- Spektrum AS3X for Newbies!
The Horizon Hobby/Spektrum AS3X for Newbies video discusses the unique Spektrum AS3X stabilization system for RC planes. In addition, I'll discuss the SAFE select system that builds on AS3X and provides autopilot flying functions for your RC model airplane.
AS3X stand for Artificial Stabilization 3 axis. AS3X uses advanced sensors and software to instantly detect aircraft movement in the sky due to turbulence, wing tip stall, torque, etc. and provide instant control surface correction. The effect is a smoother and more "locked in" flight control feeling, allowing for a more natural a connected flight experience.
I will demo how AS3X works on an E-flite Pitts RTF micro model.
Horizon Hobby planes use AS3X, along with other brands under the Horizon Hobby logo. Key item is to see AS3X on the RTF RC planes box or receiver.
AS3X comes ready to use for a RTF airplane. With an "open stock" receiver, the AS3X system needs to be activated and set. This can be done with a smart phone and bluetooth technology.
SAFE technology is an autopilot assist for an AS3X model. There are various modes of SAFE to include "panic" recovery, GPS fencing, loiter and autoland.

Mark: Many thanks! Tim
I have flown RC aircraft for decades, but am new to electrics. This video is the absolute best explanation of AS3X and SAFE that I have seen. Thank you and congratulations on an outstanding job.
Bill: Great to hear! Tim
Thanks for this concise review of AS3X and SAFE. Spektrum’s doc’s aren’t written for newbs like me. Your vid very much cleared up for me what these tech’s are and what they are for.
Steve: Thanks for checking in! Tim
Thanks for explaining this information.. I flew Nitro many years ago and just coming back to the hobby and having a blast with the electric planes and as3x technology.. Your video answered many questions I had about it all.. Thanks for sharing !! I subbed..
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing explanation for someone getting back into the hobby! Thank you!
Brad: No worries, thanks for checking in! Tim
Great information. Thanks for making a video on the subject.
Hangar: Hey, thanks for checking in! Tim
Another great video! Thanks! I was was just thinking this eve about "maybe I should learn about this AS3X". Like your presentation style in how you introduce things, get in the detail, and summarize. 👍
Subscribed.
Gary: Glad it was helpful! Tim
Hey Tim glad to see the Pitts flying! Cheers!
👍🏻 Tim
Terrific! So many good points. Thank you.
Garry: Many thanks! Tim
This helps a lot. Ive been flying R/C for 35 years (Took 10 years off), now days its way different. No Cox, WenMac, Nitro. Its all new to me. I dont care for this fangled stuff but my son sure does so Im trying my best to embrace it. Great Vid.
Frank: Glad the video helped! Tim
Thanks for another great video, you have helped my son and I immensely
Mike: Glad to be of help! Tim
Good information.
I hope you get your 12k subscribers soon after the new year. All the new “Christmas” RC pilots can benefit greatly from your channel as I have.
Merry Christmas Tim. Wishing you and your family health and prosperity in the new year.
Thank you for the video.
Michael: Many thanks for your kind words! I have a lot of fun with the channel thanks to folks like you. We get around 300 subscribers a month, should hit 12,000 shortly! Merry Xmas, Tim
Had no idea as3x was a go between, between safe and normal, now I know, thank you Sir.
Now if i could just get HH to supply me with a data sheet to show me what these BNF templates are actually changing in the programming templates.
I mean i didn't even know what switch my Safe, AS3X were assigned to.
I mean I thought AS3X was normal flight mode, now I understand with your help why they put it on a 3 position switch!
Thanks again, take care 😊 18:24
Don: Thanks for checking in! Tim
When I got back into the hobby I flew a P-51 made by Volentex RC, it had a (knockoff) SAFE mode that worked very well for such a small aircraft and helped me build my skills. The aircraft had a intermediate mode which allowed full control of the elevator but not the airleons and I used that for more advanced flight. Unfortunately with the models being about 400mm in wingspan they were too unstable to fly without stabilization and I moved on from that aircraft.
All good! Tim
Great video!!
😊👍🏻 Tim
Thank you sir, I now better understand the three safe modes built in my planes and how they add too or are different from basic AS3X
Great!! Tim
Great Video ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Many thanks! Tim
A dinky Pitts Flies ! amazing ! AS3X and Safe sure change RC flying . Wish they could make the plane fly back to you and cut the throttle if connection is lost or a panic button if you lose orientation .
AS3X really works! Tim
Zohd kopilote lite
Have you seen an RC pulled a chase camera like Powered paragliders use? Lighter version?
Brad: I have not. Tim
Thanks Tim! I can’t get to forward programming on my umx pitts? Do I need to update my esc or is that just how the umx pitts are?
FD: Not sure on this one. Please chat with tech support at www.HorizonHobby.com. They should be able to assist. Tim
I like safe because if I’m doing a high speed pass or lose orientation I won’t crash
EN: Fair enough! Tim
I honestly think as3x makes it much bumpier and unstable in the wind with umx planes.
Unless i only have faulty servos?
I'm speaking of the umx waco.
I’ve had good luck with AS3X on several, all smaller models. Seems to help a lot on windy days. Tim
I would use that as a back up when making mistakes. Do you have an on flight enable/disable from the transmitter option?
AB: I do not have this function. Tim
@@TimMcKay56 Thanks, I'll see if there's a workaround.
👍🏻 Tim
I would like to know if there is a way to turn the LAS on a Carbon Cub S2 on and off from a NX6 transmitter?
No idea. Do ask on www.RCGroups.com They seem to have answers for any question. Tim
Tim I have another question for you I'm building another guillos model and the receiver I'm using is the one for the WL toys Cessna f949s which includes stabilization which can be switched on and off by the receiver by the transmitter if I shut off the stabilization will I be able to orient the receiver board on the side of the airplane like I wanted to or does it have to be laid flat on the fuselage? I don't know if it has anything comparable to as3x if that's the case does that mean it's always on even in the unstabilized mode in which case I guess I have to lay the board flat on the fuselage. Do you get the gist of my question? I can't seem to get an answer anywhere else thank you
George: I am not sure of technical details.
Maybe continue with experimentation as you are doing. Tim
My thanks for the info - belated in my case as it is your video which has finally informed as to why I cannot set up AS3X on my AR637R receivers. Being new to the hobby I thought ALL AR637R receivers had AS3X built in. Is there anything I can do other than spend even more hard earned cash?
Anne: Not sure. Your best bet is to pose your question on www.RCGroups.com They seem to have answers for every topic. Tim
@@TimMcKay56 Thanks Tim.
@@TimMcKay56 Thanks Tim- alternatively I'll just learn to fly better!
What effect does AS3X have on squirrely ground handing taildraggers? Does is it help with takeoffs?
Not sure on the takeoffs, may depend on the model. Seems to kick in once the model is airborne. Tim
So does the AS3X on its own change the flight characteristics at all?
DJ: No, AS3X has no effect at all on flight characteristics. Works completely in the background, really is magic. Tim
What a great field!
The material used for the runway, what is it?
Jato: Yes, it is a great place to fly. Runway is a very tough fabric material stretched over the grass, works great. Tim
Man I really miss my UMX Pitts
Nicos: It is a good flyer! Tim
Hay tim you ever tryed to build a Q-tee
RH: No I have not. Good idea! Tim
they should rename the SAFE mode "WSO." You USAF 2-seat fighter guys know what I'm talking about.
Larry: Wise words . . . and thanks for checking in! See ya, Tim
PROBLEM: All the servos used must be digital NOT analog !! I have lots of models with analog servos rendering AS3X useless !
Lew: Great point, thanks for sharing! Tim
