Kim, I had the same problem with a few packs of these seeds, I looked up information online and it turns out a lot of these seeds aren't dead they just dry out. If you soak them in distilled water for a day or two, until they sink) then plant them it is supposed to greatly improve the germination rate.
I remember when I was a kid, I got a vft. Reppoted it in regular soil, watered with tap water and kept it in shadow (because I tought it was tropical plant). And when winter came I didn't give it a dormancy. Needles to say, it survived around half of a year.
Hi , it was in distill water in a small container. But it was experimental. The right stable way should be in proper peat moss and sand or perlite mix. Check out website flytrapcare ya
+Tish Jason Wow, Thnak you for the advice. I have started mine in a soil blend with Perlite and washed the whole stuff with dilute citric acid to wash the minerals from the soil, then with deionised water to take the acidity away but I will start my other seeds the way you suggest!
As a gardener I’m so use to seeing blasts of colors and quick blooms and all sorts of vines and crazy shapes. This was boring lmao. I can’t grow these and if I did sell them it’d have to be expensive. Props to the people who grow these.
Hahahaha Jag_Meister same here. I planted them and worried they are dead after 3 days because I still didn't see anything. Turns out it takes up to *4 weeks* until they even sprout.
The quickest way is to get a few clean test tubes and put 1 seed in each test tube, and fill with distilled water. Keep them at ~80°F and provide ~12 hours fluorescent light( for when the seeds first germinate). it will take between 10-30 days depending on the seeds. The seeds will most likely float so wait until the following day, and shake the test tubes( make sure to cover the opening of the test tube or you will loose your seed). I keep the test tubes ~80°F by putting them in a test tube rack in a 10g aquarium with water and an aquarium heater. So far I have ~90-95% germination rate out of the 50 seeds I did last month.
I just planted two days ago some seeds on sand with dead pine needles, I have them under raw direct sun! (almost direct sun, there's some shade from a roof I made with sticks) I'm trying to see if natural conditions without fancy sphagnum and artificial light can make them grow fast and healthy, also the temperature rises above 30°C in the day and 14°C at night. I'll come back to tell if they die or something.
So you used like a cotton ball and distilled water, was it in a warm humid place? I know you said the roots got tangled but ive yet to get my vft seeds to sprout, thinking of trying your method.
i suggest use a small cut up kitchen towel if you want to see. Distill water itself is good enough to germinate vft seeds. Easier to pick up for transplant later
Hi Kim surn, it should not be dead. watering when the peat is dry but if another 2 weeks it didnt germinate. The seeda could be bad or not properly stored previously. Check out website flytrapcare ya.
@@tishfire Wild, I'm so used to commons having thin hair rather than teeth... though it could 100% just be the fact that it's a baby and the very first trap it ever made. Thank you for being so fast to respond man!
What did I do wrong Bruv I had mine for over a year and they got really massive but never formed Venus teeth or heads, some leaves got spiked at most, and then it just DIED
80 days and the trap is still not complete. Why didn't you film it until the trap grows hair/whiskers (whatever they are called) and its inside turns pink?
on mine the first traps look like a toothbrush, rectangles. one is cupped but the other seedlings are normal, just dont have that curve shape. the plant is not a cup type. so it seems the 1 cup first trap on 1 of my seedlings is just a bad development.
It could have been dormant. I got a "dormant" VFT and pitcher plant from Lowes. It came packaged. It gives you everything needed to plant it. Luckily my VFT was already entering the growing phase. :D
I recently bought seeds off the internet and just planet them and shortly after they seemed to develop a white film around the seed. And that doesn't seem to happen at all here and I looked it up and a lot of things were aiming towards fake seeds. I was just wondering what you think of this? Do you think I got gimped out and got fake seeds?
Might be fake, but I'd grow em anyway just to see. As seen in the video, the first two leaves will be standard seed leaves and the third leave will be an trap leaf. If you don't want to wait for 2 months and then find out you ended up with basil, etc, the seeds should be black, slightly shiny like in the video, tear drop shaped, and less then 1/10th (or similar) of a millimetre in size. If it doesn't meet ALL of the requirements, then it's not a venus fly trap seed.
+Tish Jason Dunecraft is a company that makes kits that are known not to work when you buy the carnivorous plant versions of the kits; like venus fly trap and pitcher plants.
+Napstablook no dunecraft sucks ass and when you try to contact them no ones ever there or when you email them they dont email back it sucks the terrarium is good for keeping humidity but youll have to buy new seeds

Hey, one month ago, I planted my seeds into the peat, I didnt burry it im keeping It wet and a lot of sunlight. But it dont want to grow. Is it dead? =D what would you recommend?
where did you put the seed at? I have a venus flytrap that is about to flower then going to make it give me seed. Want to know where you put it let it grow?
I am also growing several VFT from seed but I think I might have been scammed. My VFT are around 3 weeks old and their cotyledons are not like the ones in the video, they grew about an inch tall, I was expecting them to look like the ones in the video.

It has the hair so it can close

it has hair so it senses when there is a bug in there

Are the seeds supposed to grow little hairs before actually germinating?
Good on ya. My plants have all sprung back to life just recently after a cold dark dormancy.

Squareorigamipiano seed in water and cotton wool, then later sphagnum moss

Not too many people have filmed vft germination time lapse. The ultimate would be seed to fully grown plant, 5 years in a few minutes
Are my Venus flytrap seeds supposed to grow little hairs before actually growing the little brown roots?

Plants are beautiful at time
They take so long because their roots are short and need to feed for growth. So fascinating.
Only me who enjoyed the music then.. Great vid dude

Were they submerged in water when sprouting form the seed?

yes they are formed by a seed ray sharky

In Singapore. Temperature room range 28 to 35°C. Thats what the seeds were at.

Fun fact: UV light is really good for Venus fly traps.

Great job i too preapering to grow them but what the growing material u used?)
Use proper soil mix. Most common is 50% Peat moss and 50% Perlite, or dead sphagnum moss.
Why does your substrate look so slimy?
This is strange-my fly traps seem to have the black bean AND the red spikes on them and it's still growing
80 days and the trap is still not complete. Why didn't you film it until the trap grows hair/whiskers (whatever they are called) and its inside turns pink?
I had limitations on the equipments and access. I had to stop. The hairs inside are trigger hairs, the teeth outside are call cilia.
its so BEUTIFUL!

I started growing a Venus but I’m kind worried because I feel like I put them to deep in the soil
@sabBag-fz6ct They love deep soil as their roots grows deep. The rhizome should be just below the soil surface.
Cool music
I planted 15 seeds a month ago and nothing to show for all the care I give them.
If you want. ask for amd buy fresh seeds and try again :)

no,sphagnum moss
Wow, excellent video and song!! which is it!?
what kind of soil is that? People use other soils, but I've never seen that, what IS that?
This is only for photographing. it's in cotton wool for photo, bad choice as roots entangle.. later it was in sphagnum moss
Tish Jason yeah, I was talking about the soil later on

in a small cup with cotton wool at first for photos. Later transfer to dried sphagnum moss

the white one. Its kind of shocking when you're accustomed to the doctrine of good soil being very dark (:
