- SCRAPS STRIPS TO SPLENDOR-MAKING A KING SIZED QUILT FROM A MILLION ZILLION SCRAPS
Do you have a pile of fabric crumbs? These are those tiny pieces that are too small for other scrap projects. In previous videos I have shown you how to sew them onto adding machine tape. In this quilting video those crumbs strips will be turned into blocks and then assembled into a King sized Quilt. So stick with me and I’ll show you how to do it.

7⃣ YEARS IN THE MAKING. I can hardly believe that it's done. And the strips have totally transformed into a quilt. And I love a heavy quilt. Off to test drive it now. 😊
It was so satisfying to watch! Thank you!
well done!
Karen it's just stunning!! 😍, what a mammoth devotion achievement, in time, energy and careful collection of fabric memories, I'm very inspired.. I might just Start by setting myself a task of one adding machine line per month. And see where it takes me. Thank you again for your inspiration 🎉 that really is a celebration quilt 🎉
Thanks Karen my scrap box is large and I’m going to try a version of your quilt I don’t have access to paper tape however I’m going to try well done the quilt is quite an achievement it’s beautiful
Now I am 82 and I have the tape, and a lg. basket of scraps. So I have decided that when I have finished all of my ufos I will do this. LOL. Maybe this will be the one I take to the nursing home? The last project. Have a good day Karen. 🤎ya . From Texes.
I'm so glad to finally see these strips in a finished piece! Bravo and we'll done Karen 🎉
Applause! Standing Ovation! This is a quilt that tells the story of your life and is a treasure.
This is a heirloom quilt Karen. I’m in awe of your bravery to make this.
I’m surprised that my family did not stage an intervention
I so agree! An heirloom for sure!
Congratulations Karen! What a wonderful achievement, and a practical, pretty, and parsimonious (I had a bit of trouble finding a third ‘p’ word😉) heirloom which is the very basis of quilting tradition. You are a star in every way. I’m not a quilter and I love watching your creative process. ⭐️
Holy Smokes! That is an heirloom quality quilt IMHO. I absolutely adore everything about it!
❤️Absolutely fabulous scrap quilt. It resembles a stained glass window. Well done!!! 👍🏼👍🏼
Absolutely STUPENDOUS!!! From a distance, when we can see the entire quilt top, those neutral sashing strips are virtually invisible. Well done in EVERY respect! 🤗💖🎶💐
Wow! I've been watching you all this time! You are a force of nature! Nice to see this quilt come together. ❤
Your were probably with me for the first 10 strips 🤗🤗🤗
Well done, Karen! Many sewists wouldn't bother keeping such small pieces of fabric, but look what you've made out of nothing at all! Imagine all of the warmth that sewists could provide if they all did this.
The love the history aspect of this quilt. The journey of a quilter on display for all to enjoy. Much love from Australia, Karen. Love your videos x
Karen has shown how a bite at a time with persistence you can eat a whole wedding cake and create a Masterpiece! You can talk yourself out of something but you can also talk yourself into it. Just make your current goal realistic. In my 60's I bought a retaining wall "kit". Then I could not find anyone to hire. I worked on it for 15 mins at a time and now it's finished and gorgeous!
👏👏👏 way to go
Although the entire quilt is amazing, I think the coolest part is how you made the side and corner setting triangles. And that you made it an on point layout at all, is super cool, and I would never have even thought of that!
You are truly amazing and you do amazing work! After all these years, you are still so practical, clear, and creative. ❤
Wait, what??? You have an on-point layout chart??? How did I never find that? I’ve actually googled that because I didn’t want to have to do the math. Of course you’ve figured this out and put it together! You’re brilliant.
All the thought that went into those stripy blocks about made my eyes cross!
But the results are stunning! Brava!
I remember when you started the adding tape strips, it was a long, long time ago. It looks brilliant you must be delighted how it’s turned out and so glad it’s finally finished. I’m sure looking at all the fabrics must bring a huge amount of memories and emotions.
It is fun to touch them all and remember where they came from
It’s a living moment quilt! ❤
Straight line quilting was definitely the right choice for the quilt! Absolutely gorgeous!
The sight of the quilt catching the sunlight was just gorgeous, like a stained glass window! Congratulations on completing this massive undertaking!❤
Wow! What an accomplishment... and a beautiful quilt you have to show for all of your work. You have inspired me to start saving my crumbs. I love making scrap quilts, but this is the ultimate scrap quilt! Thanks Karen for showing us how you did this.
