  • What if symptoms of bipolar disorder are the result of metabolic dysfunction involving our mitochondria? According to the metabolic and mitochondrial hypothesis of bipolar disorder, metabolic interventions like nutritional ketosis (aka ketogenic diet) have the potential to transform outcomes of people living with mental illness.
    Dr. Chris Palmer is a Harvard-trained psychiatrist and world-renowned expert in metabolic psychiatry. He has published numerous papers in prestigious medical journals about the use of ketogenic diets in mental illness therapy. His book, Brain Energy, details a novel underlying hypothesis of the mechanism of mental illness that promises to revolutionize psychiatric care.

      @@metabolicmind Thanks for taking time to reply. Best of luck to you all. The thing that excites me most is the compassionate heart exemplified by your panel at Metabolic Mind. I have been listening, for example, to Dr. Bret Scher for years. He embodies empathy and compassion for the people he serves, and that informs his practice. I would add, despite what is said about the lack of clinical effectiveness of anti-oxidants, that since NAC with Glycine support Glutothiione production,, the most powerful anti-oxidant in the body made BY THE Mitochondria, That this touted supplement combo should be very helpful and consistent with this theory. These aminos are found mostly in animal foods. Go figure. Carnivore for the win!

    Dr. Palmer, thank you for your life-changing work and helping to set people free. I do have a question:
    As we know, the incidence of mental illness amongst youth has increased at an alarming rate, tragically. Yet, one would expect younger people to have better metabolic health than older populations. Therefore, do you think that metabolic dysfunction is the primary driver of mental health disorders amongst young people, or is it something else? Thank you.

      Can the reason be, that parents might give worse and worse diet habits to their children? If eating habits don't change from one generation to the other, compounding with other lifestyle dysfunctionalities, the mental disease in youth can occur sooner.

    • @jesusislord27
      @jesusislord27 Рік тому +2

      @@norbertjanoscsorba38 I agree. It seems highly likely that children are being aversely impacted by poor lifestyle/dietary modeling from parents and the culture, in general. Another aspect worthy of more research is the potential impact that metabolically compromised parents can have on children while still in the womb, particularly during the third trimester.

    The fundamental problem with this is that he doesn’t mention oxygen once. Obviously mitochondria need oxygen to produce energy and if there’s not enough oxygen mitochondria will malfunction. The simple fact of the matter is that doctors are failing to diagnose and treat macrocytosisµcytosis properly. This is because they don’t understand that red blood cells can be macrocyticµcytic at the same time, i.e. folate, B12 and iron deficient at the same time. This means that the size of macrocytic RBC is reduced by its microcytosis, leading doctors to fail to diagnose macrocytosis in predominantly microcytic RBC or microcytosis in predominantly macrocytic RBC. This is the root cause of mitochondrial dysfunction and it’s hiding in plain sight.
    This is all related to inflammation caused by toxins which can’t be detoxified by the body.
    This isn’t a mental disorder: it’s a physical, organic illness.

      Obviously, there’s no admitted evidence in the scientific literature that doctors have been failing to understand basic haematology but the evidence is clear once it’s explained. Just ask anyone diagnosed with B12 deficiency of unknown aetiology how they feel about their treatment. Very few will be happy. That’s because they’ve got undiagnosed&untreated folate deficiency and probably iron deficiency too not to mention many more resulting deficiencies.
