Being good at poker is one thing, living your life in a way that sets you up for success is another. Ben might be a pro poker player, but he'd succeed at anything because of his mentality and mental strength. What's so de-mystifying about the best poker players being the best, is that they can all focus on the process not the end goal. The ego is left at the door in pursuit of being better, every day. What he describes here isn't a way to be a poker pro really, it's a way to succeed at anything you want to really do in your life.

      Good comment.
I would go further and would say, he descirbes the "boring and brutal reality" behind the curtains of succsses. To be honest, that is not, what u wanna hear and what u imagine in ur illusions about beeing a poker pro. If u follow his guide, it appears easier to looking for a "conventional high paid " job, than to try becoming a pro. And after took all this informations in the right place in ur mind, u have to ask urself - is it really worth it? Because it will hard to find one recreational, who want to become a pro because he "love the process of the game". I never met one... Everybody is "in the game" because of the easy earned money dream...
      Great Video, Ben.

I am currently taking your Masterclass course for the 2021 WSOP. I used play poker for a living, however when I would move up the ranks and play the bigger games, my poker game would steadily decline. Money was great in poker games back home, but I felt outclassed when I played at the WSOP. This year however, I feel more prepared than ever before and its due to the time, effort, and studying of your course. Thanks for your content and by also leading by example. #letscrush

Your approach to poker would apply on anything. Having realistic plans and goals, and maintaining discipline. I am extremely grateful to have learned poker. It taught me skills that I can apply in my life. Taking results right in the stomach is the best way to learn, and poker helped me with that. It helped me with developing focus and not being shaken by immediate results.

This was a really good video and I would like to share a bit of my perspective. First step to becoming a poker pro is to play it as a hobby for some months at least. You can't just jump into and think about how you are gonna make money from it, poker needs to be your passion first. That's important because there's a lot of stigma around poker and it being gambling. If you are able to explain how poker is different from other forms of gambling and show your passion and what you love about it, people who you care about will be able to better understand it and it will be easier for them to support it.
For me personally it is encouraging to hear what Ben is saying on this topic because eventhough i was mostly alone on my journey, I did do most of the things Ben is suggesting to do (be open about it to friends and family, more or less sticking to a plan and schedule, having money saved up when i decided go really go for it) when you are starting. It took me a around 2.5 years from playing online poker just as a hobby to moving out with 8 months of money saved up and fully going for it. So you just need to stay patient while also being real with yourself as much as possible throughout. GL to anyone on this journey

Hi Ben, thanks for the amazing content!!
I have been working through the Tournament masterclass since last September and I really feel like I am understanding the principles.
The thing that I am having the most trouble with is staying present at the table. I often find myself making instant decisions instead of thinking thoroughly about the spot and considering everything before deciding what to do.
Do you have any tips for staying present at the table?
Thanks for all of the content you produce!!!

In the last 16 months I've started taking online poker tournaments very seriously and am profiting way more money than my current job. It's taken about a year for me to know confidently that I'm beating mid stakes/lower end of high stakes. I can learn a lot from the soft skills you mention in this video. I'm going to make the plunge into full time professional poker in the next month or so thanks for all the wisdom you put out in the world! 🌎

In September I will try another approach, play a small number of hands but with full concentrate, will think a lot + studying every day. I'll change my goal to game solving and strategic play, instead of money.

I had a fight with my boss so I told him I would leave for a week. I found like $150 in my stars account, won like $2k in a bounty builder and since that day I just kept playing and playing and I was 'pro'. After two years I was completely worn out from poker. My results were decent to good but I didnt had the fire anymore to prove myself to my friends and family. I proved myself I could do it and I just quit. I traveled for half a year and started working somewhere else.
Since then I only play poker for fun and im probly a losing but a very happy player. Poker didnt make me happy
btw: I had been playing winning poker on the side for over 10 years but I never had the balls and the will to go pro.
Dont even think about going pro with a bankroll as small as mine was. Bankroll and money management are KEY and never ever tilt. NEVER tilt.

