David Tepper 'too involved' after Frank Reich firing - Mike Florio | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC
/ nflonnbc
My man Florio putting that work in even at the airport lol
i wish he wasn’t so ridiculous but he definitely works hard
"Hey, Buddy, do you mind? I'm trying to take a nap here!"
People around him like “why is this guy yelling im trying to sleep on this layover”
"work"
Old man Florio on the grind 💀 ain’t no excuses for the young folk 😂
Let's be clear m Florio is an extreme left winger. He hates "billionaires" and "the rich". So this Panthers stuff is just a way for him using it as an excuse to attack a billionaire
I'm a falcons fan and I feel sorry for them. Tepper is just the epitome of a rich guy without a pulse on things
I was telling a falcons fan the other day how fortunate the team is to be owned by Arthur Blank. He's a gentleman, puts the players first, and allows his coaches space and his GM's the discretion to do their jobs. Ever since Jerry Richardson was me-too'd and Tepper took over, we saw this Tepper Train Wreck coming.
Imagine being at the airport and seeing Florio do a live segment at the terminal on his laptop.
Yep! and he's talking loud too Lol
As a Browns fan who is surviving the Haslams, my sympathies to Panthers fans everywhere.
Colts fan here. I feel your pain.
Tepper is on a trajectory to be the new Daniel Snyder.
He’s probably spying on the male cheerleader locker room
01:40 - “But he went along, you go along to get along and then you’re long gone” 😂
As a Panthers fan, I still believe that Bryce Young can be good in this league, but BY needed last year's team to play for him. Meaning Steve Wilks should still be in charlotte, where we were playing smashmouth football and going play action with Sam Darnold. He needs receivers that he can depend on. Florio is right and this may be why Wilks didn't get the job because he wasn't going to "go along, to get along" Personally, i dont think Tepper will learn his lesson and will play with another shiny toy in going after Jim Harbaugh or Lincoln Riley..smh
Bryce wouldnt have been qb for wilks as wilks was putting best peronnel out their because they represented his ability as a coach meaning bryce wouldnt play over dalton because bryce isnt better than dalton. I feel for Frank but im glad Wilks wasnt in this situation because this would have buried his career having to stints like that on his resume. As a head coach. he deserves better so does frank.
Bryce may finally be the nail in the coffin of small QBs. My 30 years of sports fandom there has been 1, 1 under 6ft QB whose been franchise. Drew Brees is an anomaly, Bryce is the majority. He's never going to be a franchise QB because he's just too tiny. He's the tiniest of them all too, dudes smaller than me and I'm a dinky man.
@@joshlewis575 yes but the thing is bryce is small and slow with no strong arm. he is the most lacking number 1 pick i think ive ever seen in any sport. all his supposed strengths are mute in the NFL. i mean the NFL doesnt get easier either. As he looks worse every game because there is so much tape on him and his tendencies. they know the passes he is willing to throw and wont. they know the space he like to throw to with wr they are really boxing this man he has no tangibles. go look back at the draft it was all intangibles "processing" and "leadership" man i want a baller. he wasnt even the best passer that was stroud why he translated so well to the NFL. he doesnt have the speed required or elusiveness. to do what he did in college with the best football Athletes.
@@joshlewis575 bingo, its like trying to be a lineman at 200lbs. it just doesn't work
Slow and no strong arm? Just say you've never watched him play.@@jaypta2225
We need more airport content from Florio
Just remember with the Frank Reich Firing, he wanted to draft CJ Stroud and the owner wanted to draft Bryce Young.
We all know that, hence, did you watch the video?😐
Tepper's a stooge. Panthers wont win anything as long as he owns that team.
Wrong Reich wanted young
@@EnterpriseNCC-1701 Sometimes people comment before watching, did you not learn forward thought?
Don't forget the scouts were Also salivating over Richardson and his physical attributes.
Tepper has made this franchise even more dysfunctional than my Raiders. Thanks Mr. Tepper.
David Pepper is the new Daniel Snyder. Because you made a ton of money in some other field doesn't mean you can be a successful sport's team owner.
