I just bought this plane and this video was EXTREMELY helpful !!!! Just did the maiden flight and it performed perfectly. It flies much slower than my Carbon Cub so it will work much better for my granddaughter to learn on which is the reason I bought it. Happy Camper !
I have just bought the Maule M7 and being new to RC was dreading the binding process but thanks to your very well presented demo I am now set to go. Thanks a heap.
This was an outstanding video with easy to follow step by step instructions! Especially important were the checks to ensure that AS3X technology and SAFE Select are both active and working. The aircraft and transmitter instructions fall way short on providing adequate instructions to properly bind the aircraft to the transmitter.
Thanks a lot, I flew my RC valiant today and crashed it. Turns out that my SAFE system was not engaged. Now I gotta get a new prop. Now I can fly my plane with comfort knowing that the safe system does all the hard work.
In subject matter that could be very confusing, this video was very clear. Excellent video, attempting to cover every possibility and scenario/combination. Well done. Will help me when I finally get my UMX Timber up in the air. Thanks
Finally someone who explains it right so folks who did not grow up with a PC in the crib will get it to. The TX Horizon manual is hard to understand confusing at best. Who ever writes those manuals thinks that everyone knows as much as they do.
Very grateful for the accurate and useful information. This explains my near disaster with a brand new plane. It was bound in AS3X and not SAFE mode. I will try again!
Wow! I have the UMX turbo Timber and love it . But for a year now I've had the clipped wing cub and I knew something wasn't right . I just had no confidence that the reciever was working in safe. Now I know why. With in 10 mins of watching your video I had it working correctly ! Man I wish I had seen this earlier.
Nice presentation - I especially liked the simple check on which position the SAFE select switch was in. One clarification: you "recommend" binding to a "new" model in the Tx memory. The fact is, you cannot bind an AR636(A) Rx to anything other than a fresh, default model in the Tx. Tried it... then read the manual. ;-)
Finally ans explanation I understand. Leave it to Horizon to continue great customer support. I dinged my Valiant recently (my fault) thinking I had SAFE activated when I did not.
This is a great video thank you Kyle. Iv just purchased a nx6 and ordered a carbon cub s2+ I've put safe on the radio from the pre installed. Can you tell me do I just bind the plane to the radio in the safe set up please. Very sorry I'm new at this plus I'm a 64 years young and need a hubby. Thank you
This is the video I've been looking for! Very informative about activating SAFE. Why this info isn't in the aircraft manuals I don't know. I have a Carbon Cub S+ and the manual doesn't make it clear out this process and not even a mention of the type of transmitter required if you add the flaps option. This is meant as a beginners plane and up so details would be useful.
The Carbon Cub S+ is actually different as it does NOT use SAFE Select. It uses progressive flight modes in conjunction with the GPS system. SAFE gets assigned to whatever switch is set as GEAR in your transmitter. Also, for information on adding flaps: ua-cam.com/video/5OUfkwkQMEo/v-deo.html
Hello, I have a question, the button with which the safe is activated or deactivated must be assigned in the transmitter, and another question, this procedure also applies to gas or glow models
Technically the "SAFE button" is programmed in the receiver. The receiver simply looks for what function corresponds to that on your transmitter. So, if SAFE is setup to be AUX 2, the receiver will always look for AUX 2 on any/all radios bound to it.
Another important question: when do you adjust the Gain rate for the Safe Select. You can adjust from 0 - 100% for the Aileron, the same for the Elevator, and the same for the Rudder! When do you adjust? Before the Binding process?
What a super video. I was having loads of problems trying to bind my Spektrum DX8 G2 to an E-flite Carbon Cub S with Safe. The secret was to REMOVE the bind plug from the plane BEFORE turning on the transmitter. What does it not say this anywhere else???
@@horizonhobby Please look at page 11 of the DX8 G2 manual. It clearly states that the bind plug is removed last which is incorrect. It fails to bind if you follow those instructions. I would attach a screenshot but can't.
This doesn’t seem to work on my aero scout.. no matter what I do it stays in safe on my spectrum DX8. I can’t even assign the switch to toggle it like you did.