Hi Ben! Love that video, thanks a lot. I have several questions so I’m gonna ask each of them separately so it will be easier for people to read them and for u to answer.
I’m already semi pro and considering going pro as my results are quite good since the last 9 months (MTT - 10 to 50$ mostly). I worded and studied a lot (including your masterclass), and I’m glad to see that the results are now coming.
But I keep playing only one or two tournaments at the same time. So of course because of that I have longer sessions, and I have to play probably more time per day than others. Point is I feel comfortable like that, and I still don’t feel to play 4 / 6 tables or more at the same time. Do u think that s a mistake? Should I force myself to open more tables? Because for now I hate this idea of being in pre finale table or finale table meanwhile I have other tournaments running beside, I feel like I’m not 200% focus on my main tournament. What do u think?

Hey Ben, what is your opinion on coaching for profit? I am playing poker (part time) profitably for the last year by watching UA-cam, streamers, using icmizer and rewatching hands. I now want to transist to full time and got offered a 70/30 deal for one year (legit coach with good history for last 3 years) the goal is to make me fit in this time so I can coach myself afterwards. Is this a good way to start into the poker career? (no staking or bankroll deal just coachings for profit)

Nice video although I think bank roll management should be explained a bit more.
Let's say you have a 10.000$ bankroll, and you only play MTT's up to 55$.
On a Sunday you have the storm, big 11, big 22, big 33, hot 33(x3), bounty 33, bounty 55, hot 55, bounty 55, Mini bounty HR 55, hot 22, Double Deuce 22 etc. And that's just Pokerstars, without re-entries and when there are no series. If you include other poker rooms and series, you're schedule goes way over 1k in no time ( if you are multitabling obvious).
So my question would be, do you work with a total buy-in for the day ? What are the bankroll rules for turbo's/hypers/satellites/re-entries, what do you do with series ?

Probably one of the best videos you have posted so far. I can really see and feel how passionate you are about that topic! 💛 However I actually do have an important question:
So many Pros talk about what to do and how to do it - but my question is: How to recognize that u actually won't make it to Pro?
I tried it 4 Times already to become a Pro in the end I couldn't stand it for longer than just 6 months in a row. And everytime something else bothered me after a couple of months. From social isolation, over downswings over getting bored of the format to stamina issues - I tried to overcome everything, reviewed everything but in the end I am asking myself: should I take another attempt? I mean I love the game. I am a decent player. I even moved to eastern Europe cause of that dream. But I don't know, if there are some indicators that prove that I might no be capable of becoming a pro? I know that not everybody can make it due to some Personal limitations. But I also know that u should never give up if u really really want something...
So do you may have any advice for that state of mind as well? 🤔😕

    • @RaiseYourEdge
      @RaiseYourEdge  2 роки тому +1

@@RaiseYourEdge yeah I can imagine... I mean you are still full of passion for that game and probably far off a Situation where you might decide to quit. Maybe I should quit fully for a couple of months and then just observe myself if I find something else what I could go for or if I really miss that competition. Maybe it's also a way to just accept that I can't do it forever, but accepting that I just switch every half year to something else, just to have some variance in life - which can also be an advantage... 🤔

i have played on and off semi pro for around 10 years, i have quit the game few times due to downswings , when you play for a living it can really take the fun out the game as you take bad beats more serious. Also ( this is my problem ) you need to be strict with BRM , which i never am , i usually do it for months then start buying into games my bank roll cant take and BOOM busted roll this has happened to me time and time again. the reason being i play MTT's and i want to win at least 2k up top for my 7-10 hour grind

I'm a micro stakes grinder. I just looked at my sharkscope stats, and I have played 3k tours over the past 4 years with avr field over 4k. I'm worse compared to the field that I used to be, but still slighly winning at 1-5 dollar buyin. I've bought masterclass few weeks back.
I'm not trying to go pro, but would be nice with 500-1000k dollars extra a month. That's my goal. Do I need 300 buyins or more for this field sizes? I try to mix in some caps, but I only play pokerstars, and they only have 3 running in the time I am able to register.

Hey Moz that depends on many things, such as if you are able and willing to reload your bankroll.. how good you are compared to your opponents.. the speed of the tournaments.. But 200-300 buyins definitely sounds like a reasonable BRM for these stakes in general!