Yes, Tepper too involved. Should of been patient. Should of kept Steve Wilks!!!
Agree
I said the same thing
Tepper has to understand stuff doesn't just turn on a dime because you want it too. It takes minimum of 2-3 years to turn a dumpster fire into something competitive. Perfect example. Kyle Shannahan and the 49ers. We were 0-9 his first year, before CJ Beatheard beat the Giants. Then we stunk again, until Jimmy G. came in and beat the last 5 teams on the schedule, fooling everyone into thinking he was ' the ' QB.
Kyle's not faultless either, he passed up an opportunity to scout Deshawn Watson, and Patrick Mahomes because his plan was getting Cousins at the end of the year. Things happen at the deadline and suddenly Jimmy G. is in the building destroying his plan of ever getting Cousins. Sticking him with a mediocre QB for the next 5 years. They continually built up the team around him. Going to a superbowl and 3 of 4 NFCCG's during that time.
Panther's not going to be anything but a laughing stock, until Tepper learns like Jed had to, you don't fire 4 coaches in 4 years and wonder why your product sucks.
Or Ron Rivera, really.
Trust me as a cardinals fan, you don’t want Steve Wilks. I’m sure he’s got better but that was the worst year to endure as a cardinals fan .
I always enjoy your comments, Mike, you are fast becoming my favorite go to source for everything NFL!
He is pretty much the only one I still listen to.
No Days or Hours off Florio in the building
Tepper easily becoming the worst owner in the NFL. Egomaniac that thinks he knows football better than the people who've done this their entire lives. If Tepper didn't meddle so much and allowed Reich to go after Stroud we would be in a completely different place. Everytime I see Bryce on the field he looks scared and overwhelmed!
It’s not Bryce’s fault mate… Daniel Jones also looked scared and overwhelmed this year lol. It comes down to the Offensive Line and receivers getting open.. Bryce has none of that so it’s not his fault. He hasn’t even looked that bad. It’s not on Bryce. He’d be flourishing as a QB with a functional offensive line and receivers who get open lol
Typical hedge fund guy. Thinks he's always the smartest guy in the room on any subject.
Youd STILL b ein the same place and CJ Stroud would look like a bust instead. The ORGANIZATION a #1 pick Qb goes to matters a lot.
Frank has been the head coach of two teams, Indy and Carolina. After this disaster-thon I can say without pause there will be no Third Reich.
Frank made the mistake of accepting the job in two bad situations; The Colts because the talent was so lacking and the Panthers because the interference of ownership.
Frank will make a comeback....That's just what he does.
@charlie-obrien I agree but he also had Andrew Luck before he retired and went to the playoffs in 2020 but now he will have to reinvigorate himself as an OC somewhere and produce consistently on the field to get another look at HC but the Panthers situation wasn't fair to him.
I see what ya did there 😅
😬oh no you didn’t 😂
The colts had a great defense and Andrew Luck. He benefited from that. My dad would complain so much about Reich’s play calling. Going for in on 4th when they can get the easy 3 or not running the ball with Jonathan Taylor.
Holy hell, Florio admits to being wrong!! Now that's a headline!
Florio’s patented “talking with hands” begins at 00:40. I think he was a little nervous to break out the hands in the airport, but then he clearly went with “this is who I am, watch me roar” ( or hand talk)
There once was an owner I’ll call Tepper,
On his coach’s wounds he liked to pour pepper.
Drafted the wrong guy,
Fans did indeed sigh.
No coach takes the job unless he’s a leper.
My man Mike. Workin workin workin.
Who's gonna want to work for David Tepper? Whoever wants that cheddar.
It appears he learned absolutely nothing from his time as a minority owner of the Steelers.
I deal with this attitude in outside sales, people somehow correlate making money or having an advanced degree with common sense and logic which very few have any of.
I love the fearlessness to do a segment at the Airport. Gotta think he does LGA if he is going to to PIT.
Dang! Mike is telling it like it is. That is refreshing.
Dead on analysis as usual Mike! Sadly Tepper will have surrounded himself with nothing but sycophants saying the exact opposite...poor Panthers fans!
