lid and showed the gunk you pulled out which we didn’t really need, and didn’t even include at least a picture of the BEFORE and the AFTER result. What’s the point???
Most could’ve figured oxy clean might work but SEEING it work is what we came in to see. What a waste of time 🙄
