Jason,thanks again for your wonderful video tutorials,but I have to say there must be more to it than you tell.I have practised for about 2 months now and have made ZERO progress.I don't want to start thinking there is something wrong with me but when I say zero progress,I really mean less than zero.I mean I'm actually getting worse (not better)I have never been able to ruffle shuffle and although it makes no sense I'm starting to think there must be something I'm not seeing here.I have always been clumsy with cards but always thought with hard work I could overcome this, but despite calming myself, relaxing and starting again it just does no good.Maybe if I left it for a couple of weeks and started anew it could get better, but I worry that I might be reinforcing bad habits by continuing; obviously I have hit a wall here but I'm finding it very depressing, being something I love to learn.I'm not asking you to hold my hand or anything but maybe you have come across this kind of thing yourself and can offer some suggestions (apart from go jump)

Thank you! You taught me how to shuffle cards when I thought I’d never be able too. It took a lot of practice and I had to start out with less cards, but I can shuffle now! I honestly really appreciate you!
The first tutorial already helped a lot with the shuffling and was really well explained. My issue now is mostly with the bridge at the end. When I do this, the cards don't beautifully cascade down, but immediatly collapse into one pile as soon as I release them the slightest bit. Did I put too much tension on the arch? To few? Did I release my fingers the wrong way on the bottom? Would really appreciate some tips :)
It's fine actually. I practiced a lot since writing this comment and what helped me was a) making them shuffle together in smaller packs by bending the arch more and practicing the release a lot, b) having them overlap a bit less when finished with the arch and c) making sure I don't start the bridge slowly/carefully after pushing it up, but confidentally putting my fingers down and steady it all
Being a guitar player I definitely know the really good feeling of getting something after practicing a bunch. After 10 mins of practicing I almost have it! I’m gonna practice everyday until I get it, I’ve always wanted to be able to shuffle this way and it feels cool being close to doing it. Thanks!
Thank you!! I'm shuffling "Oracle Cards", which are much bigger than the standard deck! But I got the riffle shuffle to work a couple times!! Cool! (Now I have to rest my hands!!) Great job teaching this! It's all about technique!
When i watched your first video, I am like every youtube genre has one channel that's perfect like you carefully explained everything and I felt, OH! found that perfect channel in first try. It gives a link of 2nd video in description and I am like yeah I need to watch it no way I am gonna learn this. When I came here I saw OMG Whata development in just a year And you said go watch the first video so I practiced the shuffle and they were coming in chunks so I came back to this video and turned out I was placing the thumbs perpendicular to cards. Didn't catch it in first video so thanks. When you said explode, I laughed so hard and I was like he seems familiar to someone else. And the smile, the acting of explosion, the expression. Then I realised, "Ryan Reynolds". nice work, keep it up.
This even works with Magic the Gathering Cards. At Friday night magic I noticed several Magic players doing this shuffle. Needless to say I was intimidated and knew I needed to learn. I've been watching your videos and I have to say I am really picking this up. I feel more connected to the cards now and have become a better Magic the Gathering player thanks to you!!

