I have just started listening but I want to say: One of my favorite pieces of media is the first public conversation you two had back on Mind Matters about 9 years ago.
I saw it close to when it aired and more than anything it is for conversations like that, and likely this, that I follow you.
I attended a few of your classes, watched all of your videos up until you got famous and watched all to many after that.
I have been dismayed by, caught up in and sometimes entertained by the controversial and political stuff but you have always been Professor Peterson to me.
Thank you both for sharing your wild philosophizing and love of humanity.
If you find yourself in darker days perhaps you can warm yourself with the knowledge that you helped me to love us all and our historic journey a good deal more.
I love you both, and as always, wish you all the best.

this was an exceptionally engaging conversation. i didn't know Peterson was intentionally recruiting lecturers for Peterson Academy towards the explicit goal of an emergent source of the sacred in the world.
Love hearing about his more grand ambitions like this because they seem hopeful to a revolutionary degree yet are always grounded in and guided by reality. Gives me something noble to imitate.

Oh what a DELIGHT!!! I am so glad that you and John are once again in conversation.
Dearest Dr. Peterson, I was thinking of something I wanted to share with you, if I can find the words. You were talking in a recent interview about what effects your illness had on you and then in the next breath about studying atrocity and I had an intuitive leap. For many years, you put yourself in the place of the perpetrator, the inflictor of agony. And then when you got sick, you felt, in your own body, in your own nerves and sinews, the levels of pain that the victims of those atrocities must have felt. When you could not rest for hours, you were, in your own flesh, at one with the suffering man who carried the load of salt across the compound… and back. You embodied the suffering that you knew yourself capable of inflicting. And that was your memento mori, your hair shirt, your atonement… at one-ment. And perhaps the residual pain you are still experiencing is your hair shirt. And that perhaps your Soviet art served as your hair shirt before you got sick, and you don’t need it anymore.
Fairly grim reflections on my part.
On a more positive note, I think you were spared to us for precisely the times we are in now. As St. Paul said to the Philippians, “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you.”
    With Ruth Anne’s love

I love the new production/editing augmentation of adding images of books and other resources referenced during the interview. Please keep this up! Over multiple interviews, you’re giving millions of viewers a sort of ‘library’ worth owning and reading over time, and the visual cue of the covers helps the books stand out beyond the passing conversational reference, where the titles or authors alone often get lost.

This is a conversation many friends and I have been having for the past eight years because of the theologian Stanley Hauerwas. I kept saying "I wish Dr. Peterson would talk to Dr. Hauerwas" and this conversation, while not exactly the same, gets at many of the same Wittgenstein-inspired ideas about propositional vs. existential truth we've been exploring. Super cool!

I hope this is helpful to anyone reviewing these comments!
Four Types of Knowledge (as defined by John Vervaeke)
    Procedural Knowledge:
Definition: This refers to knowledge of how to perform certain tasks or procedures. It emphasizes skills and abilities rather than simply knowing factual information.
Example: Knowing how to ride a bicycle or play a musical instrument.
    Propositional Knowledge:
Definition: As mentioned, this is knowledge that can be expressed in declarative sentences. It encompasses facts and information that can be justified through reasoning or evidence.
Example: Being able to state that water boils at 100 degrees Celsius under standard atmospheric pressure.
    Perspectival Knowledge:
Definition: This type of knowledge involves understanding different viewpoints, contexts, or perspectives. It includes the ability to see things from various angles and recognize the subjective nature of experience.
Example: Understanding the cultural significance of a practice or recognizing different interpretations of a piece of art.
    Participatory Knowledge:
Definition: This type involves a deeper, embodied understanding gained through active engagement or experience in a context or community. It emphasizes relational aspects and the integration of knowledge through involvement.
Example: Gaining insights about leadership through direct experience leading a team, rather than just reading about leadership theory.

