3 years later this is probably by far one of the best podcasts out there by two of the most humble players. I revisit this when I am having a bad day or week of playing poker to ground me and give me some reassurance it's not all linear.
Hey Ben, great conversation, one thing from a "city boy" who had cousins who grew up on a farm. I think you are under the impression that on the farm you are just kicked back swinging in a hammock. That is only the case if you are super wealthy, if you grow up on a working farm you are going to be busy from sun up to sun down. You learn how to work hard and work smart. You learn how to prioritize, because if you want time for your self, you have to get the farm work done quickly and correctly. (smile) I stayed on the farm for a few summers and it ws tough at the time. BUT I am so grateful for the experience, it really helped me to become who I am today. I had no idea Jason K was a country boy
Yeah... I think this is a super under-rated quality, so much content on YT is one person interrupting the other over and over again... It's nice to see each person finish their thought before the other person starts
This is the best interview I ever watched! I am questioning my personality, my actions and reactions. This is honestly a deep one. New subscriber for sure.
Jason Koon's interview for the I Am High Stakes Poker (in 2018) was probably one of the best and deep interviews with an accomplished poker player I had ever seen and had a huge impact on my mindset. Since then, I always look up to Jason as a person and poker player. Amazing podcast episode, as usual, thank you!
Just coming around to this video, great watch. I was on the beach w Koon in Melbourne after we both busted the Aussie Millions in 2012 and he was doing backflips while we had a convo about our biggest punts and future dreams. "We are gonna get there man" he said, referring to becoming the best in the game. What a privilege to have watched this guy do work over the last decade and a half and I'm sure there are many more highlight reel additions to come.
thanks ben and jason for tor taking your time and making this content. we young players and newcomers to the poker world and life in general really appreciate the wisdom you guys are sharing with us. much love. thanks RYE ! really quality content !
This is amazing thank you both so much for doing this... I loved the part about forgiving urself quicker n moving forward. I literally just went thru the same situation n hearing it from Jason is AMAZING... Thanks again
Great talk again. The psilocybin part that Jason brought up is spot on. The bad trips are the best, face your fears. They pulled me out of severe depression in 2015. But they are aren't for everyone don't expect a quick fix.
Great info.. only a few months into studying/playing seriously, and this is great, I've been leaning more towards playing as much volume as I can and playing at the limits then working on curbing bad habits/mistakes. It's all about communication, information, deception, but most people are straightforward so it's like listening to what they say and responding the best way.
@@TheFartBreakersNr1 impossible if you don’t manage your bankroll properly, sure. I’ve been fortunate enough to hit a pretty large score recently so I think with proper BRM it’s possible
Doug Polk's podcasts don't even come close to this level of conversation/interviewing. Good job Ben. Almost never interrupting your guests and when you do you apologize for it. Keep up the good work!
Great podcast once again, this is by far my favorite so far. It makes me realize a lot of stupid things I do when I play poker so I will try to be more mindful of that. I used to find that watching nose-bleed games and players massive successes discouraging because of my own small-time living at the game. So I stopped paying attention to that and focused on things more important, which helped a lot. Now it's shifted into watching bad regs streaming (and being honest about how good they are, but bad plays are bad plays), but having ridiculous 20k, 40k, or 100k days at times. Then of course when I lose my majors deep in unlucky spots it feels even more devastating. In general, I'm trying to stray away from focusing on other people's things and focus more on my own. As Jordan Peterson said, "Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not who someone else is today." Hearing you guys talk about your upbringing and things you guys have had to work on is just fantastic. It really makes it down to earth and reminds me that there are a lot of things I need to improve on besides poker, especially not being too hard on one's self. I feel like I've aged too much from poker-induced stress. It's not good for the soul. So a very long-winded and probably douchey way of saying thanks for this podcast. Keep it up Benny boy.
Fuuuuck, what Ben said about concentration really hit home. I’m writing this comment while working my job at my desk. I can NOT concentrate on work lately and I think it’s partly distaste for my job combined with social media addiction. ADHD doesn’t help either but I’m ready to overcome these obstacles and put in the work to be bored sometimes lol
Great podcast! Someone mentioned you becoming the Joe Rogan of poker podcasts and I actually had already thought about that before reading the comment. The thing that did it was how both you and JRE often (regardless of topic or guest) mentions good values, not being a victim, taking responsibility, staying healthy in mind and body etc. Thank you
Im going to try and enjoy the process of life. Whether it is becoming a poker pro, or anything else that life may offer to me. I can't explain in words the happiness that poker has already given me, such as routines, habits, role and inspiration models and I'm still playing micros. Bencb I hope one day I can meet you, it seems that you are a great person.
This podcast was really enjoyable. Going through some struggles at the moment and pods like this always make me come out stronger. Thanks Ben and Jason :)
I can relate to Jason with the flight or fight responses. I've only really became aware about five years ago that it was a real problem ,that most people I've come across in my life don't act/react like that and i'm no spring chicken. React is the the key word I suppose. I'm trying to be more aware of my reacting instead of responding, however every time it happens now, i'm kicking myself because it seems to be outside of my control until it's happened and pretty quickly I realize what has transpired, but the reaction has already happened. I think that not beating yourself up over it is a good start. Jason seems far from what he's describing about his younger self and I admire him for being open about it!

54 min mark: I believe Koon is talking about the hand he played vs. Jake Daniels on High Stakes Poker. Koon had QQ and Jake had KK (top set). The following hand Koon talks about is (I believe) Jake vs. Dwan. Jake had A9 for ace high into Dwan’s rivered flush (97dd). Could be completely off though..
I agree most can’t become pro. Not because most will never have the ability, but because you have to be willing to lose it all. Most people don’t have the mindset to put it all on the line, then rebuild if it goes wrong