David Tepper is not going to attract high value head coaching candidates. He’s to hotheaded and his team is undesirable due to how the roaster is constructed.
Eh...everyone has a price, and there are only 32 NFL head coaching jobs on the planet. If the contract is big enough they will still attract talent.
Mike Florio!!!!! Thank you
Any coach who coaches for this owner should demand 25 mil per and a monster buyout. Who would wanna work for this guy. Great post Mike!(and the non stop work mode lol in the airport)
As a Bengals fan it's nice to see a more dysfunctional ownership than ours. LOL
Chicago possibly getting the 1st overall pick makes this situation more embarrassing.
And not just a 1st overall pick. The ticket for MHJ, Caleb Williams or Drake Maye. They robbed the Panthers and stole their pants afterwards
@@FR-nc3vb the panthers are butt ass naked at this point lmao
Glad for Chicago after they got robbed last year for Claypool.
He’s another Dan Snyder who drafted RG3!!!
RG3 was pretty good until he got hurt. The Redskins, in the same draft, also drafted Kurt Cousins and look how that turned out.
Thats a hard coaching job. Good luck Panther fans wooo-wee
Actually I think that this comes down to whos decision was to pick young over cj stroud. If you are a coach and gm, you should know who to go with and then not waiver. If you change your mind cuz the boss wants the other guy, know full well that you are still accountable.
Look right now Carolina has billionaires disease. You see billionaire disease is you collect all the "shinny new toys" and Bryce Young is his "shinny new toy". We saw the same thing happen in Cleveland with owner Jimmy Haslam. He wanted Johnny Manziel, he wanted Baker Mayfield. Jimmy Haslam gave away 3 first round draft picks and paid outrages sum of money to get Deshaun Watson. But to win in the NFL you need to put together a good defensive and offensive lines first that why owner David Tepper isn't going to win a whole lot of games.
So billionaire owners act like Gollum "my precious". LOL 😂
Bryce Young is part of the problem too, weaker then expected arm strength, slight build makes it very easy to bring him down not like college, this past game perfect example of his below avg athletisim and speed if he can get out of the pocket see the throwing lanes he can make a pass or run for some yardage, problem is you dont get that in the league like you do in college you gotta be able to throw from pocket quickly and when you cant see throwing lanes cause your short and you dont have the athletisim to make it out the pocket in time to get to your spots you cant keep blaming rest of team and everyone around you.
The supporting cast around him is terrible. Slow wr who can’t get open, weak line that can’t maintain blocks and offensive scheme that isn’t effective at all. Bryce young hasn’t done well but even if they had stroud, he would have had similar, maybe better, numbers. The gm put this team together and should have been fired first
When Young is in the huddle with thise giants, he looks like a Pop Warner player!
I loved him in high school here in SoCal but i TOLD everyone he is to small...like I said Colyt McCoy was to small..there is difference between short and SMALL....he is both
Here is another angle. We live in Rock Hill SC close to Charlotte NC where the stadium is. Tepper was supposed to build a huge HQ here. The whole thing went bad and he pulled out of it. Recently the city blew up his HQ foundation with dynamite. Its an allegory of his whole management style.
I'm from DC We did it for 20 Years Maybe Snyder will write a book about being an NFL Owner And Tepper may learn...
Hearing the Frank Reich height reference reminded me of high school. Frank played basketball and the one guy he had to guard in a game was Sam Bowie. Yeah, the guy drafted ahead of Michael Jordan. Strange but true!
This man Florio is a beast bro, no taking Tuesdays off for Mike
Florio, you're really busting out that materials engineering talk in your article on this with saying Tepper adds "stress and strain" to the workplace. Love it xD
Us Panthers fans want Tepper out of the way, and people in Hell want ice water🤦🏿♂️
At least us Redskins fans are happy😊
Where’s the Josh giddy update!?!!!
Best take I’ve heard
That was not a fair shake for Frank he deserved at least one more season because the hackett firing was different, hackett was in way over his head while also not even being proficient as an OC to before the hire and letting his players run the team with no accountability. They forget Frank had two playoff seasons in Indy, one without Andrew Luck.
