One of the best books on logical fallacies in the modern era is 'Straight and Crooked Thinking' by Richard Thouless. Often you will hear a debater repeating their opponent's ideas in a weird distorted voice and then laugh dramatically. This is a form of ad hominem.
Here are some examples of the 'thought-terminating cliche'.
"Stop thinking so much." - Redirects attention from the topic to the alleged overuse of thought itself.
"It's all good." - Nullifies any possible debate by asserting the issue is already settled.
"Here we go again." - Implies that the cyclical nature of a given disagreement means it will never be resolved.
"So what?" Used to dismiss an individual's involvement in a larger cause on the grounds that one person is too insignificant to ever have a meaningful impact.
"Fake news." - Used to negate the sources of an argument, often while providing misleading information to push an individual's own interpretation.
"Let's agree to disagree." - Used to stop discussion of an issue rather than attempt to resolve it.

I tended to think teachers in grade school were stupid because they were average people, I guess.
But I thought college would be different.
The professors and the students would be the select thinkers.
But I became convinced in college that their mission was to stupefy people and keep them stupid by asserting stupidity and suppressing the truth.
There was no way to get a professional academic certification, or work and promotions without becoming an official, certified advocate of stupidity.
I read of people in almost every profession losing their jobs, losing their certification, and sometimes losing their lives for any findings contrary to the official narrative, or the official agenda.
The entire system was corrupt and all the professions submitted to its lies.
I would sometimes ask in frustration of the other students how they graduated from high school.
They only said it was mean of me to ask such a thing, but I was sincerely baffled that they couldn't think or argue, or understand logic.
How did they expect to be able to work in the real world where some competence would be required of them?

I've never heard anyone ever say " there is no such thing as an authority" (in a debate) I find this is true across the board, because those who claim it, certainly don't have it, or deserve it. I subscribe to that point of view.

    • @bbman10pwns

I think what's even more interesting is that arguments are contingent on having an authority.

"The more blinded our imaginations become, the more susceptible we become to the pernicious content of mass culture" -John Storey
I was recently turned on to your discourses by a good friend of mine (fantastic guitarist of the group 'Tainted Saints' in the Baltimore area) and I wanted to say, in a world of more than 8 billion people, where many tell their loved ones that they are one in a million, there may be 7 other people in this world who think like you.
Your vexation with those unable to grasp the concept of aether, honestly reminds me of the old buddhist saying, "A finger pointing at the moon is just a finger." The greatest fallacy I find myself elucidating to others regards the fallacy of inference. Now, because most people strangely experience a strong aversion to set theory, I constantly have to create analogies (and of course I have to explain that understanding an analogy is not the same as understanding a thing in itself). Par example: Suppose I came to the conclusion that all ravens are black. I search all of North America. I find only black ravens. I travel to Europe, South America, Africa. Heck, even Indonesia! After only finding black ravens, I go back home satisfied in believing there are only black ravens in the world. When I walk into my home and check all my messages, a colleague of mine from Japan has discovered, on the island of Hokkaido, there are actually WHITE ravens (feel free to google them, they are beautiful birds!).
For the longest time I thought people could internalize at least 3rd order logic. That was a fallacy. Most seem to barely be able to internalize 2nd order.
"All animals are under a stringent selective pressure to be as stupid as they can get away with." -Peter Watts
This notion is based on the conclusion that the brain is a survival engine, not a truth detector. My personal passion is cognitive systems science. Lately, I've been focusing on psychophysics, chemical ecology, and the thermodynamics of information. I don't have any peers intellectually capable of understanding antimemetics, yet (sort of a dig against Dawkins). I appreciate your great candor and making concepts in higher level mathematics approachable (differential geometry and complex analysis especially, I mean, who doesn't love fractals). Personally, one of the theses I've been working on is the thermodynamics of bigotry. Once I've created a thesis I am satisfied with I would love for you to break it apart! If I'm never told I'm wrong, I'll always thinks I'm right....
Oh well, I'd like to leave you with a passage from my favorite composer, Frank Zappa:
    Information is not knowledge.
    Knowledge is not wisdom.
    Wisdom is not truth.
    Truth is not beauty.
    Beauty is not Love.
    Love is not Music.
    Music is THE BEST!
(Note: these things are not mutually exclusive)
    Humbly yours,
    -Joe
P.S. Do you have a favorite composer? I also love Igor Stravinsky!