John and Jordan haven't yet seen that a consciousness can't choose what it thinks, nor what it values, nor what its will is. As soon as you see this (and it was 10 years of hear Watts say "You don't control your thoughts. You don't control your feelings" before the implications finally hit me)... you see that control is an illusion.
This thing is a flowering, and we never escape the consequences, but also nothing is in control. And the ego THINKS control is a thing, and thus it can have more, and it goes crazy trying. Hence the solution (if there is one, in a situation in which control is an illusion) is faith: because nothing is up to us.
I left a very long comment on this video going through the thought process in detail, and I think you'd appreciate it. I've wished Jordan would mention Watts for years. We'll see :)

    • @jourdan4am
      @jourdan4am 2 місяці тому +7

I agree with Dr. Peterson to some degree, but when he acts in a way that gives the impression that propositions do not matter, that is the problem Christians seem to intuit when they ask him to make his beliefs known in relation to certain Christian propositions. Also, by avoiding propositions, he avoids accountability because he doesn't have to identify with any particular form of Christianity and their understanding of what a Christian's obligations should be.

I enjoyed listening to Dr Jordan Peterson and Dr John Vervaeke, two great Canadian intellectuals. Good to hear that Dr Vervaeke enjoyed filming his three lecture series for Peterson Academy. Sorely tempted to sign up for Peterson Academy, as one of those 60-something students. Just need to see what secure payment systems are in place for those of us in Europe. I hope Dr Peterson can spend less time on social media, it is not an uplifting experience for the most part and, as he said, the trolls, bots and scammers are everywhere. So many people are glued to their phones, I have to swerve to avoid crashing into them in the street. I was impressed that Dr Vervaeke underwent Jungian psychoanalysis, I'd imagine that there would not be many Jungian psychologists out there these days, cognitive behavioural therapy having been in favour for a good while now.

I have been desperately waiting for you two to get together again. Sequels rarely surpass the originals, yet every once in a while we get a Robocop 2, that isn’t better as an overall film, but it sure was funnier. If you’re taking requests I’d like to see you have a sit down with John Valon once more😮. Ok now I’m going to watch the episode.

Dr.Peterson and Dr.Vervaeke were same university faculty, and they have experiences at science, they are good friend sharing experiences. "Shared experience" is important thing to be friend, so is very brilliant friendship possible, younger people need to learn from this friendship ^^

Jordan, I don’t know if you’ll ever see this…. But I wanted to tell you that I went to see you at the height of COVID with my sister, and we were watching you like a hawk. We were watching to see how you treated people when a pandemic was raging and the societal pressure for you to distance yourself from your fans was immense. You ABSOLUTELY exceeded our expectations and showed us you were who you said you were. You didn’t make people wear masks, you shook your fans’ hands and let them take pictures with you, and you were HIGHLY attentive; listening and understanding people when they answered your questions. It was after these moments that I knew that who I was seeing on my tiny screen was who you actually were. You gave a lot of people hope that day. Thank you for being true to who you say you are. You are a true hero.

That was my experience, too. When I met him, I was too shy at first to go up to him because I was not sure he would be the same in person as he is on camera but he IS. Exactly the same. He was so gentle and tender with this shy one. He set me instantly at ease.

At the risk of sounding pretentious, strangely enough this entire interview reminded me of an old German poem:
    Dennoch kämpfe ich weiter,
    Steh entgegen der Welt.
Kann ich nicht siegen als Held,
Will ich doch fallen als Streiter.

    (Nevertheless, I fight on,
    Standing against the world.
If I cannot win as a hero,
I will still fall as a warrior.)

    - Hermann Hesse, “Älterwerden”, Trost der Nacht. Neue Gedichte (Berlin: S. Fischer, 1929), p.187.

It is not that Vervaeke lost his desire for a community, it is that Vervaeke found his religious community in the Gospel conversations. I'm returning to religion because of these profound, intellectual discussions of the bible.

I think when you say a person is an embodiment of the cosmic order, you are right but then as soon as we affirm it, we know immediately that this is not the whole truth. Something is wrong. Something is broken inside of us. We should be a reflection of the cosmic order but we know we aren't. An inherent awareness of the fall if ever there was one.

You should really have “Whatifalthist” on your podcast. He has a comprehensive knowledge on history and has used that knowledge to help formulate some very real scenarios of where our western as well and eastern civilization is heading within the next 100 years. He’s young but his insight is staggering and would make for a very entertaining episode if you were to speak to him.

I liked his video of why Gen Z should stop bother coping. It included a concept that happenned to me. They may have been exposed to religion. Maybe not. However, they could not believe it.
Whatever positive effect it is supposed to have, many cannot get whatever they are supposed to get.