Thank you for your knowledge I had set everything up flaps, duel rates, throttle cut. Could not assign a change El and I have turbo timber evolution umx it automatically set safe on ch 5 gear which neither planes have. I found out when I accidentally bumped the switch mid flight and crashed (umx model) I replaced the fuselage and it's ready to go! TANK YOU KYLE!
Brand new P 39 binds fine but won't accept a switch selection to turn off SAFE. I'm doing it right and have done this with many other planes, but this plane wont accept a switch selection so I can't turn SAFE off.
This video is a very good primer, but it is NOT for the newer Forward Programmable (FP) Rxs. It's for the AR636 and possibly the AR6335, NOT the AR637T and other SRXL2 SAFE Rxs. I know this video came out before the SRXL2 Rxs came out. That "A" switch is the one most pilots I know use for retracts. So I use Switch G for my Receiver flight modes (FM) assignments. Spektrum didn't distinguish between Rx and Tx FMs. They are different and very confusing if you don't distinguish which one you're talking about. Some AR636s have a remote port available, while others do not.
Thanks dude! Im new to this and i got a turbo timber. It worked! My question is. Do i have to do this every time i change batteries? And how do you call that extension for plugging the bind plug from the bottom? Thanks
I'm using an older DSM2 radio, I've followed the SAFE binding and switch assignment procedure (gear channel set to +/-100 end points), but there is no change when flipping the switch. I noted at the start of the video you only mentioned DSMX radios, is that why I can't use SAFE?
What channel is used ? Don't you have to assign your selected switch to a channel BEFORE you do the BIND ? for example assign switch A to channel AUX 2 or AUX 2 or AUX 3 etc ?
Is this still true for new models? I have an Apprentice with an A3230 flight controller, and it won't bind to my DX8. Does anyone have a manual for the A3230?
Yep. Learned the hard way after I had maidened my Timber X 1.2m even after checking the control surfaces and the TX switch, SAFE didn't take. I still had a successful maiden and flight, it's just that my landing wasn't.
When assigning switch A on a Spektrum DX6 Transmitter, I see under Digital Switch Setup, 0= +100% and 1= -100%, maybe it's backward but still the same values. The documentation for the AS3X receiver manual states that the switch should be setup to positive (+)100% in both position 0 and 1. Which is correct?
Great video explanation. I have a 2019 Timber1.5... not a turbo. I am using a Spectrum DX6. I can't get my A switch to take the assignment for the mode change. I have followed the video precisely. It stays in safe. Any advice.
Thanks for the demonstration. I have a Taranis X9D Plus (original) with a DM9 DSM2 module. I've managed to map Safe Select to a switch on my Turbo Timber when I bought that a couple of years ago, but on my new Extra 300 I can't get it to work. It will bind correctly (control surfaces wags twice) but when I try to map it to a switch it just toggles Safe Select on, and if I try to map it to the same switch again it toggles it off. It won't let me toggle it on and off once I've mapped it to the switch. The switch is on channel 5 and the DM9 module is running at CH1-8, 22.5 ms, 400u, -
New hobbiest here. The manuals assume you know things. For instance, the Apprentice STS doesn't need a bind plug as it has Safe built-in on beginner and Intermediate modes. So you do not have to follow this video. (Or buy a bind plug) Also, not in the manual on the bnf, your receiver has a "bind switch" you have to push to put the plane into binding mode (think turning on bluetooth to broadcast a signal). This button is an itty bitty pin-head button you almost need a microscope to see (look for the two antenna inside the plane body and follow them down to the receiver, it is on the face of the receiver). Push that button, it will begin to flash, then press the bind button on your controller and hold it while you power on the controller. The plane should start to "dance" indicating it has bound. Also not in the manual, when binding to the dx8e, the bind button automatically becomes a panic button. So as you are flying, if you get into trouble, press and hold that bind/panic button which will engage safe. Release it to disengage safe. Safe will always be on in beginner and in Intermediate (but allows a bit more banking). Safe is off on experienced mode. You can test this by flipping the plane over while in experienced, press the bind/panic button, the plane should dramatically try to right itself. Also while flipped and in experienced switch your toggle to beginner (0) and it should again try to dramatically right itself. Also newbies get the Real Flight simulator (this plane is in the newest version ) it is very realistic and helps tremendously. Hope this helps!!! Happy flying!!! Xoxo
Excellent video,. However I bought the Commander with Safe Select and when I plug the battery in there are supposed to be tones indicating the ESC recognizes the LVC. Mine makes no sound and SAFE doesn't work. Can you help?
