Hi Daniel! I think that many people would be happy to see the lessons in composition(with a brief musical theory, for example). Your composition technique is absolutely unique and, to my mind, everyone wanted to see how you do it by the creation, not the software. Thanks for your lessons, and especially for the music!
Thanks for taking the time Daniel and please keep them coming ! Another short follow up on CC 7 vs. CC 11, wind controllers or expression pedals, and various methods of articulation changes (keyswitch, etc.) please !
Instant subscriber! You explain what you do very well and that piece of 'simple music' was very moving - something that one might expect from a movie all about justice, honour and glory. I'l watch more of your stuff because you are explaining things in an over-the-shoulder fashion, which works for me. Careful not to blow your instrument too hard and for heaven's sake, keep fingering your stuff!
Hi Daniel thank you for this tutorial. When ever i do the velocity i usually keep thing low as the note starts, take it high in the middle and as the note is about to end i bring it back down and so on for the next note (chord), you how ever did not particularly keep the start and and of the note in consideration, specially when you where doing the velocity for the brass sustains you would the velocity down in between a note also even when there is a sudden change in notes. which makes me confused if this velocity is the volume of the overall section or is it done to achieve authencity of how a string instrument is played?
Daniel, thoughts on the Korg NanoKontrol? The new Nano Kontrol Studio seems good, it is rather chunky though, and I'm keen on positioning it where you have yours which makes the slim-line version more appealing. Have you had a chance to use the 1st/2nd/3rd gen nano kontrols? I use Ableton primarily and Pro Tools for post-work. Cheers, Andrew
What should I do when I open my dynamics up and all the dots are highlighted yellow... I can't move any single space anymore... it only lets me move the whole instance of what I created after I open the session back up?
Question: Does anybody know if there is a Bundle or something where I can get a professional Software like Cubase and complete Orchestra VSTs? It would be awesome if there is some sort of a Kit where I can start right away without first have to buy a lot of separate Softwares. Thx
+walkingonwater I just purchased Cubase and don't have a lot of money to spend on VSTs so I was kind of bummed. Then I found this: www.soundsonline.com/composercloud
Why can't you just use the "velocity" lane to adjust velocity instead of modulation? Is it because velocity is for piano/keyboards? Is there a reference that tells you what settings work for which instrument? Like how do you adjust the loudness of a doublebass? I loaded a VST doublebass but modulation didn't seem to affect it in any way. Also, is there a way you can tell if your VST instrument patches can be adjusted like this without having to load them, record and then edit them to find out? Thanks.
+adamaj74 Velocity is locked on a note by note basis- it is not possible to do the 'Swells' as is shown in this video. The modulation technique can change the dynamics throughout a note, much like automation. I don't know about the double bass, but usually for the dynamics, a low pass EQ is used, so if you want to emulate that style, and it has velocity, play at the highest velocity and control the dynamics using the EQ. Usually, higher end patches have this, but you would have to watch a video review to make sure you're getting what you want.
+adamaj74 I could be wrong, but I think some instruments such as strings, the modulation controls how much pressure the violinist is putting on the strings, resulting in a raspier sound. For the loudness, I use expression controller. I'm pretty much still a beginner, so what I just said could be completely wrong, but that's how I do it usually.
+Kurt Tomlinson Music Thank you my friend!! That did the trick! For whatever reasons, I have found that modulation controls the loudness of my brass instruments vst's, velocity for my piano/keyboard vst's, and expression works for doublebass from my strings vst. But yeah, "expression" will control the loudness of a doublebass. I forgot which CC number it is now, lol. Thanks again.
adamaj74 No problem, I remember not knowing how to control the loudness a while ago because some instruments seemed to allow modulation to control the volume, whilst others allowed expression to control it.

I know I'm a bit late to the party (7 years to be exact) but this was really helpful thanks! Would love a Daniel James cinematic composing course!
Thanks for these tutorials, please keep them coming.
Looking forward to following these tutorials sooo much! thank you
Fantastic yet again Daniel! Your knowledge brings light to the darkest corners of my composing mind.
Thanks Daniel...Totally loved it..
Awesome, thanks for the tutorial!
excellent tutorials!! thank you very much!!
we need more!! great stuff

This is brilliant! Please make more of this. :)
Nice tutorial.
Great tutorial
hey you are doing a great job keep up the good work and thank you for this tutorial =)
You are the best in sharing their own knowledge,Do a lesson on Eq,panning and compression soon...
Thanks a lot !
As usual we all want to know what patches you used for each instrument in the demonstration
thanks
The chords are played with Symphobia 1. The top French Horn is Cinebrass. (I re-did the piece to check).
I would love to know how you setup your axiom for MIDI controls, all that stuff baffles me but I'd love to record automation in using faders!

"They are blowing the instrument hard"...:-D
I only had to laugh because you laughed. Next time explain it with strings ;-)
Cool :)

Great tutorial for beginners!
but are advanced tutorials planned in the future?:)
Would have been interesting to hear the orchestra sounds in Live 9 Suite.
Thanks, an interesting tutorial but please go easy on the 'Whiplash' conducting.

"Continuous Controller" is CC
but what programm do you need????

Your hair grew back!
What is this piece?
Which library did you use here? Sounds like Albion 1
P. s. I miss your hairs

+ERAT Thanks for the reply. I will give that a try tomorrow. I'm using EastWest composer's cloud, btw.
