Malaska Golf // Why "Turn Your Hips" is a Bad Concept in your Golf Swing

  • I am often told I am at odds with a lot of the golf industry with my instruction. And, yes, sometimes this is true. I believe that a major issue with how golfers are taught is the terminology or tasks we give them.
The idea of turning your hips in order to generate speed is a misconception, and it is one that if forced can end up hurting players.
Hip movement, centripetal force are key to directing the momentum of the golf club in your golf swing. But, it's not a turn.
Don't just play golf. Understand it.

I have played golf for 20 years and I have never learnt this simple explanation. From Portugal: Thanks Mike, it works.

Again, simple, clear and precise knowledge you can take to the course.

"Left leg pushes your left hip back" - wow that helped so much. Thanks for breaking this stuff down into simple concepts that are easy to apply. You're right, it doesn't take long to commit this move to muscle memory.

This has really helped a ton. I've been trying to work on my hip movements and tendency to lift my trail heel on the downswing and this has really helped.

Thank you. Great explanation that is easy to follow. I've never heard anyone else explain it like this.

Hi Mike , Just wanted to say a very big thank you to you, you are an amazing teacher, I have been studying your videos for some time now and finally understand that I have had the wrong concepts of swing all my life even though I have won many competitions it has always been a struggle . My swing now is straighter , longer and more consistent than it was 30 years ago, absolutely a wonderful blissful joy to know and feel that I know what I am doing . Thank you Thank you thank you ....

Best Tip ever! Often had problems with stability. With this swing thought today had some of the purest shots ever. Thank you so much!

This makes so much more sense than trying to 'make my hips fire'. Thank you!

the single most helpful video about "turning" of the lower body/hips, ever. The word " turn" has been a killer for me and my back, never mind never feeling in control. Your explanation helps me easily feel how everything is connected together as opposed to one part of my body fighting against the other part.

This is such a hard concept for me to understand. I come from a baseball background and struggle with over rotation with my drives. I slice hard to the right. This video makes so much sense I can’t wait to try this in my practice regimen. Thank you so much!

Single most important/clear piece of advice I’ve ever heard re hip rotation and staying over the ball... ie, not swaying. Tried it... it works. Thanks.

Mike, I was a PGM student at ASU and taught golf after college. I wish I could go back to all of my old students and my younger self with your philosophy. It just makes the golf swing SO much simpler. I recently got back into playing after years off and I am so glad I found your videos after “trying to hit positions, and ROTATE” I’ve always felt the game in my hands and arms and I’m so glad you reminded me to get back to that as the focus. Sincerely, thank you so much

After struggling with my swing lately - having blown out from 4 to 7 - thanks largely to some bad swing timing that's crept into my game, this has been absolutely fabulous. Conceptually, this for me was easy to apply from the first swing and not only do I feel in more control of my position at impact, my consistency (fairways hit etc.) has been vastly improved, confidence is up and I'm even getting better distance now. A truly wonderful piece of insight here and big thanks from Sydney, Aust - a very grateful Dave :-)

Great video. I play off a low handicap but slide into the ball with my hips and end up with my left knee bent through impact. The concept of the left leg pushing the left hip back rather than the hips sliding towards the target has really helped. Thanks.

You are the first person that have made me comprend the sensation I want to feel in my swing. Thanks a lot.

Great explanation.........not pushing the body where it should not go...brilliant!!!! My new practice drill is to put my feet and knees together and take swings. This really gets you to understand how the hips work without any manipulation. The feel can then be taken with a normal stance. Good stuff Mike.

This is great! Never realized that there was a difference. When I rotate my hips on the backswing, the left hip gets closer to the target line. When I do what you say which is push my right hip back on the back swing, my left hip stays in place. Also notice pushing the right hip back keeps me from swaying. Very cool stuff.
