Beautiful! Fun to watch, and I love that you included the disaster and didn't let it stop you from finishing the pen. Loved it!
Thanks so much! I'm an old guy in Canada collecting my tools to start making pens in the Spring. I'd do it now but we are -30C this week and the work shed is a wee bit crisp.
Beautiful work and teaching was well presented. Looking forward to seeing more!
Great work Kate! This is the perfect way to 'dip your feet' into the world of custom fountain pen turning without having to invest a substantial amount of money into the tooling that's necessary to do so, ie, taps, dyes and many other things. Thank you for that!!
Thanks, my friend! I am very happy with how you made it, you are wonderful. I remembered this craft that I worked in in Italy. It was a wonderful days and the materials used in it are very expensive. I wish I could have such a machine so that I could produce all the models that I learned, and unfortunately I do not have its capabilities. Thank you for providing this wonderful content
Kate, nice job with the pen after it cracked off - it looks great!
Beautiful pen
Awesome job and amazing pen!! congratulations!
That is a very nice pen! Good job!
Very nice. Thanks!
Such a great teacher and turner! Good work!
Just got my first closed end pen kit from you “Apollo ” looking forward to making it!
Very nice, good to see you left the issue in the video and explained what happened.
Thanks so much!
Well done even with the oops.
Great video! I enjoyed your demo this past weekend in Middle Tennessee.
Great video to show how straightforward it is to turn this style of closed end pen. I want to try your finishing recipe too
Thanks buddy! I definitely want to do another wood one with a craft coat finish and see how different it feels and looks
NOICE!I used to have bloodwood break on me all the time. Most of the times I am able to sprinkle in other wood shavings and glue it back up, its a defect but 'turns' out looking cool. Nice pen!!!!
Thanks so much! Some woods just don't want to cooperate haha
Nice job Kate. It looks really nice. I can’t wait to try on for myself.
make sure you share photos when you do!
Having seen this kit in person I'm super excited to turn my own!
I can’t wait to see what you make with them!
That's a great looking pen! That burl really pops when you put a finish on it.
It sure does! It looked pretty good when I started but with finish it’s like BAM
Well done, Kate. Looking forward to getting my kits to try them out.
Thanks so much John!
Good work and well finished. In order not to impregnate the tools or the lathe when I spray the finishing lacquer, I use a thin veneer of plywood, with a C shape, the pen will rotate in the hole of the C and protect the tools. Greetings from Spain.
That's a great tip! I'm not using a finishing lacquer here, but rather an accelerant for the CA Glue finish. Next time i use a spray lacquer I will totally use that tip!
Woohoo!! That turned out so cool, great video too! I was sorry to see it crack off, but it still looked amazing in the end. Just don't hold it too close to your eyes, you'll never know the difference 😉
Thanks buddy! I’m pretty darn happy with how it came out even with the crack in it. Someone actually offered to buy it despite the crack. I miss it already 😭
That was a great informative video. Thankyou for sharing.
Very helpful video. Just got my pen kits and need to cast some blanks to try them out.
When you warn against gluing your blank together you were not kidding. I just had 3 that ended up glued together. Going to figure out how to save them. Possibly with a segment at the joint.
Nicely done! That’s a killer pen! You had a good save! 😉
Thanks so much! I thought it was important to show that you can usually make it work
Beautiful. One thing I noted - you use q-tips with superglue - be careful as cyanoacrylate can react violently with cotton and even start a fire!
Would like to see you place the cap insert into the cap barrel please.
That was Awesome...!!!! Subbed..
Enjoyed the video,
Thanks!!
What happened to more videos? Where's the one showing how to do the accent band?
Hi, I watch this several times, why did you stop making videos? If it’s because of content or response you should not be stopping. It’s great! Another reason, than it it’s non of my business.
Mine shipped a couple days ago.. I just have the pen vice chuck, not a collet chuck, can I use that with tape around the blank or mandrel or something?
I wouldn't personally recommend it but there's always more than one way to do something. Without a collet chuck, I'd be worried that it could get out of round
@@BowHarrowWorkshop okmill go pick one up.
All the pens I’ve turned I have bushings to know how far to turn down. I just received these kits. How far do I turn them down? Seems like on the body turn to the mid section ring. The cap turn until I like the thickness perhaps? Thanks in advance.
I use the larger metal section of the mandrels as bushing guides
@@BowHarrowWorkshop ah, that makes sense. Thank you!
Mine didn’t fit with 1/4”, 5/16, 23/64.. I had to go 5/16x3” 23/64x 2.25” and 3/8x1.25”.
What material were you drilling into and what kind of lathe are you using? Did you drill on the lathe?
This is for the bullseye 180 “kitless” set right?
@@BowHarrowWorkshop Im using a hardwood blank i got at woodcraft, jet 1440 lathe and drilled on the lathe.
I went one size up and it all fit with a tiny bit of jiggle.
Yea this is the bullseye 180 - weird that yours was too tight. I wonder if my bits are a tad off in size
The video looks very bad, the camera is fatally positioned. I think I should focus from above and further away, so that you can see the gouge movements and the shape and movements when contacting the cutting edge with the wood. Thanks.
All I have to record is my phone right now, so I’m trying my best. I’m hoping that the next video can show closer shots for you guys. Thanks for the input
Really? She spends all that time explaining and showing how it's done, not to mention the time she spent editing and you complain about the camera work? Perhaps you should try making and posting a video of your own explaining how to position a camera correctly instead of criticizing. IMHO Kate's camera work is just fine.
