I do like this ending, and what it shows. The music is light yet melancholy, along with the visuals being very telling. Aizhawa and Matsuda presumably finding Kira's body at last. Misa heading to her death (presumably). Mikami lies on the floor alone - while the original version shows his lonely death, of course, this version puts emphasis on just how much _no one_ cares about him, as the last person who ever did so died ages ago. While Light is still on the staircase, caught in them emptiness between Heaven and Hell, the sunlight has passed by him, showing the world just quietly moving on, no longer giving him any attention or validation. Then, Ryuk silently sits before taking off back to the Shinigami realm. The somberness really drives home the point of the final message, of mortal death being irreversible.
Even with Ryuk after the events of the show, it definitely displays that something inside him has passed. His eyes are now dull, misty and colorless, and he wears a ragged cloak, and he seems to have lost some of his smugness. In the end, I think Ryuk, even though he was thoroughly entertained, grew to resent his world even more upon having his one true investment being taken from him.

“No one cares about him”? Looks like someone didn’t read the last chapter of the Manga, there’s still a bunch of Kira followers waiting for his return. In the end, Light kinda got what he wanted. He made Kira a god, praised by many.

@@L1z43vr This isn't really based on the manga, its a retelling of the anime - as pointed out by L in the introduction to both OVAs. Chapter 108 [the true final chapter] was never animated in the anime, or OVAs, so cblake is correct in their writing of Mikami as the OVA follows a different canon seperate to anime and manga.

@@ScatteredCollectorIt doesn’t matter the outcome was the same in the anime just slightly different. Kira had followers in the anime.

Maybe lights father was right. Killing people could bring no true happiness. In the end, light was forgotten. Mikami was forgotten. Misa was forgotten. They all died alone.
Or it was simply lights arrogance and sloppiness that lead to kira being killed. He didn’t take near seriously enough. In the end he died like Voldemort. Simply laid there, a lifeless body despite everything he had done to try and save his life

So Ryuk's leaving the human realm, eh? Good riddance.
