    Thank you Karen for responding to my questions…will have a watch throughout to your videos on scraps. I have followed gladly piecing scraps on adding machine paper and ended up beautifully as a border for a quilt.
    Thank you Karen for the tips. Happy quilting.♥️♥️♥️

    I found that journaling every day helps me keep track of what I did that day. So often I go along and feel like I'm not accomplishing anything. I can look back and see what happened that day, and it's a lot like looking at a photo album. I try to decorate the page and make it pretty with stickers also.

    This was great! I loved the tip about a better plate for my machine, which is hungry for my HST corners! 🤣 I'm definitely going to get one. And after 7 years of quilting, I still cut bigger and trim down. That cruise sounds amazing! ☀

    SCRAPS... I never have very much. Any from a project are cut as Karen does. Any left from that is either sent to best friend who dies the most amazing scrap Q's or in a small tote for the "house" blocks or just the "round" the, known as garbage. I know not 1 quilter where I now live. Even the quilt shop is not friendly & the guild is less so. I sew 2 / 10 hours 200 Days a year. I tie most for inexpensive sale. I do for 'me', with special fabric. Those I have machine quilted & I have recently rented time on a longarm. I make all sizes for sale, fir me it's queen/king spread size. What happens to them when my life changes, no one I know wants them. So not something I think/ care about. I just do what I love to do. Also, I just re -acquired a floor loom, was weaver for 30 yrs. No time to be bored, too much life to enjoy.

      I love making After Quilts. A woman in my quilt circle said After Quilts make it more difficult for the the quilter. Have you found that an issue?

      I only use flannel for my quilt backs and wash it ahead of time...never had a problem...and it's soft.

    With one inch or smaller scraps, you can make quilted coasters for your mugs, just free style join them, no need to measure accurately, then once you get the size you like, use scrap batting and backing, you can also gift these, or make them bigger as plate coasters

  • @chantald9661
    @chantald9661 Місяць тому +1

    As a suggestion for small scrap pieces, instead of throwing them away, make a small quilted teddy or EPP toys and use them as stuffing and make a donation. Zero waste 😊

  • @julias.8236
    @julias.8236 Місяць тому +3

    About the crumbs... If you have a quilt guild near you, maybe consider donating them. Some people love working wit them and if anybody would still get something out of them it would be sad to trash them in my opinion. On the other hand, if it is too much of a hassle and the stuff weights you down, getting rid of it in the easiest way possible to keep your mental health is relatable, too.
    And regarding working with jeans... I made a rag quilt once. Bottom was jeans and on the top were floral prints. Loved the effect although cutting the edges was a task...

    On the flying geese question...when I have a pattern that I don't want to have a border on or have points on the edges, I do a facing instead of a traditional binding. Works a charm!!

    I make a paper mock-up of the disappearing block that I want to make. Then I cut it like the pattern calls for to see the units. Then, I make the block with my favorite methods.

    When you start a new line of stitches, how do you keep the thread from pulling out of the needle? I’ve been sewing for years, and it still happens one time in five!!

    • @ShadowMoonFarms
      @ShadowMoonFarms Місяць тому +5

      I always hold on to my two threads as I take the first two stitches, pulling it out to the right with my right hand.. It does not pull back and I get no nests underneath. Of course, this means that I have tails of thread to cut off and I do NOT use the automaticc thread cutter on my machine.

    • @JustGetitDoneQuilts
      @JustGetitDoneQuilts  Місяць тому +5

      You just need to make them longer. Do this with your needle in the upper position

    • @rebeccamulkern1051
      @rebeccamulkern1051 Місяць тому +4

      Either make your threads longer by pulling them or use a leader ( a small scrap of fabric folded or with scrap of batting, you use this piece many many times, so you sew on that first then slide your actual piece, super handy when you also know your machine will mangle your piece at the start, I’m probably not explaining it very well)

    • @mcanode78
      @mcanode78 Місяць тому +3

      I have this happen when the take up level is not at the top of the machine. Turn the wheel on you machine until the take up is at the top before you cut your threads from the previous piece. Hanging onto the thread ends also works.

    Karen, you mention the museum quilt display. Have you heard there is a filmmaker who collects quilts? Ken Burns. It caught my attention because it seems rare for anyone with a film career to ever mention something like quilts. I was kinda impressed. Granted he's more of a documentary guy so he appreciates the stories behind things. I always enjoy your chats, thanks!

    I've heard that turn of cloth is the space that the seam takes up once it is opened up. I think that is why some people use the scant seam allowance. I don't like the scant seam allowance. I have all I can do to keep the precise seam allowance Lol.

    Any advice on maintaining the size of a square when snowballing the corners? I’m making heart blocks and when I use an inch square for the top corners, it’s very difficult to achieve a great result, it’s workable but not ideal, and when I then squar the block off, some sides are a bit shorter, despite lining the squares really well
