- Turning a Bespoke or Kitless Fountain Pen Barrel
In this video I explain the process and demonstrate how to turn on my woodlathe the barrel for a Fountain Pen
If you are interested in my Pens, you can find me on Facebook and Instagram under "Just Turnings" or send me an email to "justturnings@hotmail.com"
Please note, these are the first video's I've ever made and put together, they are quite rough and a bit longer than I wanted, but I hope the content makes up for this. Thanks for your understanding.
Nice progress, thank you for sharing. Stay safe, warm, happy and healthy. From Henrico County Virginia
Hi Stephen, great video , I will need to watch them all now but fantastic tutorial
Great vids, have just started kitless in last 3 months but please do me a favour - please clean the top of your lathe! If I had ocd it would drive me mad 😂
Lol, yeah that was about 2-3 months worth of chips and stuff up there. Actually cleaned it up yesterday you'll be pleased to know.
@justturnings do you have a material list you could share for parts and pieces in order to do these style pens? I've made hundreds of pens but nothing like this
Is there a tool that exists that is like the carbide barrel trimmer, but that does not have a hole in the middle, so that you could just tap both sides of the blank and have both ends square quickly?
I’ve learned much from your 5 vids, thank you for publishing them. Regarding your use of a skew as main shaping tool, would you share how you sharpen it?
I have a Tormek T4 slow speed whetstone sharpener which I use. I have the platform set for the correct angle and just touch it up regularly.
I don't use a skew very much (never for a pen so far), but I don't think I've ever seen someone angle it downward like you do. Does that minimize catches?
I'm self taught with the Skew, I usually have the height of the tool rest a bit too high, mostly because I'm a bit lazy to stop and move it down. I just adapt my technique to work with varying heights and am quite comfortable with it now. Very rare I ever get catches with my Skew, maybe twice in the last 200 pens that I can think of (still have the destroyed blank from one of them on my shelf as a reminder).
@@justturnings Thanks! BTW, I'm really enjoying your videos, I agree with someone else's comment that this is one of the better series on how to do this! Not having experience with using tap & dies, is there a "rule" for the diameter of the piece to be threaded (let's say outside threads) compared to the size of the die? Or, do you know where I could go to learn that? I'd like to do a kitless rollerball pen, and I don't think my pen will have to be as thick in diameter as a fountain pen, so I want to know what size tap/die to buy.
Nice Video! I enjoy the detail and explanation of your work. You mentioned that you use polishing paste instead of micro mesh. Does the paste give a better polish than the micro mesh or is it just faster?
Both. I feel its a better finish and that its faster. Theres another video on my channel that I run through the Polish Pastes and my technique on them if you want to see it in more detail.
@@justturningsI watched that video and it's one of the reasons I wanted a Just Turnings pen. They look like they have a glass like finish.
I've always wondered whether interesting products can be made from the drill shavings? 🤔
Relic Pens recently made a set of pens, using the cut off ends of other pen projects, in the resin. It created a resin that looked like it had planets in it. He called it the Celestial pen. I have one.
At 23:30, where do you make a "mark" when using the triple-start die? The camera angle doesn't let us see.
Sorry about that, wasnt the best angle for setting up the camera, but was the best I could manage with what I had.
I'm marking a spot on the barrel where the Die finishes turning, as it is a triple start die, there is 3 different threads and 3 different spots for it to stop. I want to make sure I get all 3 cut as cleanly as I can by having the Die run through all 3 threads. I mark it off on the barrel so I know which ones i've done.
@@justturnings Thank you for the reply. I am just about to start turning Kitless pens and your videos are easily the very best there are.
Great video, just didn’t like the camera angle. Wanted to see maybe a Birds Eye view