Awesome video thanks helped me out alot I'm new to fixed wing I'm a drone guy started with aeroscout now just got the 30mm a10. You awnsered my question about the difference between as3x and safe slept thank you
Why does the trim settings change when switching from SAFE to ASX3? It can be seen around 5:00 in this video I have 4 planes and the all do it. The amount of trim change is a little different for each plane. If you have the plane trimmed in SAFE and wanting to lean to fly with it off you can be in for a big change when you switch SAFE off. Such as the plane dive and turn left. There should be trim settings for each mode both SAFE on and SAFE off so there is no change in flight. Am I over looking something?
Scotty Norris I hope you figured this out by now. Yes, you need to do the setup in the transmitter before you do the bind step. Then follow the steps in the video with the bind procedure depending if you want SAFE on or not. Which plane did you get?
@@GrotrianSeiler I bought a turbo timber, and timberX, I set the program, and binded them, they both fly great, the X is different being my first 3d, but I'm learning how to fly it! I did break a prop landing, came in a little fast and nosed into the ground
I have a Sky Surfer from Blitz RC that I bought years ago but never flew...I have since lost the TX for it. A friend lent me an AR636A receiver to see if this old bird would fly. I can't get the RX to bind to my DXs TX that I got when I purchased an AeroScout. Can you tell me why?
Thankyou for this, poss the wrong place to ask but I’ve bought a viper edf bnf, I have a dx6i. Will I still be able to set the landing gear and the 6th ch as my safe switch? I ask because I’m very new to flying, I’ve got a carbon cub but to use the flaps I’d need a 7th ch. I’m just checking that’s all because of the gps and my 6ch transmitter will be able to do safe mode and retracts on my new viper. Thanks in advance
At 3.54 you say that a plane with AR636 receiver will already have safe select programmed in and that a store bought AR636 will not, and then how to check. I have installed an AR636 into a plane, all surfaces are correct and I get the double waggle on start up suggesting safe is present. I have assigned stick A as per your toggle instructions but it's unsuccessful. can you advise please.
Hi and thank you for a Great tutorial. I have the aeroscout setup from the manual on my dx6 ready to bind with safe but do I need to assign safe to the flightmode switch by toogling the switch still or is it pre set for that 3 pos flightmode switch? The manual is unclear about that..
Ok, absolutely great video, but Ive got some questions/issues. Just purchased a brand new Eflite Timber X, pre installed receiver etc. Also a brand new Spektrum DX8 Gen2. Fully charged batteries on both. I was able to bind the TX to the airplane using the “safe” method, but after doing the safe switch assignment, I get no change. Im also not getting any AS3X corrections when I tilt the airplane. To top it off, when I hit the stick for the airlerons, on the right side the flap moves in conjunction with the airleron, the left side the flap stays in place. I tried to assign a switch to the flaps for %50 and %100, and it wouldnt “take”. What did take however, was the elevator moving down a very small amount in the first position of the switch. Im beyond confused, because the airplane manual and the TX manual seem to give different instructions. Id really appreciate some help! Thanks!
I tried to set this up with a Eflite Commander 1.4m. Got the double tap with binfding, Setup for switch A on channel 7. Setup forward programming. With safe on or off the plane tries to right itself when inverted. Any ideas? I already did a software update to the receiver.
Have the Turbo timber . DXs controller. The flaps go down right when plugging in the battery, to get them up I have to press the bind button the entire time , How can I fix that ?