Your videos really helped me learn how to shuffle. After just 3 days I've pretty much mastered this form of shuffling. Another tip: If your cards are still releasing in clumps, take it slow, examine your thumb placement, and release slowly. If you try it slowly this will really help and eventually you can speed it up! I experienced no issue with my cards bending even doing so, just be cautious that that could be a problem.
I really want to learn the full 360 fan along with that crazy one where the card returns to the deck after being placed down. Seen that move in your intro forever and always wondered what's going on there. Please show us the way Masta
One tip i heard on the first vid that made all the difference for me was to focus on the exact finger, palm positioning and mimic it almost perfect to the vid, once i did this immediate change, cheers man quality vids
Just a bit of input here, as someone who was not only self taught to shuffle cards before the days of UA-cam tutorials, but has done so primarily on Pokemon and Magic the Gathering cards, you're right, they are absolutely different to standard playing cards. Their dimensions are pretty close to identical (all the way down to thickness), but while they have a coating on them, it isn't a coating made to improve grip on the card (which is why even when people don't care about preserving their cards they will still often sleeve their cards in textured sleeves). Also, it's been a while since I've handled regular playing cards, but as I recall most trading card games have somewhat flimsier cards. Shuffling trading cards can certainly be done (I've been doing it fairly regularly for about the past 22 years or so), but if people want to do card tricks, I think you're right to recommend standard playing cards. I'm not a magician, so I can't speak from experience, but I feel like learning with regular playing cards provides greater versatility for developing new techniques and acts. Those are just my two cents, though. If people want to come up with tricks or techniques designed to work with trading cards, more power to them. I'd certainly be willing to try to pick up a new trick or two to break up the monotony of shuffling.
Also, as far as the coating on the cards go, I'm pretty sure it's also a thinner coating than on regular playing cards. Also a bit of a rant here, but certain cards have a slightly different thickness and weight, due to being foiled. Foil cards are constructed by essentially having the basic card, but before printing the face onto it, typically applying a thing foil layer to the card, then printing over the foil, excluding ink in more places and to a greater degree to make the foil reflect light, giving it the shine. (Or, at least as someone who's deconstructed hundreds of cards, stripping the ink off of them so that I can apply my own custom designs to them, that's usually what I've witnessed) Granted, some cards are different, even within the same game. See, if you strip the ink off of some Magic the Gathering cards it will leave the foil layer, while some will just leave a high gloss blank white card. While this is only speculation, that may mean that some foil cards may use some sort of reflective material that's less resilient than foil, causing it to melt away when exposed to acetone. So anyway, my point was supposed to be that cards from trading card games tend to be a lot less consistent, which would probably impact someones ability to perform higher difficulty tricks. If I end up trying to learn any fancy card tricks in the future, I'd probably use regular cards to avoid the frustration of cards that don't want to cooperate with you, seemingly at random.
Hi Jason,Thanks for reading my moans and groans:just to thank you again and say that in the last few days I have noticed a 40per cent improvement in my mangling of the riffle,and now get about 8 or 9 clumps,and twice or so over the weekend I've had a quite good result.Crikey,I'm glad I kept up the practice.This must be amusing to some but I tend to aim high so I guess I should be glad.The mere fact that you made a second video has inspired me to continue and although it's not everything I imagined I still enjoy working at it.Million monkeys at a million typewriters succeed eventually so the more times I do it I might strike it lucky and then back engineer the muscle memory.I don't think I will be the performer type,but I get a lot of fun out of doing it for it's own sake.Keep posting as much as possible and thanks again.
Have been practicing for 1 hour now and notice that I'm getting better every try. Sometimes I still have trouble with big chunks of cards and the bridge isn't going really smooth yet, but I keep practicing (after my hands stop hurting :P). It's really fun and addicting to try to master shuffling skills.
I may be the only one who does that, but I dont like the finger curled on top of the packets when you riffle them together, so I do the riffling motion like the anaconda dribbling. I think that massively helps avoiding the bend and I personally things that looks cooler😂 Teach the deck flip. I still can't do that, either the top or the bottom card always shoots out, which is a nice reveal, but massively annoying when you just want a whole flip.
You know what's funny... I started experimenting with doing that recently too! Just a couple weeks ago. I couldn't really see some advantage to doing it that way vs the original. So I just didn't think to mention it. But it's funny to hear you say that. For me, I don't mind bending the cards, because actually when you've been doing lots of LePaul Spreads or Shooting the cards.... then it's nice to bend the cards "back into shape" through rigorous riffle shuffles face up and face down. To average out any weird un-even bends that occurred from LePaul or even pressure fans. Deck flip! ok your vote has been counted!! :) I also have this issue where a card will shoot off sometimes... it seems like an older deck is more likely for that cards to all stick together. Also, I've seen an alternative finger position elsewhere... so I might try that first and see which version I like best before given my tutorial for it. :) Thanks for your comment!