I have a year left in college and am planning on giving myself a year or two after I graduate to try to become a poker pro..Do you think it makes sense to start a twitch stream/ making some sort of content as well? I've heard some people say its better to just focus on getting better at the game, but I think it also makes sense to have another revenue stream that doesn't rely directly on poker. It also seems like a great way to meet people and make connections in the poker world. What do you guys think?

    • @jeebtheboss
      @jeebtheboss 2 роки тому

Honestly I see so many players on twitch but with very bad results on SharkScope. And I still wonder, why do these people stream? They have nothing to teach except “don’t do like I do”. It’s great to share some contents, ok, but as long as you know about what you are talking about. Right?
However I agree about the fact that it can help some people to focus on their session instead of watching Netflix beside. So you got nothing to lose trying. And of course you might be able to connect with other players. Which is good, as being a poker player is often a lonely trip. Again today I scored a tournament and I wanted to share my feeling with people later on, but I had no one to talk about that. I feel like I’m annoying my friends talking about poker again and again. Weird feeling

My goal is to become a live tournament player in mid-high stakes tournaments but I don't really have the bankroll to start grinding low stakes live tournaments (100-200$ buy-in). Should I focus on playing live cash to continue building my skills and bankroll or should I really focus on online to sharpen my tournament skills? My dream is to be able to play full tournament schedules like the WSOP, pokerGO events, and tournament series around the country/world. And is it unrealistic to have these goals as someone who is 29 years old? I have been playing poker on and off for 13 years and studying casually for the last year or so but I'm not sure if I should fully commit to studying or if it's a dumb idea. Thanks Ben

I play poker daily, many hours. Sometimes i lost my mindset about what i schould think about that i do when i play well, but sometimes i feel so lost in my game, so im getting frustrated. . My question, what do you do to not feel lost ingame, about everythinhi you have grabed and learned about the game and different spots. Maybe i think to mutch or i dont fkn know. Sometimes its just feels like im forgets my game. Do you have notes written down at the paper behind you or do you have everything in your head? And how do we know if we have a downswing or if we just playing bad, theses things hollow my brain...

Great video amd thanks you so much first off.. I have been playing poker for almost 20 years now..and lately more and more often..However, I have my ups and downs just like anybody else, but I would highly unlikely call myself anything near a pro or even a semi pro player..to become that I really thinks it takes a LOT of strategy amd discipline..For one I don't hardly bluff..ever. But my problem is that I have a hard time reading the table and understanding if someone is trying to or is bluffing me..if I could just get past this one technique and read people a little better sometimes..I would be pro by now..So all in all..I would like to learn stuff about how to read positions and others actions on the tables..I'm not sure if there are videos about them..but I did see something similar from Ben I believe somewhere about positions and when to 3 bet..and calling a 3 bet raise and what not..but even that I was having a hard time understanding..maybe I need something called "reading bluffs for dummies" 😆 anyways that's my only two cents for now..but would love to see more great videos..thanks again Ben!

You can't just sit around and wait for big hands because they just don't always show up each day/night. It's getting old getting the money in as like 60%-80% favorite and losing so consistently.

Hey Ben, Loads of love and respect from India. I am a poker player for 10 months now. I crush small stakes cash games and then the very next day the opposite thing happens with me. In this poker journey of this vital 10 months, I have still managed to win 3 micro stakes tournaments. You might be knowing about how indian players play poker, how their ranges are soooo polarised or better saying that most of the micro stakes player have NO range whatsoever. A lot of fish players just swim in the tournament for fun probably. Some are getting their way through and some just get knocked out. So to some it up, I have a huge fear of playing with these fish players. Any guidance from you would be highly appreciated.

I personally know people who are living of things like "making experiments" or "breaking Guinness records publicly" etc. this also sounds stupid at first, if you actually don't understand. What about all those awesome photographers? Spending like months to take 1 perfect photo in African savanna? This job always sounded delusional for me for example, but I never judged that, just only couldn't understand. It's the same thing with poker and other things.
