Scary Nature: Sundew Timelapse Compilation

- Out of the 3 types of plants that I have (Venus Flytraps, Pitcher Plant's and Sundews), it is the Sundew that get's the least attention from people. It's a shame, because when you look at them through macro photography and timelapse, they are probably among the most alien looking plants in the world.

I bought a plant offline and when I opened it gnats went all over. The sundew is what SAVED MY HOUSE from the infestation

Fun fact: Regions which have carnivorous plants are often low in nitrogen. Therefore, plants such as this have adapted to prey upon small insects as their primary source of nitrogen in order to grow.
This adaptation is essentially Engineering. Nature seems to have a mind or something.

If trees ever start eating people, this is how they'll do it: Sweet smelling vines covered in sap, and when you touch them, they reflexively curl around you, trapping you in sticky vines. Then they'll slowly curl until they lift you up to the top like a jellyfish, and they'll eat you.
Whoa, I gotta write a scifi thriller about this. I suppose it would be a pretty slow death though. Not too exciting.

Those little droplets of what looks like water at the end of each antenna are actually a sticky substance that eventually encases the bug and the bug get completely covered in the substance. The bug dies when it suffocates because the sticky substance doesn’t let air through

@Hyasconi Id like to know why this would've made you doubt evolution. Carnivorous plants evolved to thrive in an environment where soil lacks proper nutrients. This plant evolved to thrive in an environment where plants would seem like a bad idea. These plants evolving this way made them have access to unique environments where they had little to no competition.

Technically, all creatures are halfway evolved, because evolution isn't an event that just happens and is done, it's continuous.
A prime example in the modern world is elephants. Their tusks are getting smaller, because elephants with smaller tusks are surviving longer and reproducing more than elephants with big tusks

I own 3 of these and two different strands or species.. I believe. I also own 4 venus fly traps and I've had a pitcher plant for 2 years. I live in south-east USA perfect climate for carnivorous plants if you know how to keep them...
Really like to read next to them in the summer and watch them eat life.

it's dew attracts insects, it has sensors on the red parts that feel the insect and tells the plant 'HEY BITE NOW', then the plant squeezes it to death. what a bad hug

+Vanessa Imperial Sundews take longer to kill their prey but have a higher kill rate than flytraps. so no not really. the one advantage flytraps have is that they can catch larger prey. a like for effort though, it's good to see people that are interested in these marvelous killers of insects.

Sam Lancaster Actually as I recall it can take anywhere from three days to a week and a half for a fly trap to digest its prey, depending on the size of the prey item. I've seen some of the fly traps in my collection digest whole harvestmen (daddy long legs) in a matter of five days! That's impressive for a small plant.

Love this timelapse sundew video. I grow tons of these cape sundews because they are hardy and almost invasive in my greenhouse but never made a timelapse video of it.

I have lots of these on my property and in my house, along with pitcher plants, plus giant and normal sized flytraps. Never see bug or spiders in my house. Ever.