Thanks Nancy. It’s one of those things that’s doable one strip at a time.
Oh wow! Karen, that is truly SPECTACULAR! What an epic quilt. Your perseverance is admirable. I love all things "scrappy", from crumbs to granny squares made with yarn. This quilt epitomises the frugal aspect of quilting's humble beginnings. 🙏
Oh Karen, this quilt is so beautiful and so much fun, I just love it. ❤❤❤
Wow. What an achievement with all those tiny scraps. I don’t think I’m that brave to sew a quilt with mine. 👍💕💕
Yeeeah, this is great inspiration for those of us who just…can’t…let…go.
Here is a great name for this amazing quilt.......name it "WOW" !!!
I had a business where we made intricate calico cushions for about 5 years to fit in a certain movement.
And sewing was my first love from the age of 13 because my mother made hideous dresses.
But I had sewing burnout.
I'm always interested in your type of programs, but quilting is too rigid for me.
But this quilt is the most beautiful, a bit rustic and would love to own this type of quilt.
It reminds me of mosaic.
Beautiful
At 73 I knit socks and everybody loves them.
Two years ago, I saw your adding machine tape idea, and I was recovering from knee surgery and missed sewing. I got some cash register tape and started making my own. My thinking was, if I make a mistake, just cut it out and keep going. Well, I ended up making a quilt called "pick up sticks." Crossing 2" straps over each other on each 12" block. It was fun and beautiful. Thank you for a great idea.
Nice idea 👍
That is stunning. I’m hand sewing the binding on my scrap strip quilt now. You have inspired me to sew more strips and copy your design. Imitation is the highest form of flattery.
Thank you Karen for providing such beautiful inspiration
That is awesome. I’m still working on making 10” blocks with my scraps. 84 done, made one charity quilt with 16 of the blocks, using a 2” black sashing and borders. Even made a pillowcase using a couple of the blocks for the edging. I’m sure I’ll get more than 300 more scrappy blocks with the scraps I have left. Thank you for sharing your videos.
So gorgeous!
So many months ago, I watched some of your videos and let you inspire me to take care of all those tons of scraps, small and smaller and tiny .... And....mine is finished, too!
Thank you so much.
I love my scrap quilt!
I think your quilt looks stunning. Congrats on finishing this longtime project. I hope you can enjoy this quilt for many years.
Karen you never fail to amaze me, so impressive, inspiring and beautiful. This is why you have such a huge following. Thanks for all that you do.👍❤️🙂
💥STUNNING! 💥 This is a lovely make Karen!!! I always wondered if the adding machine tape would be hard to "pick" out of the fabric...happy to hear that it was an easy task for you 🤩This is a ROCKSTAR QUILT❤
Your scrap series reminds me of my grandmom's beef roast. First as a nicely sliced roast for Sunday dinner, then slices in gravy for Tuesday dinner, then hash for Friday and bones to soup for Saturday.
Ohhhh Karen!!!!!!!
This quilt is WONDERFUL!!!!!!
This turned out BEAUTIFUL! I can only imagine the sense of accomplishment that you have when you look at Your Masterpiece. Great Job!!!!
Wow! Gorgeous quilt, but what really impresses is the time, thought and persistence it represents. Thank you for sharing.
This is so fantastic, Karen! Such a labor of love and how much fun to see your past quilting projects in every square inch. Love your channel.
You rock Karen….there is no way in hell I will ever have enough scraps to make such a quilt at my age….but I love what you did!
Thank you for making quilting so accessible.
How FUN to see the final product from your scraps!! It's GORGEOUS! Personally I never want to see the fabric again from my quilts so am happy to gift leftovers to others . . . .
I love this quilt so much. It may be my favorite of all the ones I’ve seen you make. It’s so my style! I’ve been making scrap strips for a few years, but I cut the strips from newspaper, since I didn’t have adding machine tape. I got in the habit of doing in between projects as a way to decompress with a little free-styling-no rules, no measuring, just mindless stitching, and we all know how good that feels. I’d been thinking of using them as a scrappy binding, but seeing them in your FABULOUS quilt may inspire a different direction. I’ve learned so much from you since 2021, with your incredible graphics and mathematical calculations. You could be called a Quilt Engineer. TY for taking the time to put together these exceptional videos. They are much more than entertainment. They’re a master class in the how-tos behind the creativity. 🙌
🤗🤗🤗
Fabulous! And, no, I don't have the perseverance to even attempt such a feat, but I certainly admire yours!