NOBODY should take this Carolina job except to get some free millions...other than that it is unsalvageable job to take
Tepper single handedly destroyed the future of his own team, trading away all those picks +
DJ Moore for a 12 year old flag football player.
100% what a stupid move it was. Why would you ever trade away a 1st rounder for the chance to draft the smallest QB anyone has ever seen. Anyone who has watched football could tell ya midget QBs don't succeed in the pros outside of Brees.
@@joshlewis575 Brees was just short...Bryce is SMALL
@@joshlewis575 I mean Bryce is short AND small...
Don't forget about Matt Rhule fired mid-season last year. I think they should have stuck with Wilks - he seemed to get that team to play the 'right' way.
The end result of burning coaches after one year or less will be ALWAYS having rookie head coaches.
I'm beginning to wonder if David Temper is going to become the next Daniel Snyder.
Two words: John Gruden.
Jesus , y'all got a snyder too . Wish the best of luck. It took almost a quarter century it to end
Jets owner did the same thing, he is the one who wanted Zach Wilson. Joe Douglas as the GM has struck gold with every pick except Zach Wilson. The only thing keeping the Jets coach and GM from getting canned is Aaron Rogers. If they fire the coach, no way is Rogers going to come back. He would retire and call it a day. Now back to the Panthers, the owner is going to strike a deal with the Patriots for old and crusty BB as coach/GM which will be a huge disaster and Bryce Young and company will have no fun 😂😬🤪
WTF the jets have to do with this. Both of these teams are garbage
So depressing being a Panthers fan.
Mike Florio lecturing owners on how to be owners
He's not wrong.
No...he is lecturing owners not to be GMs.
An owner's concern should involve the character of the coach he hires. Football people like the GM should be concerned with the coaches skills and abilities.
Frank Reich didn't suddenly forget how to coach football. Frank Reich wanted CJ Stroud. David Tepper wanted Bryce Young.
This is a lack of talent on the roster issue. It takes more than a season to fix. No amount of coaching changes will change that.
Come on, Frank can't coach. Look how Indy has improved with their owner.
Jon Gruden waits by the phone.
He’s too smart to take that job.
Frank Reich’s plane being escorted out of Carolina right now
Frank Reich lives in North Carolina and is respected by the community. If they would have listened to him and drafted CJ Stroud number one it would be different 😊
Tepper becoming the new Haslam/Snyder is welcome news to us Falcons fans
On the bright side Da Bears have finally outsmarted someone
David Tepper is gonna start calling plays
Airport Florio achieved. Common Florio W.
Florio putting blood, sweat and tears into this thing to bring us NFL news
David is calling Coach Prime next...
Yeah as a Panthers fan I am getting tired of Tepper. No coach will want to go there now. Tepper wants a yes man coach. Ain't going to work
truth. hoping Tepper learns.
Start with oline and dline. Build the foundation for a qb, receivers, rbs and running backs to succeed. It’s not that hard. Just look at, idk…every Super Bowl winner.
As the late Don Shula said...when you are the head coach in the NFL, the only thing you are judged on is wins and losses.
If Sean McDermott was fired this morning I would have been less surprised.
@@StephenC-lg7jyYeah thats a really bad take lmao
Why do y’all keep saying David tepper is too involved in response to the frank Reich firing? Frank was bad.
Who would of thought that a 5’-9” 165lbs QB wouldn’t work in the NFL.
Tepper aside, this was the right move.
You'll be saying the same thing in 18 months when they move on from the next guy.
@jjstraka1982 this was not Frank's first rodeo. HE ruined the Colts.
@selectedsilversire7208 yeah, things are going just swimmingly over there since he left......
@@selectedsilversire7208who have another questionable owner 😂😂
No it wasn’t. You dont fire someone 11 gms into first year
Spot on.
Even Jerry Jones hasn't been lucky enough to find another Jimmy Johnson and draft another Troy Aikman.
Nailed it
Not sure what this owner thought was going to happen. No DJ Moore and a small rookie quarterback.