Love the videos, the first video helped so much and this one ironed out all the little issues I was having, still getting there but it’s all in the practice couple of weeks of doing this consistently and I’ll have it down! hey, fellow magician here. i used to do magic for like 8 years with bicycle, i changed to copag 310 2 years ago and nowadays i use the for a few tricks in shows. i‘d highly recommend giving them a try. copags are a little thicker but they last a lot longer than bicycle in my opinion.
Nice video!!! I would say go for the Over hand shuffle, it's very useful in the long run, but let see what the masses want. 😅 By the way one thing that i do and it helped me alot in the beginning was to warm up my hands before starting any handling( stretching a little bit the fingers, rotating the wrists) stuff like that. Obviously first tutorial was amazing, this one helped me even more! I have found that it's a bit easier to shuffle by slightly shifting the deck or well, half deck away or towards you, basically making a little ramp. Basically just lets me feel the cards individually easier

I learned the first part fairly quickly from your first video. This video actually explained why I couldn't get the bridge shuffle like 98% of the tries. I have plastic cards and they are really slippery and feel almost impossible to handle, for a beginner especially. Now, a part of me wants to just listen and buy better suited cards, but another part of me thinks I just need patience and practice to overcome this challenge 🥲😂
Thanks again! Thoughts for newer videos: - one-handed cut - One-handed rotary cut - One-handed rotary shuffle - All the other items you suggested. I used to be able to do all those items listed when younger; but perhaps with older and more flexible cards -- a "couple of days" to break in cards is not enough.
After these great 2 videos, there is only one thing left, that i still need to figure out myself. The initial 4-5 cards from the bottom still clump together, even if i do a strong L-shape. If i bend them a tiny bit more, i'm slowly getting into an U-shape 😂 But first i need a break, because i ignored 1 tip and damaged my hands. I always liked my soft hands, but right now i hate them 😋
I learned to riffle shuffle pretty much exclusively from your first video. It's probably the best tutorial on the subject on youtube...and i watched a few. The card flying back or that pressure fan would be awesome for the next tutorial.

This helped a lot, I had my thumbs going in the wrong direction. Once I corrected that, I got it in a few tries. I haven't tried the bridge yet, but I can just push the cards together so I probably won't learn it right now. Thanks for the help!
A huge thanks. I never imagined I could do this shuffle. This additional video really helped. For some reason I missed the part about the thumbs being parallel to the side of the cards.
They all sound like good tutorials to watch but if I have to pick just one, my vote would be that last one where you spread the cards on the table and had some lifted and you could slide your hand across them moving the lifted part back and forth.

Great! My niece is learning to shuffle cards, and I've been thinking of showing her your first video, this one might help even more. I'd like tutorials on all of them, but since you're taking suggestions, the one-handed cut is one I've tried and can't seem to get right. It always feels like my hands are too small (which is weird since my hands are huge)

I'm a tarot reader and I'm planning a UA-cam channel soon, and I definitely need a more professional and aesthetically pleasing way to shuffle instead Chaos of flying cards around ...Some time ago I watched similar videos on other channels, but I could not understand exactly what mistakes I make and I was desperate that I would never learn how to shuffle. Actually Jason, the only cards I have are Piatnik(bridge) cards(made in Austria.they were the best ones I could find at the local bookshop(Auckland-New Zealand)We are just emerging from covid lockdown,and I will try to find some USPCC cards soon..Unfortunately I don't have instagram or face book but already I've noticed a(gradual) improvement in my practice sessions so I'm really thankful for your help and appreciative of your attention so I won't take up too much of your time but thanks again and keep those vids coming on UA-cam and I'll keep working to improve.
I guess I'm just hopeless lol. I have improved watching your videos but I still have a problem when arching them at the end. They are either already mashed together, or they undo the shuffle completely.
Does that happen every time you snap your fingers? That could come in handy... "Jason, we need to talk." **snaps fingers** "Ah, c'mon!" :) I couldn't shuffle without a table. After this lovely tutorial, I think I stand a better chance. Also, good use of every single transition your editing software is capable of! I love this place.

No Jason,I still can't get anything more than about three clumps of cards:I've tried everything you suggested on both videos and things just got worse.I thank you for trying to help but there must be something else I'm missing here...After about three weeks going over it every day I'm just getting more frustrated;I don't blame you or anyone else but I've always been a butter fingers.Then I thought maybe I'm being negative and convincing myself that I'm wrong to sabotage my own efforts,so I visualised and paused and started again...nothing..even worse results so as I say I don't blame anyone and don't expect anyone to do anything but just thought I should let you know.So please continue with your vids because I enjoy trying even if I can't do anything right.There is a lot of fun to be had just watching good handling and I encourage you to.carry on.