I set up my flaps and throttle cut into the model already but have not binded the new Valiant. Does my flap/thr cut set up affect the ASX3/Safe or only the switch being used for Safe should be all factory settings? Thanks
I followed all instructions and removed the binding plug after the first signals. I then used the bind button on the DX8 transmitter to bind the AR637TA receiver with the transmitter. Then I programmed a three way switch on the transmitter with five times activation and the stick positions to SAFE mode. The AS3X mode is activated in SAFE mode, but when I switch to the non-activated SAFE mode I can no longer see the compensating movements of the ailerons when I move the model. Have I missed something?
Does the nose and tail need to be level or does the plane need to be on a flat and level surface when initializing the AS3X system? There seems to be a controversy in local flying club. Thank you.
I have just purchased a PNP plane and want to instal a 6 channel Spektrum AR630 AS3X (with SAFE) receiver into it to (hopefully) bind with my DX6i radio. Will this be possible? If yes, what switch would you recommend I use?
so my plane whit a dxs controller added wont waggel when I do the bind. but when I tip it over it reacts like safe is working. but cant change level settings. havent flown yet.
I have the transmitter from the aeroscout.dxs.will i be able to bind it to the turbo timber and have the flaps?i will have also 3 levels of safe like the aeroscout?
Hi Kyle, Perhaps you can guide in me the right direction. I bought the Apprentice STS BNF 2 weeks back and then bought the SPMA3173 GPS Module. I have tried binding exactly the way you suggested for Safe Select. When I start the plane, the elevators wag up and down a few times and then level off. The ailerons then start wagging up and down one at a time and just keep going and going. The sticks do not work as the GPS module is not connecting. Tried with a DXe/DXs and the NX6 Controller. Same result.Any suggestions? Many thanks.
I have a spektrum DXeS transmitter from the aeroscout RTF will this bind to an e-flight Conscendo evo or turbo timber for example I plan on a DX6E soon but if mine will bind Id like to use it thanks great vid 👍🏻
Can you bind AS3X and Safe functionality with the DX9 Black 9-Channel DSMX Transmitter and the AR8010T DSMX 8-Channel Air Integrated Telemetry Receiver? Thanks.
Hi, interesting video, too bad it doesn't work for me. I bought the cirrus with ar636a receiver and radio spectrum ds7s, once the binding is done it only emits three tones for one time, so the safe system does not work. I've tried all sorts of ways to no avail. What can I do? Thanks if you answer.
I bought the ar636 with as3x put it in my plane but no matter what I do i can't get safe select using a dx9 tx my question is is it only available in bnf planes. Regards Tony from Australia
With the AR636 would would have to "steal" an existing model profile that comes with safe, then "conform" it to your plane. We don't really recommend it. This is why we made this process much easier on the AR637!
i am new with spektrum, i am trying to bind my new conscendo evolution BNF with my new Dx8e and i have servo control but AS3x is not active and no safe select either, need tech support?
How can we setup AS3X Ar636 receiver from BNF model to another model?? I did the same settings which you said but only binds as normal receiver, no safe mode nor any gyro works?? Please help me out, I was using rarebear BNF receiver into multiplex funracer, thank you 🙏🏽
I tried this on my F-27 and it didn't work. I looked thru the manual and found a setting 3-axis gyro. when I turned it on the switch worked turning safe select on and off. Is this right or did I do something wrong in the setup?
This is nuts. Why isn’t any of this described in my new 250CFX with SAFE technology (as opposed to SAFE Select) manual? The manual suggests that the SAFE functionality is already enabled with a designated panic button, which is a function of the transmitter model number and its associated programming page in the 250CFX manual. For example the programming page in the 250CFX manual for my DX7s indicates that the gear switch is assigned to the SAFE level and the bind button to the panic mode. But there are Three levels in the SAFE system. Why don’t the instructions call for the use of the 3 position flap switch? How does one toggle through the three levels of SAFE using the two position gear switch? Something is wrong here. Furthermore, the servos only go through an initial configuration move ONCE regardless of whether I remove the binding plug quickly or just leave it in. When I remove the binding plug quickly after initial receiver power on and attempt to select a SAFE on/off switch according to this videos instructions, nothing happens. Additionally as I stated above, the is no way to turn off SAFE. Please respond. Thank you. The servos do attempt to correct for inverted or extreme attitude of the helicopter and the bind button does cause the servos to move wildly. But as far as which level of SAFE the model is in I have no idea. The servos move at the same rates regardless of the gear switch position.