It looks amazing and you can't see the sashing strips they just blend in . The backing is spot on too.
Fantastic! I absolutely love how you assembled and finished this one! Congratulations on seeing all those crumbs through to the very end and, as always, thanks for sharing your journey ❤❤❤
Beautiful incredible quilt! Your work on the quilt and your work on the video is amazing, Karen. Thank you for doing what you do for the quilting community.
I have been watching these scrap strips for years, and now it's here. Congratulations on such a beautiful quilt. I love how it almost has a stained glass look. So beautiful. Hugs, Chel 🌸
incredible. what a masterpiece. the professional build quality and design choices make this incredibly disparate fabric collection look cohesive, well controlled, and organized. absolutely stunning
This is a wonderful, colorful, memorable quilt, Karen! You keep and use so many of your small scraps. I usually get rid of any scraps smaller than 2”. We have a wonderful recycling program, Ridwell, which has a category called “Threads”, which will take fabric scraps. So I bundle them into a worn out zip lock bag and toss them in the bag. But now perhaps I’ll start keeping even the smaller ones…. Thanks for another fabulous, informative video!
I’m glad the binding is finally on this one
This is one of the most glorious quilts I’ve ever seen! You did an amazing job on it. How wonderful to have all those memories in one glorious quilt! Thank you for sharing it with us.
It's fantastic! The .5 inch sashing divides it enough to rest your eyes and appreciate all the fabrics. Great job!
Karen! I have been waiting for this…and it’s stunning. My very first quilt was crumb pieced because I am nuts and when I saw the previous adding machine strip video, it spoke to me. It also started a hoard of grocery store receipts, but that is another story. 😂 Your videos have taught me so much over the past few years. Thank you for helping me make the quilts that I want make.
Dear Karen, I've been watching you and subscribed for years. This quilt is amazing! The enormity of it and your perseverance are a testimony of your expertise and bravery ❤. You go girl!!!
Love love love this quilt ! I started quilting when covid hit.....as most people did. I knew i did not want to do a patterned quilt....so i searched in youtube and you were the first that came up with the crumb quilting. i watched your videos and that's what i did, "crumb" quilting. That is all i do and just love it....i've made all kinds of bags with this crumbs and all the recipients of them have just love them also... Thanks for sharing your knowledge with all of us....
Karen, The quilt is amazing! The years to make and the memories you will cherish forever. Love the Tula fabric on the back. It seems appropriate for the quilt.
Hi Karen, I just wanted to let you know that I think that this is the most gorgeous scrap quilt that I ever seen. I love everything about it. I have been subscribed to your channel and I’be been watching your videos. I am a new quilter, working on my first quilt. I’m making the 6 inch size of Moda Blockheads 5. I have referred back to you so many times and I always find the answers to my questions from you. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and for bringing your love of quilting into my life. Hugs and appreciation from Minnesota.❤️
🤗🤗🤗
The enormity of this leaves me in awe. First of all, it takes a lot of projects to get that many scraps. Then to do a king size quilt out of nothing but scraps and crumbs is monumental. Just wow.
Yay! I've been looking forward to you showing off the crumb strip quilt for a long time now! It's so nice!!!!
It’s a masterpiece! How you took all those scraps and made them look intentional is amazing!! Congratulations.😊
Wow! That is so amazing! And you selected the best backing for this as well! You motivate me with every project, Karen! Thank you for sharing!
Picture of the top floating in the garage door: the stained glass effect is absolutely sublime!❤
The first time I hung a quilt there I was just mesmerized by the effect. Now I do it for all my quilts
My favorite quilt, the one that I love to snuggle under on a daily basis, is a crumb quilt made out of all my scraps. I love yours!
Thanks Karen for the info about how you sashed between the rows, it will help me the day I have enough rows to assemble. I can’t imagine how long this whole process took you. Bravo to you!❤
I am totally blown away by your dedication to this project…what a testament to your love for this craft, and a lifetime of using your skills to bless others. It is inspiring to think of all of the projects, work and love that went into each step of this quilt. I can imagine that as you look at it and use it, you will remember times and people on your life that were meaningful and formative to who and where you are now. I hope that I can emulate this in my own quilting journey. Thank you for sharing your heart in this way!