Thank you for at least trying to help,but I have never been able to handle cards properly and after watching your video I still can't.Not your fault .I have been playing guitar for more than 50years but still cannot do what others seem to do as beginners.Never the less I am able to play up to a reasonable standard just by sheer bloody mindedness and a refusal to give up.I'm not holding my breath, though, maybe I have the clumsy gene.It was more than 30years ago that I first tried one handed pass move and I'm still trying so maybe in 30 years I'll be able to do what is after all not that advanced a move as shuffling. Hi Jason,Thanks for reading my moans and groans:just to thank you again and say that in the last few days I have noticed a 40per cent improvement in my mangling of the riffle,and now get about 8 or 9 clumps,and twice or so over the weekend I've had a quite good result.Crikey,I'm glad I kept up the practice.This must be amusing to some but I tend to aim high so I guess I should be glad.The mere fact that you made a second video has inspired me to continue and although it's not everything I imagined I still enjoy working at it.Million monkeys at a million typewriters succeed eventually so the more times I do it I might strike it lucky and then back engineer the muscle memory.I don't think I will be the performer type,but I get a lot of fun out of doing it for it's own sake.Keep posting as much as possible and thanks again.
Have been practicing for 1 hour now and notice that I'm getting better every try. Sometimes I still have trouble with big chunks of cards and the bridge isn't going really smooth yet, but I keep practicing (after my hands stop hurting :P). It's really fun and addicting to try to master shuffling skills.

I may be the only one who does that, but I dont like the finger curled on top of the packets when you riffle them together, so I do the riffling motion like the anaconda dribbling. I think that massively helps avoiding the bend and I personally things that looks cooler😂
Teach the deck flip. I still can't do that, either the top or the bottom card always shoots out, which is a nice reveal, but massively annoying when you just want a whole flip.
You know what's funny... I started experimenting with doing that recently too! Just a couple weeks ago. I couldn't really see some advantage to doing it that way vs the original. So I just didn't think to mention it. But it's funny to hear you say that. For me, I don't mind bending the cards, because actually when you've been doing lots of LePaul Spreads or Shooting the cards.... then it's nice to bend the cards "back into shape" through rigorous riffle shuffles face up and face down. To average out any weird un-even bends that occurred from LePaul or even pressure fans. Deck flip! ok your vote has been counted!! :) I also have this issue where a card will shoot off sometimes... it seems like an older deck is more likely for that cards to all stick together. Also, I've seen an alternative finger position elsewhere... so I might try that first and see which version I like best before given my tutorial for it. :) Thanks for your comment!

Love the videos, the first video helped so much and this one ironed out all the little issues I was having, still getting there but it’s all in the practice couple of weeks of doing this consistently and I’ll have it down! hey, fellow magician here. i used to do magic for like 8 years with bicycle, i changed to copag 310 2 years ago and nowadays i use the for a few tricks in shows. i‘d highly recommend giving them a try. copags are a little thicker but they last a lot longer than bicycle in my opinion.

I would say go for the Over hand shuffle, it's very useful in the long run, but let see what the masses want. 😅
By the way one thing that i do and it helped me alot in the beginning was to warm up my hands before starting any handling( stretching a little bit the fingers, rotating the wrists) stuff like that.

And then having taught that... I can move onto other things like overhand shuffle control. And then be able to teach a few simple tricks involving it.... HMMM. :)

I have found that it's a bit easier to shuffle by slightly shifting the deck or well, half deck away or towards you, basically making a little ramp.
Basically just lets me feel the cards individually easier

I watched this several times and making my thumbs parallel with the cards is like trying to make a V with four fingers for the first time😂

I learned the first part fairly quickly from your first video. This video actually explained why I couldn't get the bridge shuffle like 98% of the tries. I have plastic cards and they are really slippery and feel almost impossible to handle, for a beginner especially. Now, a part of me wants to just listen and buy better suited cards, but another part of me thinks I just need patience and practice to overcome this challenge 🥲😂

I used to be able to do all those items listed when younger; but perhaps with older and more flexible cards -- a "couple of days" to break in cards is not enough.