If you bind in Safe mode, and select the AS3X to fly can you program the AS3X position for gain and expo? Also If on a 3 position switch, do you end up with a Safe mode and 2 AS3X channels or a safe, you recovery, a AS3X and a open/blank channel???a Thanks.

Thanks I need this information, because it's my first bnf, starting off with rtf version unit my skills advanced
Do I need to set the program first in my dx6e , before I bind? This is new to me and all flying club's are to far away for help
Good info, thank you. Is it the same with DXs transmitter?
Is the panic button the same thing as the safe switch?
Trying to get help, my plane does two shutters but picking a button it doesn’t work
Awesome video!! Thanks for the info. Hope this will fix my problem with the DX6i transmitter that was given to me.
Great video! Thanks for clarifying all the questions I had.
My DX8 will not bind to the plane without the plug in? I can't get it in safe mode? Any suggestions?
Hi There! I tried it with my AR636A, but something went wrong. Is it maybe possible, that the AR636(A) with the A at the end is not programmable?
I have a Sky Surfer from Blitz RC that I bought years ago but never flew...I have since lost the TX for it. A friend lent me an AR636A receiver to see if this old bird would fly. I can't get the RX to bind to my DXs TX that I got when I purchased an AeroScout. Can you tell me why?
Very good video, thanks. Is it possible to set the fail safe so that if the plane goes into fail safe the safe switch goes to the safe on position ?
Well worth watching and even saved for future reference. Better than good job, me think. :) Thanks so much.
Have the Turbo timber . DXs controller. The flaps go down right when plugging in the battery, to get them up I have to press the bind button the entire time , How can I fix that ?
i really needed this video, cleared up alot of confusion!
Glad to hear it! Let us know if you have any additional questions!
I tried to assign safe select a switch for my Maule M-7, but it would not work. Any tips?
Does the nose and tail need to be level or does the plane need to be on a flat and level surface when initializing the AS3X system? There seems to be a controversy in local flying club. Thank you.
The plane must be set on a flat level surface. You do not need to hold the tail up to level the plane.
If you hold up the tail, it's going to dive into the ground.
Can I bind an AS3X receiver to an FR Sky transmitter? Will I have to get a different module?
Can you explain how you select the switch on the controller?
My twin otter didn't come with a bind plug. Where can I get one?
Dose this go for DXs transmitters to or just the ones with the screens?
Can you bind AS3X and Safe functionality with the DX9 Black 9-Channel DSMX Transmitter and the AR8010T DSMX 8-Channel Air Integrated Telemetry Receiver? Thanks.
No, SAFE hardware/software is only built into the AR363 and AR637 at this time, unfortunately.
I have the e flite extra 300 and i dont have any bind plug in it and i dont know how to get safe select ( i have the bnf version)
It took me a couple of days to figure this out. I tried and tried and nothing. Apparently you have to assign the corresponding switch letter to Aux.
How can we setup AS3X Ar636 receiver from BNF model to another model?? I did the same settings which you said but only binds as normal receiver, no safe mode nor any gyro works?? Please help me out, I was using rarebear BNF receiver into multiplex funracer, thank you 🙏🏽
Cool, just got the night timber x and after racking my brain on programming dx8 I had to be sure....awesome products and fun beyond belief
Perfect demonstration. Thanks.
You are welcome!
Great video very Informative 10/10
If you bind in Safe mode, and select the AS3X to fly can you program the AS3X position for gain and expo? Also If on a 3 position switch, do you end up with a Safe mode and 2 AS3X channels or a safe, you recovery, a AS3X and a open/blank channel???a
Thanks.