I always wished there was an authority in a debate.
I got in debates in school all the time, often with the professor as well as the rest of the class.
When it became clear to them that I was winning the debate and they had no answers, they would start shouting at me, make threats, etc. The teacher would shut down the discussion at that point, and move on to something else.
I wanted something like a third party referee, who would buzz them and say ad hominem attacks were not admissible, and they must produce a valid argument.
I never had the opportunity to make all my arguments and sow things up tight.
    It was always move on.
Forget that they made no sense, but they were going on with their nonsense anyway.
The professors and the students were usually in league with one another.
So, there could be no debates anywhere.
And no one knew how to debate and arrive at a valid conclusion in the working world or the political world.
I seriously wondered if I would ever be able to make a wife see reason.
I'm glad I didn't have to find out.

Astrology Question. Not the Divination kind but form I've long wanted to repeat an experiment by Rudolph Steiner when I get my land. Certain Plants are classified in Vedic Astrology to certain planets. We clearly see how the Moon affects Plant Growth. I've wanted to record plants growing and see how their appearance changes depending on the revolutions of the Planets. Your antenna analogy has given me an Epiphany. We're Antennas. Our shape has to change depending on the Signal we're trying to pick up. That is possibly why plant shapes change. "Tuning" to the signal" they are trying to receive. Is it worth going down that thought path?

In general I agree with what you said in this video. To learn to read and write is important. To learn some mathematics is important too I believe. To learn about the different kind of sciences is important too because if you don't know something exists then how can you even think about finding information about it.
In regards to fields and energy then I agree with you too that we don't know what it is. In regards to an aether then maybe or maybe not. I am not sure that electric and magnetic forces can't do without. Main reason is as I don't know what it is how can I say that it needs a medium? I do not believe in particles any more. For me it makes more sense that everything are waves of electricity and magnetism probably alternating between the two just like kinetic and potential energy in a pendulum.
In regards to religion then it has the same proof as love and hate. It is a feeling you have that can be so strong that it makes you believe in it but proof is impossible.

  • @ericlee4455
    @ericlee4455 8 місяців тому +1

We definitely live in a universe that exists in a medium. I believe that is why there is a "speed limit" to the speed of light or the propagation thereof. Different medium actually changes the speed of the propagation of light. I define aether as ISP or Infinitely Small Particles inert energy or light. We only perceive.0032 percent of the light spectrum with the naked eye. To detect the aether, you would need a collider the size of the solar system. You have a very keen mind Ken ! I really like your explanations of magnetism. Love your videos!

Ken - any chance you can give us a teachy thing on the "Dialectic"? not just that Hegel thing! More in the frame of the Trivium. Thanx! :)

    • @skaus2184
      @skaus2184 8 місяців тому +1

I'm currently doing a study on the Trivium. I can recommend 'The Classical Trivium', by Marshall McLuhan, and 'The Trivium' by Sister Miriam Joseph. (Get the older version with the black cover). 'Trivium: 21c' by Martin Robinson is an interesting read, though it's an overview of what the Trivium is, and how to build a curriculum around the subject, rather than teaching each individual subject in depth. He has a follow up book, which I'm yet to read. He is also a self confessed Marxist, though he does give a balanced view of both perspectives. McLuhan's book being an overview of the Trivium through different time periods, and Joseph's book being a course in composition, and writing, using the Trivium. Grammar being linked with conservative communication of tradition, and dialectic being linked with liberals challenging established norms. Rhetoric generally being a blending of the two. I'm yet to get to specific texts covering each subject in detail, so cannot make any further recommendations. Another commenter has recommended 'Straight and Crooked Thinking' by Robert Henry Thouless, which certainly looks interesting. Hopefully Ken will give his input.

    • @skaus2184
      @skaus2184 8 місяців тому

@@arcadia1081 There is 'Quadrivium: The Four Classical Liberal Arts' by Wooden Books. I own the Trivium one, and it is aimed at school children, but it's probably worth owning as a reference. I haven't reached Quadrivium study yet, but I'm currently reading 'Approaching the Middle Chamber' by Jaime Paul Lamb. It covers the seven liberal arts from the perspective of the second degree in Freemasonry. I'm only four chapters in, but it is enjoyable so far. There are multiple referenced materials for the Astronomy section. 'Early Physics and Astronomy' by Olaf Pedersen, 'Stowe's Bible Astrology' by Lyman Stowe, being the two that stand out as relevant. As for Astrology, 'Ancient Astrology in Theory and Practice' (2 volumes) by Demetra George, 'Hellenistic Astrology' by Chris Brennan would definitely get you started.
I'll post an update once I've finished the book.