OMG, Karen! What a spectacular quilt! Now I know why I have been saving small crumbs and what I will do with them.
Karen, I LOVE THIS QUILT and how you worked through the process. Love the tips and tricks! ❤🎉
I love that quilt!!! I'm so glad you made a king quilt. That's pretty much all I make or that is the goal. I do have some queen quilts too. Making a king quilt is hard. They get big and heavy and I'm so thankful for every one I finish. Great quilt.
WOW!!! Best scrap quilt I have ever seen!
It was wonderful to see those crumb blocks turn into a quilt
Love this! What a beauty. Just stunning, thank you for sharing the process. Creating crumb quilts has become my favorite part of quilting.
Wow! It is just stunning when you look at it from the above angle. Amazing Karen. So inspiring!
I love everything about it! Especially with the sun shining through, looking like stained glass. The Tula Pink backing complements it perfectly, and I'm a big fan of straight-line quilting. Wonderful job! (Tangible proof there's nothing wrong with scrap hording LOL)
Absolutely beautiful! I love the design and am in awe of the tricky math for making all the side triangles fit!
Amazing, beautiful - you must be feeling so proud of yourself to finally *just get it done* 🥰
Gosh I love this so much.I normally am not one for completely random quilts with any and all fabrics but this just looks gorgeous. The top in the window looked like stained glass. And I love that all of the fabric memories are in there. It's like a wheres waldo of fabric! Congrats on getting it done. :)
Whatever you decide to transition to doing, I know it will be a success, because of who you are. You are authentic and kind, and that comes through loud and clear. Do what fulfills you! I know I've thanked you before, but I need to repeat those words today. Thank you for all you have done for me and so many others!
What a gorgeous quilt, and such an accomplishment!! I can only imagine how wonderful it must be to lie underneath this at the end of a long day. Absolutely fantastic!!
Magnificent! I love scrap quilts since there are so many stories held in all the fabrics!
This is one amazing quilt! I love it. It turned out so beautiful and has memories of a lifetime you can feel comforted by when you snuggle under it. Thank you for sharing your journey with it. And I appreciate all that I have learned from you and your many videos.
It is absolutely stunning, I love it. You’re a true artist Karen. You saw a vision and you took it there all the way. I love, love it. Great job…
What an incredible project you have finished. It was captivating to watch you transform tiny scraps to such a massive quilt. I don’t have the space, time or patience for something like that, but was totally mesmerised to watch you work. You are such an inspirational quilt tutor and presenter. Thanks Karen. 🙏🏻
It’s finally happening! We get to see the finished result of the adding machine tape crumbs!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Clearly, you are a force of nature. Such an amazing quilt, Karen.
W. O. W. That is like the triathlon of Quilting.!! It looks fabulous Karen
Maybe even an Ultra triathlon 🤪
@@JustGetitDoneQuiltsno lie!
I don't quilt. This is beautiful and makes a very good memory accessory to quilting for a lifetime. I think putting scraps together makes gorgeous items. And I noticed it doesn't even have to be in any order. I wish I could do this but I am limited in my years left on earth.
Oh, I'm delighted to see the finished result! It's absolutely wonderful. And cleaves to the ethos of Waste Nothing.
Congratulations on finishing this epic quilt. It is a beauty.
It's amazing, Karen! I love it so much. You're giving me great ideas for the basket of 6" crumb blocks I make to use up my scraps.
Wowzers! What an accomplishment! Well done, Karen! I love heavy quilts also.
Hi from South Africa 🇿🇦
This is the most beautiful quilt I've seen. You are truly talented. It's scrappy but not tatty... utterly amazing. Well done and thanks for sharing Karen. Be blessed.
It’s absolute perfection! I am so grateful for you and your willingness to share your knowledge.
Karen, Your scrap quilt is a labor of love. So many memories in all those scraps. The quilt is simply stunning. I love that you used just one fabric design for the back. Bravo! 👏👏👏 Well done!
Truly a beautiful project. Not one I’ll ever take on but I can admire the result and the pleasure of seeing favorite fabrics each night.
Simply wonderful! Thanks for showing us how you pushed through and finished this quilt. It is gorgeous.
Oh my goodness me - blown away by this project - it’s UNBELIEVABLY AMAZING ❤❤❤