What the hell is he supposed to do with that roster?? This is all on ownership.
This is just like Jerry Jones and Dallas (and I am a Cowboys fan). The word is out now, and people are seeing how involved he is.
The ONLY thing keeping Jerry is the past (which Jimmy Johnson won), the marketing dollars, and he keeps the name in the media, like ESPN and Stephen A. Smith (who has received Jerry’s blessing to play the bad guy and talk bad about them to rally all others that do not like the Cowboys).
Otherwise the media would talk bad about Jerry’s control and not winning a Super Bowl for 30 years.
The person that hold the bag can do whatever they want whenever they want.
That's ironic you're telling Tepper to listen to football guys as you're not a football guy giving him advice
Please bring Reich to the Jets
Jeez this isnt on Frank Reich. Not that i think he's good but he basically got fired for being right on Stroud and Young. Now he gets paid 80mil not to coach 2 NFL teams.
Frank Reich for OC (if not HC) in Buffalo in 2024.
But even if not in Buffalo, Frank Reich a player known for his monumental comebacks....
Will comeback!
Weird seeing Mike with a hoodie lmao. So use to him in a polo or suit
Say what you will about Jerry Jones but at least he is willing to be patient and support his coaches.
It looks like your at my Starbucks
Maybe Tepper should name himself Head Coach, in his eyes no one else can do the job.
Can we get a petition to get Tepper out of here please.
Mostly agree, but i hope he doesnt think Riech deserves any sympathy.
Selecting an undersized, slow QB with an average arm #1 in the draft is the sort of thing bad teams do.
it would not surprise me if Tepper vastly overpays to get Deon as coach, then the circus will really begin.
Yes! Owners need to stay out of personnel decisions but the audacity to sit up there telling a billionaire business man how to run a business is crazy😂😂Let's give credit where it's due - a billionaire businessman knows a thing or two about success. They reach their heights by making smart decisions, like hiring competent people and stepping back to let them do their job. In contrast, some football execs/coaches seem to struggle with this concept. They're often too stubborn to admit their mistakes, persisting with flawed strategies and causing fans years of endless frustration. It's about time they take a page out of the businessman's playbook: recognize the misstep, make the necessary changes, and move on for the betterment of the team and the fans.
I agree, Frank's fault.
Couldn’t have said it better
NFL needs a Tepper Rule like the NBA have a Septien Rule.
Only 32 HC jobs in the NFL . It won't be that hard to find someone to hire.
Ownership needs to get the right people in the leadership group in place. Advisers, the GM, the HC, the coaching staff, etc.
Take the Detroit Lions for example. New owner Sheila Hamp hired Chris Speilman along with others to advise her in the GM and HC search. after an extensive interview process, they hired GM Brad Holmes and HC Dan Campbell. They started 2021 with an 0-10-1 record before recording their first win. What if Sheila fired Dan Campbell with that start? It would have set the whole program back years. They are still in a building process with their roster. They have hit on a number of their draft picks and free agents, but by no means is it a finished product, but it's a lot better now than it was in 2021.
The key point is the ownership, the GM, and the HC are on the same page.
Now the Detroit Lions are 8-3 and lead the NFC North and they are 16-5 in their last 21. This exhibited patience by the owner. Let's not forget they started 2022 1-6, and then flipped the season. Patience, Patience, Patience. It's something David Tepper seems not to have, and that sucks for Carolina fans.
2:32 😂😂
I love the Tepper comparisons to Dan Snyder. Sorry, guys, Mark Davis is the new Dan Snyder. But Tepper is getting there.
Mike is awesome
Who wants that Panthers Head Coach job. Impatient much? That owner is trash 😂
Panthers, David Culley is still available.
Not only did the Panthers trade away all their future picks for Bryce Young, they also traded away their 3 best offensive weapons: Christian McCaffery, DJ Moore and D'Onta Foreman. They literally do have the worst offensive roster in the NFL and NOTHING to build around. No coach is going to want to stick around for that along with Tepper's bullcrap. Unless...Josh McDaniels 😂
