@@CinematicComposing What if i told you we can do this all with one slider and have them all react in a different manner.. check out GrumpyMonkey plugins.. i'm using Niente and AutoVibrato to do just what I have said in this comments. it's amazing.. I am using the progressive vibrato setting in Auto Vibrato and i use Niente to control the Expression CC. These plugins have changed my life.. their plugin Roll control and Xfade are both really awesome as well. Highly recommend everyone look at these.
To my knowledge, this is by far, the most detailed usage of automation to render strings more realistic. A tons of video just suggest use "automation" but no precise context or examples are presented. Well done!!!
Thanks Marc. As many have said, this is precisely what so many videos lack: a clear explanation of what, how and why. These are complicated tools, and content creators often forget that beginners don’t even know what are the right questions to ask - they just feel the pain of not knowing!
not a classical composer by any means but we like having strings in our library compositions a lot for organic vibes and after watching this video a lot of stuff clicked for me that hadn't really before and a big part of that was those little stepped drops!! it really made things come to life as soon as I tried it on a string line. Cheers!!
You almost teached me everything I want to know about Strings modulation by this video man, Thank you very much and looking forwarding your new videos!
How do you guys do your expressions with kontakt instruments? I have a oriental strings library, which has “heart of violins” expression (Crescendo Decrescendo). Linking Midi cc11 to the mod wheel is suppose to do the job, but the way fl studio is, it doesn’t work as it should. When i link the cc11 it just does the regular dynamics like how it would be with orchestral libraries. Even the image line employees from the forum admitted that what im trying to do isnt so simple & even if i get a expression pedal it wont work. They say its possible with patcher but thats another headache of its own.
This is by far, the best video I've seen on the tube demonstrating expression with virtual libraries. Other videos I've seen start promoting overpriced (cc focused) midi controllers, and neglect explaining details on why/how to use dynamics/expression/vibrato competently/convincingly.
KEEPING ASIDE THAT HOW MUCH I LOVE THESE TOPICS. THIS MAN IS MOTIVATING ME WITH HIS WAY OF COMMUNICATION WITH THAT BACKING MUSIC,,,, ADN TO MAKE A NOTE, HIS VIDEOS ARE GEMS, WE CAN KEEP IT IN A BANK OF MUSICIANS.
You advices are so practical that should be applied in every single project. By the way, they work for electronic sounds as well, and almost for any vsti. Looking forward for your new videos
for years i've been used to just writing stuff by hand, but I'm starting to realize it might just be better to play stuff in. which is tough, because not only it's not what I'm used to, I'm not also that skilled in keyboard. it might take some trial end error, but probably less trial and error/time being wasted than writing midi data in.
I have been looking for a video like this for almost a year. I have been enjoying your course very much. Thank you for posting this! Having difficulty with Novation Launch Control as faders in Logic ProX but hoping I can set them up with older Mac operating system to the correct CC's. THANK YOU!
great video. great tips and i learned a lot. i was already using volume automation for some expression but somehow it never occurred to me to automate vibrato, etc. too. and of course, the fact that you don't waste anyone's time cannot be understated. too many guides use too many words for too few ideas. btw i did a double take when you switched to staccato on the fly hahaha. great stuff.
Great tips! Thank you! But I am having problem; when I look at dynamics (modulation) section in Key Editor there is always a part (just in the beginning) with missing modulation signals (dynamic knob of midi controller falls to zero when I restart track to listen). Then I draw it manually with the drawing tool. It is frustrating. Any solution?
Hi Marc, I'm a composer focused in film scoring and I love your explanation here, it made me realize I've been trying to bring realism out of virtual instruments in the wrong way. I was curious if I could ask your recommendation for a control surface to use the latch function with automation, or if there are any pros or cons in your experience between different models and brands. I primarily use Logic Pro and Native Instruments for context. Thank you for any advice you can share, I hope to work alongside you one day!
Strongly agree with other comments, this is literally the missing link in representing virtual instruments as ‘real’. Great stuff. And the music vocabulary, useful too.
