    At 74 and still cycling (coming up on 10 years (7 with a coach) my ankles and knees are being adversely affected by gout attacks that come and go. I'm going all in on he medical stuff (but never could tolerate any of the drugs long term which is a challenge) and now including weightlifting with a coach. Please more Lucy and updates on how you're doing. Somedays I need all the inspiration I can get :)

      Juliette is a professional cyclist so her training is a little more involved than just getting back into shape. She has to obsess to remain competitive amongst elite cyclists!

    • @lifecycleproject
      @lifecycleproject Рік тому +2

      @@antonia4722 Yup, no argument there; living for and from cycling, 'obsessing' is the only way to stay competitive. My comment was directed more to those among Juliette's 100k following, who like myself, are happy to enjoy cycling as a life choice, but without the pressures of competition. That said, the day comes for all elite athletes when choices have to be made, objectives and expectations tailored to the times.

    Hope the physio resolves the problem. I’m terrible at doing any of the mundane stuff. I just want to get on my bike and ride, and not worry about other exercise or stretching! At 43 I’m definitely feeling more niggles than ever before, so can totally relate to the accumulation of abuse catching up with me from years of throwing myself around! More videos like this are always useful and interesting. 😊

    believe me Juliet!! The best Cycling years are still to come.
    I am 56 today and once had very similar issues. Well at least it felt very similar at first sight. Might still be entirely different for sure. But from my experience I can say that very often Sporty People tend to build up unnecessary muscle tension. The problem might be in the muscles but it might be also unconsciously brain controlled tension. This can build up over years without problems. But then suddenly mostly triggered by other issues can pop up.
    Additionally from my experience it recommend to check for protective postures that can often also occur during everyday's walking (hope this makes sense - i'm not a native english speaker but i hope you'll get what I mean). For example in my case I realized after years that while walking due to an other small orthopedic issue I did't put accurate weight on my right forefoot while walking. Understanding this and training natural roll motion in my feet helped me segnificantly to cure my knee issue (which took me years because you just don't realize that you do that. It can be second nature).
    For me it helped to record my everyday walking with camera equipment. The first step was for me to see "ok this is not symmetricel / not entirely natural walking. At that point I didn't understand what was the problem. But I understood I had a problem whith protective posture which was due to another injury.
    I this will be somehow helpful. Sports People are great in listening to their body and in learning how to help themselves. You will have a long lasting and very joyful cycling career ahead !!
    All the best !!!

    Cyclist, skier, sailer here . Prior to my hip replacement 4 years ago my left thigh circumference was about 75mm smaller than my right. For years I had emphasized core strength to stabilize my body (left leg ended up 25mm shorter than my right) following the new hip; no limp but 4 years of sustained work and right leg is still appreciably larger than my left and doesn’t cause me a problem. I am firmly of the belief core strength is the key to the body coping with imbalance between left and right.

    I always use a flashing front and rear light during the day. I think this is doubly important when it’s raining. Even if you do have arthritis it would be a mistake to quit cycling. Squats with heavy weights are bad for your spine. Once the spine is injured there’s no going back. It’s something you have to live with for life. An incline leg press targets the quads and glutes just as well as squats while not putting compression on the spinal column. You can also do one leg presses to help with the strength differences in your legs.

  • @scottmiller4770
    @scottmiller4770 Рік тому +1

    I have the same thing!! Don't let it get you down, it takes a long time to get it corrected but you will get there. Mine took 6 months of serious work, yours will probably take less if you caught it before it started hurting AND making all the fun noises. My biggest piece of advice is to ask the doc if you can do that 15 min work out every day (if not right away, do it once you build up the strength and get approval to do it that frequently). Then you just make it part of your routine, I do mine as soon and I get up. Even though I no longer do it EVERY day, I have that habit now so I get it most days without even having to think about it.
    Make sure to listen to your body when you do this. I personally got better results reducing the weight and doing the exercises every day rather than trying to push hard 3-4 times a week when working out. You could be completely the opposite, but just don't stop trying and you will get there! You got this!!

    Thanks for sharing that Juliet , and great that your cycling days are not over. Always worth checking out these niggles head on as you have done. Yes a video around the physio side of things would be great and interesting. They do wonders and are often under represented in their contribution to health.
    Currently I am recovering from COVID (first time) and have not cycled for several weeks and will be listening to my body despite having a big cycling event in 6 weeks (typical I get it now) worried if I go at it too soon I won't be able to do it. Therefore training plan has gone out of the window and I will just have to ride my bike and decide nearer the time if I have the endurance for this event (FWC) there is always next year. At least I can watch your videos to cheer me up and I also have some gravel events lined up later in the year.
    Thanks for being such an inspiration!

    I don't think you've too much to worry about, Juliet. I'm old enough to be your grandpa, and my knees are painful (from running), especially going down stairs. Several doctors have said that cycling helps control the pain, and I agree. I even do squats, though with light weights. And when the snow has gone and it warms up a little here*, I'll be out on my bike trying to do PBs on the bike path. So I'm sure it's gonna take a heck of a lot to derail you.

    Many (probably most) people have postural asymmetries. Over the years these can lead to atrophy, or at least poor development, particularly in the stabilizing muscles. And the typical/popular compound exercises don't always address those musculature imbalances, even if they are generally good for whole body development.

    I'd suggest that you consider Neurokinetic Therapy. NKT is a fantastic modality to identify movement pattern problems. The therapist can use their own correctives to rectify the problems, eg physio, ART, DNS, SFMA etc. I'd recommend at least a level 2 therapist. Your mention of scars was very interesting to me, as NKT prioritises scars, fascia and a couple of other elements, as dysfunctions in these can have significant impact on motor control functions of muscle groups and associated structures.

Also, like hands we have dominant legs. Think of playing soccer/football. Unless you are a pro, most people kick the ball with their dominant leg. I am glad you are doing something about your knee. Physio is not what it use to be and I know a lot of people that don't use it. Many moons ago, it was rest, let it heal. Now it is more like 'Ok, lets work on getting this going sooner rather than later.' Once again, all the best from the east coast of Canada.

    So pleased it's nothing serious, you're more "real" than some of the other youtubers,I would miss your content. Do you not ride with a double side power meter? Might have picked this up

    If I worried about all the sounds and cracks in my body my life would be over! More seriously I had a funny knee for quite a while and after losing a bit of weight and using it a bit more for walking and running it got back to normal. Must have got stronger.

    Juliet, do you use a power meter on any of your bikes, and if so, have you seen any differences in power output? Might be helpful also??😊

    I wonder what is normal, I feel like everyone has a dominant leg/arm. I know for a fact my right arm is stronger than my left and my left leg is weaker than my right, I think that is why we have a prefence for example, riding with the right foot foward.

    Biggest lie with outdoor gear- ‘waterproof’ if it really keeps the rain out it keeps the sweat in. Used to ride motorbikes and the only gear that was waterproof for a few hours was Belstaff waxed cotton and Dunlop wellies, not the gear for cycling though.

    Funny I used to be a Pro Snowboarder back in the 90s, not jumping more downhill Euro racing and definitely have a larger right calf and stronger right leg, do you have a link for Lucy, she really knows her stuff, I have a dodgy left knee too😂?

    I’m awful at going to the gym. I’d be in a rock fight! At 58 I know I should but it takes a lot to get me in there.
