This is such an important message. Insulin resistance is often invisible. Our son had markers of metabolic dysfunction even when he was thin and athletic. After a 5 year battle with bipolar disorder, a ketogenic diet resolved all his symptoms. Two years later, he is thriving. He has his mind and his life back.
My adult daughter suffers terribly with bipolar. Hope she will view this video. She has cut off all means of communication with me but I still love her and pray for her. Even in her 40’s she’s still my beautiful child!
This is a great summary of all the exciting things going on in nutrition-based therapies. They work! ❤
Since embracing carnivore, I have been able to manage my depression.
So glad you finally made a new video. I've been searching for you regularly, DrS.
Thank you! More videos are coming soon
Thank you
Love that you talked about leaky brain! My leaky gut and brain was resolved by eliminating all wheat/gluten grains and processed foods. Everyone should be DNA tested for all wheat/gluten/grain sensitivities. Celiac testing is not sufficient, as many people have NON-celiac genetic markers. My DNA showed I have two markers of NCGS, involving neurological, MS and narcolepsy issues. Lots of stress throughout my life but, especially when pregnant with twins 30 years ago, may have caused my twin sons to develop schizophrenia. One took his life at 24 years old, the other has many life challenges. People think just because one is thin, there are no metabolic issues. There is a definite link between diet, metabolic health, and mental health. I see it every day via teen mental health and the SAD diet. The system is too slow to change.
I started doing keto several days ago, and now my restless leg syndrome is almost gone! My body feels less restless, less chaotic. Interesting. I just hope the symptoms of my other conditions also improve.
I think good blood glucose control is critical for all health … health of the body and the brain (“because the brain is part of the body” … as Dr. Edes reminds us 😅). In addition, I think B vitamin optimization is hugely impactful on mental health. Homozygous and compound MTHFR variants run in my family. A lot of dismissal of this concept but taking methylated B vitamins and avoiding folic acid has been life altering with noticeable reduction in anxiety, reduction in obsessive thoughts and improvement in sleep in my family. Would love to see you take a closer look at SNPs like MTHFR and B vitamin deficiency due to other causes and the impact of B vitamins play in mental health.
That maybe why keto works so well it provides a lot of b vitamins.
Exciting channel 💪🙌
9:25 "lactate.. which is a biomarker of metabolic stress"
Well, lactate is a biomarker of the "Warburg effect" in the first place, which is caused by sugar/fructose intake...
Keto and intermittent fasting helped me send prostate cancer into complete remission
Try SGLT2 inhibitor in the research.
Any thoughts on algae, like Spirulina on mitochondrial health?
I'm interested to know the role of Thought in the relationship between mental health and metabolic health (or even individually as unconnected entities).
Hi Brett. Thanks for your comment. Can you explain more about what you're thinking? It sounds like a very interesting topic to dive into.
High fat ruminant meat and salt water no more bipolar no more medication
Has there ever been a study of frontaltedementa and low ketogenic diets?
We aren't aware of a study specifically for Frontal Temporal dementia. But mechanistically, it makes sense it could have similar effects.
Amazing indeed! Any metabolic ketogenic experts you can recomend? Anyone i europe or norway?
I suggest you check these directories to see if you can find someone. www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/doctors and www.diagnosisdiet.com/directory I hope those help!
Is there a test I can ask my Dr to order to test to see if I have brain/blood barrier leakage?
Unfortunately, we aren't aware of any clinically available tests. They are mostly research brain imaging studies at the moment. But hopefully, that will change over time.
Thanks, but this only talks about ketosis. I'm low carb, so it would be nice to have this same topic done with that perspective.
That's a question we hope to explore more. Is low carb enough? Or does having circulating ketones add greater benefit? Or hypothesis is that ketones are key. Hopefully, studies will test that soon. Here's an amazing case report that strongly suggests ketones provide an important added benefit. www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyt.2022.1085512/full
@@metabolicmind Thank you for your reply.
@@metabolicmind Amazing case study - I had come across it the other day and read it with particular interest as my 20mth old daughter has Down syndrome. What stood out most to me was that not only did the patient recover her previous level of function, she INCREASED it as demonstrated by her use of her first ever three-syllable word… at 47 years of age!
@@carolinemcallister1473 Dr Chris Palmer (who is associated with Metabolic Mind) speaks about this here. In short, it’s not just the lack of carbohydrates but the presence of ketones required for this purpose. He cites examples.

How can I do a keto diet as an athlete and gain muscle and improve performance? I feel gassed without carbs
Good question. It all depends on what kind of exercise you're doing and how long you have been keto. For those who still struggle, some can cycle carbs in depending on their training cycle, and some find low carb woks better than keto. It's very individualized, so it's hard to give generic advice. But here are a couple of articles that may help www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/carb-cycling, www.dietdoctor.com/keto-helps-burn-fat-for-fuel-but-hurts-athlete-race-times
I've been doing very well on a vegan ketogenic diet for the past 5 months. I was diagnosed with bipolar one disorder triggered postpartum in 2007. I didn't expect a well-formulated vegan ketogenic diet would wipe out my perimenopause symptoms, but it did. I've lost 45 pounds I gained due to perimenopause & pandemic malaise. Sugar cravings vanished. Night binges vanished. And the need to take afternoon naps vanished! Mental clarity has increased. It's very important to monitor your bipolar meds when beginning the ketogenic diet; my lithium level was affected. Also research electrolytes etc. Don't just jump in!
I've been working with the brilliant Denise Potter, a veteran ketogenic nutritionist who collaborates with The Charlie Foundation and who works with other clients living with bipolar disorder.
I've taken lithium and the MAOI tranylcypromine, since 2013, which have been as life-changing for me as my vegan ketogenic diet.
I'm deeply grateful to the Baszucki Group:

Dyane, we should get you on the podcast to talk about Vegan Keto.
@@jan_ellison_baszucki To be fair, you should have people on the podcast, who are doing the carnivore diet. Many people could have improved their brain function by eating meat only. BTW, Dr. Georgia Ede is publicly know to eat carnivore because of her autoimmune conditions and because it is the only way she can manage her health. And she also has several talks on youtube where she explains how many plant compounds effect negatively brain health...
That's one of the great things about a keto diet. There isn't just one way to do it. It can fit many different "diets." We hope to explore all different variations of therapeutic nutritional ketosis in our content and videos. Thanks!
@@btudrus The nice thing about carnivore is it's one form of ketogenic diet! We have seen people having success with vegan keto as well. Meditteranean keto. Etc. Many different ways to do it, and people can try different approaches to see what works.
@@jan_ellison_baszucki Thanks so much for your comment! I was scheduled to be on Bipolarcast a couple months ago, but my daughter got sick the morning of our recording! :( I'd love to reschedule! Also, I messaged you on Facebook a few months ago and thanks for the amazing work YOU & your family are doing. I can't wait to read your next book!!!
I would be nice if the health care had a clue about diet and Ketosis. Such a Provider is Hard to come by
We're working on that! Dr. Georgia Ede has a fantastic CME course, and Denise Potter and Beth Zupec-Kania have an outstanding dietician training course. We hope to help them and others educate and train more clinicians.
I live in Germany. So it might be acwhile for it to catch on here

Yeah if you go keto and the chronic stress is still present you probably aren't going to drop your blood sugar. Improving your gaba from diet and excercise is probably going to be the primary reason there is improvement