Whoowa i never heard of breath control up till now , thanks i've been searching a to do something like this.... can you please tell me what controller are you using? i m in a desperate need of one ! :) thanks
Hey Marc great video, thanks for all the help! I just have a (probably stupid) question :) Can I achieve the same result with the 2 knobs on my Native Instruments keyboard? It looks like you're using a totally separate device. Thanks man 👍
sorry I dont get it....what dynamic or expression modulation ??? it's automatization of the volume?? (or even better what I have to automate in Logic Pro x to obtein this effect??)
This is the secrets I hd been looking for! That being said, I just got myself a Komplete Kontrol S49 keyboard and Cubase Pro and I simply can't figure out how to assign modulation/expression to the knobs of my keyboard... Ideally I'd love to assign the modulation to the wheel (Which I think is CC1 by default...) but I am getting completely lost and confused! Please HELP! 😅
Thank you very much for the content, I would like to ask if this line that represents the dynamics, could be inserted after the execution of the song, why do I ask, there are pieces of music that require greater attention or perhaps need both hands, and the reaper program would have this function . thank you very much
I am a little confused. Specifically about the LOTR dynamics: So Modulation, is probably velocity, but what is expression? Is it a specific setting you manipulate with your mod wheel for the plugin you are using or is it something else? I don't completely understand how I can produce similar effects in my setup and what I am actually changing in my sound. Do I need a specific library like lets say KONTAKT 14?
Thank you for these tips!! I need to get me an additional midi cc controller....I only have a midi controller keyboard and it doesn't seem enough. If you don't mind me asking, what gear are you using in this video?
can you make a video about working with tempo across a whole arrangement? I like the chords and melodies i come up with but i can never work out how to work with tempo. If i record everything to a click it doesent have the ebb and flow i want but if i completely turn the click off and just play off feel it always becomes a disaster when i they to orchestrate more stuff ontop of what i played in. I know theres things like beat mapping but that only works when you have a steady pulse. Ive thought about recording everything to a click and just automating the tempo of the whole project after the fact but alot of the time when im playing off feel i switch up the time signature and phrasing for just a few bars and stuff like that and i feel like it would be tedious to automate everything after the fact. Thanks
Suppose you've recorded a musical line with two hands on the keyboard (so without any CC yet). How do you rewrite only the dynamics and different CC with the help of the fader in cubase ? Is there a way for a track to hit record but only on specific CC ? Thanks !!!
Different question, because I know these go-to's ;-) I came by here accidentally - Wich controller do you use there? It looks a little bit like a mid range older "Icon"? But somewhat different...
Can someone help me? What do I do if I have short notes? Like sixtheen (I don't know how to say it in english). Do I have to do the crescendo at the beggining of each note? Isn't that gonna sound bad?
I don't have the cc controller, so i play the music then i add with the mouse scroll wheel the modulation and expression using automation i know it's weird😅
what controller is that? i have cinematic studio strings, but my nord grand keyboard doesn't have any expression control of any kind. can you recommend a usb controller for recording midi dynamics?
I have been searching for this also, started with the Akai midi mix; faders too short, got the Novation launch control; does not play well with logic, finally I think I found the answer, Presonus faderport 8; faders 100mm., once I found out from presonus how to get logic to recognize the cc's in midi mode (not clear in documentation or anywhere on line, and the customer support is not), finally it is doing what I want, and I can achieve the control I need. More than I wanted to spend, but you can also use it as a DAW controller and hopefully it will be helpful for mixing also.
How do you add the effects? Are that "effect tracks"? I ask because I look for something like this. I always hack my scores into a notator like sibelius or dorico and want to apply all the libary things afterwards, but no idea how (working with Nuendo). I can read in a midi file and add plugins, but I want to add the effects with wheels or sliders afterwards as you show in the videos. Thanks for help!
Just want to stop by and recognize how much of a gold mine this video is. I keep referring people to it.
Thanks Nico! You're awesome! ❤️🙏

4:10 Marc, what libraries are you referring to? List a couple/video demonstrations.
My thought was: This is gold. Then I noticed another comment describing this as a gold mine. And surprisingly compact for such an important video.
Wow, this video just confirmed what I have taken almost this last year to discover by myself. So big thanks for confirming my suspicion!