After these great 2 videos, there is only one thing left, that i still need to figure out myself. The initial 4-5 cards from the bottom still clump together, even if i do a strong L-shape. If i bend them a tiny bit more, i'm slowly getting into an U-shape 😂 But first i need a break, because i ignored 1 tip and damaged my hands. I always liked my soft hands, but right now i hate them 😋

I learned to riffle shuffle pretty much exclusively from your first video. It's probably the best tutorial on the subject on youtube...and i watched a few. The card flying back or that pressure fan would be awesome for the next tutorial.

This helped a lot, I had my thumbs going in the wrong direction. Once I corrected that, I got it in a few tries. I haven't tried the bridge yet, but I can just push the cards together so I probably won't learn it right now. Thanks for the help!

A huge thanks. I never imagined I could do this shuffle. This additional video really helped. For some reason I missed the part about the thumbs being parallel to the side of the cards.
I learned how to do this from a neighbor when I was 6. Not saying I'm better than this tutorial. It's just the most interesting fact about me. 😅

They all sound like good tutorials to watch but if I have to pick just one, my vote would be that last one where you spread the cards on the table and had some lifted and you could slide your hand across them moving the lifted part back and forth.

I must have a bad deck or big thumbs because I still get some clumps. Very few but they're noticeably there. Parallel thumb placement helped a bunch.

I'm a tarot reader and I'm planning a UA-cam channel soon, and I definitely need a more professional and aesthetically pleasing way to shuffle instead Chaos of flying cards around ...Some time ago I watched similar videos on other channels, but I could not understand exactly what mistakes I make and I was desperate that I would never learn how to shuffle. So, thank you again, the things here are explained perfectly even for lost causes like me...:D

Actually Jason, the only cards I have are Piatnik(bridge) cards(made in Austria.they were the best ones I could find at the local bookshop(Auckland-New Zealand)We are just emerging from covid lockdown,and I will try to find some USPCC cards soon..Unfortunately I don't have instagram or face book but already I've noticed a(gradual) improvement in my practice sessions so I'm really thankful for your help and appreciative of your attention so I won't take up too much of your time but thanks again and keep those vids coming on UA-cam and I'll keep working to improve.

I have improved watching your videos but I still have a problem when arching them at the end. They are either already mashed together, or they undo the shuffle completely.

I couldn't shuffle without a table. After this lovely tutorial, I think I stand a better chance. Also, good use of every single transition your editing software is capable of! I love this place.

No Jason,I still can't get anything more than about three clumps of cards:I've tried everything you suggested on both videos and things just got worse.I thank you for trying to help but there must be something else I'm missing here...After about three weeks going over it every day I'm just getting more frustrated;I don't blame you or anyone else but I've always been a butter fingers.Then I thought maybe I'm being negative and convincing myself that I'm wrong to sabotage my own efforts,so I visualised and paused and started again...nothing..even worse results so as I say I don't blame anyone and don't expect anyone to do anything but just thought I should let you know.So please continue with your vids because I enjoy trying even if I can't do anything right.There is a lot of fun to be had just watching good handling and I encourage you to.carry on.
One thing you don't mention explicitly but you do it and it helped me is just practicing one hand at a time. Not a complete shuffle.

Possibly... but I prefer paper cards. I haven't tried to experiment much with plastic cards personally :)
I can do it perferctly the wrong way (card face showing up) haha. I think my cards are cut in a weird way or something. Still working on the second part but awesome videos man thanks!.

Thank you for at least trying to help,but I have never been able to handle cards properly and after watching your video I still can't.Not your fault .I have been playing guitar for more than 50years but still cannot do what others seem to do as beginners.Never the less I am able to play up to a reasonable standard just by sheer bloody mindedness and a refusal to give up.I'm not holding my breath, though, maybe I have the clumsy gene.It was more than 30years ago that I first tried one handed pass move and I'm still trying so maybe in 30 years I'll be able to do what is after all not that advanced a move as shuffling. Bless you for taking on monkey fisted card handlers like me,your good intention is more than enough
