Want to know which magic books to buy? How to get started in magic for beginners? Or perhaps more advanced magic books to extend your knowledge? In this video I share my favorite magic trick books, which I have purchased over the years. I still have more back at home in Texas, but when I really had to narrow it down... THESE are the top 20 magic trick books I chose to pay to have shipped halfway around the world to where I am now. I discuss books that teach easy magic for beginners, as well as more advanced books, and additionally books on magic theory. It's really a great idea to learn some presentation & magic theory after you have have learned some magic tricks you can actually perform for people. Only then do the lessons on theory make more sense as you read. I mostly focus on card magic tricks, but I do also reference other magic categories as well such as coin magic and mentalism. See below for the list of books... not in the order I presented, but categorized!

    --- PHYSICAL Props ---
    Recommended playing cards: amzn.to/2ELzLIr
Close-up card mat for perform & practice: amzn.to/35RKdds
    --- Camera / Recording Equipment ---
** I personally use these items below for filming my videos!
📷 My Main Camera (fast autofocus): amzn.to/2MwhPEA
🎥 Lens for "talking to the camera" (great bokeh): amzn.to/2MtgAWQ
💡 Powerful Light (helps video quality): amzn.to/2QOTFcw
👍 Soft Box (for that nice soft light on your face): amzn.to/2NriW99
    🎙 Microphone with arm: amzn.to/33xgV3x
    Extra equipment
    🔵 Tripod for camera: amzn.to/2U1O8Ri
    🔵 Light Stand: amzn.to/3aawnoM
This light stand is kinda not sturdy enough because the light and soft box are so large; the whole thing can tip over easily. But it's what I use! 😆 Or you can perhaps find another light stand that is rated to hold more weight. Or just put something heavy (like sandbags) onto the bottom to lower the center of gravity.

I absolutely love and recommend "Close up card magic" by Harry Lorayne. It's a great starter book with really good effects. As an intermediate card book I really like "The Collected works of Alex Elmsley" I have volume 1, I know there is a volume 2 as well. Wow, there's some great stuff in there. My best "hidden gem" book, because I have no idea if it's still in print or available anywhere, is "The commercial magic of JC Wagner". Oh My Gosh, if you can find it and you're intermediate to advanced, just get it.

Hey Billy!! Glad to get a comment from you again. And so glad you enjoyed this video. I kinda figured it wouldn't get that many views.... but I had these books shipped all the way to me... and when I was about to open the box.... I figured it was too good an opportunity to pass up, and might as well record the process.... and also put amazon affiliate links... which 100% was an afterthought 😆 But yeah it was fun to share my favorite books that I've collected over the years. And it was fun testing out filming in this part of my flat using a new lighting set up. I was curios how it was turn out. I'm doing good! Ukraine is pretty much same as everywhere except we are required to wear masks while outside legally. Which is annoying. :) But pretty much life as normal for me since I'm only working from home and can't be fired because I don't have a boss! But I am sad for all those employees who lost their jobs during this time!! I hope your wife is staying safe also, working there on the front line. Probably everything will be fine though! :)

Hey, thanks for this video! You do a great job with all of your vids!
If I am correct, you are from the US, but currently staying in Ucraine?
    I always wonder:
I am German, and to me it looks as if the 'magicians' community is much more alive in the US than here in Europe - it starts off that even finding closeup matts is rather cumbersome - there are few opportunities.
And it does not end with actual magician performances - I have been looking for magicians perform for 2 years now and hardly found anything.
From your point of view - is magic more vivid in the US or am I just too inept to discover what we got? How is the situation in the Ucraine?
Anyhow, thanks a lot for all your vids - I always enjoy it watching and they helped me quite a bit master the dullness of corona isolation ;)

Thanks Michael! Yes I'm from the US. And living in Ukraine for the last 2 years. :) I quit my job back in the US and started backpacking around Europe and randomly ended up over here in Ukraine... where I'm trying to make a living from UA-cam videos. :)
Yes I felt like in the US there are more magic meet-ups. More people involved in this hobby/art form. Especially in Ukraine... there are really not many magicians here 😆. But I guess you can just google and see if there is an IBM (International Brotherhood of magicians) club in your country.
For close-up pads... I saw some that looked decent by Murphy's Magic. They may be available on Amazon or PenguinMagic.

As a feedback, as i enjoy your content in general: Lack of preparation in the video is striking. I cannot stop the impression that that video is made ad hoc, quickly to fill up affilate links. Lack of good light management kills books presentation. And also statements like i "did not read it yet" - or - "i did not read it at all" make think that it is not thought through selection of books.

Hey thanks for your feedback. Really the idea of amazon affiliate links was an afterthought, right before I started filming. And actually the whole video concept was an after thought as well! I just received the box of books from the mail after 5 weeks... and was about to open it... when I thought HEY... this could be a fun video, unboxing stuff.. and people get to see which books I was actually WILLING to pay even more money to have shipped to myself from around the world. It means the books that I will actively plan to use and think are valuable. So in a way I was sharing my choices and the time I spent previously researching on discussion boards which books are good to buy (even if I haven't read certain books). In fact, with YT I think it's nice to have some ad-hoc feeling videos which is what I was hoping to accomplish here... to be a little more casual and real-world. The lighting... I probably had too many lights on... and I was actually experimenting with filming in this location of the flat. So it is what it is. But I made sure viewers would be able to see the books, which I think is what counts. Choosing to ad affiliate links right before starting to film.... I think it's fair given I spent a good 15 hours total making this video. Editing takes a lot of time and selecting background music as well. So if I earn $3.00 after a month from affiliate links... I don't think it's the biggest scam in the world. 😆 And these are authentically the books I am using for myself. Not just listing here to make money.

Just kinda the way it is... and I avoid having too many small things out and about. Put stuff in drawers. And also I've only been renting this flat for half a year. Before that I was traveling with only a backpack. So I really was low on the "possessions" department, which helps! :)

I bought Expert Card Technique 30 years ago because my teacher told me to. I didn't understand any of it. Bugger all. I thought this is hopeless I'll never become a card magician. I flipped through it and got to the last chapter: Presentation. This is the first paragraph if my memory serves me well. It read: If you are the sort of person who can just go up to a group of people you have never met and start entertaining them you don't need to read any more. So I closed the book and never looked at it again. Maybe you could check that for me...was a bloody long time ago.

"There is no royal road to geometry." is often attributed to Euclid. And this is more than just a true statement. In fact, there is no royal to any demanding discipline, and magic is no exception. Nonetheless, a great name for a book.
BTW, magic books are quite cheap, judging by the collection from the video. I buy mostly maths and engineering ones. Prices for those start at 100$. Fortunately, it is my employer who foots the bill.

And then there comes an explanation for the "Ukraine issue". To quit software development (I totally get it, software dev is 99% very fucking boring) and try earn money from UA-cam, one had to downshift. Ukraine is quite horrible, but Kiev is quite cheap and it's a big city.
